Vaccination Games Of Boundedly Rational Parents Toward New Childhood Immunization, Wei Yin, Martial L. Ndeffo-Mbah, Tamer Oraby

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Infectious diseases harm societies through disease-induced morbidity, mortality, loss of productivity, and inequality. Thus, controlling and preventing them is critical for public health and societal well-being. However, societies can hinder efforts to control the spread of diseases by failing to adhere to public health recommendations, such as through vaccine hesitancy. Various disease-transmission models have been utilized to help policymakers respond to (re)emerging outbreaks. The usefulness of such models in assessing the effectiveness of public health policies is significantly dependent on human behavior. This paper introduces a new model of parental behavior toward a new childhood immunization. The model incorporates societal …

Improvements In The Thermal Stability And Mechanical Robustness Of Holograms Recorded In Acrylamide/Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Photopolymers Through The Use Of D-Sorbitol As A Plasticizer, Michael Murray, Aaron Byrne, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

In this work, a photopolymer formulation is presented that demonstrates significant improvements in layer hardness and temperature stability, while retaining the excellent holographic recording characteristics and ease of preparation associated with acrylamide (AA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based photopolymers. This is achieved through the use of N-phenyl glycine as an electron donor and, for the first time, D-Sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar-alcohol, as a plasticizer. The plasticizing effect of D-Sorbitol is demonstrated through the minimal loss of diffraction efficiency (η) observed upon UV bleaching (fixing) of 500 lines/mm gratings, which is evidence for effective mass transport during holographic recording. This solves a key …

Hybrid Deep Learning For Anti-Money Laundering: Unsupervised Detection Of Emerging Schemes Via Feature Fusion And Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Cosmas Ochieng Kungu, Kennedy Senagi, Evans Omondi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Traditional rule-based anti-money laundering (AML) transaction monitoring systems suffer from high false-positive rates and rigidity in detecting complex emerging risk. This limitation has prompted changes to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendation 16, mandating the use of advanced systems for detecting money laundering schemes in cross-border payments. This study developed a hybrid framework integrating VAE-learned behavioural latent factors, GNN-captured relational network signals, and rule-based heuristics for enhanced anomaly detection. The model was evaluated on 54,258 real-world cross-border transaction records from an East African commercial bank. The One-Class SVM, optimised via a rigorous grid search proved superior compared to Isolation …

The Supreme Court's Policy Favoring Arbitration And Its Limits, George A. Bermann Mar 2026

The Supreme Court's Policy Favoring Arbitration And Its Limits, George A. Bermann

Faculty Scholarship

While the federal policy favoring arbitration is codified in the 1925 Federal Arbitration Act (FAA), the strength of that policy depends on the treatment that arbitration receives in federal courts and in the United States Supreme Court in particular.

Courts in all jurisdictions play an important role in fashioning the treatment of arbitration agreements, arbitral proceedings and arbitral awards. However, the judicial role in this regard is especially pronounced in the United States, in view of the problematic state of legislation on the subject. The federal legislation on arbitration is 100 years old and has never been meaningfully amended. The …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is a subclinical measure of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). AAC can be captured on lateral spine images obtained from bone density machines during routine osteoporosis screening. Identifying individuals with AAC provides a new opportunity to prevent disease progression. Objectives: The aim of the study was to externally validate a machine learning-derived AAC 24-point algorithm (ML-AAC24) with incident ASCVD. Methods: Middle-aged individuals from the UK Biobank Imaging Study with lateral spine images, obtained via dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, were included. ML-AAC24 scores were grouped as low (<2), moderate (2 to <6), and high (≥6). Linked health records were used to identify ASCVD-associated events, including hospitalizations and death. Results: Among 53,611 participants (52% female; mean age 65 years), 78.2% had low, 16.4% had moderate, and 5.4% had high ML-AAC24. After excluding people with prevalent ASCVD or missing data, 1,163 (2.3%) of 50,923 people had an incident ASCVD event over a median follow-up of 4.1 [3.0-5.5] years. In age- and sex-adjusted analysis, compared to those with low ML-AAC24, those with moderate (HR: 1.80 [95% CI: 1.57-2.08]) and high ML-AAC24 (HR: 2.87 [95% CI: 2.39-3.44]) had a higher HR for incident ASCVD. Results remained comparable after adjustment for established ASCVD risk factors. Consistent patterns were observed when considering incident coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Conclusions: Assessing ML-AAC24 on lateral spine images offers a new and promising screening method to identify people with higher risk of incident ASVD events.

Necessity Or Preference? Navigating The Role Of Physical Presence In The Post-Pandemic Workplace, Shelby Wray Mar 2026

Necessity Or Preference? Navigating The Role Of Physical Presence In The Post-Pandemic Workplace, Shelby Wray

Cardozo Law Review

The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally altered how society conceptualizes the spatial boundaries of the workplace, proving that businesses can operate effectively without requiring employees’ physical presence. As remote work gained legitimacy during the pandemic, longstanding assumptions about where jobs can be performed—and where legal protections apply—have come into question. In particular, the scope of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has become increasingly hazy, especially regarding when the ADA is triggered outside of the physical workplace.

