From Sunscreen To Seafood: Tracing The Ecological And Human Health Risks Of Oxybenzone Contamination In Local Fish, Alyssa Brasko

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Oxybenzone (benzophenone-3) is a widely used ultraviolet (UV) filter in sunscreens, offering protection against harmful radiation but raising significant environmental concerns due to its persistence and toxicity in aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to investigate the bioaccumulation and ecological impact of oxybenzone in fish species along Florida’s Space Coast, contributing to a broader understanding of its environmental fate and potential human exposure through seafood consumption. The research will employ advanced analytical techniques, including Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), to quantify oxybenzone levels in locally sourced fish. Fish samples will be obtained from the non-profit organization ORCA …

Exploring Aquatic Microbial Frontiers: Investigating Water Quality In Central Florida Lakes, Leah Robinson

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

This study evaluated bacterial contamination across fifteen freshwater sites in Central Florida to assess how land use influences microbial water quality. Samples were collected from lakes and one river and tested for coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli (E.coli) using coliform detection broth, indole dye confirmation, and plating on EMB agar for colony count. Fourteen of the fifteen sites (93%) tested positive for coliform bacteria, and thirteen (87%) tested positive for E.coli. Colony-forming unit (CFU) counts ranged from 420 to 110000 CFU/mL, with Lake Okahumpka showing the highest contamination and Lake Sumter the only site testing negative for both coliforms and …

Development Of A 3d Lung Epithelial Model To Study Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infection Under Simulated Microgravity, Mariposa C. Magee Mar 2026

Development Of A 3d Lung Epithelial Model To Study Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infection Under Simulated Microgravity, Mariposa C. Magee

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The human immune system is complex and highly responsive to physiological stress, especially when subjected to spaceflight conditions. Spaceflight conditions have shown to increase the risk of opportunistic infections such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This clinically relevant, gram-negative pathogen has been found in space flight-related environments such as on the International Space Station. Individuals in spaceflight environments are prone to experiencing immune dysfunction and altered cytokine profiles and could be at a greater risk for developing an opportunistic infection such as P. aeruginosa during the duration in spaceflight. P. aeruginosa poses a threat to individuals both on Earth and in spaceflight …

Differential Treatment Responses Among Comorbidity-Based Subgroups In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Clinical Epilepsy, Jenna E. Franklin, Richard E. Frye Md, Phd

Cumberland Medica

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have elevated rates of epilepsy, seizures, and abnormal electroencephalograms compared to the general population. Many also experience co-occurring comorbidities, which have been associated with epilepsy severity. Although various treatments have shown improvements in seizures and ASD symptomatology, there is limited research on how treatment effectiveness varies by comorbidity profiles. In this study, we characterized individuals with ASD and clinical seizures into specific patient cohorts based on comorbidities and evaluated the responses to traditional antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), non-AED seizure treatments, and non-traditional ASD interventions. Data were collected from a parent-reported, cross-sectional survey previously used to …

Bio-Integrated Adaptive Seat System For Real-Time Vibration Mitigation In Aviation Utilizing Deep Neural Networks, Tyler Campbell Mar 2026

Bio-Integrated Adaptive Seat System For Real-Time Vibration Mitigation In Aviation Utilizing Deep Neural Networks, Tyler Campbell

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

In the aviation industry, intense and prolonged vibrations during flight, particularly for seated individuals, induce whole-body vibrations. When these vibrations are on the lower spectrum (generally 1-20 Hz), they resonate with the human body’s natural biomechanical frequencies, causing certain parts of the body to undergo amplified stress. After long-term exposure, these amplified stresses can cause chronic health issues including spondylosis, vestibular dysfunction, oscillopsia, and hypertension. Beyond the chronic health implications, these vibrations also contribute to pilot fatigue, degraded visual perception, and can compromise mission effectiveness and flight safety. Current aviation systems utilize both passive (e.g., foams, material layering, etc.) and …

Paddle Mount And Orientation Dock, Diego Luna Roy Su, Junior Tangou, Leo Herrin, Omar Marquez, Sabrina Sinchuri, Diego Luna, Nathan Scalf

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The servicing of spacecraft and other structures in microgravity requires the use of many tools. Current systems require repetitive action to install the tool to the dock, which can be cumbersome and quickly fatigue astronauts. The servicing of spacecraft and other systems in microgravity necessitates a robust device to mount tools to a tool dock. The 2026 NASA Micro-g NExT Challenge calls for a device to fit this need. Our tool mount proposal uses a spring-loaded snap-fit mechanism to securely attach tools to a tool dock. The docking system is made with aluminum 7075-T6 to balance weight, strength, and the …

Metabolomics In Precision Medicine: Application And Prospect In Cancer Research, Ming-Shi Shiao

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Metabolomics is the most recent and final discipline among the post-genomic, multiomics fields. It encompasses key technologies in systems biology, providing an overview of low-molecular-weight metabolites while examining disturbances to offer pathophysiological explanations. The two key analytical tools in metabolomics are nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, which includes gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Metabolomic research relies on a three-stage data generation process: the first stage involves precise analytical chemistry to produce data; the second stage employs multivariate statistical analysis; and the last stage uses big data as a reference for comparison to establish biochemical, metabolic, and …

Antibiotic Use And Resistance: Knowledge, Awareness, Attitudes, And Misconceptions Among Secondary School Students In Al Ain, Patil Arsen Maradian

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

This thesis explores students' knowledge, awareness, attitudes, and misconceptions regarding antibiotic use and resistance in secondary school. Since antibiotic resistance is both a biological threat and a general health problem influenced by educational and sociocultural factors, the objectives of the research are to determine the level of antibiotic-related knowledge and to assess how a particular pattern of intuitive reasoning can lead to entrenched misconceptions. The mixed-method design implemented in this study combined a survey based on the World Health Organization’s Antibiotic Resistance Multi-Country Public Awareness Survey, along with other validated instruments and qualitative research in the form of interviews in …

College Football Free Agency: The Transactional Nature Of Big-Time College Football Recruiting, Chris Corr, Branden Johnson, Amanda L. Paule-Koba Mar 2026

College Football Free Agency: The Transactional Nature Of Big-Time College Football Recruiting, Chris Corr, Branden Johnson, Amanda L. Paule-Koba

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

This study explored how the transfer portal has transformed college football recruiting by disrupting traditional relationship-based practices and accelerating the shift toward a transactional performance-driven model. Drawing on Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, field, and capital, the research examines how recruiting coordinators navigate evolving pressures around talent acquisition, NIL compensation, and compressed recruiting timelines. Findings from comprehensive interviews with five Power-4 recruiting personnel reveal that relationships are increasingly leveraged for short-term gain. The findings of this study indicate the transfer portal has created an opaque high-stakes marketplace where trust is limited, valuation is speculative, and institutional pedigree/resources heavily influence opportunities. The …

The Sour Truth: Maine's Refusal To Provide Agricultural Workers Equal Employment Rights By Statutory Exclusion, Natalie Jump Mar 2026

The Sour Truth: Maine's Refusal To Provide Agricultural Workers Equal Employment Rights By Statutory Exclusion, Natalie Jump

Maine Law Review

Agricultural work is some of the most dangerous and grueling work there is, but you wouldn't know that from the way Maine's wage and hours laws have treated agricultural workers, both historically and today. Until 2025, farmworkers were not entitled to Maine minimum wage and were guaranteed only the significantly lower federal minimum wage. The Maine State Legislature decided that agricultural workers deserved more and passed a law during the first session of the 132nd Legislature that required agricultural workers to be paid Maine minimum wage. However, agricultural workers remain statutorily exempt from the definition of "employee" and therefore still …
