Journal Of Dairy Science® 2022 Editorial Report, Paul J. Kononoff Feb 2023

Journal Of Dairy Science® 2022 Editorial Report, Paul J. Kononoff

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

In 2022, the 105th volume of the Journal of Dairy Science was published. As we review the journal’s last year, it may be useful to reflect on the purpose of scientific publishing. This can be simply stated as the dissemination of results that extends knowledge to open the door for new concepts or advances in the field (Chan, 2018). Similar to other journals, in addition to original research articles, Journal of Dairy Science also publishes invited reviews and other paper types to pursue this purpose. The journal also has other valuable roles. For example, scientific journals actively support authors in …

RNA interference (RNAi) has drawn enormous attention as a powerful tool because of its capability to interfere with mRNA and protein production. However, designing a safe and efficient delivery system in RNAi therapeutics remains challenging. Herein, we have designed and synthesized several linear peptides containing tryptophan (W) and arginine (R) residues separated by the β-alanine (βA) spacer and attached to a lipophilic fatty acyl chain, cholesterol, or PEG. The peptide backbone sequences were: Ac-C-βA-βA-W4-βA-βA-R4-CO-NH2 and Ac-K-βA-βA-W4-βA-βA-R4-CO-NH2, with only a difference in N-terminal amino acid. The cysteine side chain in the first sequence was used for the conjugation with PEG2000 and …

Transportation Safety Culture: Where We Are And What It Means, Tara Beth Goddard

PSU Transportation Seminars

Like any healthy professional community, the transportation safety community is not homogenous or without constructive conflict. The increased attention on systems thinking – most commonly known, if not necessarily well understood, under the “Vision Zero” approach – has sparked debate among engineers, planners, academics, public health professionals, advocates, and others about where our attention should be focused to reduce the epidemic of traffic violence. The built environment? Drivers? Engineers and planners? Car culture? What IS car culture? Dr. Goddard brings together her research conducted with colleagues on police crash reporting processes, NHTSA crash investigations, attitudes and effects of the language …

The Silent Suffering Of Survivors: The Covid-19 Pandemic's Impact On Domestic Violence Resources, Osoniya I. Wodi

XULAneXUS

Increased reports of domestic violence has coincided with the eruptions and growth of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous research has shown a positive correlation between domestic violence and the occurrence of humanitarian crises. Recently published research about domestic violence police reports in the COVID-19 pandemic has also supported this correlation. We used data from the National Network To End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) to analyze the number of survivors served by domestic violence programs in the United States, type of resources available, and unmet request from 2019-2021, one year pre-pandemic and the first two years of the pandemic. Findings from this study …

Cardiology Articles

Background and Objectives: Cardiac amyloidosis is a disorder caused by amyloid fibril deposition in the extracellular space of the heart. Almost all forms of clinical cardiac amyloidosis are transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) or light chain amyloidosis. (99m) technetium pyrophosphate ((99m)Tc PYP scan) has changed the landscape of the non-biopsy diagnosis of ATTR cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) by providing remarkably high diagnostic accuracy. We examined our experience with PYP scans in patients undergoing workup for ATTR-CA and evaluated the diagnostic workflow in patients with intermediate PYP scan results.

Materials and Methods: Retrospective chart review study in which we analyzed data of 84 patients …

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

An individual’s ability to balance the identity of self with the identity of the other, Quiet Ego, consider situations from various perspectives (Reflective Wisdom) and reflect on emotional reactivity (Affective Wisdom) are influential components to engaging in dialogue. The context for dialogue within the United States is increasingly impacted by the backdrop of polarization and defensiveness, impacting one’s ability to develop and maintain the characteristics above. The Christian Church in the United States is not immune to the shifts in dialogue and are experiencing similar difficulties with dialogue seen in the broader society. Russell body esophagitis/gastritis (RBG) is a rare gastrointestinal inflammatory condition characterized by accumulation of plasma cells containing dense eosinophilic cytoplasmic inclusions, i.e., Russell bodies. Herein, we report a case of RBG in a patient with a systemic inflammation background. A 61-year-old female presented with oral infection. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed patchy salmon-colored esophageal mucosa proximally to the gastroesophageal junction, suggestive of “Barrett’s esophagus”. Histologic examination of the biopsy tissue from the lower esophagus showed diffuse lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with abundant admixed enlarged plasma cells (Mott cells) containing bright eosinophilic, round, dense, homogenous inclusions (Russell bodies) in cytoplasm. Immunohistochemical study demonstrated membranous …

