Education And Incentivizing To Increase Preventative Screenings And Value-Based Care, Jacob Newkirk
Education And Incentivizing To Increase Preventative Screenings And Value-Based Care, Jacob Newkirk
Graduate Academic Symposium
The United States healthcare system has gradually made a transition from fee for service care to value based care. In 2015 the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) was created to help the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) create a number of quality incentive based programs for providers to help transition to rewarding for quality, instead of quantity, outcomes. These programs promote better care for individuals and better health for populations all at a lower cost. Quality-based payments are measured based on different preventative screenings and testing that a patient has completed with their provider. The more …

In November 2021, the Joint Faculty Senate (JFS) Committees on Inclusion, Equity, and Justice (IEJ) and Family Friendly Policies and Practices (FFPP) administered a survey to assess faculty and Academic Affairs staff members’ experiences during the pandemic and to inform future recommendations for policy responses to crisis that are both family friendly and advance inclusion, equity, and justice for faculty and staff. IEJ and FFPP worked to collect a large sample of respondents. The Joint Faculty Assembly (JFA) Chair and Vice Chair sent the survey to the Official Announcements - CSB/SJU Faculty list three times. The survey was also sent …

Improving Revenue Accounting Of Contractual Payment Funds In State Higher Educational Institutions, N. Tilakov
Improving Revenue Accounting Of Contractual Payment Funds In State Higher Educational Institutions, N. Tilakov
Economics and Innovative Technologies
State higher education institutions are the highest budget organizations with the ability of generating extra-budgetary funds at the expense of the contractual form of payment, and their activities and types are adapted to the requirements of a market economy. In this case, it is necessary to identify the issues of financing and management of providers, rather than connecting public higher education institutions with full-fledged payment-contract equipment. This article deals with the theoretical and methodological basis of the formation and management of income in the form of payment-contract in State higher education institutions. The current state of income of state-owned higher …

SAIPAR Case Review
The case came to the Supreme Court by way of appeal from the High Court. The two appellants were inmates at Lusaka Central Prison. It turned out that the appellants were HIV positive and were on Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART). The medical condition and treatment required that they be provided with food of a balanced diet in line with their medical condition.
The prison authorities, however, only provided limited quantities of maize sump for breakfast; maize meal (nshima) with dry sardines for lunch and super.2 The food was often rotten and contained foreign particles. Not only was it of of poor …

Claiming millions of lives and affecting millions more, the Covid-19 pandemic has thrust humanity into a period of intense reflection on the fragility of life. However, in this time when people have been encouraged to care for their fellow human beings by taking the precautions necessary to protect one another, many have asked the same question as one of Jesus’ antagonistic opponents in the Gospel of Luke: “and who is my neighbor?” In addition to the virus, though, the United States has been plagued by another adversary: non-necessity toward the other. By claiming no responsibility for the well-being and care …

Songs, Safe And Sound: Children’S Educational Music In Interwar America, Alexandra Krawetz
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation examines how children’s music, children’s theater, and media (e.g., radio and film) contributed to safety education from 1918 to 1939. During this time, technologies such as automobiles radically changed everyday life, leaving death and tragedy in their wake. These hazards fundamentally challenged the safety of family life, recreation, and work. As deaths from preventable accidents rivaled the number of American soldiers who died in World War I, governments and trade associations created new safety initiatives to prevent death and injury. Scholars have examined the economic, engineering, and workplace aspects of safety. However, overlooked is the revolutionary role of …
Helping Others: Looking At Culture, Language, And Time, Nicholas Raupach
Helping Others: Looking At Culture, Language, And Time, Nicholas Raupach
Undergraduate Theses
As a social phenomena, giving and receiving help is a complex behavior. This paper will highlight the specific language used in context of providing social support, and how this language has changed over time, as well as the impact of age on the act of helping another individual. Other social factors such as different identity constructs, power, and motivation will also be covered in relation to how they govern prosocial behavior. A particular focus on the notion of "filial piety" and helping others in South Korea will also be given to provide a cross-cultural comparative to the American context. (Faculty …

