Soldiers Of Christ In A Pluralistic Army, Jordan Lee Pittman Feb 2023

Soldiers Of Christ In A Pluralistic Army, Jordan Lee Pittman

Masters Theses

This thesis seeks to answer the question: How does a Christian chaplain in the U.S. Army fulfill the Great Commission given by Jesus in Scripture while facilitating the free exercise of religion for everyone in his organization? Jesus commands his followers to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20). The primary audience of this thesis consists of military chaplains and candidates. The conclusion reached is that the chaplain can accomplish both tasks stated in the question. To facilitate a soldier’s free exercise of religion does not automatically betray the teachings and guidance of Scripture nor does it prevent the chaplain from making disciples. …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused enormous societal upheaval globally. In the US, beyond the devastating toll on life and health, it triggered an economic shock unseen since the great depression and laid bare preexisting societal inequities. The full impacts of these personal, social, economic, and public-health challenges will not be known for years. To minimize societal costs and ensure future preparedness, it is critical to record the psychological and social experiences of individuals during such periods of high societal volatility. Here, we introduce, describe, and assess the COVID-Dynamic dataset, a within-participant longitudinal study conducted from April 2020 through January 2021, …

BACKGROUND: FOXO3, a member of the FOX transcription factor family, is frequently described as being deregulated in cancer. Additionally, notable role of FOXO3 can be easily recognized in the process of ageing and survival. Even though various studies have been done to acknowledge the tumour-suppressive or oncogenic role of FOXO3 in cancer, still there exist a lack of understanding in terms of cancer prognosis and treatment. Therefore, to provide better insight, our study aims to evaluate the role and function of FOXO3 in breast cancer in Indian female patients. We examined the FOXO3 expression levels in breast cancer samples by …

Unmasking The Imposter Phenomenon On A Global Level: A Study Exploring Professional Identity Formation In Health Professional Students, Rebecca Hohsfield, Samantha Dewees, Cameron S. Crandall, Amy Clithero-Eridon

HSC Education Days

Imposter phenomenon (IP) is characterized by high achieving individuals experiencing “chronic feelings of self-doubt, the fear of being discovered as an intellectual fraud, and a perception of being less intelligent or competent than peers.” There is limited data on the implications of IP including how feelings of imposterism may affect aspects of one’s mental health. In the current climate of health worker burnout, it is important to consider factors that may predispose individuals pursuing a career in healthcare to mental and emotional disengagement. We investigated the prevalence of IP among students in various healthcare fields on a global scale and …

Rogers, Ann Morrison

HSC Education Days

The LGBTQ+ community experiences unique health needs that many healthcare providers do not possess adequate training to address. This critical barrier to promoting the health of the LGBTQ+ population contributes to health disparities and discrimination. This is particularly salient for the transgender population who experience high rates of discrimination and have difficulty accessing gender affirming care (GAC). The World Professional Association for Transgender Health recommends an interprofessional team-based approach to providing GAC to gender diverse patients. Unfortunately, the siloed approach to training healthcare providers in their respective fields stifles interprofessional collaborative learning and hinders this necessary team-based approach to caring …

Hear To Help! Using An Innovative Musical Parody Approach, 'Theraoke' In Pmhnp Education, Joellen Schimmels

HSC Education Days

Engaging learners can be challenging. Working memory is not very efficient and finding novel, unique, and distinctive ways of appealing to mental health work is important for nursing practice. Improving care in an enjoyable and effective manner is greatly needed. Theraoke serves as a useful tool to engage learners and patients through music and spoken word. Using the instrumental versions of popular songs to create new “lyrics” helps present knowledge in a useful and emotional way for interactive engagement and learning. Using this technique to engage learners has many positive outcomes including engaging the brain in areas involved with attention, …

Mental Status Exam: Nuts And Bolts, Frames And Mirrors Teaching The Mental Status Exam To First-Year Psychiatry Residents With Cultural Humility, Wayles Haynes, Olivia Shadid, Travis Campbell

