New Porous Nanomaterials For Battery And Supercapacitor, Yixian Pei
Doctoral Dissertations
Lithium-Sulfur batteries have a high energy storage capacity while their sulfur cathode suffers large volume change, polysulfides dissolution and shuttle effect, and capacity fading during long-term cycling. To help lock sulfur and mitigate these problems, we introduced halloysite, a natural clay material with a nanotube format, to disperse and confine sulfur nanoparticles as well as to suppress the dissolution and migration of polysulfides. Halloysite was made conductive by covering it with a glucose-derived carbon skin. Sulfur nanoparticles were then trapped in both the lumen and outside surface of individual nanotubes with a loading dosage up to 80 %. In this …

The absence of disease modifying treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is in large part a consequence of its complexity and heterogeneity. Deep clinical and biological phenotyping of people living with ALS would assist in the development of effective treatments and target specific biomarkers to monitor disease progression and inform on treatment efficacy. The objective of this paper is to present the Comprehensive Analysis Platform To Understand Remedy and Eliminate ALS (CAPTURE ALS), an open and translational platform for the scientific community currently in development. CAPTURE ALS is a Canadian-based platform designed to include participants' voices in its development and …
Pruritus In Chronic Liver Disease, Ranya Selim, Joseph Ahn
Pruritus In Chronic Liver Disease, Ranya Selim, Joseph Ahn
Gastroenterology Articles
Pruritus can be associated with chronic liver disease, particularly cholestatic liver disease. Although the pathophysiology is uncertain, there are a few proposed mechanisms and much is still being discovered. Workup involves an assessment to rule out a dermatologic, neurologic, psychogenic, or other underlying systemic disorder. First-line therapy is cholestyramine, which is generally well tolerated and effective. In those who fail cholestyramine, alternative drugs including rifampicin and μ-opioid receptor antagonists can be considered. If medical therapy is ineffective and pruritus is significant, alternative experimental therapies such as albumin dialysis, photopheresis, plasmapheresis, and biliary diversion can be considered.

Climate change, interacting with and exacerbating anthropogenic modifications to the landscape, is altering ecosystem structure and function, biodiversity, and species distributions. Among the most visible short-term impacts are the altered ecological roles of foundation species—those species, native or non-native—that create locally stable environmental conditions and strongly influence ecosystem services. Understanding the future of these species is crucial for projecting impacts on ecosystem services at both local and regional scales. Here we present foundation species by ecoregion study cases across the US South-Central Region (Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas), including C4 grasses, mesquite, and northern bobwhite in the Southern Great …

Effect Of Hyaluronic Acid And Kappa-Carrageenan On Milk Properties: Rheology, Protein Stability, Foaming, Water-Holding, And Emulsification Properties, Prafulla Salunke, Suresh G. Sutariya
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is now widely known for its ability to bind water and impart texture. The combined effects of HA and kappa-carrageenan (KC) have not yet been investigated, though. In this study, we looked at the synergistic effects of HA and KC (concentrations of 0.1 and 0.25%, and ratios of 85:15, 70:30, and 50:50 for each concentration) on the rheological properties, heat stability, protein phase separation, water-holding capacity, emulsification properties, and foaming properties of skim milk. When HA and KC were combined in various ratios with a skim milk sample, this resulted in lesser protein phase separation and a …

Variations In Signal-To-Noise Characteristics Of Tissue-Equivalent Attenuators For Mammographic Automatic Exposure Control System Performance Evaluation, Courtney K. Morrison, Erin B. Macdonald, Nicholas B. Bevins
Diagnostic Radiology Articles
PURPOSE: This work investigates the impact of tissue-equivalent attenuator choice on measured signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for automatic exposure control (AEC) performance evaluation in digital mammography. It also investigates how the SNR changes for each material when used to evaluate AEC performance across different mammography systems.
METHODS: AEC performance was evaluated for four mammography systems using seven attenuator sets at two thicknesses (4 and 8 cm). All systems were evaluated in 2D imaging mode, and one system was evaluated in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) mode. The methodology followed the 2018 ACR digital mammography quality control (DMQC) manual. Each system-attenuator-thickness combination was …

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a debilitating progressive illness that affects more than 10% of the world's population. In this literature review, we discussed the roles of nutritional interventions, lifestyle modifications, hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) control, and medications in delaying the progression of CKD. Walking, weight loss, low-protein diet (LPD), adherence to the alternate Mediterranean (aMed) diet, and Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)-2010 slow the progression of CKD. However, smoking and binge alcohol drinking increase the risk of CKD progression. In addition, hyperglycemia, altered lipid metabolism, low-grade inflammation, over-activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), and overhydration (OH) increase …

