Evaluating The Impact Of Self-Care Strategies Incorporated Into Undergraduate And Graduate Nursing Curricula: A Systematic Review, Roseanne Moody Fairchild, Salena Tully

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background/Significance: Self-care is defined as a person’s capacity to partake in preventative measures promoting emotional, physical, and spiritual health to maintain one’s well-being. Registered nurses represent a majority of the healthcare workforce, and a 2017 report by American Nurses' Association found nurses have elevated risk for: a) being overweight, b) lacking adequate rest and sleep and, c) experiencing high levels of stress. As effects of the Covid-19 pandemic rapidly spread, substantial proportions of nurses reported heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and burnout. Impact of the pandemic has brought forth increased awareness regarding the need to encourage self-care practices among nurses …

Relationship Between Gratitude And Job Satisfaction In Nursing Leadership, Tammy P. Aiken

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

In the current healthcare climate, retaining our workforce has become increasingly important. Even more so the retention of nursing leadership has become even more crucial, as the need to have nurse leaders guide the profession during tenuous and difficult times is now even more apparent. Looking at ways hospital organizations can potentially increase their retention of leaders, which would assist in the retention of their staff, would be instrumental in easing labor shortage and therefore improve the quality of care. There has been a great deal of research that has shown that gratitude plays a significant role in a person’s …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Well-Being Instrument For Health Professionals - The Corewellness Index, Nicholas E. Anton, Lauren Ball, Jeffrey S. Levy, Nicky Beaudoin, Catherine F. Pipas

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Healthcare worker wellness has received increasing attention from medical educators and healthcare systems given its importance to provider longevity and patient care. Wellness is multidimensional, and very few instruments evaluate all domains of wellness. Our team developed a comprehensive measure to evaluate the multi-dimensional nature of wellness. The purposes of this study were divided into four phases: phase 1) detail the development, design, and initial dissemination of the instrument, phase 2) collect feasibility and normative data for a diverse sample of healthcare workers, phase 3) evaluate the internal reliability of the measure and its component domains, and phase 4) …

Factors For Patient Trust And Acceptance Of Medical Artificial Intelligence, Ana Bracic, Kayte Spector-Bagdady, Sophie Towle, Rina Zhang, Cornelius A. James, Nicholson W. Price Ii

Articles

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in clinical care, but widespread adoption requires patient trust. Trust may be enhanced through systemic governance mechanisms or frontline clinicians providing a human in the loop for AI oversight. However, it is unclear how different approaches specifically influence patient trust in the use of medical AI. The objective is to determine the extent to which patient trust in and choice of medical scenarios involving AI are associated with governance mechanisms, clinician presence, performance, and data quality.

Internal Quality Enhancement: Case Of A Uae Business School, Valentine Matthews

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This paper presents a case study of a quality enhancement process of a small business school in the United Arab Emirates. The research explores this specific quality enhancement process with a focus on why it is implemented by the case institution and how it achieves quality improvement. The case quality enhancement process is an internal institutional approach that deviates from the Scottish Enhancement-Led Institutional Review approach. Articulation of the process is conducted from policy and practice. The articulation provides deeper and clearer understanding of the approach to quality enhancement, how it achieves quality improvements, and the leadership’s justifications for adopting …

Brd4-Mediated Er Membrane Contact Creates Functionally Distinct Mitochondrial Subtypes, Brandon Chen, Rachel M Guerra, David J Pagliarini, Et Al. Mar 2026

Brd4-Mediated Er Membrane Contact Creates Functionally Distinct Mitochondrial Subtypes, Brandon Chen, Rachel M Guerra, David J Pagliarini, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Inter-organellar communication is critical for cellular metabolism. One of the most abundant inter-organellar interactions occurs at the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria contact sites (ERMCSs). However, an understanding of the mechanisms governing ERMCS regulation and their roles in cellular metabolism is limited by a lack of tools that permit temporal induction and reversal. Through screening approaches, we identified fedratinib, an FDA-approved drug that dramatically increases ERMCS abundance by inhibiting the epigenetic modifier BRD4. Fedratinib rapidly and reversibly modulates mitochondrial and ER morphology, induces a distinct ER-mitochondria envelopment structure, and alters metabolic homeostasis. Moreover, ERMCS modulation depends on mitochondrial electron transport chain …