HSC Education Days

The mental status exam (MSE) is a tool used in psychiatry and behavioral health to create a cross-sectional assessment of the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive status of patients. This tool serves clinicians to understand and communicate a patient’s current psychiatric state but can be problematic when applied without consideration of provider bias or patient identity within the larger system. The inherently subjective nature of the MSE can assessments that perpetuate biases and inequities when providers are unaware of the complex interactions of identity, culture, power, and privilege. One possible solution is to teach learners to identify the dually subjective and …

Responsible Use Of Race In Research Workshop, N Mariam Salas, Martha Carvour Feb 2023

Responsible Use Of Race In Research Workshop, N Mariam Salas, Martha Carvour

HSC Education Days

Background: Clinical outcomes stratified by race have been used to determine guidelines and treatment plans despite evidence that racial data is unreliable at best and misleading at the worst. There is growing evidence that the misrepresentation of race in medical research may cause erroneous racial profiling, an inaccurate attribution of disease outcomes to biological markers while missing the impact of social determinants of health, and worsening of health care disparities. There is also a belief amongst basic scientists that racial inequities do not impact their professional work or environments. Our curriculum seeks to guide basic science researchers to rethink research …

“It’S Natural, We Have No Choice”: Practical Steps For Menstrual Equity In The Library, Varina A. Kosovich, Sally Bowler-Hill Feb 2023

“It’S Natural, We Have No Choice”: Practical Steps For Menstrual Equity In The Library, Varina A. Kosovich, Sally Bowler-Hill

HSC Education Days

In 2021, the UNM Health Science’s Library and Informatics Center formed a Justice, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. In response to an upset student’s feedback about the lack of menstrual products on campus, one of the first actions of the Committee was to set up a free menstrual product program at the library. After initial research about what other libraries and institutions had done, pads, panty liners, and tampons were placed in all library restrooms. Because the library does not yet have gender neutral restrooms and in support of transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming folks, this included both the women’s and …

The Conundrum Of The Struggling Resident: Designing A Curriculum For Successfully Passing A High Stakes Exam, Jennifer Dillow, Rebecca Gerlach, Davit Kocharyn, Bradley Graustein, Eli Torgeson

HSC Education Days

One of the biggest challenges for a program director is the adult learner who struggles with standardized testing and therefore, although they may be an excellent clinician, cannot advance in residency or become board certified. During anesthesiology residency, all residents take a standardized exam (The Basic Exam) during their second year which 15% of all residents fail and passing is required to continue to advance in residency – quite a conundrum. We developed a standardized curriculum for residents who failed their Basic Exam which involved weekly “teach back” sessions with identified faculty members focusing on missed keywords. The strategies employed …

The 10 Minute Teach: Teaching Faculty How To Be Better Teachers In An Easy, Accessible Format, Jennifer M. Dillow, Eli L. Torgeson

HSC Education Days

Not all faculty members are up to date on the most effective teaching techniques and despite the resources available at UNM, faculty often don’t have the time or energy to devote to educating themselves on the topic. As part of the program director team, we saw an opportunity to educate our faculty in an efficient and fun forum and initiated the “Ten Minute Teach” every month at our faculty meetings. Each month, a new and easily applicable teaching topic is taught to the entire Anesthesiology faculty via the faculty meeting, allowing more expert educators to pass on their knowledge to …

Justice, Equity, Diversity, And Inclusion (Jedi): From The Classroom To Serving New Mexico Communities: A Quality Improvement Project, Lisa M. Taylor, Adreanne L. Cordova, Robin A. Gatlin, Delsie Morrison, Lisa M. Acuff

HSC Education Days

Background/Introduction: Our faculty have identified gaps in our curriculum related to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI), which is important as this aligns with our CON values, including respect, integrity, diversity, and inclusion. With use of in-house grant funds, JEDI Paw was born to begin a community of practice. There are four major approaches described in the literature for working with racial bias in educational settings and JEDI Paw will address the first two: 1) raising awareness of how implicit biases influence health outcomes and how we counter these in ourselves; 2), engaging empathy and understanding through a broad holistic …

