Covid Stress, Anonymous Feb 2023

Covid Stress, Anonymous

Community Reflections

My COVID-19 experience was definitely something that I will never forget. At the time with me working in the healthcare field, being a CNA. It brought much stress and especially chaos. After coming home from long shifts helping with elderly patients who were sickened by covid, it definitely was hard to see and it took a toll on me.

Covid Pandemic Reflection, Anonymous

Community Reflections

At first feelings of shock, confusion and disappointment started flooding my mind, but over'me as more and more media coverage on the virus surfaced this original two week shut down became a much more serious and scary reality. At first so called “zoom school” didn’t seem so bad, but then the crushing realiza'on of not being able to go out, see friends or even show our faces without a mask quickly came over me.

Community Reflections

If you asked the 7.8 billion people who were alive during covid about their experience during isolation, you would hear 7.8 billion different stories because every single person experienced something new . Everyone was subject to their own homes and had to deal with whatever their family situation was like. For me personally, my family was pretty fortunate to have no deaths due to covid, however, the rollercoaster of emotions that the time period had put us all on is indescribable.

Myostatin: A Skeletal Muscle Chalone., Se-Jin Lee Feb 2023

Myostatin: A Skeletal Muscle Chalone., Se-Jin Lee

Faculty Research 2023

Myostatin (GDF-8) was discovered 25 years ago as a new transforming growth factor-β family member that acts as a master regulator of skeletal muscle mass. Myostatin is made by skeletal myofibers, circulates in the blood, and acts back on myofibers to limit growth. Myostatin appears to have all of the salient properties of a chalone, which is a term proposed over a half century ago to describe hypothetical circulating, tissue-specific growth inhibitors that control tissue size. The elucidation of the molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms underlying myostatin activity suggests that myostatin functions as a negative feedback regulator of muscle mass …

SARS-CoV-2, a novel betacoronavirus strain, has caused a pandemic that has claimed the lives of nearly 6.7M people worldwide. Vaccines and medicines are being developed around the world to reduce the disease spread, fatality rates, and control the new variants. Understanding the protein-protein interaction mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 in humans, and their comparison with the previous SARS-CoV and MERS strains, is crucial for these efforts. These interactions might be used to assess vaccination effectiveness, diagnose exposure, and produce effective biotherapeutics. Here, we present the HuCoPIA database, which contains approximately 100,000 protein-protein interactions between humans and three strains (SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, and MERS) …

Right before COVID, my mother was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer, and needed to undergo chemotherapy while quarantining at home. During quarantine, people’s stories were that they stayed inside all day and did nothing, but for me, it was the complete opposite. My mom was very sick and weak, which meant that me and my sisters needed to step up.

Good Governance: The Path To Development, Eduardo Landaeta Feb 2023

Good Governance: The Path To Development, Eduardo Landaeta

Graduate Research Conference (GSIS)

This paper aims to understand to what extent good governance and effective public policies are aligned in the economic growth of a country. International assistance relies on political-economic analysis to evaluate the donations they can provide to a country. In this regard, good governance of domestic institutions is essential for the efficiency of a country, especially in affiliation with foreign aid. Therefore, a relationship avoiding dependency should be the focus in the short or medium-term.

Never Tell Me The Odds: How To Avoid Infringement When Alluding To Copyrighted Works In Branding, Paul M. Matenaer Feb 2023

Never Tell Me The Odds: How To Avoid Infringement When Alluding To Copyrighted Works In Branding, Paul M. Matenaer

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

Alluding to copyrighted works in branding is common, especially among small businesses that tend to fly under the radar of the large corporations which own those copyrights. The craft beer industry, for example, is fond of such allusions, incorporating references to movies, comic books, and video games in product names and beer labels. Whether to pay homage to the creative genius found in those copyrighted works or to cash in on popular enthusiasm for them, brand allusions to copyrighted works are common. However, such homages to copyrighted works can be as dangerous as flying into an asteroid field because they …

Photoprotection For People With Skin Of Colour: Needs And Strategies, Jean Krutmann, Jaime Piquero-Casals, Daniel Morgado-Carrasco, Corinne Granger, Carles Trullàs, Thierry Passeron, Henry W. Lim

Dermatology Articles

Skin of colour or pigmented skin has unique characteristics: it has a higher eumelanin-to-pheomelanin ratio, more mature melanosomes, an increased amount of melanin distributed in the upper layers of the epidermis, and more efficient DNA repair compared with lighter skin. However, individuals with skin of colour are at a significant risk of skin damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, including the development of photodermatoses and photoageing changes such as uneven skin tone, and are predisposed to pigmentary disorders. In fact, one of the most common conditions leading to dermatology consultations by patients with skin of colour is photoexacerbated pigmentary disorders. Unfortunately, …

Digital Citizenship: A Journey To Internet Safety, Lynn Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Students need academic tools and digital skills for proper social interactions in a digital society. Researchers Ribble and Park (2019) designed the S3 Framework which stresses the importance of developing safe, savvy, and social digital citizens. Using this framework, a series of interventions were developed for students and staff to increase the demonstration of appropriate digital literacy skills and digital citizenship. This mixed-methods study provided the opportunity for 6th-grade students to receive an additional intervention for internet safety, along with students and teachers sharing their knowledge and understanding of being safe, savvy, and social digital citizens. The goals of the …

The “Newest ‘Yellow Peril’”: How American Legal History Shaped The Rise In Asian American Hate Crimes In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Adam Minoru Yasui Estacio

Denver Law Review

The perpetual foreigner stereotype is the misconception that people of Asian descent are inescapably foreign and never truly “American.” This stereotype has plagued Asian Americans since the first Asian immigrants arrived in America and it continues to negatively impact Asian Americans today, regardless of the years, or even generations, that they have lived in the United States. This Comment first breaks down the perpetual foreigner stereotype into three “pillars”: First, Asian Americans, despite their best efforts to assimilate, are irreducibly foreign and therefore are unentitled to the rights and protections guaranteed to American citizens. Second, because they are unentitled to …

Metabolically labile prodrugs can experience stark differences in catabolism incurred by the chosen route of administration. This is especially true for phosph(on)ate prodrugs, in which successive promoiety removal transforms a lipophilic molecule into increasingly polar compounds. We previously described a phosphonate inhibitor of enolase (HEX) and its bis-pivaloyloxymethyl ester prodrug (POMHEX) capable of eliciting strong tumor regression in a murine model of enolase 1 (ENO1)-deleted glioblastoma following parenteral administration. Here, we characterize the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of these enolase inhibitors in vitro and in vivo after oral and parenteral administration. In support of the historical function of lipophilic …

Digital Flourishing: Conceptualizing And Assessing Positive Perceptions Of Mediated Social Interactions, Sophie H. Janicke-Bowles, Tess M. Buckley, Rikishi T. Rey, Tayah Renea Wozniak, Adrian Meier, Anna Lomanowska

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

Recent research started to apply concepts of well-being to the context of computer mediated communication (e.g., social media, instant messaging). While much research investigates negative perceptions of mediated social interactions (e.g., “problematic” or “addictive” social media use), a multi-dimensional measure that taps into users? positive perceptions is sorely lacking. The present research therefore develops the first comprehensive measure of digital flourishing, defined as positive perceptions of mediated social interactions. Building on a qualitative pre-study that aided the construction of the Digital Flourishing Scale (DFS), Study 1 (N = 474) employed exploratory factor analysis to reveal five subdimensions of …
