A Pocket Manual For Human Papillomavirus Vaccines, Natalie A Voss, J Brooks Jackson, Mary B Rysavy Mar 2026

A Pocket Manual For Human Papillomavirus Vaccines, Natalie A Voss, J Brooks Jackson, Mary B Rysavy

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide and is responsible for the majority of cervical, anal, and vaginal cancers. The first prophylactic HPV vaccine was introduced in the United States in 2006. Extensive evidence demonstrates the HPV vaccine is highly efficacious and effective, particularly when administered prior to HPV exposure. Despite strong safety data and proven cost-effectiveness, HPV vaccine uptake in the United States and globally remains suboptimal. Barriers to vaccination include limited knowledge, safety concerns, and logistical challenges. Current advancements focus on single-dose vaccine regimens, development of therapeutic vaccines, and higher-valent formulations. Expanding HPV vaccine …

Our ability to retrieve the names of objects in our environment is a fundamental aspect of everyday life. This process requires a complex, dynamic network of cortical and subcortical interactions. While the cortical constituents of this network have been extensively studied with intracranial recordings, the subcortical nodes of the naming network are unclear. We probed the role of the left medial pulvinar nucleus in naming with direct intracranial recordings and stimulation in eight humans (three male, five female) as they named objects using pictures and auditory and written descriptions. We found a spectrotemporal signature of naming in the left medial …

Background: Childhood maltreatment (CM), encompassing abuse and neglect, is highly prevalent and associated with elevated risk for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other related conditions. The extent to which neuroanatomical alterations in MDD and PTSD are attributable to CM, however, is uncertain.

Methods: Here, we analyzed CM and whole-brain MRI data from 3,711 participants in the ENIGMA MDD and PTSD Working Groups (25 sites; 33.3±13.0 years; 59.9% female). Normative modeling estimated deviation z-scores for 14 subcortical volumes (SV), 68 cortical thickness (CT), and 68 surface area (SA) measures. To identify transdiagnostic effects, associations between CM and …

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurological disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in methyl CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2), a transcriptional regulator essential for maintenance of normal neuronal function. The current FDA-approved treatment for RTT, Trofinetide, mildly alleviates some symptoms. In contrast, re-introducing MeCP2 or increasing its amount through transgenesis in mouse RTT models improves most neurological phenotypes and enhances survival. Here, we devised a therapeutic strategy to moderately increase MeCP2 protein by modulating the alternative splicing of MECP2 to switch the less efficiently translated e2 to the more efficiently translated e1 isoform. We deleted Mecp2 exon 2 (unique …

A Neural Circuit Framework For Economic Choice: From Building Blocks Of Valuation To Compositionality In Multitasking, Aldo Battista, Camillo Padoa-Schioppa, Xiao-Jing Wang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Value-guided decisions are a cornerstone of cognition, yet the underlying circuit-level mechanisms remain elusive. We used reinforcement learning to train recurrent neural network models endowed with Dale's law on a battery of economic choice tasks, which revealed a two-stage computational framework. First, value estimation occurs at the input level, where learned weights store subjective preferences and approximate the non-linear multiplication of reward magnitude and probability to yield expected values. This feedforward mechanism enables generalization to novel choice options. Second, option values are compared within the recurrent network, where specific connectivity patterns mediate robust winner-take-all decisions, with both excitatory and inhibitory …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Ceutorhynchus constrictus Marsham is a seed-feeding weevil and potential biocontrol agent of the invasive plant garlic mustard, Alliaria petiolata (Bieb.) Cavara & Grande (Brassicaceae), in North America. Ceutorhynchus constrictus is native to Europe, has a single generation per year and eggs are laid into developing seeds within the seedpods of bolting garlic mustard plants. Females use their prolonged rostrum to bore holes through seedpods into the developing seed, deposit a single egg and then cover the opening with secretion. Larvae feed on ripening seeds and progress through three instars before exiting seedpods in late June, to pupate and overwinter in …

