New Dimensions In Business Communication: Unconscious Layers, Strategic Judo, And Camouflaged Reversal, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

(1) Individuals differ in: (a) cognitive/cogitative types; (b) modal types: (c) degree of awareness of unconscious layers of thought process; (d) utilization of strategic judo and camouflaged reversal. (2) Cognitive/cogitative types should not be confused with skill types, aptitude types, emotional types, or personality types. (3) Individual differences in cognitive/cogitative types are mostly phenotypically innate. Therefore the assumption that you should be able to make everybody understand you is incorrect. (4) Communicational modal types are: factual mode, contextual mode, pictorial mode, insinuative mode, deceptive mode, etc. (5) Unconscious layers include self-deception, repression of one's own perception, inability to distinguish whether …

Determinants Of Network Learning - A Conceptual Study, Shalini Rahul, Manmohan Rahul Apr 2022

Determinants Of Network Learning - A Conceptual Study, Shalini Rahul, Manmohan Rahul

Management Dynamics

Attention of researchers in the strategic management literature has been drawn to the phenomenon that a firm which develops an ability to learn offers an important source of competitive advantage to it. Thus the concept has been understood from a variety of angles like, levels of learning in organizations, process of learning, outcomes and barriers to learning. On the other hand, firms are increasingly being looked at from the network perspective, since it has been accepted that no organization can function in isolation and rather its existence is affected by the myriad of relationships with other firms, in which it …

Spontaneity, Agility, Craftsmen's Pride, And Informalization, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

To counteract rigidification by standardization, we need: (1) employees' self-generating experimentation without punishment for failures; (2) letting "the nail which sticks out" grow instead of hammering it down; (3) examining crazy ideas seriously; (4) cultivation of craftsmen's pride instead of filling the requirements like robots; (5) spontaneous change-generating quick interaction among heterogeneous employees (morphogenetic process); (6) barrier-free outbreeding to and from outsiders; (7) elimination of ponderous and rigid procedurism and overcontrol; (8) elimination of inbreeding; (9) mastering the masterpieces before moving ahead.

Models For Creative Process, Sujit Kumar Dubey Apr 2022

Models For Creative Process, Sujit Kumar Dubey

Management Dynamics

Each and every creation, artistic, scientific, or commercial, adopts certain guidelines to achieve that position. Scientific creations are the results of convergent thinking where as artistic creations are results of divergent and convergent thinking both. But in advertising it is difficult to conclude that big ideas are result of either convergent or divergent thinking or both. Considering the problem the researcher tried to identify the creative process especially used by the creative people in advertising world. It was revealed through the study that there is a common creative process followed by the creative people in advertising.

Management Dynamics For De-Stereotyping The Corporate Culture: An Alternative To European And North American Concepts, Magoroh Maruyama, Kuniko Maruyama Apr 2022

Management Dynamics For De-Stereotyping The Corporate Culture: An Alternative To European And North American Concepts, Magoroh Maruyama, Kuniko Maruyama

Management Dynamics

In countries where the management is not dominated by the established orthodoxy of European and North American theories, principles and practices, it is possible to use alternative concepts with less ponderous resistance. Most of the researchers who follow the established orthodoxy either: (a) take it for granted that the corporate cultures are preconditioned by or reflect their country cultures, and therefore they begin their research with a study of country cultures, and then proceed to interpret corporate cultures in terms of country cultures; or (b) infer the country cultures from an aggregate of corporate cultures. In both cases they intentionally …

Developing And Evaluating A Psychoeducation Booklet About The Mental Health Effects Of Discrimination, Margarita Manzano, Ellalandra Arakelow, Aldona Chorzepa, Leigha Clarke, Skylor Loiseau, Dawson Hughes, Theodore Macgowan, Elizabeth Brondolo

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Discrimination has been consistently linked to depression. Despite evidence suggesting that individuals targeted for discrimination want to discuss discrimination-related stress, research suggests that therapists are not engaging in these conversations. There are limited psychoeducational materials available to support conversations about race-related stress and mental health, and there are limited data on their effects. This paper describes the development and initial evaluation of a new psychoeducational booklet which provides information about discrimination and depression. The information provided is based on social cognitive models of the relations of discrimination to depression. We provide a description of the development of the psychoeducational materials, …

Discrimination, Acculturative Stress, And Academic Achievement In Emerging Adults, Rebecca Steele, Amanda Rosado, Nancy Hernandez, Elizabeth Brondolo

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Researchers report an association of racial discrimination to academic achievement for racial/ethnic minority students. Racial discrimination is manifest on multiple levels, including interpersonal discrimination, discrimination in schools, and societal and cultural discrimination. Researchers have generally focused their efforts on examining the effects of one type of discrimination on academic achievement. Further, mediators of this relation have not been fully explored. In a sample of 78 college students, we found only interpersonal racial/ethnic discrimination, and not school-based or societal discrimination was negatively associated with GPA. However, the effects did not hold once controlling for demographic factors. We examined two potential mediators …

The Sisterarchy Of Indian Feminism, Shweta Sinha Apr 2022

The Sisterarchy Of Indian Feminism, Shweta Sinha

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

The paradigm of feminism in India is deeply entrenched in its socio-cultural-political-economic reality. It is an ever-evolving byproduct of patriarchy borne out of the caste-system, colonialism, urbanism (‘Westernism’), and capitalism. As a result, the plurality within Indian feminism is predicated on the multiple patriarchies that exist within the Indian society. Therefore, while parsing feminism in India, it is imperative to identify and acknowledge the various sub-groups and intersectionality that exist within the larger framework of women’s issues.