Currently, there is a circuit split as to whether employees with disabilities are entitled to ADA protections for their commute to work. This Note addresses …

Design, Testing, And Safety Performance Of Movable Guardrail Systems: A Prisma-Based Systematic Review, Navid Hashemi Taba, Ahdieh Sadat Khatavakhotan, Majid Tolouei-Rad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Movable guardrail systems are increasingly used in work zones, reversible lanes, and temporary traffic operations; however, evidence on their crashworthiness, material performance, and operational reliability remains dispersed across multiple design typologies and regulatory frameworks. This PRISMA-compliant systematic review synthesizes 78 studies involving full-scale crash tests, validated finite-element simulations, field performance evaluations, and compliance evaluations under MASH, EN 1317, NCHRP 350, and AS/NZS 3845.1. The findings indicate that modular rigid barriers reliably achieve TL-3/TL-4 performance when joint alignment and foundation conditions are properly controlled; semi-rigid steel systems provide a practical balance between containment capacity and redeployability, but remain sensitive to post …

Can Legal Knowledge Save Lives? A Randomized Experiment In Preventive Health Screenings, Christopher Robertson, Wendy Netter Epstein Mar 2026

Can Legal Knowledge Save Lives? A Randomized Experiment In Preventive Health Screenings, Christopher Robertson, Wendy Netter Epstein

Faculty Scholarship

While the U.S. healthcare system typically imposes significant out-of-pocket costs, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires full insurance coverage for certain preventive health services (PHS), including cancer screenings, without cost-sharing. Despite this policy, one in four eligible Americans remains unscreened for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer, which increases their risk of premature death. We hypothesize that a lack of awareness about the ACA’s free care requirement contributes to this gap and that explicitly informing patients could increase screening uptake. Additionally, we investigate whether prior experiences with medical debt deter individuals from seeking even cost-free care, reflecting a spillover effect of …

Additionally, advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), and automation have introduced new possibilities for personalizing and optimizing background music in educational settings. …

My Schoolhouse Remains A Ghost Town: When The School Closes, The Block Dies, Sunni Ali Mar 2026

My Schoolhouse Remains A Ghost Town: When The School Closes, The Block Dies, Sunni Ali

Journal of Research Initiatives

This conceptual essay examines the neoliberal policy forces driving widespread public school closures in urban communities across the United States. Drawing on scholarship in education policy, urban sociology, and community studies, the author argues that the closure of traditional public schools — accelerated by charter school expansion and accountability-driven federal policies such as No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top — has had devastating consequences for low-income communities of color. The essay explores how school closures erode neighborhood cohesion, dismantle civic anchors, and disproportionately burden students and families with the fewest school choice options. The author advocates for …

Women’S Agency And Pleasure (Wap): Toward A Black Feminist Theory Of Sexuality, Jelisa S. Clark, Erica Campbell Mar 2026

Women’S Agency And Pleasure (Wap): Toward A Black Feminist Theory Of Sexuality, Jelisa S. Clark, Erica Campbell

Journal of Research Initiatives

Black feminist theory has identified sexuality as a site of oppression for Black women, however, there has been limited attention to Black women’s pleasure. We suggest that WAP by Cardi B and Meg the Stallion provides a conceptual lens through which Black women's sexuality can be more humanely envisioned. WAP, in the tradition established by Black women in the blues, represents Black feminist theorizing about sexuality. Themes of Cultivating Community and Developing Voice through Self-Definition are central to discussions of Black women's pleasure. In this work, we bridge academic theorizing and Black women's cultural productions to reinvigorate Black feminist theorizing …

Madwoman Makings: The Modern Girl As An Object Of Fear And Fascination In Unno Jūza’S "Mrs. Hirumi's Refrigeration Bag", Eliza Joy Mortimer Mar 2026

Madwoman Makings: The Modern Girl As An Object Of Fear And Fascination In Unno Jūza’S "Mrs. Hirumi's Refrigeration Bag", Eliza Joy Mortimer

University Honors Theses

This thesis argues that Unno Jūza's 1937 short story "Mrs. Hirumi's Refrigeration Bag" uses the sensational tropes of deviant detective fiction to both stage and interrogate interwar Japanese anxieties around gender, science, and modernity. Focusing on the figure of Mrs. Hirumi—a scientifically empowered and sexually assertive female plastic surgeon who dismembers and cryogenically preserves her husband—the author reads her as a radical iteration of the Japanese Modern Girl character. By drawing on scholarship on deviant detective fiction, imperial modernity, and Kazue Harada's concept of (re)productivity, this thesis demonstrates how the short story both reproduces misogynistic criminological discourse and unsettles heteronormative …
