This study aimed to show the effect of sweeteners Sodium cyclamate and aspartame on culture media and its role in the enhancement of the growth of some clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter. Results showed that Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were unable to grow in low concentration of aspartame (0.9, 1.8 mg/ml) but they showed well growth at relatively high concentrations of this compound. Results also showed that Enterobacter spp was the best growers (109 cells/ml) at high concentration of aspartame (9.0 mg/ml) P> 0.05 . Sodium cyclamate enhanced the growth of E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae ,and Enterobacter spp. …

Determination Of Heavy Elements Levels In Blood Of Children With Anemia Living At Al- Najaf City., Rasha S. Nima, Maha A. Al-Shamri, Mustafa A. Al-Kadium, Hussein Al-Shahin
Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal
This study aimed to determine Fe ,Pb , Mn ,Se, Cu ,and Zn levels in the blood of children with anemia , living at Al- Najaf City ,as indicators of environmental pollution in this city. Sixty five children (mean age 7.8 ±0.5) including 34 girls , 28 boys having anemia and the ages matched healthy children 29 girls and 28 boys ,were studied .We observed iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in 35 child (16 girls ,19 boys) ,and only anemia (OA) in 30 child (15 girls ,15 boys). It was found that significant difference of Hb, PCV ,MCV (P<0.01) , and ferritin(P<0.001) values in IDA patients (both girls and boys)were found, when compared with healthy children. The results show that there are significantly higher levels of Pb , Mn , and Zn ,in the serum of children in (IDA) group( both girls and boys) in comparison with their control groups . While Se , and Cu levels were significantly lower in (OA) and(IDA) groups , girls and boys, as related to their control groups. In conclusion ,children with iron deficient anemia are more sensitive to the pollutants and more at risk as compared to healthy children . Their bloods are considered as an index of biologically active metals in the body, reflecting direct interaction of atmosphericpollution of a population.

The increasing radiation exposure to patient from CT has been of concern to radiologists, medical physicists. The aim of this study is to reduce radiation dose from head computed tomography (CT) by using a technique with low tube voltage (90 Kv) instead of (120 Kv). A phantom for measurement of the radiation dose and a phantom containing low-contrast objects were scanned with a 16–detector row CT scanner at 120 kV and 90 kV. The tube current–time product settings were 100–560 mAs, and the doses at the center and periphery of the phantom were measured. The effective dose and the DLP were …

This study included five Iraqi families from four provinces, many members who suffered from congenital fragile X chromosome. Five family pedigrees were drawn up very clearly to follow the pattern of fragile X chromosome. The study showed that there is marked discrepancy in the sex ratio, with only boys affected. Females are affected only if they were homozygous, Heterozygous (carrier) females were clinically normal but transmitted the disease to 35% of their sons, and there i s one in two risks that their daughters too were carriers. The fragile X chromosome was never transmitted directly from affected father to his …

The pleural effusion is an occasion clinical presentation of tuberculosis and lung cancer and clear differentiation of this condition is critical, as it appeared as typical lymphocytic pleural effusion in both diseases. There is a dominance of Th1 response in tuberculous pleurisy, a matter which encourages the evaluation of Th1 cytokines in order to reveal a possible diagnostic tool. Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) as a major product of Th1, Interleukin- 12 (IL-12) and (IL-18) as IFN-γ inducing cytokines were evaluated in 39 patient's pleural effusions (10 tuberculous and 29 lung cancer) using ELISA. Our results demonstrated significantly increased levels of IFN-γ, IL-12 …