Amongst all the marginalized factions that exist within the feminist framework, this study attempts to investigate a specific caste/class-based intersectional perspective, i.e., Dalit …

Understanding Barriers To Sexual Assault Reporting Among Undergraduate Sorority Women, Isabella Rivera

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

This study aimed to examine the correlation between knowledge of sexual health and sexual assault, and the subsequent disclosure of sexual assault amongst undergraduate women in sororities at St. John’s University. During the academic year (2019-2020), the number of reported sexual assaults on campus was discrepant among the perception of the student body, with students believing there to be a higher number of incidents than reported to the University. Possible causes of the lack of formal sexual assault reporting were investigated. This included the knowledge of undergraduate women at St. John’s University pertaining to sexual health, reproductive health, university resources, …

Manger A Travers Les Cultures: A Comparative Look At Food Waste, Awareness And Redistribution Potential, Chloe Bergeron

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

In the most recent nation-wide studies, France’s estimated annual food waste, as of 2017, is 1.8% (Barilla Center, 2017). Conversely, the United States’ estimated annual food waste, as of 2010, is between 30-40% (USDA, 2010). This research compared University of Paris students’ and St. John’s University students’ awareness and knowledge of food waste on an individual, university, and governmental level to gain an in-depth understanding of the impacts of reduction practices and awareness methods such as campaigns and education. This study examines university students’ relationship to food and food waste in the United States versus France, redistribution potential, and the …

Musculoskeletal Markers: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Three Biological Factors On Robusticity, Megan Greene Apr 2022

Musculoskeletal Markers: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Three Biological Factors On Robusticity, Megan Greene

LSU Master's Theses

Research suggests that musculoskeletal markers (MSMs) can provide information about the lives of deceased individuals. The majority of studies focus on single factors that influence the morphology of MSMs in pre-modern societies (i.e., medieval, hunter-gatherers, preindustrial, etc.). This study analyzes MSMs of modern skeletons of 72 females and 83 males from the United States whose ages at death range from 30 to 89 to understand the relationship between various biological factors and MSM morphology. Eight MSMs (attachments of pectoralis major, deltoid, brachialis, supinator, iliopsoas, gluteus maximus, quadriceps, and soleus) were analyzed and categorized as phases zero, one, two, or three …

Development And Characterization Of Physicochemical Properties And Consumer Perception Of Gluten-Free Oat-Based Snack Bars Containing Orange Peel, Andrea R. Muela Negrete Apr 2022

Development And Characterization Of Physicochemical Properties And Consumer Perception Of Gluten-Free Oat-Based Snack Bars Containing Orange Peel, Andrea R. Muela Negrete

LSU Master's Theses

Orange peel (OP) is a major byproduct from orange juice production, and is a good source of fiber and flavonoids, particularly nobiletin. Nobiletin has been reported to exhibit pharmacological activities including anti-inflammation and antioxidation. Incorporating orange peel into food products would harness economic benefit of this industrial byproduct and support a sustainable food chain. This study was performed to evaluate consumer perception of gluten-free oat-based snack bars (GFOSBs) containing orange peel.

In the first study three GFOSBs were formulated to contain 17%, 20%, and 23% orange peel by weight. Consumers (N=103) evaluated GFOSBs for sensory liking (9-point hedonic scale) and …

Acknowledgement, Education, Memory: Reframing The Cemetery Landscapes Of The Enslaved, Aubrey L. Phillips Apr 2022

Acknowledgement, Education, Memory: Reframing The Cemetery Landscapes Of The Enslaved, Aubrey L. Phillips

LSU Master's Theses

The landscape holds onto the nearly imperceivable cemeteries of the formerly enslaved population that have been erased through time, development, and censure of historical narratives in Louisiana. Immediate action is necessary to retie censured chronicles of enslavement to the landscape, educating the public on deep-rooted systemic racism in the contemporary environment. This thesis aims to provide reparations to the Black and descendant communities of southern Louisiana. This work acknowledges the remaining cemetery fragments, reframing and knitting them together as a network of spaces that uphold a more holistic memory of the past.

