The Influence Of Relational Aggression And Attachment Insecurity On Sexual Dissatisfaction: Using The Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model, Min Xu Phd Lmft, Lee N. Johnson, Sarah M. Coyne

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The majority of studies on couple aggressive behaviors have focused on more overt forms (e.g., intimate partner violence), while findings on covert patterns of aggression are lacking. This study aims to explore the direct and indirect effects of two types of relational aggression (i.e., love withdrawal and social sabotage) on sexual dissatisfaction, with attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance as the mediators. Participants were 324 married couples from a large northwestern city in the United States. Direct actor effects from love withdrawal were found for both partners, while direct actor effects from social sabotage were only found for husbands. Direct partner …

Faculty Research 2023

TMEM161B encodes an evolutionarily conserved widely expressed novel 8-pass trans- membrane protein of unknown function in human. Here we identify TMEM161B homozygous hypomorphic missense variants in our recessive polymicrogyria (PMG) cohort. Patients carrying TMEM161B mutations exhibit striking neocortical PMG and intellectual disability. Tmem161b knockout mice fail to develop midline hem- ispheric cleavage, whereas knock-in of patient mutations and patient-derived brain organoids show defects in apical cell polarity and radial glial scaffolding. We found that TMEM161B modulates actin filopodia, functioning upstream of the Rho-GTPase CDC42. Our data link TMEM161B with human PMG, likely regulating radial glia apical polarity during neocortical development.

Coupling Nitrate Capture With Ammonia Production Through Bifunctional Redox-Electrodes, Kwiyong Kim, Alexandra Zagalskaya, Jing Lian Ng, Jaeyoung Hong, Vitaly Alexandrov, Tuan Anh Pham, Xiao Su

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Nitrate is a ubiquitous aqueous pollutant from agricultural and industrial activities. At the same time, conversion of nitrate to ammonia provides an attractive solution for the coupled environmental and energy challenge underlying the nitrogen cycle, by valorizing a pollutant to a carbon-free energy carrier and essential chemical feedstock. Mass transport limitations are a key obstacle to the efficient conversion of nitrate to ammonia from water streams, due to the dilute concentration of nitrate. Here, we develop bifunctional electrodes that couple a nitrate-selective redox-electrosorbent (polyaniline) with an electrocatalyst (cobalt oxide) for nitrate to ammonium conversion. We demonstrate the synergistic reactive separation …

Evaluation Of Pollination Traits Important For Hybrid Wheat Development In Great Plains Germplasm, Nicholas Garst, Vikas Belamkar, Amanda Easterly, Mary J. Guttieri, Hannah Stoll, Amir M. H. Ibrahim, P. Stephen Baenziger

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Hybrid wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) offers potential yield advantages over conventional inbred cultivars. For hybrid wheat to be a commercial success, the cost to produce the hybrid seed needs to be minimized. Although wheat is naturally selfpollinated, hybrid wheat seed production can be improved by increasing the amount and availability of pollen for cross-pollination. This research examined 19 pollination traits using the Hard Winter Wheat Association Mapping Panel for 3 years. Anther extrusion, pollen 50 date (date at which a genotype has 50% of spikes pollinating), plant height, and pollination duration (last spike pollen 50 date minus first spike …

This editorial chapter addresses the problem of burnout in academic libraries by introducing a fusion of principles from trauma-informed care (TIC) and Constructive Living (CL) to offer unique, easy-to-incorporate plans of action to identify and mitigate symptoms of burnout. These two action-based philosophies, which may be new to most readers, provide strategies for considering, practicing, and adopting perspectives and behaviors that may give those suffering from burnout new ways of thinking about their professional and personal lives. We identify accessible opportunities to connect mind and body in self-care to neutralize negative self-talk, regain perspective and balance, and foster lifelong resiliency …

The Human Gut Microbiome, Tammy J. Ladue Jan 2023

The Human Gut Microbiome, Tammy J. Ladue

InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship

Although the gut microbiome has been known for many years, it wasn’t until the mid-1970’s that a relationship was hypothesized in medical journals. With the advent of the Human Genome Project in 2001 (Adak & Khan, 2019) further investigation into the types and relationship of the microbes in the GI tract were seriously studied.

