Striving For Protection: Whistleblowers In Jordan, Wa'ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris

Public Administration Faculty Research

Whistleblowers take it upon themselves to protect public goods and resources by blowing the whistle on corruption. Yet, they are at risk of facing retaliation from their employers, as well as of experiencing firing, unfair appraisal, and isolation at work. In this article, we investigate the extent of whistleblower protection in Jordan. We discuss whistleblowers’ significant role in reporting wrongdoings and fighting corruption, as well as the price that whistleblowers pay to protect the public interest. In this study, we used the protection analysis approach by identifying the potential risks to which whistleblowers are exposed. Specifically, we used official documents …

Gendered Labor Market Outcomes During Covid-19: Evidence From Early Withdrawal Of Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, Nicholas Di

Economics Honors Projects

Despite their importance in the social safety net, Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits are expected to increase unemployment duration. I find that males, on average, face a greater drop in unemployment than females when (UI) is no longer offered in their respective state. Male’s unemployment rate dropped more by a magnitude of 0.7 percent compared to female’s which consists of about 11.5 percent of male unemployment during UI. Females who were married, were in lower family income brackets, or had children saw smaller changes in unemployment when UI programs were exhausted.

Beyond Vegan: Producer And Restaurant Involvement In The Mainstreaming Of Plant-Based Meat, Inge Pham-Swann

Sociology Honors Projects

Insights from organizational and economic sociology predict the emergence of new product categories is not simply a matter of developing something novel, but also the result of a cultural process making claims about these products. The recent pursuit of sustainable consumption exemplifies one of these processes, linking ethical qualities and claims to create connections between products and the people who consume them. Plant-based meat, as an emerging market contextualized by the ideas of ethical consumption surrounding the broader plant-based food movement, provides a unique opportunity to explore how lifestyle movements and novel ideas result in the creation of new product …

Trauma And Alcohol/Substance Use: The Role Of Self-Regulation Flexibility, Saankari Anusha Challa Apr 2022

Trauma And Alcohol/Substance Use: The Role Of Self-Regulation Flexibility, Saankari Anusha Challa

Dissertations

Despite a high comorbidity rate between trauma/PTSD and problematic alcohol/substance use, there is only a small body of work investigating moderators and mediators in this relationship. Few studies have examined the role of self-regulation, composed of coping and emotion regulation, in the context of PTSD and problematic substance use. Prior work has generally measured self-regulation categorically, with strategies labeled as maladaptive or adaptive, and therefore failing to account for the adaptiveness of the strategy in particular contexts. The present study is the only one to date to examine self-regulation flexibility in the relationship between posttraumatic symptoms (PTSS) and problematic alcohol/substance …

Building Energy Simulations (BES) are necessary for designing energy-efficient systems. Open-source simulation software developed by the Department of Energy (DOE), EnergyPlus (EP) provides Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) weather data that consists of a 15-year average. Two major concerns about this data are the inability to detect extreme conditions and limited data locations. There is a greater number of Microclimate (MC) stations that can be used for simulations, but it involves time-consuming data preparation to match the EP format. This study investigated the effects of Urban Heat Island (UHI) and the MC of Lake Erie. A comparison of the MC data …

With no current vaccine for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), it is crucial to study what factors influence how HIV infects host cells to develop new strategies and therapies to combat this pandemic. Cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor 6 (CPSF6) is an HIV host factor known to influence HIV infectivity and trafficking early in the infection. Two isoforms of CPSF6 exist, but the true difference between the two are currently unknown. This investigation strives to discover the difference between the two isoforms in regard to the innate immune response. Initially, we require a way to overexpress CPSF6 in mammalian cells to …

Using Machine Learning To Recognize Chronic Rhinosinusitis, Irene Liu '23 Apr 2022

Using Machine Learning To Recognize Chronic Rhinosinusitis, Irene Liu '23

Student Publications & Research

Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a nasal disease characterized by the inflammation of the mucosa and paranasal sinuses with a duration of at least 12 consecutive weeks. So, to diagnose CRS, one needs to keep a record of their symptoms for ~12 weeks before they are recommended to get a tomography which will allow physicians to classify them as a patient with CRS or without. This is a timely and costly process; thus, machine learning should be used to speed the process up. Since patients with CRS have more obstructed noses, the sound produced should be different than an individual without …

Fragment-Based Drug Discovery And Synthesis Of Sars-Cov-2 Therapeutics, Hannah Johnson '22 Apr 2022

Fragment-Based Drug Discovery And Synthesis Of Sars-Cov-2 Therapeutics, Hannah Johnson '22

Student Publications & Research

Since the novel SARS-CoV-2 was first identified in late 2019, numerous waves of the virus have hit communities around the world, affecting public health, mental
health, economies, and more. While public health guidelines are in place and vaccines are available, an oral antiviral is still needed. Vaccines and guidelines help
to prevent the contraction of the virus, however these measures are not 100% effective. An oral antiviral would inhibit the replication of the virus after
contraction, therefore complementing the current measures against the coronavirus. Further, oral antivirals are easier to distribute than vaccines, making
effective COVID-19 treatments available to more …

2019–2020 Colorado Oil And Gas Law Update, William D. Farrar

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Colorado courts and the state’s legislature were quite active in 2019 and 2020 on the oil and gas administrative law front. Namely, the Colorado General Assembly enacted changes to the Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Act in response to the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision in Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission v. Martinez. While the Martinez case was not principally a substantive oil and gas case, the resulting fallout from the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision made sweeping changes to the state’s statutory laws. The decision will also result in major administrative law changes affecting the Colorado oil & gas …

Seeing The Fitz Center Principles In Action, Katie Dawson

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

The initial River Stewards orientation exposed me to the Fitz Center principles. These principles are a framework that guide leaders as they navigate through the community. The principles are as follows: Community assets: Communities meet needs and solve problems with their gifts, strengths, and assets. Social capital: Trustful relationships are necessary for community building and strengthening. Constructive public conversations: Balanced inquiry and advocacy is critical in all dialogue. Adaptive capacity: Change comes from learning together. Widely shared vision: A collective community vision is more powerful than any individual vision.