The role of landscape architecture extends beyond site …

Cross-Issue Agenda Setting From Racism To Immigration: Spreading Activation Or Group Threat?, Martina Santia Apr 2022

Cross-Issue Agenda Setting From Racism To Immigration: Spreading Activation Or Group Threat?, Martina Santia

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Little research to date offers evidence for the “cross-issue agenda setting effect,” that is transfer of salience from media coverage of racism to perceived importance of immigration. Laboratory experiments afford the opportunity to facilitate causal inference in determining whether this cross-issue effect is due to a cognitive mechanism of spreading activation (as conventionally assumed in agenda setting research) or to a cumulative, affective process driven by perceived threat to a certain identity group. Observational data, on the other hand, allow to externally validate the experimental results beyond the constrained settings typical of laboratory experimentation.

This dissertation combines the strengths of …

From The Mouths Of Women: The Life Model Of Homelessness, Janeal M. White Apr 2022

From The Mouths Of Women: The Life Model Of Homelessness, Janeal M. White

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify commonalities in life events preceding a first episode of homelessness for women living in shelters in Texas. This built on the work of Nooe & Patterson (2010) who identified fourteen factors that contributed to increased risk of homelessness as visualized in the Ecology of Homelessness. While based on existing literature at the time, Nooe & Patterson may not have heard clearly the voices of women with lived experience. The current study sought to explore how these risk factors manifest in the lived experiences of women residing in Texas homeless shelters.

The significance …

The Effects Of Team-Based Learning On Preservice Elementary Teachers' Sense Of Efficacy For Literacy Instruction, Lauren R. Brannan Apr 2022

The Effects Of Team-Based Learning On Preservice Elementary Teachers' Sense Of Efficacy For Literacy Instruction, Lauren R. Brannan

The Reading Professor

Teaching efficacy is an important variable related to teaching behaviors, student achievement, and teachers' psychological behaviors; therefore, strategies to build teaching efficacy during preservice teacher preparation should be implemented. Team-based learning (TBL) has been used across a variety of disciplines in higher education, but it hasn't been explored in the preparation of elementary literacy teachers or in relation to teaching efficacy. In this study, TBL was implemented in an undergraduate reading methods course for one semester. A comparison group was used from the same course during a different semester using a traditional lecture approach. Participants' sense of efficacy for literacy …

The Correlation Between Poverty And Reading Success In Children's Early Years, Claudia T. Watts Apr 2022

The Correlation Between Poverty And Reading Success In Children's Early Years, Claudia T. Watts

The Reading Professor

It is important that young children from low-income families and who are also categorized as being from a low socioeconomic status, acquire the early literacy skills that support their development. These skills should enable them to transfer their learning as they progress through succeeding grades. Research indicates that young children will be more successful at reading if they have access to quality learning materials and enriching literacy programs. The purpose of this article is to better understand and briefly discuss how poverty negatively influences early reading success. Children from low-income families often have significantly lower pre-academic skills, infrequent interactions with …

Sounds, Syllables, And Spellings: The Case For A Morphophonemic Approach To Word Learning, Christine M. Haight Apr 2022

Sounds, Syllables, And Spellings: The Case For A Morphophonemic Approach To Word Learning, Christine M. Haight

The Reading Professor

This exploratory article examines some current practices associated with systematic phonics instruction and the challenges associated with such practices as identified in the literature. Morphological instruction, having been found to benefit students with reading and spelling difficulties, strengthens arguments in favor of morphophonemic approaches such as Structured Word Inquiry (SWI). SWI is presented as an instructional approach that gives teachers and students an additional perspective to consider in the teaching and learning of word meanings, word reading, and spelling. SWI is presented as a morphophonemic approach to word analysis that reveals the logic of English spelling and its role in …

New Multimedia Resources For Ecological Resilience Education In Modern University Classrooms, Katharine F. E. Hogan, Julie A. Fowler, Conor D. Barnes, Alison K. Ludwig, Dominic J. Cristiano, Daniel Morales, Rubi Quiñones, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr, Jenny Dauer

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Solutions to global problems such as climate change and biodiversity loss require educational frameworks and accompanying teaching resources that are theory-based, interdisciplinary, and accessible to broad undergraduate and graduate student audiences. Ecological resilience theory (ERT) is a framework with established interdisciplinary application to complex global problems, but despite an emphasis on the utility of resilience in national higher education frameworks, we found that many current ecology textbooks incorporate multiple definitions and highly variable amounts of discussion on core resilience concepts. To facilitate the use of innovative teaching resources in ERT in universities, this paper describes four free multimedia tools and …

The Biggest Loser: How Tanking In Professional Sports Impacts Fan Perception, Julia Ayres Apr 2022

The Biggest Loser: How Tanking In Professional Sports Impacts Fan Perception, Julia Ayres

Honors Projects in Mathematics

Professional sports teams are adored nationwide for their talents and the pride they bring to their city for their efforts. However, not all teams take this responsibility seriously and will lose on purpose, or tank, to gain a higher draft pick in the future. Although the long-term goals of tanking are to help the organization, many people take issue with athletes not putting in their best efforts in every game. Teams in both the NBA and NFL are guilty of tanking to gain better draft picks but not all have found success in this process. This leads to important questions …
