Ergonomic Assessment Of A Barista, Miguel Bastos, John Kleber Apr 2022

Ergonomic Assessment Of A Barista, Miguel Bastos, John Kleber

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Highly repetitive manual tasks such as those performed by a barista can put workers at risk of developing Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). These disorders can cause both short-term and long-term pain for workers and come at high financial costs for employers. The purpose of this case study is the evaluation of potential risk associated with tasks performed by baristas and to provide recommendations for limiting the potential development of these disorders. This case study focused on a barista working in Texas. The subject is a 24-year-old female who has worked as a barista for over a year. The Rapid Entire …

Battery Health And Monitoring System, Ying Zheng, Ryan Taylor, Teshome Teshome

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Lithium-ion batteries have widespread and varied use in modern technology, but are susceptible to degradation. This degradation cannot be avoided due to the mechanism these batteries use to charge and discharge, and because of this the accurate prediction of battery life is a valuable asset; especially when they are critical components of equipment. This task is made difficult due to the diversity present in operating conditions and charging cycle conditions produced by real-world usage of these batteries. Using real-time data collected from 10 flights of three separate Cessna C-700 aircraft, we develop a meaningful prediction model to improve the reliability …

Ergonomics Case Study: Ea-6b Aircraft Maintainer, Alexander Pepin, John L. Kleber Apr 2022

Ergonomics Case Study: Ea-6b Aircraft Maintainer, Alexander Pepin, John L. Kleber

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Keeping our military aircraft mechanics healthy is essential for the defense of the country. To better understand the conditions which on-duty aircraft maintainers face, A series of ergonometric evaluations were performed on a retired United States Marine Corps mechanic as he simulated tasks performed while maintaining EA-6B Prowler aircraft. Four tasks were evaluated with either the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) tool, or the Washington State Risk Assessment Checklist (WAC). The tasks were grouped as being either strenuous or repetitive. The strenuous tasks involved high physical exertion. Repetitive tasks were less demanding but needed to be performed many times during …

Measurement Of The Salivary Hormones Cortisol And Melatonin In Embry-Riddle Students, Brianna Magdaleno Apr 2022

Measurement Of The Salivary Hormones Cortisol And Melatonin In Embry-Riddle Students, Brianna Magdaleno

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

College students tend to have more stress and less sleep than many people. Cortisol and melatonin are stress hormones responding to a physical or emotional stressor. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate these essential hormones in saliva samples from students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University coursing the majors of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The selected course within this major is EGR 120 with the CATIA computer program. Saliva samples were obtained before and after taking the class using tubes and saliva test kits, in which students were asked to spit into the tube, and samples were analyzed …

Safety Consultation & Inspection: Reporting on a Manufacturing Facility

Holly Scammon, Nicholas Nieves, Lea Mahoney, Nelson Pusquin-Nieves, Alberto Carrillo

Background: In October of 2021, a safety consultation and inspection were conducted within a manufacturing facility in the Daytona Beach area. The inspection was conducted by a group of students pursuing their Master of Science in Occupational Safety Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The inspection began via a conversation with the facility’s safety manager and a senior employee. The group initially discussed the current state of the workplace, the policies and procedures in place for the different operations, and a serious …

Water Sustainability In The Nile, Rileigh Hanley

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

The 2020 World Expo in 2022 is being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. There is a heavy focus on global innovations when it comes to environmental sustainability. As constant damage is done to the Nile, there is heavy threat towards environmental and human security. The question, “How does the pollution of the Nile effect its surrounding countries and what innovations at the World Expo can be used to mitigate the long and short-term effects?” will be explored during this Expo. To research different innovations and different perspectives towards the threat, I will be attending conferences at the Expo that …

Safety Consultation: A Directed Practical Research Project, William Fearn, Irina Gheorghieva, Cristhian Padilla Palacios, Althea Gibbons, Daniel Sokol

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

This project involved observation and analysis of the health and safety program elements in an active, commercial enterprise holding International Standards Organization (ISO) 45001:2018 Safety Management System (SMS) certification. Approach: The team evaluated employee protection by using basic inspection and audit techniques to observe active production processes and analyze health and safety performance. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fiscal year 2021 records of industry-specific health and safety violations were reviewed pre-visit. The records review did not reveal results for site-specific enforcement actions, but did show industry hazard trends. Results: Multiple hazards were identified, providing insight into SMS functional utility. …

Effects Of Emergency Vehicle Warning Lighting System Characteristics On Driver Perception And Behavior, Alec Sblendorio Apr 2022

Effects Of Emergency Vehicle Warning Lighting System Characteristics On Driver Perception And Behavior, Alec Sblendorio

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Secondary crashes, including struck-by incidents are a leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among emergency responders, such as firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical service providers. The introduction of light emitting diode (LED) sources and advanced lighting control systems, provides a wide range of options for emergency lighting configurations. This study investigated the impact of lighting color, intensity, modulation, and flash rate on driver behavior while traversing a traffic incident scene at night. The impact of retroreflective chevron markings in combination with lighting configurations, as well as the measurement of “moth-to-flame” effects of emergency lighting on drivers was also investigated. …

Marker-Trait Association Mapping Of Sorghum Mosaic Virus Resistance In Sugarcane, Chenie Zamora Apr 2022

Marker-Trait Association Mapping Of Sorghum Mosaic Virus Resistance In Sugarcane, Chenie Zamora

LSU Master's Theses

Mosaic is a potentially devastating disease of sugarcane that had severe economic impact on Louisiana’s sugarcane industry in the 1920’s and has caused periodic problems ever since. The disease is vectored by migrating aphids that transmit Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) and Sorghum mosaic virus (SrMV) in a non-persistent manner. Mosaic in Louisiana is currently caused by strains of SrMV. Mosaic has been controlled primarily by developing resistant cultivars. Recently, mosaic was detected in some near-commercial clones in the cultivar selection program. This prompted extensive screening of breeding program parent populations that detected infiltration of susceptibility and revealed the need for …