Factors Contributing To Turnover Among Critical Care Nurses During The Transition To Practice Period, Paula M. Gellner

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: New nurses are the major source of hiring for most hospitals. They fill vacancies left by seasoned nurses. As a result, an experience-complexity gap is created. The turnover of new graduate nurses is as high as 85% in the first two years of employment. Despite previous efforts to improve the transition to practice, turnover at the local level remain high.

Purpose/Specific Aims: The purpose of this study was to determine the most important factors contributing to turnover and the opportunities to mitigate or reduce turnover in the critical care setting.

The specific aims were to evaluate the perceptions of …

Top-View Method As A Robust Alternative For Contact Angle Measurement, Bi-Min Zhang Newby, Emmanuel Agyei Mar 2026

Top-View Method As A Robust Alternative For Contact Angle Measurement, Bi-Min Zhang Newby, Emmanuel Agyei

University Research

This study validates the top-view method for contact angle measurement, based on the spherical cap assumption, as a practical alternative to conventional side-view techniques. It is particularly useful when side-view imaging is challenging, such as on rough, deformable, irregular, or confined areas where baseline visibility, meridian clarity, or drop symmetry is compromised. To address these challenges, this study details the simultaneous acquisition of top and side-view images of sessile drops along with precise drop volume via drop mass measurements. The contact angles were then deduced from drop volume and contact area based on the spherical cap assumption. Contact angles of …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Purposes: Burnout is a challenge to health systems and clinical outcomes (Maslach & Leiter, 2016). Recently, negative impacts on clinical faculty and trainees have also been recognized (Low et al. 2019; Hammoudi, Soltani, Dalli, Alsarraj & Malki, 2023). While the US population increases, higher education struggles to meet a growing need for nurses over the next decade (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023). Downward trends in nursing program enrollment following the Covid-19 pandemic, insufficient number of faculty, clinical sites, and budget constraints (American Academy of Colleges of Nurses [AACN], 2023) have highlighted a need for explorations on how burnout may structurally …

Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle: Exploring Sustainability Solutions With Denim, Larissa Otterstrom Mar 2026

Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle: Exploring Sustainability Solutions With Denim, Larissa Otterstrom

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This literature review and recommendation report was created in order to compile the current research surrounding sustainable fashion, denim textiles, and textile waste. The review is focused on the current state of the fashion industry, specifically with denim textiles. Denim is a high-use fabric, known for its durability and versatility. However, with the rise of the fast fashion industry, in which textiles are being produced at a faster rate but at a lower quality, and denim is no longer being designed to last. There is limited research on how this shift in consumption patterns has impacted textile creation and the …

Anhedonia Underlies The Association Between Childhood Unpredictability And Adult Ptsd Symptoms: Evidence From Three Independent Longitudinal Cohorts, Christopher Hunt, Laura M. Glynn, Elysia Poggi Davis, Tallie Z. Baram, Caroline M. Nievergelt, Giovanni Castillo, Christian Cortes, Christine Y. Chang, Dewleen Baker, Victoria B. Risbrough

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Unpredictability in the child’s environment has recently emerged as a significant and unique form of early life adversity (ELA). Cross-sectional studies have linked childhood unpredictability with increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in adults; however, no prospective studies have tested the link between childhood unpredictability and PTSD risk in later life, nor what processes, such as increased anhedonia symptoms, might mediate such risk. Here, we leveraged three distinct prospective, longitudinal cohorts to test the hypothesis that unpredictability during childhood contributes to adult PTSD via worsening anhedonia symptoms.

Methods

Participants were male service members (n=314), adult females (n=170), and adolescents …
