Visionary Metamorphosis In The Yogavāsiṣṭha: A Transpersonal Approach To The Existential Crisis, Caitlyn Lauren Selve

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents an unconventional approach to the existential crisis according to the transpersonal psychology of the eleventh century text, Yogavāsiṣṭha. An existential crisis is a general term used to signify a subjective experience of emotional distress as it relates to certain objective realities of human existence. This paper builds off key concepts (“givens”) from the field of existential psychotherapy, including death, isolation, freedom, and meaninglessness, provided by psychoanalyst Irvin D. Yalom, illuminating how the crisis is addressed in contemporary psychotherapeutic settings. Brief attention is given to the Western academic roots of existential psychotherapy, including areas of continental philosophy and …

SUMMER CALVERT (Psychology) Representing Neurodivergent Children in Fiction Sponsor: Kathleen Webster (Psychology) To recognize aspects of the self within the other is a goal universal to the human experience. The ability to relate to our peers grants us the dissuasion of insecurities or loneliness that might otherwise fester within our minds. Fictional characters and stories can have a similar effect on us. For this reason, the importance of neurodiverse representation in children’s books cannot be understated. When it comes to developmental disorders, many children may go undiagnosed until adolescence or even adulthood; this does not mean they aren’t struggling, or …

The Future Is Female, Tori Hansen May 2022

The Future Is Female, Tori Hansen

Senior Honors Projects

Historically, both within the United States and globally, women have not entered into science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) associated fields at the same rate as men. Several explanations have been set forth to understand this gender gap, most of them centering around women not being encouraged to go into STEM. In recent years, the percentage of women STEM workers has exponentially increased, but women still make up a minority of STEM workers. However, with women’s enrollment in college and graduate school increasing, and men’s enrollment dropping, STEM fields may start becoming predominantly women. Thus, the goal of this study …
