Electromagnetically Propelled Garage Door, Connor Seifert Apr 2022

Electromagnetically Propelled Garage Door, Connor Seifert

Honors Theses

Garage door systems are loud and energy inefficient given their many contact points and need for continual maintenance. Most garage door systems use a loud, bulky electric motor to pull the garage door up and down using a chain. To reduce noise and energy loss due to friction from the electric motor and chain, electromagnetic forces used in Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS) trains were researched and adapted to a garage door system. The electromagnetically propelled garage door (EPGD) system was designed and validated using SOLIDWORKS and ANSYS simulation with significantly less contact points due to non-contact electromagnetic propulsion (EMP). The design …

The Mother Of Exiles Is Abandoning Her Children: The Systemic Failure To Protect Unaccompanied Minors Arriving At Our Borders, Rosa M. Peterson Apr 2022

The Mother Of Exiles Is Abandoning Her Children: The Systemic Failure To Protect Unaccompanied Minors Arriving At Our Borders, Rosa M. Peterson

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Unaccompanied minors arrive at the United States border every day. Many brought by the hope of finding a life lived without fear, a luxury many United States citizens take for granted. Their truths become the barriers and shackles which keep them in detention centers and unaccompanied minor facilities throughout the United States; children find their very words wielded as weapons against them in immigration court. Words often spoken to therapists in perceived confidence, during counseling sessions. This practice is a systemic failure to protect unaccompanied minors arriving at our borders who are seeking protection and help. The United States …

Protecting A Woman’S Right To Abortion During A Public Health Crisis, San Juanita Gonzalez

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

As COVID-19 infected our nation, states were quick to issue executive orders restricting various aspects of daily life under the pretense of public safety. It was clear at the outset that certain civil liberties were going to be tested. Among them, the constitutional right to an abortion.

This comment explores Texas’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the limitations it imposed on abortion access. It will attempt to address the legitimacy of the “public health concerns” listed in executive orders issued throughout numerous states and will discuss the pertinent legal framework and judicial scrutiny to apply.

The RB1 gene is frequently mutated in human cancers but its role in tumorigenesis remains incompletely defined. Using an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) model of hereditary retinoblastoma (RB), we report that the spliceosome is an up-regulated target responding to oncogenic stress in RB1-mutant cells. By investigating transcriptomes and genome occupancies in RB iPSC–derived osteoblasts (OBs), we discover that both E2F3a, which mediates spliceosomal gene expression, and pRB, which antagonizes E2F3a, coregulate more than one-third of spliceosomal genes by cobinding to their promoters or enhancers. Pharmacological inhibition of the spliceosome in RB1-mutant cells leads to global intron retention, decreased cell …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by poor response to standard therapies and therefore unfavorable clinical outcomes. Better understanding of TNBC and new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed. ROR nuclear receptors are multifunctional transcription factors with important roles in circadian pathways and other processes including immunity and tumorigenesis. Nobiletin (NOB) is a natural compound known to display anticancer effects, and our previous studies showed that NOB activates RORs to enhance circadian rhythms and promote physiological fitness in mice. Here, we identified several TNBC cell lines being sensitive to NOB, by itself or in combination. Cell and xenograft …

The Effect Of Using The Adaptive Crawler™ On The Development Of Infants With Spina Bifida, Age 6-12 Months, Margaret E. Williams Apr 2022

The Effect Of Using The Adaptive Crawler™ On The Development Of Infants With Spina Bifida, Age 6-12 Months, Margaret E. Williams

Dissertations

During the timeframe of crawling, age 6--12 months, infants typically interact independently with their environment and their parents in order to perform certain developmental tasks. However, many infants with spina bifida are unable to crawl, as would typically developing infants. The inability to crawl may place these infants at a distinct disadvantage during this developmental timeframe. As a result of the developmental disadvantage, the parent-infant relationship may be negatively affected. For this study, the Adaptive Crawler™ assistive technology infant mobility device was designed, and a prototype created, to promote independent mobility and exploration of their environment by infants with spina …

Mindfulness And Observational Drawing, Corinne Christopherson Sonderegger Apr 2022

Mindfulness And Observational Drawing, Corinne Christopherson Sonderegger

Theses and Dissertations

Observational drawing has many benefits, yet it can be a difficult and frustrating curriculum for students and teachers alike. As I was teaching elementary and college art classes simultaneously, I noticed a significant discrepancy between my younger and older students. Students in my elementary art classes loved to draw and often expressed how excited they were to make art. However, students in my college art classes were more hesitant and self-conscious about drawing and did not believe they could progress artistically. Many of these students had abandoned drawing in elementary or middle school. This pattern evokes the U curve of …

