Treatment Patterns And Outcomes In Patients With Pancoast Tumors: A National Cancer Database Analysis, Hollis E. Hutchings, Jessica Cox, Jordan Westra, Yong-Fang Kuo, Ikenna C. Okereke
Surgery Articles
Background: Pancoast tumors represent 5% of non-small cell lung cancers. Complete surgical resection and no lymph node involvement are important positive prognostic factors. Previous literature has identified neoadjuvant chemoradiation treatment, followed by surgical resection, as the standard of care. But many institutions choose upfront surgery. Our goal was to identify the treatment patterns and outcomes in patients with node-negative Pancoast tumors using the National Cancer Database (NCDB).
Methods: The NCDB was queried from 2004 through 2017 to identify all patients who had undergone surgery for a Pancoast tumor. Treatment patterns, including the percentage of patients who received neoadjuvant treatment, were …

Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
The government implements social assistance programs for poor families and vulnerable groups. Therefore, the implementation is still facing various challenges. One of the toughest challenges is smoking behaviour. As the income has been increasing, the cigarette’s expense is also high. Cigarette’s expenditure substitutes other basic needs, such as nutritional foods, health, and education expenses. This study analyses smoking behaviour in social assistance recipients and its impact on quality of life. By using qualitative method, particularly the Rapid Assessment Procedure, data were obtained through in-depth interviews. The study uses purposive method to collect samples in East Java, both Malang City and …

A Preliminary Quranic Review Of Consciousness, Hana Naufanita, Nurwahidin Nurwahidin, Ghozali Ghozali
Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
Consciousness is a classical discourse among scientists, philosophers, and theologians across time and space. It has become a hard problem from many angles: What it is? How do we approach it? How it is being discussed? What is the objective? Etc. The vast scope of the topic causes consciousness to become an intriguing topic to many disciplines. This paper offers multidisciplinary research to consciousness. This approach enables us to spot the problem, intersection, and division across disciplines. We found that there are convergences and divergences to consciousness as multidisciplinary object of study. First, consciousness is related to the mind, but …
The Immune Modulation On Innate Immunity, From Pathogen Recognition To Fungal Clearance., Ko-Wei Liu
The Immune Modulation On Innate Immunity, From Pathogen Recognition To Fungal Clearance., Ko-Wei Liu
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The human lung is not sterile but a complex environment with various microorganisms. Besides commensals in the lung, hundreds to thousands of individual microbiomes enter the lung every day but without causing the symptom. Host innate immunity plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis of the lung environment and as the first defense line against pathogens. Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) is a saprophytic filamentous fungus that can cause human disease in immune compromised patients. However, with functional innate immunity, immune cells can quickly recognize pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) from A. fumigatus through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). The activation of …

Research on the political science profession has shown that homophilous research networks—that is, those organized along the lines of gender and race/ethnicity—reproduce hierarchies. Research networks composed of white men experience the most prestige and lead to the most opportunities. This study documents homophilous networks in a setting where they likely are nurtured: academic conferences. Drawing data from the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association, we examine the correspondence between the gender and the racial/ethnic composition of section members, panelists, and audience members for four research sections: Political Methodology; Political Psychology; Race, Ethnicity, and Politics; and Women and …

Strategies To Decrease Drug Diversion Among Anesthesia Providers, Cat Mueller
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a complicated and detrimental disease that disproportionately affects certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). Long work hours, lack of sleep, inadequate work-life balance, maladaptive coping skills, and burnout are factors associated with SUD. Personal factors include personality type, family or personal history of addiction, inadequate support system, underlying psychological disorders or history of trauma. There is a higher incidence of death from overdose with anesthesia providers than any other subspecialty. Drug diversion is a consequence of SUD and is defined as the redirection of medication from its intended destination for personal use, sale, or distribution. Consequences …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is recognized for its difficulty to diagnose and its subjective symptomatology. There is neither a known cure nor a recommended therapeutic diet to aid in the multidisciplinary treatment. We conducted a systematic review to investigate if diets can improve pain symptoms of fibromyalgia. Through the PubMed search in March 2022, 126 abstracts were identified. We included both intervention and observational studies of diets and pain symptoms among patients with FMS. After screening titles, abstracts, and full-texts, 12 studies, including 11 intervention and one observational study, were selected. These studies included 546 participants and investigated plant-based diets ( …
The Hepatic Mitochondrial Pyruvate Carrier As A Regulator Of Systemic Metabolism And A Therapeutic Target For Treating Metabolic Disease, Kyle S Mccommis, Brian N Finck
The Hepatic Mitochondrial Pyruvate Carrier As A Regulator Of Systemic Metabolism And A Therapeutic Target For Treating Metabolic Disease, Kyle S Mccommis, Brian N Finck
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Pyruvate sits at an important metabolic crossroads of intermediary metabolism. As a product of glycolysis in the cytosol, it must be transported into the mitochondrial matrix for the energy stored in this nutrient to be fully harnessed to generate ATP or to become the building block of new biomolecules. Given the requirement for mitochondrial import, it is not surprising that the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) has emerged as a target for therapeutic intervention in a variety of diseases characterized by altered mitochondrial and intermediary metabolism. In this review, we focus on the role of the MPC and related metabolic pathways …

