Nursing Faculty Experiences With Interactive Learning In The Associate Degree Nursing Classroom, Katheryn M. Csonka
Nursing Faculty Experiences With Interactive Learning In The Associate Degree Nursing Classroom, Katheryn M. Csonka
Dissertations
The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore associate degree nurse faculty perceptions and experiences with the use of interactive learning in their classroom. Interactive learning is an approach to teaching and learning that promotes student learning with an active process. The implementation and continued use of interactive learning can be difficult for nurse educators who may be influenced by their previous perceptions and experience with use. There is a plethora of knowledge on the benefits of interactive learning with students, yet there is a gap in literature specific to nursing faculty experiences in the nursing classroom..
Students’ Contrasting Their Experiences Of Teacher Expectations In Streamed And Mixed Ability Classes: A Study Of Grade 10 Students In Western Australia, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand
Students’ Contrasting Their Experiences Of Teacher Expectations In Streamed And Mixed Ability Classes: A Study Of Grade 10 Students In Western Australia, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Many secondary schools sort students into ‘ability’-based classes, but research shows that streaming students by ability is inequitable and does not improve student academic results. There has been little qualitative research that considers students’ experiences of streaming, with none that compares students’ experiences in classes that are streamed against the same students’ experiences in other classes that are mixed-ability. The research in this paper explains student experiences of differences between their streamed and mixed-ability classrooms, including the perceived influence on their educational outcomes. The study is unique because the results project the voices of 25 Grade 10 secondary school students …

Selective Infrared Neural Inhibition Can Be Reproduced By Resistive Heating, Junqi Zhuo, Chloe E. Weidrick, Yehe Liu, Michael A. Moffitt, Hillel J. Chiel, Michael W. Jenkins
Faculty Scholarship
Objectives: Small-diameter afferent axons carry various sensory signals that are critical for vital physiological conditions but sometimes contribute to pathologies. Infrared (IR) neural inhibition (INI) can induce selective heat block of small-diameter axons, which holds potential for translational applications such as pain management. Previous research suggested that IR–heating-induced acceleration of voltage-gated potassium channel kinetics is the mechanism for INI. Therefore, we hypothesized that other heating methods, such as resistive heating (RH) in a cuff, could reproduce the selective inhibition observed in INI. Materials and Methods: We conducted ex vivo nerve-heating experiments on pleural-abdominal connective nerves of Aplysia californica using both …

Endometriosis is a pathological condition of the female reproductive tract characterized by the existence of endometrium-like tissue at ectopic sites, affecting 10% of women between the age 15 and 49 in the USA. However, currently there is no reliable non-invasive method to detect the presence of endometriosis without surgery and many women find hormonal therapy and surgery as ineffective in avoiding the recurrences. There is a lack of knowledge on the etiology and the factors that contribute to the development of endometriosis. A growing body of recent evidence suggests an association between gut microbiota and endometriosis pathophysiology. However, the direct …

The Effect Of Spinal Muscle Fatigue And Psychosocial Factors On Pressure-Pain Threshold In Healthy Adults, Susan Mais, Jo Armour Smith
The Effect Of Spinal Muscle Fatigue And Psychosocial Factors On Pressure-Pain Threshold In Healthy Adults, Susan Mais, Jo Armour Smith
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Objective. Pain sensitivity decreases following isometric exercise. It is not clear whether this exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH) occurs to the same extent in men and women. It is also unclear if the effect is systemic or local to the exercised musculature. The aim of our study was to investigate whether fatiguing isometric exercise of the spinal and hip extensors would result in increased pressure pain threshold (PPT) at sites local to and remote from the exercised muscles in healthy men and women and whether there is a relationship between central sensitization, psychosocial factors, and PPT. Subjects. 35 healthy adults …

Leadership And Its Impact On Supervision In The Hospitality Industry, Patricia Peprah, Williams Kwasi Peprah
Faculty Publications
The hospitality industry has a high human capital requirement that depends on leadership to provide supervision for the utmost customer satisfaction. Based on this, this research looks at the impact of leadership on supervision among hotels in Ghana. This research was a causal research design. It investigated the correlational effect of leadership on supervision in the hospitality industry in Ghana. Data obtained from Ghana Tourism Authority’s National Data 2020 on Tourism Human Resource put the employees of 3 to 5 stars hotels as the study population at 7,347. The researcher used a Raosoft sample size calculator to determine a sample …

Alerting Services As Tools For Promoting The Uptake Of Open Access Resources In Higher Learning Institutions. Case Of The University Of Zambia, Eness Munzya Miyanda Chitumbo Dr., Thomas Van Der Walt Prof.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
ABSTRACT
This study aimed at identifying and recommending appropriate alerting services to promote awareness and uptake of open access resources in higher learning institutions such as the University of Zambia. It identifies itself with the pragmatic paradigm; using the mixed-methods approach and a case study mixed-methods design to investigate the problem of low uptake of open access resources and how alerting services can improve the uptake. The study further applied the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology to provide the context for examining and explaining open access usage and promotion.
The study used University of Zambia students, researchers …

Increased von Willebrand factor (VWF) clearance plays a key role in the pathogenesis of type 1 and type 2 von Willebrand disease (VWD). However, the pathological mechanisms involved in patients with mild to moderate reductions in plasma VWF:Ag (range, 30-50 IU/dL; low VWF) remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that enhanced VWF clearance may contribute to the pathobiology of low VWF. Patients with low VWF were recruited to the LoVIC study after ethics approval and receipt of informed consent. Desmopressin was administered IV in 75 patients, and blood samples were drawn at baseline and at the …

Gene regulation via chemically induced dimerization (CID) is useful for biomedical research. However, the number, type, versatility, and in vivo applications of CID tools remain limited. Here, we demonstrate the development of proteolysis-targeting chimera-based scalable CID (PROTAC-CID) platforms by systematically engineering the available PROTAC systems for inducible gene regulation and gene editing. Further, we show orthogonal PROTAC-CIDs that can fine-tune gene expression at gradient levels or multiplex biological signals with different logic gating operations. Coupling the PROTAC-CID platform with genetic circuits, we achieve digitally inducible expression of DNA recombinases, base- and prime-editors for transient genome manipulation. Finally, we package a …