Open Access Academic Service Learning Syllabi
How do race and gender shape the way we engage our world and local communities? As we seek answers for this question, we will study Native American, U.S. Latinx, African American, and Asian American texts in contemporary U.S. culture (1960s-present). We will discuss and analyze short stories, novels, poems, films, music videos, and even comic books to explore how stories have served as a powerful forum for representing race and gender. To consider how these categories and their intersections shape our world, we will perform service with one community partner. Our goal in doing so is to learn from both …

Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Adulthood: The Often Overlooked Subdivision Of Individuals In The Autism Community, Kayla L. Piacquadio
Honors Student Research
Awareness surrounding the increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder and Asperger syndrome has become much more widespread in recent times. Children are diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum more than ever. However, the key here is the word “children.” We focus on the behavior, development, and well-being of our children for good reason.
While the oversaturated focus on children is entirely justified, this focus overshadows a minority within the autism community that deserves the same attention and recognition. This minority group consists of the adults who have gone years without a formal diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder or Asperger …

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Background: The aim of Jesuit education is total growth leading to action (Jesuit Institute, 2014a), plus higher Jesuit education seeks to transform students through examining the world around them. The promotion of experiential learning is noted in Ignatian Pedagogy (2014a) by urging the whole person to enter the learning experience. Nursing education, at a Jesuit University, involves educating the whole person within a service-oriented profession. Thus, experiential learning in a nursing course at a Jesuit University is an active component of Ignatian pedagogy, promoting Jesuit values and Catholic identity. This has been challenging since the COVID-19 pandemic forced universities to …

Justice-Oriented Learning: Reconfiguring Experiential Education With A California Farmworker Community, Judith Hope Munter Dr., Nathan Harkleroad, Manuel Cervantes, Andrea Tinajero
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
This community-based research project examines a land-based education program which creates opportunities for contextualized learning, acknowledging the value of immigrant farmworkers’ lived experiences. The study highlights how this culture of learning can be a means for promoting social and environmental justice. Participatory research methods involved collective inquiry in which co-researchers and community stakeholders engaged in all steps of the process with the goals of improving practice and bringing about transformative change.

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
The purpose of this article is to make visible collaborative pedagogical and research practices that opened space for community members to be co-educators and researchers with students and a professor on a youth violence assessment. We use Third Generation Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as a conceptual framework to examine the learning that occurred in the boundary zone of our eight differently situated organizations. As we demonstrate through the inclusion of boundary dialogue excerpts, this process generated more authentic understandings of why racial inequity has persisted in youth violence outcomes. The assessment questions we asked, the key informants we engaged, …

Exploring The Educational Impact Of Academic Field Trips Over Time, Tara Parrello, Colby L. Valentine
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Experiential learning can be in the form of internships, field trips, service learning, and research projects. The practical nature of criminal justice is a logical fit for experience-based learning. Specifically, academic field trips may be viewed as examples of short-term experiential education. However, do experiential learning trips have an academic impact over time? Using survey data, the current study examines if students acquire and retain knowledge after a prison tour of Eastern State Penitentiary. Pre- and post-tour surveys of student learning outcomes showed a statistically significant gain between the pre- and post-tour survey results. A follow-up survey explored if students …

“Difficult But Worth It”: Exploring The Experiences Of Women In Engineering During Co-Op, Brittany Arthur, Batsheva Guy, Evie Armitage, Meaghan Labarre, Sydney O'Connor
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Despite an extensive amount of research focusing on women in engineering, the gender disparity within the engineering workforce is the most significant amongst workforce disparities in the United States (National Science Foundation, 2018), with engineering being labeled the “last gender-equitable profession” (Pierrakos, Beam, Constantz, Johri, & Anderson, 2009, M4F-1). Although there is a substantial amount of literature on the experience of women in engineering, there has been little progress in regard to the recruitment and retention of women engineers in higher education and in the workforce over the past several decades.
The current study implements a Participatory Action Research framework …

Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Education has undergone multiple transformations with preset syllabi and modes of presentation to learners. Within the learning models utilized today, critical discussions on issues in higher education, social, economic, environmental, and racial justice settings have become important and at times, media headlines. Reading through course descriptions in an academic catalog or brochure will inform you about what the curriculum offers and what it does not. The course description wording brings into question two issues: whether the language used affects the understandability and relatability of the content by students of the course or, the course description represents the perspective of the …