The Latest Interface: Using Data Privacy As A Sword And Shield In Antitrust Litigation, Sammi Chen
UC Law Journal
The new and growing intersection between data privacy and antitrust uses data privacy as both a sword and shield against antitrust liability. On one hand, large technology firms have begun using privacy as a business justification for alleged antitrust misconduct. On the other hand, private and government plaintiffs have raised privacy concerns in antitrust litigation. Although antitrust law and data privacy law are two distinct bodies of legal doctrines, there is literature suggesting their consolidation in certain contexts. The Hipster Antitrust movement and integrationist theory purport that data privacy should be included in an antitrust review when privacy is a …
Privacy Theater In The Bankruptcy Courts, Christopher G. Bradley
Privacy Theater In The Bankruptcy Courts, Christopher G. Bradley
UC Law Journal
The intersection between privacy law and the big business of consumer data has become a major focus of policymakers, scholars, the business community, and consumer advocates, yet the legal regime governing the commercial use of data remains contested and often unclear. The difficulty becomes particularly acute when a company is financially distressed. A healthy firm might hesitate to exploit private data out of concern that doing so would cause reputational harm or liability, but these scruples matter less to financially distressed firms.
Bankruptcy law provides for the appointment of a “consumer privacy ombudsman” to make a recommendation on whether debtors …

The increased attrition in the teacher workforce has policy makers at state and national levels attempting to fill vacancies from a candidate pool that is drying up. Particularly of interest is the percentage of beginning teachers who are leaving the profession early in their careers. Researchers have examined elements of preparation or induction programs in relation to teacher effectiveness to understand needs of preservice and novice teachers. Elements such as required coursework, clinical experiences, mentoring programs, and professional development have been studied. Some studies have examined preparedness in relation to student achievement or supervisor appraisals of novice teachers. Researchers have …

Prevalence Of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease In Overweight And Obese Children Seeking Ambulatory Healthcare In Nairobi, Kenya, Anne Njeri Mburu, Ahmed Laving, William Macharia, Joyce Sande
Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Background While linked to obesity and associated with an increased cardiovascular morbidity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an often-asymptomatic cause of chronic liver disease in children. Early detection provides opportunity for interventions to curb progression. Childhood obesity is on the rise in low/middle-income countries, but cause-specific mortality data associated with liver disease are scanty. Establishing the prevalence of NAFLD in overweight and obese Kenyan children would guide in public health policies aimed at early screening and intervention.
Objectives To investigate prevalence of NAFLD in overweight and obese children aged 6–18 years using liver ultrasonography.
Methodology This was a cross-sectional …

Land-applied municipal biosolids, produced from municipal wastewater treatment sludge, contributes to microplastics contamination in agroecosystems. The impacts of biosolids on microplastic concentrations in agricultural soil have been previously investigated, however, the potential for microplastics transport from biosolid-amended croplands has not been previously quantified. In this study, manure and biosolids were applied to field plots, runoff was collected following natural precipitation events and the potential of bacterial biofilm to grow on different microplastic morphologies was investigated. Higher concentrations of microplastics were detected in runoff from plots with land-applied biosolid in comparison with manure-amended and control plots. Fibers and fragments were the …

Doctor of Ministry
My NPO (The lack of understanding and framework of Biblical leadership as entrustment rather than an entitlement that empowers both genders to lead together has created a lack of female representation in strategic influence and leadership roles) was birthed out of my experience as a female in ministry for four decades leading with men, coupled with the lack of resources available to an upcoming generation of leaders. Through extensive research and interviews, the most viable solution that emerged was a published book written to empower a new generation of female leaders—one that addresses the theology of women in leadership with …

Spiritual Care The Needs Of The Dying, Carmen Kampman
Doctor of Ministry
As an ordained minister within the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC), I regularly provide spiritual care to dying persons and their families. While writing this preface, four residents in the long-term care home where I serve died. There was a ministry season when I felt unequipped to provide spiritual care to dying persons and their families. So, motivated by a gap in my pastoral training and the fear of death I witnessed in my first hospice patient - and several others since then - an opportunity to change that began to emerge. Even Jesus needed people to be with him …
Negligent Commercial Transactions: Does New Mexico Face A Slippery Slope After Morris?, Annika Cleveland
Negligent Commercial Transactions: Does New Mexico Face A Slippery Slope After Morris?, Annika Cleveland
New Mexico Law Review
In its July 2021 decision, Morris v. Giant Four Corners, the New Mexico Supreme Court held that the doctrine of negligent entrustment includes liability for someone who supplies gasoline to a person they knew or should have known was intoxicated. While the Morris court’s decision is novel in New Mexico, courts will likely interpret the inclusion narrowly, restricting the duty to circumstances where a commercial transaction enabled a DWI. By reviewing the decisions of other jurisdictions to include certain commercial transactions under negligent entrustment claims and the impact those decisions had on subsequent litigation, this article argues that Morris will …