Black Women’S Body Image, Breast Cancer, And Post Traumatic Growth, Harriette Richard, Antonia S. Mead

The Journal of the Research Association of Minority Professors

Black women’s body image is influenced by several factors but when women have breast cancer, a “new normal” extends from diagnosis to long after reconstruction. This pilot study examines Black women’s breast cancer experience beginning with social networks, diagnosis, health care, the medical community, and breast reconstruction, ending with PTSD and Post Traumatic Growth (PTG). A convenience sample was surveyed and a qualitative research methodology was utilized to analyze responses from Black female breast cancer survivors. Research questions included body image perceptions after surgery and post-reconstruction. The participants go through adversity, find strength, and grow, ready to face the next …

Police Demographics And Stress Relief Program Utilization, Michael Wayne Whittington Feb 2023

Police Demographics And Stress Relief Program Utilization, Michael Wayne Whittington

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Police officers face challenges from operational and organizational stressors. Officers often have access to stress relief programs offered by their employers such as Peer Support Programs, Employee Assistance Programs, or Chaplaincy Programs. The implementation of these stress relief programs is based on the perception of need and anecdotal evidence. Police stress and stress relief studies offer mixed results as to the way an officer chooses one program or another. One understudied area to determine stress relief program utilization is demographics. Variables such as experience, education, marital status, race, sexuality, and gender may factor into the decision as to which stress …

Attracting And Sustaining Volunteers: Leadership Impact On The Recruitment And Retention Of Volunteers In Nonprofit Organizations, And Differences Observed When Organizations Are Predicated On Faith, Lascel A. Webley Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The term “volunteer” has been formally acknowledged for more than 200 years (Dreyfus, 2018; Haski-Leventhal et al., 2018). It is synonymous with one who freely offers to participate in a task that benefits others. During the modern era, these tasks have included, but have not been limited to, establishing communal programs, presenting technical assistance, conducting conferences, fundraising, and supporting identified causes or groups (Alfes et al., 2017). In most instances, the tasks are rendered through nonprofit organizations. Therefore, volunteers represent invaluable assets as they are economic resources who contribute to accomplishing stated organizational goals (Tonurist & Surva, 2017). While more …

The 2015 Migrant Crisis: An Impact To Germany?, Irish Nicole Solinsky Feb 2023

The 2015 Migrant Crisis: An Impact To Germany?, Irish Nicole Solinsky

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The 2015 European Migrant Crisis emerged when an influx of refugees settled in Europe from 2015-2019. The asylum seekers fled their homelands to evade a myriad of crises such as violence and war, corruption and abuse, and poor socioeconomic conditions. Of the European states, Germany welcomed the largest number of migrants. This was in part due to Germany’s existing immigration policies in a post-Second World War environment, but also due to Germany’s resounding economic strength. Germany has significantly low unemployment rates and the highest gross domestic product (GDP) in Europe. As such, Germany’s position is one of uncontested significance within …

Binding Peptide Generation For Mhc Class I Proteins With Deep Reinforcement Learning, Ziqi Chen, Baoyi Zhang, Hongyu Guo, Prashant Emani, Trevor Clancy, Chongming Jiang, Mark Gerstein, Xia Ning, Chao Cheng, Martin Renqiang Min

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Motivation: MHC Class I protein plays an important role in immunotherapy by presenting immunogenic peptides to anti-tumor immune cells. The repertoires of peptides for various MHC Class I proteins are distinct, which can be reflected by their diverse binding motifs. To characterize binding motifs for MHC Class I proteins, in vitro experiments have been conducted to screen peptides with high binding affinities to hundreds of given MHC Class I proteins. However, considering tens of thousands of known MHC Class I proteins, conducting in vitro experiments for extensive MHC proteins is infeasible, and thus a more efficient and scalable way to …