Attention-Based Explainability Approaches In Healthcare Natural Language Processing, Haadia Amjad, Mohammad Ashraf, Syed Sherazi, Saad Khan, Muhammad Moazam Fraz, Tahir Hameed, Syed Ahmad Chan Bukhari

Management Faculty Publications

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are becoming common for decision support. However, the prevalence of the black-box approach in developing AI systems has been raised as a significant concern. It becomes very crucial to understand how an AI system makes decisions, especially in healthcare, since it directly impacts human life. Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) frequently use Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to extract information from textual data including Electronic Health Records (EHRs). In contrast to the prevalent black box approaches, emerging ’Explainability’ research has improved our comprehension of the decision-making processes in CDSS using EHR data. Many researches use ’attention’ …

Profibrotic Behavior Of Fibroblasts Derived From Patients That Develop Posttraumatic Shoulder Stiffness, Benjamin A. Hendy, Jolanta Fertala, Thema Nicholson, Joseph A. Abboud, Surena Namdari, Andrzej Fertala

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Arthrofibrosis is a severe scarring condition characterized by joint stiffness and pain. Fundamental to developing arthrofibrotic scars is the accelerated production of procollagen I, a precursor of collagen I molecules that form fibrotic deposits in affected joints. The procollagen I production mechanism comprises numerous elements, including enzymes, protein chaperones, and growth factors. This study aimed to elucidate the differences in the production of vital elements of this mechanism in surgical patients who developed significant posttraumatic arthrofibrosis and those who did not.

METHODS: We studied a group of patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopic repair of the rotator cuff. …

Quitting Smoking After A Cancer Diagnosis Is Associated With High-Risk Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratio Among Tobacco Use-Related Cancer Survivors, You Lu, Katherine Kwong, James Wells, Andrea Edwards, Zhong Chen, Tung-Sung Tseng, Kun Zhang Feb 2023

Quitting Smoking After A Cancer Diagnosis Is Associated With High-Risk Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratio Among Tobacco Use-Related Cancer Survivors, You Lu, Katherine Kwong, James Wells, Andrea Edwards, Zhong Chen, Tung-Sung Tseng, Kun Zhang

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

Quitting smoking could potentially minimize the risk of a high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) among tobacco use-related (TUR) cancer survivors. A total of 1263 TUR cancer survivors aged 20 to 85 years old were investigated using data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 1999-2018. The primary outcome was the NLR, which was defined as having two levels: high-risk (≥ 3) and low-risk (< 3). The association between smoking cessation time and a high-risk NLR level was analyzed using weighted logistic regression models. Overall, the current smoking rate of TUR cancer survivors was found to be 21.7%. Older age (75 years above), gender and respiratory-related cancers are covariables associated with high risk of NLR levels for individual who identified as Non-Hispanic White (NHW). Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) (n = 27) who quit smoking after a cancer diagnosis were associated with the highest risk of a high NLR (OR 4.83, 95% CI 1.40-16.61, p = 0.01) compared to NHB nonsmokers (n = 139). These findings suggest that the risk of a high NLR level is strongly associated with the time of smoking cessation in NHB TUR cancer survivors. As a result, NHB TUR cancer survivors should quit smoking as soon as possible because the benefits of quitting smoking were observed over the 5 year period following smoking cessation.

High Prep Uptake And Objective Longitudinal Adherence Among Hiv-Exposed Women With Personal Or Partner Plans For Pregnancy In Rural Uganda: A Cohort Study, Lynn T. Matthews, Esther Atukunda, Moran Owembabazi, Christina Psaros, David Bangsberg, Multiple Additional Authors

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background

In Uganda, fertility rates and adult HIV prevalence are high, and many women conceive with partners living with HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) reduces HIV acquisition for women and, therefore, infants. We developed the Healthy Families-PrEP intervention to support PrEP use as part of HIV prevention during periconception and pregnancy periods. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study to evaluate oral PrEP use among women participating in the intervention.

Methods and findings

We enrolled HIV–negative women with plans for pregnancy with a partner living, or thought to be living, with HIV (2017 to 2020) to evaluate PrEP use among women participating …