Hyperactivation Is Sufficient To Release Porcine Sperm From Immobilized Oviduct Glycans, Momal Sharif, Vincent Hickl, Gabriel Juarez, Xingjian Di, Karl Kerns, Peter Sutovsky, Nicolai Bovin, David J Miller Apr 2022

Hyperactivation Is Sufficient To Release Porcine Sperm From Immobilized Oviduct Glycans, Momal Sharif, Vincent Hickl, Gabriel Juarez, Xingjian Di, Karl Kerns, Peter Sutovsky, Nicolai Bovin, David J Miller

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Fertilizing sperm are retained by adhesion to specific glycans on the epithelium of the oviduct forming a reservoir before sperm are released from the reservoir so fertilization can ensue. Capacitated sperm lose affinity for the oviduct epithelium but the components of capacitation that are important for sperm release are uncertain. One important correlate of capacitation is the development of hyperactivated motility. Hyperactivation is characterized by asymmetrical flagellar beating with high beat amplitude. We tested whether the development of full-type asymmetrical motility was sufficient to release sperm from immobilized oviduct glycans. Sperm hyperactivation was induced by four different compounds, a cell-permeable …

Safety And Efficacy Of Systemic Anti-Scg3 Therapy To Treat Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy, Chang Dai, Hong Tian, Amit Bhatt, Guanfang Su, Keith A Webster, Wei Li Apr 2022

Safety And Efficacy Of Systemic Anti-Scg3 Therapy To Treat Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy, Chang Dai, Hong Tian, Amit Bhatt, Guanfang Su, Keith A Webster, Wei Li

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: To circumvent possible systemic side effects, anti-angiogenic drugs targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) for ocular neovascular diseases in adults are approved only for intravitreal administration. However, intravitreal injection itself can elicit injection-related adverse effects, and premature eyes of infants with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) may be particularly susceptible to intravitreal injection. Therefore, an unmet clinical need is to develop safe systemic anti-angiogenic therapies for ROP. We recently reported that secretogranin III (Scg3) is a disease-restricted angiogenic factor and that systemic anti-Scg3 mAb alleviates ROP in animal models with minimal side effects on developing eyes and organs. The aim …

Centrosome-Dependent Microtubule Modifications Set The Conditions For Axon Formation, Durga Praveen Meka, Ewelina Betleja, Tao Cheng, Moe R Mahjoub, Et Al. Apr 2022

Centrosome-Dependent Microtubule Modifications Set The Conditions For Axon Formation, Durga Praveen Meka, Ewelina Betleja, Tao Cheng, Moe R Mahjoub, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Microtubule (MT) modifications are critical during axon development, with stable MTs populating the axon. How these modifications are spatially coordinated is unclear. Here, via high-resolution microscopy, we show that early developing neurons have fewer somatic acetylated MTs restricted near the centrosome. At later stages, however, acetylated MTs spread out in soma and concentrate in growing axon. Live imaging in early plated neurons of the MT plus-end protein, EB3, show increased displacement and growth rate near the MTOC, suggesting local differences that might support axon selection. Moreover, F-actin disruption in early developing neurons, which show fewer somatic acetylated MTs, does not …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Background The mechanisms linking menopausal age and heart failure (HF) incidence are controversial. We investigated for heterogeneity by obesity on the relationship between menopausal age and HF incidence. Methods and Results Using postmenopausal women who attended the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Visit 4, we estimated hazard ratios of incident HF associated with menopausal age using Cox proportional hazards models, testing for effect modification by obesity and adjusting for HF risk factors. Women were categorized by menopausal age: <45 years, 45 to 49 years, 50 to 54 years, and ≥55 years. Among 4441 postmenopausal women, aged 63.5±5.5 years, there were 903 incident HF events over a mean follow-up of 16.5 years. The attributable risk of generalized and central obesity for HF incidence was greatest among women who experienced menopause at age ≥55 years: 11.09/1000 person-years and 7.38/1000 person-years, respectively. There were significant interactions of menopausal age with body mass index and waist circumference for HF incidence,

Anisotropic Colloidal Particles Near Boundaries, Jiarui Yan, Christopher L. Wirth Apr 2022

Anisotropic Colloidal Particles Near Boundaries, Jiarui Yan, Christopher L. Wirth

Faculty Scholarship

Anisotropic colloidal particles are regularly found in applications ranging from health to energy. These particles, typically with non-uniform shape or surface chemistry, interact with boundaries in unique ways, offering pathways to complex assemblies and active systems. Work in this field over the past two decades rapidly advanced, with the last five years seeing significant innovation. One common thread joining many studies and applications is that of the presence of boundaries in the form of a nearby wall or neighboring particle. Asymmetry introduced by a neighboring boundary often leads to unique and surprising particle dynamics from the resulting anisotropic surface interactions. …