“Today’S Video Is Sponsored By: Child Labor” The Need To Expand Federal Child Labor Protections To Online Content Creation, Zayda Torres Barrios

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

The Fantastic Adventures YouTube channel, owned by Machelle Hobson, had grown to almost 800,000 subscribers and over 250 million views by 2019. The channel’s content featured Hobson’s seven adopted children in entertaining weekly ten-to-fifteen-minute skits where they did things like pretend to be superheroes and have lightsaber battles. However, things were not as blissful as they seemed as Hobson was arrested in March 2019—facing thirty child abuse related charges. The police said the children were “malnourished” and had been withdrawn from school for many years to have more time to film videos for their family channel. The probable cause …

Ladies First? The Tax Code Says Otherwise Tax Policy And The Cost Of Economic Dependence, Doron Narotzki, Tamir Shanan

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

First, inclusion and equity policies—such as anti-discrimination laws, affordable childcare, or education access—increase people’s participation in the labor market and thus increase federal and state revenues. Second, ultimately, tax law is not just a mechanism for raising revenue. It actively shapes economic and social realities. By acknowledging the ways in which it has reinforced outdated structures, we can also recognize its untapped potential. If designed differently, tax policy could—and should—serve as more than just a fiscal tool. It could foster economic autonomy, address inequalities, better reflect the needs of a changing society which includes, among other factors, a transition …

The Takings Clause And The Environment, Timothy M. Harris Mar 2026

The Takings Clause And The Environment, Timothy M. Harris

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Congress and state legislatures have been slow to address growing cries for increased environmental protections. Climate change and the attendant sea-level rise, wetland protections, cleanup of hazardous substances, and protections for species listed under the Endangered Species Act often require extensive regulation of private lands to be effective. The political will to implement environmentally conscious regulations varies with election cycles and social mores, but there is a legal—constitutional—impediment that overrides these political winds. The Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause frequently creates an insurmountable budgetary obstacle to broad land use restrictions that may otherwise be implemented to protect the environment.

The Authoritarian Semiotics Of The New Campus Mask Bans, Rob Kahn

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

In 2024, students took part in protests for and against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Some protests were disruptive and violent— most were not. In response, calls arose across the country to ban masks. In New York, a broad organization of civil rights groups called for a statewide mask ban under the hashtag #UnmaskHateNY, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul—with the support of New York City Mayor Eric Adams—called for a mask ban on the New York City subways. There were also calls in North Carolina and Los Angeles for new, or enhanced, mask bans. Meanwhile, Ohio’s Attorney General …

Book Review: Teaching With Ai: A Practical Guide To A New Era Of Human Learning, 2nd Edition By José Antonio Bowen & C. Edward Watson, Jordan O'Connell

Essays in Education

This book review examines Bowen and Watson’s second edition of Teaching with AI, which argues that higher education must treat AI as an artificial general disruptor of cognitive labor. Moving past handwringing and handwaving, the authors press faculty toward design decisions that make judgment, standards, and integrity visible again. Their warnings about detection are timely, but the book is ultimately forward-looking: AI can widen feedback, clarify expectations, and make redesign work practical at scale. Although the book avoids discipline-specific exemplars, it makes a clear case that the issues facing colleges and universities lie deeper than AI—and that AI can …

Freshwater Quality For Recreation, Heather Nix, Masha Bokar

Forestry and Natural Resources

South Carolina has many water resources that provide tremendous opportunities for people to enjoy water-based recreational activities, such as swimming, boating, and fishing. Participation in these activities produces significant economic benefits and supports many jobs throughout the state. However, at times, water quality may be unsafe for immersion or skin contact due to high levels of pollutants, such as bacteria or cyanotoxins. It is important for people to be aware of potential concerns and understand methods for determining if a waterbody’s current conditions are likely to be safe for primary or secondary recreation.