Utilizing DNA & RNA tracking and culture techniques found during the Genome Project, more information was found on the Gut Microbiome. It was as of 2017 that the knowledge on the Microbiome began to show promise. It has been speculated that the GI tract has approximately …

The End Of The “Chemical Imbalance” Theory Of Depression - What Now?, Austin Brown Jan 2023

The End Of The “Chemical Imbalance” Theory Of Depression - What Now?, Austin Brown

Population Health Research Brief Series

For decades, those diagnosed with depression have been told they suffer from a “chemical imbalance.” This explanation involves neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, thought to be the main neurochemical responsible for major depressive disorders. Growing research challenges this theory and the need for medication therapies for depressive symptoms. This brief summarizes new findings examining the theory that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance and calls for healthcare professionals and patients to consider the market influences and social structures that impact health.

Faculty Publications

Background The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic; characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic; and examine expectations for future health spending and put …

Born To Care (Or Not): How Gender Role Attitudes Affect Occupational Sorting, Carlianne Patrick, Heather Stephens, Amanda Weinstein Jan 2023

Born To Care (Or Not): How Gender Role Attitudes Affect Occupational Sorting, Carlianne Patrick, Heather Stephens, Amanda Weinstein

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Occupation segregation explains a significant portion of the gender wage gap, with women working in lower paid female-dominated occupations. We examine how childhood and adolescent exposure to gender biased norms about work influence this occupational sorting. We document that early life exposure to traditional gender role attitudes, which view women’s role as caretakers, increase women’s likelihood of employment in care occupations and decrease the likelihood for men, thereby increasing the gender care occupation gap. A decomposition of the factors affecting this sorting shows that a primary channel is through differences in the choice of post-secondary field of study or major. …

Narrowing The Gap Between Research And Policy: Using Rapid Evaluation During The Covid-19 Crisis, K Anil

School of Health Professions

An evidence base is vital to ensure well-informed policies with systematic processes.1,2 However, A research-to-policy gap exists that is widened by the discrepancy between the extensive time it takes to conduct conventional academic research and the short timescale over which policy-makers are often required to make decisions.2 This is especially concerning in times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, that demanded an avalanche of data, analysis, and interpretation to be provided over a very short period of time. Rapid evaluation can be used to generate research-based evidence under pressure to inform decision-making and policy. Existing literature clearly details the …

Landscape And Site Factors Drive Invasive Phragmites Management And Native Plant Recovery Across Chesapeake Bay Wetlands, Christine B. Rohal, Eric L. G. Hazelton, Eliza K. Mcfarland, Rebekah Downard, Melissa K. Mccormick, Dennis F. Whigham, Karin M. Kettenring

Watershed Sciences Student Research

Successful invasive plant management—where invaders are sufficiently reduced and diverse native plant communities recover—remains an elusive goal for land managers. The site- and landscape-scale drivers of variable management outcomes and vegetation recovery are poorly understood due to a lack of rigorous experiments that characterize longer term vegetation trends across contexts. We present the results of a five-year experiment across eight subestuaries of Chesapeake Bay, representing a gradient of watersheds with differing dominant land-use types and anthropogenic impacts, to evaluate invasive and native plant response to herbicide management. The focal invader, Phragmites australis (common reed), is one of the most aggressive …

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is one of the major diseases arising from chronic alcohol consumption and is one of the most common causes of liver-related morbidity and mortality. ALD includes asymptomatic liver steatosis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and alcohol-associated hepatitis and its complications. The progression of ALD involves complex cell-cell and organ-organ interactions. We focus on the impact of alcohol on dysregulation of homeostatic mechanisms and regulation of injury and repair in the liver. In particular, we discuss recent advances in understanding the disruption of balance between programmed cell death and prosurvival pathways, such as autophagy and membrane trafficking, in the pathogenesis …