The Trouble With Time Served, Kimberly Kessler Ferzan
The Trouble With Time Served, Kimberly Kessler Ferzan
BYU Law Review
Every jurisdiction in the United States gives criminal defendants "credit" against their sentence for the time they spend detained pretrial. In a world of mass incarceration and overcriminalization that disproportionately impacts people of color, this practice appears to be a welcome mechanism for mercy and justice. In fact, how ever, crediting detainees for time served is perverse. It harms the innocent. A defendant who is found not guilty, or whose case is dismissed, gets nothing. Crediting time served also allows the state to avoid internalizing the full costs of pretrial detention, thereby making overinclusive detention standards less expensive. Finally, crediting …

A Study Of The Concept Of Heterotopian Space In The Dutch Cemetery At The Bogor Botanical Garden, Nur Muhammad Arief Kurniawan, Irmawati Marwoto
International Review of Humanities Studies
A cemetery is a land that is used as a place for burial of bodies. However, despite its obvious function, in European Christian culture which lasted for centuries, the view of the true cemetery was always changing, so that the function of the cemetery was often mixed with other completely unrelated functions of space. This phenomenon is highlighted by Foucault in his theory of heterotopia space (1967). In this regard, this study intends to look at other spaces based on the phenomena found in the Dutch Cemetery at the Bogor Botanical Garden. This cemetery is interesting to study using Foucault's …
The Dynamics Of Military-Police Relations In Post-Authoritarian Indonesia (1998 To 2020), Bayu A. Yulianto
The Dynamics Of Military-Police Relations In Post-Authoritarian Indonesia (1998 To 2020), Bayu A. Yulianto
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Among myriad significant institutional changes in post-authoritarian Indonesia (1998-present) is the split of Indonesian police (POLRI) from the armed forces (ABRI, renamed into TNI after 1999). No longer locked in a dominant-subordinate configuration, the interaction between both institutions intensified in areas where they intersect. Drawing upon the theory of Strategic Action Field (SAF), this study attempts to capture the dynamics along the newly-established trajectory. It shall be argued that far from being one-dimensional, the relationship between both institutions has been marked by conflict, competition, and cooperation; depending on the SAF. Finally, this research proposes a new framework to assess the …

Belas For The Prevention Of Child Marriage Among Sasak Community, West Lombok, Reni Kartikawati, Ni Nyoman Sri Natih, Sari Damar Ratri
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
This paper aims to evaluate the compatibility of the belas mechanism, which separates prospective brides still considered children (merariq kodeq), in West Lombok Regency with the provisions of Child Protection Law No. 35/2014. While prior research in various countries has primarily focused on interventions and child marriage prevention programs, this study takes a different approach by examining the intricate relationship between children (those under 18 years of age) and the broader social system. To comprehensively explore this relationship, our team adopts Bronfenbrenner's socio-ecological model, which encompasses various stages of a child's life. This model considers individual biology, interactions …

The Organization Of Islamic Cooperation (Oic): Opportunities And Challenges For Practicing Culturally-Sensitive Mediation In Intra-Muslim Conflicts, Nirvana Ahmad
Theses and Dissertations
Established in 1969, the OIC sat a unique paradigm in the international order as an intergovernmental organization that claims a religious identity and mandate: working for Muslim unity and interests. In that pursuit, it has assumed the function of the peaceful settlement of disputes as one of its primary roles. Over half a century of its existence, not only did the OIC drift away from its founding principles and commitments; it is now condemned for turning into an arena for polarization among Muslims, where unchecked geopolitical competition has aroused rampant violence of all sorts.
The literature on the OIC extensively …

Poverty Depiction In Egyptian Films Across The Decades: A Comparative Content Analysis Of Framing Poor Characters In Egyptian Cinema Between 1955 And 2010, Moustafa Abdelfadil Daly
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the framing of poverty in Egyptian film productions during a 55-year period from 1955 to 2010. It uses a qualitative analysis to identify and analyze main characters depicted to be poor in films produced under three political eras; Gamal Abdel-Nasser, Anwar El Sadat, and Hosny Mubarak. It analyzes the frequency of featuring poor characters and whether the depiction of poor people was favorable or unfavorable based on three constructs; accountability of poverty, heroism, and honesty. Out of 41 main characters studied, 22 were found to be poor, with Nasser's era witnessing the highest representation of poverty. Most …

Long-Standing Narrative Of Indonesian Islamic Women In Four Novels By Habiburrahman El Shirazy, Dian Rizky Azhari, M. Yoesoef, Turita Indah Setyani
International Review of Humanities Studies
Discussions about Islamic women have been buzzing in Indonesia after the collapse of the New Order. Its presence directly contradicts the narratives of women that were influenced by western thought, such as liberalism and secularism, as well as by global islamization movement from the Middle East. The conflicts that arose were about the role of women in the public sphere, women's independence, women's bodies and sexuality. This study aims to find similarities between ideas about Islamic women and the practice of Islamic women's discourse in Indonesian society. This study uses an intrinsic study method and a sociology of literature approach …

The Threat Of Covid-19 Pandemic In Social Network-Thinking, Poppy Setiawati Nurisnaeny, Rendy Ananta Prasetya, Suwedi Suwedi
International Review of Humanities Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic creates various dynamics of uncertainty that impact morbidity, mortality, and economic damage. The dynamics of these threats are expanding in the globalization era through networks and national security into a multidimensional sphere that tends to be unpredictable (Starvridis, 2015). Social transformation is always marked with certainties. Therefore, scientific regulations are needed to guide various operations, which functions as a principle in adapting to the quick-changing socio-cultural dynamics. This study aims to analyze the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic and strategic thinking steps in the ethnographic framework of social network thinking. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method …
