Madwoman Makings: The Modern Girl As An Object Of Fear And Fascination In Unno Jūza’S "Mrs. Hirumi's Refrigeration Bag", Eliza Joy Mortimer
University Honors Theses
This thesis argues that Unno Jūza's 1937 short story "Mrs. Hirumi's Refrigeration Bag" uses the sensational tropes of deviant detective fiction to both stage and interrogate interwar Japanese anxieties around gender, science, and modernity. Focusing on the figure of Mrs. Hirumi—a scientifically empowered and sexually assertive female plastic surgeon who dismembers and cryogenically preserves her husband—the author reads her as a radical iteration of the Japanese Modern Girl character. By drawing on scholarship on deviant detective fiction, imperial modernity, and Kazue Harada's concept of (re)productivity, this thesis demonstrates how the short story both reproduces misogynistic criminological discourse and unsettles heteronormative …

Business Capstone Review: An Analysis Of A Local School Foundation, Emily Carlile
University Honors Theses
This capstone review thesis analyzes a school foundation in the Portland Metro Area. The capstone project was designed to conduct research to support the local school foundation, specifically the 18-35 demographic, and to increase overall funding. The project required navigating a compressed ten week timeline and coordinating a large, eleven member team to meet our client’s complex expectations. Beyond our hurdles with research, we managed multiple clients' expectations during the presentation, which were not part of the original consulting process. To maintain the project workload, we communicated with the client through a weekly email, four presentations, and a final recommendation …
Understanding The Experiences And Visibility Of Asexual People And Guiding Policy To Effectively Protect Asexuality, Lizzie Stravens
Understanding The Experiences And Visibility Of Asexual People And Guiding Policy To Effectively Protect Asexuality, Lizzie Stravens
University Honors Theses
Asexuality is sexual orientation defined by those who experience little to no sexual attraction. Despite asexuality being as common as red headedness or left handedness, it has been severely overlooked in research and conversations. Because many people are not aware of the existence of asexuality, it has not been directly attacked by anti-queer campaigns. Still, there have been some recent shifts in this dynamic as asexuality becomes more visible. I conducted a linear regression on the 2022 Ace Community Survey results. I analyzed the effect of theoretically important variables on the outness of asexual respondents. Results indicated an importance on …

Differences In Student Basic Need Satisfaction Across University Community Service Offerings In Vietnam, Myles Lynch, Nguyen Lam Phuong, Duong Ngoc Anh, Huy Ngoc Vu, Hoang Quang Thang
Journal of Youth Development
In 2018, the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) made experiential learning a mandatory component of general education in an effort to enhance student skills pertaining to career and professional success. Community service, as a form of experiential learning, can enable individuals to apply knowledge and skills to address societal challenges beyond classroom settings. The availability and effectiveness of structured community service-learning programs vary across Vietnamese universities. Using Basic Needs Theory (autonomy, competence, relatedness), a sub-theory of Self-Determination Theory, this study examined differences in Vietnamese student need satisfaction based on availability of community service courses, providing insights into program …

Evaluating Youth Programs With Intention: Integrating Developmental Research For A Youth-Centered Approach, Brittany Hite, Tiffany Berry, Evangelia Theodorou, Michelle Sloper
Journal of Youth Development
Conducting applied research or program evaluations in youth settings requires a unique combination of expertise. Although evaluation approaches provide general guidance on how to conduct high-quality evaluations, they rarely provide specific guidance on how to engage in evaluation with organizations serving youth. Fortunately, the field of youth development provides extensive information about how youth develop, facilitators of and influences on youth development, and important considerations for collecting data from this population. This paper provides an approach to evaluation that integrates youth development research. By integrating this literature into their evaluation practice, the authors identified two underlying principles (contextual sensitivity and …

Journal of Youth Development
Youth development opportunities promote health and wellbeing across adolescence. However, scholars have increasingly questioned whether these programs are relevant to and meet the needs of youth with minoritized identities. Using an intersectionality lens, 2022 Minnesota Student Survey data from 8th, 9th, and 11th graders who indicated a minoritized sexual and/or gender identity (N=24,400) were analyzed using exhaustive Chi-square automatic interaction detection to understand how youth’s racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender identities and grade contributed to engagement in youth development opportunities. Mean youth development opportunity scores were lowest among youth with multiple minoritized identities, particularly transgender and gender diverse youth of …

To Employment And Beyond: Life Skills Development Through A Private-Nonprofit Partnership, Spencer Dudley, Victoria Haley
To Employment And Beyond: Life Skills Development Through A Private-Nonprofit Partnership, Spencer Dudley, Victoria Haley
Journal of Youth Development
The transition to employment is a pivotal step for youth and young adults. A successful shift to the workforce can support financial independence and open pathways toward further learning and personal growth. Employers increasingly prioritize life skills over complex or technical skills in the current labor market. However, opportunities to develop these skills are not equitably distributed. Life skills training programs within a positive youth development framework show promise in affording historically marginalized youth populations opportunities to identify and develop these skills, yet research on youth experiences in such programs remains limited. This qualitative study draws on focus groups and …

