Challenge-Based Learning & Steam Curriculum, Diana Lockwood
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
STEAM education is being integrated into elementary schools as a way to engage more students in creativity, hands-on learning, and problem-based learning also referred to as Challenge-Based-Learning (CBL). This article focuses on elementary educators’ curriculum design for STEAM and presenting students with open-ended questions phrased as a challenge as a way to raise student interest and achievement (DeJarnette, 2018; Hunter-Doniger, 2018). When students received challenges to solve, they felt more open to sharing their ideas since there was more than one potential right answer (DeJarnette, 2018; Drake, 2012). When implementing CBL, teachers act as facilitators using a constructivist approach as …

Managing healthcare waste (HCWTT) from healthcare facilities is difficult. It's high up on the list of health concerns. This growth in HCWTT has been especially visible in recent years, as the quantity of medical services available has increased. Because of the potential danger, this garbage poses to people and the planet, it must be properly disposed of. Because of ineffective waste management practices, inadequate financial resources, and a lack of adequate facilities, HCWT administration is especially crucial in developing nations. Reducing HCWT via appropriate treatment is important for the area's financial and environmental health. In order to solve single-valued neutrosophic …

Background
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasingly recognized as a stroke risk factor, but its exact relationship with cerebrovascular disease is not well-understood. We investigated the development of cerebral small vessel disease using in vivo and in vitro models of CKD.
Methods
CKD was produced in aged C57BL/6J mice using an adenine-induced tubulointerstitial nephritis model. We analyzed brain histology using Prussian blue staining to examine formation of cerebral microhemorrhage (CMH), the hemorrhagic component of small vessel disease and the neuropathological substrate of MRI-demonstrable cerebral microbleeds. In cell culture studies, we examined effects of serum from healthy or CKD patients and …

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
The distinction between satellite-based land surface temperature (LST) and air temperature has become an increasingly important part of managing urban heat islands. While the preponderance of urban heat research relies on LST, the emergence of a growing infrastructure of publicly available consumer oriented, ground-based sensor networks has offered an alternative for characterizing microscale differences in temperatures. Recent evidence suggests large differences between LST and air temperatures, yet discerning the reason for these differences between satellite-derived measurements of urban heat islands (UHI) and ground-based measurements of air temperature remains largely unresolved. In this study, we draw on an unusually robust and …

Aurora GME
Patient’s belittling comments, inquiries into one’s racial/ethnic origins, credentials and/or abilities are frequent experiences for residents and faculty per published reports across specialties. Even more of us witness these microaggressions: 74%-89% of internal medicine residents witnessed such aggressions within the last year. Cumulatively microaggressions are detrimental to learning, patient care, and well- being; effects compounded for non-white male individuals. To create an optimal clinical learning environment, we all must learn to stand up to microaggressions consistent with the 2022 AAMC DE&I equity competencies! Participants will experience a proven interactive, small group upstander workshop for patient-initiated microaggressions framed using Robert Livingston’s PRESS …

The United Nations projects that one in every six people will be over the age of 65 by the year 2050. With a rapidly aging population, the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) becomes a major concern. AD is a multifactorial disease that involves neurodegeneration in the brain with mild dementia and deficits in memory and other cognitive domains. Additionally, it has been established that individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) experience a 5 to 10-year accelerated aging and an increased risk of developing HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Despite a significant amount of clinical evidence pointing towards a potential overlap between …

Soot formation in combustion is an important process that affects radiative heat transfer, flame temperatures, and emissions with health and environmental impacts. Soot formation involves complex chemistry for nucleation, growth, oxidation, and coagulation processes. The soot particles vary widely in size and accurate modeling requires representation of the particle size distribution (PSD). Modeling soot is not trivial, and is only one of several physical processes active in combustion systems. This paper presents a software package called SootLib, which is an open-source library for modeling soot formation and other aerosol systems. SootLib is written in C++, is documented with Doxygen, and …