Positive Youth Development And Connection With Nature Through Urban Agriculture, Casey Ortbahn, Marijke Hecht, Kristi Lekies
Journal of Youth Development
Youth urban agriculture programs connect youth with nature and support positive youth development. In this qualitative study, we use photovoice to amplify youth voices and explore 16 high school youths’ perceptions of how participation in a youth gardening program supported their confidence, connection, and sense of belonging. Using qualitative thematic analysis of photos, posters, and interviews, we identify several program processes that supported confidence and belonging, including meaningful relationships with peers and adults, connections with nature, and relationships with more-than-human beings. Our analysis reveals that nature is an important context for youth development and that nature is also more than …

Complicit Nullification: The Illegitimate (Abrogation) Of School Religious Liberty Precedent, Amanda Harmon Cooley
Cardozo Law Review
Louisiana has enacted legislation that mandates the display of the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom. This statutory mandate directly contradicts the Supreme Court’s extant precedent in Stone v. Graham. Legislators in Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Kentucky have also indicated plans to introduce similar unconstitutional legislation, defying the Supreme Court’s interpretations of the First Amendment’s Religion Clauses. Similarly, Texas and Florida now permit public school chaplains or Bible-based public school curricula, which violates the Court’s longstanding prohibitions on such actions, as established in its 1948 ruling in Illinois ex rel. McCollum v. Board of Education …

Can’T Get Work Off My Mind: The Effect Of Nonwork Goal Reflection On After-Work Rumination And Well-Being, Trevor A. Foulk, Min-Hsuan Tu, Michael Schaerer, Amber Johnson
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Many employees lament that their inability to stop ruminating about work during nonwork time is one of their most significant work-related challenges, yet limited research has articulated actionable strategies to address this issue on a day-to-day basis. Integrating goal shielding theory with rumination theory, our model introduces nonwork goal reflection as a deliberate behavioral intervention employees can engage in to curtail work-related rumination, in a way that facilitates well-being during nonwork time. Specifically, we argue that engaging in nonwork goal reflection—where employees intentionally reflect on nonwork goals to be completed during their nonwork time—can curtail work-related rumination and is associated …

This study explores the under-researched area of cognitive-affective trust transference within the context of short-form videos (SFV) on the TikTok platform. It also provides new insights into the impact of source homophily that arises from viewing SFV. The study incorporates trust transfer theory into the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model perspective to examine trust transference. Data were gathered from 411 online users in Malaysia using a purposive sampling technique. Partial least squares structural equation modeling has been used to analyze the data via SmartPLS. The findings suggest that video characteristics, platform trust, and source credibility of SFVs on TikTok affect affective trust …

Rounding Styles On Inpatient Infectious Disease Consult Services: Impact On Education And Patient-Care Delivery, Melanie Kiener, Vanessa Ku, Prathit A Kulkarni
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Inpatient infectious disease (ID) consult services have recently been experiencing increased patient volumes due to a variety of factors, including higher patient complexity, increased patient turnover, growing rates of antimicrobial resistant infections, population aging, and ID outbreaks. As a result, increased time and resources have been required to continue to deliver high-quality medical care to patients. At academic teaching hospitals, providing patient care in the context of increased volumes must be balanced with the educational mission for trainees. Rounding is a central component of ID clinical work which brings together patient care and education. In this narrative review, we aim …

Aims: Early aortic stenosis (AS) detection remains challenging, with many patients presenting late when left ventricular dysfunction may be irreversible. We evaluated whether longitudinal AI-enhanced ECG patterns can predict outcomes years before intervention and assessed the community screening potential of the AK-AVS model.
Methods and results: We conducted two complementary analyses: (1) community validation of the AK-AVS model in 3632 cardiovascular disease-free ARIC participants, and (2) longitudinal trajectory analysis of 7860 ECGs from 2040 TAVR recipients collected up to 10 years pre-procedure. Unsupervised clustering identified distinct AK-AVS trajectories, with mortality associations assessed using Cox regression and net reclassification improvement. In …

Introduction: Opioid use is common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for pain management; however, evidence of opioid-associated adverse events is increasing. While biological (b) or targeted synthetic (ts) disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) improve functional outcomes such as pain, little is known about their impact on opioid utilization patterns. This study investigated opioid utilization before and after b/tsDMARD initiation and assessed effect modification by sex.
Methods: Using 5% Medicare claims data from 2012 to 2020, this cohort study included older adults (≥ 65 years) with RA who initiated b/tsDMARDs (first prescription = index date), and had continuous Medicare Parts A, B, and …