Research in the field of psychopharmacology is ongoing to develop novel compounds which can revolutionize the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The concept of bench-to-bedside is a tedious process, transforming the initial research performed in the laboratories into novel treatment options. Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a chronic psychiatric illness with significant morbidity and mortality. SCZ not only presents with psychotic symptoms including hallucinations and delusions but also with negative and cognitive symptoms. The negative symptoms include the diminished ability to express emotions, loss of pleasure, and motivation with minimal social interactions. Conventional antipsychotics primarily target positive symptoms with minimal therapeutic benefits for …

Background
In patients with acute ischemic stroke, minimizing the time to revascularization can minimize neuronal death. First‐pass effect (FPE), defined as successful or complete revascularization of an occluded target vessel with 1 pass of a mechanical thrombectomy device(s), reduces the time to revascularization. The objective of this study was to determine the FPE rate, compare cases in which FPE was versus was not achieved, and determine predictors of good functional outcome at 90 days, in patients with large‐vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke treated with the Penumbra System (Penumbra, Inc).

Tandem pore domain (K2P) potassium channels modulate resting membrane potentials and shape cellular excitability. For the mechanosensitive subfamily of K2Ps, the composition of phospholipids within the bilayer strongly influences channel activity. To examine the molecular details of K2P lipid modulation, we solved cryo-EM structures of the TREK1 K2P channel bound to either the anionic lipid phosphatidic acid (PA) or the zwitterionic lipid phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). At the extracellular face of TREK1, a PA lipid inserts its hydrocarbon tail into a pocket behind the selectivity filter, causing a structural rearrangement that recapitulates mutations and pharmacology known to activate TREK1. At the cytoplasmic …

Sand Tray Therapy as an intervention method in School Counseling
Sand tray therapy can be defined as a type of play therapy which has roots in various counseling approaches including Jungian and Humanistic orientations. It has been identified as a dynamic form of expressive psychotherapy where the client can express their intra and interpersonal world and issues using the creative process to communicate them (Homeyer and Sweeny, 2011).
As expressive art therapy has expanded from the therapeutic setting into other environments sand tray has become more accepted and more utilized as a school counseling intervention, particularly in the areas of …

Methods For Extracting Wildfire Specific Pm2.5 For The Western United States, Ava Orr
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Air pollution and PM2.5 from wildfire smoke have steadily increased over the last decade despite decreasing anthropogenic emissions. The increase in wildfires in the western US has highlighted the need to understand better how wildfire-specific PM2.5 affects human health. To support health risk assessment studies from wildfire smoke inhalation, differentiating between wildfire-specific PM2.5 and non-wildfire-specific PM2.5 is essential. We used PM2.5 data developed by Swanson et al. and three different methods to isolate wildfire-specific PM2.5. The PM2.5 data uses air quality station observations, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, aerosol optical thickness data, and …

This project sought to understand the struggles currently faced with the repatriation of human remains using the United States and NAGPRA as the basis for understanding the cultural conflicts associated with the process. The use of DNA in repatriation is a widely discussed and argued topic in bioarcheology today and the ethical ambiguity is a contentious matter for government institutions, tribal authorities, cultural managers, and communities throughout the world. To some cultures the use of DNA analysis, which by design are invasive procedure, is a further invasion that goes against their cultural foundations. Excluding the views of the collection of …
Identity And Performance Anxiety In Classical Singing: A Counseling Perspective, Jadd D. Davis
Identity And Performance Anxiety In Classical Singing: A Counseling Perspective, Jadd D. Davis
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
In this practical research, I propose that performance anxiety in classical singing is more than simply “stage fright”, but a mental health concern directly tied to perceived identity. Classical singers, for whom professional preparation is lengthy and rigorous, are often referred to solely as their function in the fabric of a performance. For example, a soloist in oratorio or opera is simply seen as “the tenor”. This limiting of the totality of human embodiment weds performance outcomes with sense of self. The singer’s positive or negative perception of identity hinges upon a subjective measurement of success. The rigor of classical …