Background: Bronchiolitis exposes infants to both acute burdens (e.g., hospitalization in cases of severe bronchiolitis) and increased risks for chronic respiratory sequelae (e.g., asthma). In severe bronchiolitis, recent evidence suggests distinct pathobiological roles of microbiota (e.g., viruses, bacteria) and host responses influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors. However, the relationship of airway microbiota with host DNA methylation (DNAm) in infants with severe bronchiolitis remains unknown.
Methods: In a multi-center prospective cohort of 504 multi-ethnic infants with severe bronchiolitis (age < 1 year), using nasopharyngeal microbiome (exposure) and blood DNAm (outcome, Infinium MethylationEPIC BeadChip, Illumina) data within 24 h of the hospitalization, we conducted microbiome-epigenome-wide association studies (mbEWAS). We examined microbiota-associated differentially methylated CpGs (mbDMCs, false discovery rate [FDR] < 0.05), regions (mbDMRs, FDR < 0.05), and DNAm age acceleration. We also determined the associations of DNAm age acceleration with asthma development by age 6 years. Furthermore, we focused on asthma-related pathogenic bacteria-Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae-for functional analyses by examining serum mbDMR-related proteins (Proseek Multiplex, Olink) and their enriched pathways (FDR < 0.10).
Results: Across 23 common taxa-observed at least in 25% of the infants, we identified 1 mbDMC (S. pneumoniae, cg16594639, chr20: 39528675) …

Jumonji domain-containing 1A (JMJD1A, also known as KDM3A) is a histone demethylase that specifically demethylates H3K9me1/2 to enhance gene expression. The roles of JMJD1A in many physiological and pathological processes have been revealed. However, it is unclear whether JMJD1A is involved in host defense against enteric pathogen infection. In this study, we found that enteric infection with C. rodentium induced JMJD1A expression in colonic epithelial cells at the transcriptional level partly mediated by IRF1. After C. rodentium infection, JMJD1A-/- mice exhibited increased mortality, colonic injury, and C. rodentium load and systemic spread, suggesting that JMJD1A protects host against C. rodentium …

In biomedicine, survival analysis addresses time-to-event data to study outcomes like patient survival and treatment response, and supports biomarker discovery. Yet, teaching this analysis is often hindered by mathematical and programming barriers. We present a structured, hands-on tutorial that goes beyond a typical online guide-offering integrated video lectures, literature, quizzes, and practical exercises. Built around Orange Data Mining, an open and free no-code visual analytics platform, the tutorial covers key concepts such as censoring, Kaplan-Meier curves, group comparisons, and biomarker discovery through real-world datasets. Organized in four pedagogical units, it progresses from basic survival data analysis to gene and gene-set …

Whole genome sequencing (WGS) studies play a pivotal role in studying the genetic underpinnings of human diseases and traits. High quality and reproducible variant calling is the cornerstone for the success of downstream analyses, including WGS association studies and polygenic risk prediction. This paper compares the data quality, performance, and concordance of two widely used WGS variant callers, the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) and Variant Tool set that discovers short variants (VT), using 60 532 multi-ancestry whole genomes sequenced by the Centers for Common Disease Genomics (CCDGs) of the NHGRI Genome Sequencing Program. Our findings show that both QCed GATK …

Background: Whether the traditional distinction between segmental and multifocal dystonia is clinically or scientifically useful remains unclear.
Objective: To evaluate whether idiopathic isolated adult-onset segmental and multifocal dystonia can be differentiated based on clinical features other than the contiguity of affected body regions.
Methods: We compared data on segmental and multifocal dystonia from two large dystonia databases established in the USA and Italy that used similar criteria for patient recruitment and assessment.
Results: Compared to segmental dystonia, multifocal dystonia was characterized by a higher proportion of men, a younger age at dystonia onset, a greater frequency of upper limb dystonia, …

While considered a motor control structure, the cerebellum contributes to non-motor functions, including impulsivity. However, whether it contributes to impulsivity in a domain-specific manner remains unknown. Studies on cerebellar ataxia (CA), a common model for cerebellar dysfunction, typically have small sample sizes, limiting robustness. In a multicenter cross-sectional study, we investigated the cerebellum's role in various forms of impulsivity by comparing large cohorts of CA to age- and education-matched neurotypical healthy (NH) controls. Additionally, to examine the ability to identify individuals with CA using impulsivity features alone, we developed supervised machine learning (ML) models. In experiment 1 (CA = 140, …

Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) remains challenging to treat, and seizure control often fluctuates over time. Responsive neurostimulation (RNS) is increasingly used in pediatric and young adult populations, yet long-term effectiveness and safety data are limited. We evaluated longitudinal seizure control trajectories and safety of RNS in children, adolescents, and young adults treated at our center. Seizure frequency was assessed at approximately 6-month intervals from serial follow-up visits through the most recent follow-up, with each sampled visit categorized by ≥ 50 % (all-responder, AR) or ≥90 % (super-responder, SR) seizure reduction. We examined the persistence and durability of seizure control and used …
