Viruses have brought humanity many challenges: respiratory infection, cancer, neurological impairment and immunosuppression to name a few. Virology research over the last 60+ years has responded to reduce this disease burden with vaccines and antivirals. Despite this long history, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented attention to the field of virology. Some of this attention is focused on concern about the safe conduct of research with human pathogens. A small but vocal group of individuals has seized upon these concerns - conflating legitimate questions about safely conducting virus-related research with uncertainties over the origins of SARS-CoV-2. The result has fueled …

Demographic Data Associated With Digital Inequity Reported In Patient-To-Provider Teledermatology Studies In The United States From 2011 To 2021: Scoping Review, John Miller, Patrick Ioffreda, Shannon Nugent, Elizabeth Jones
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Background: Patient-to-provider teledermatology relies on a patient’s access to technology to ensure a successful visit. However, access to broadband internet and technology varies across populations in the United States—leading to the digital divide. While teledermatology has been recognized as a model to improve access, little is known about how often demographic data associated with digital inequity are captured in studies. Objective: Given the expansion of teledermatology over the past decade, we sought to determine how often demographic data associated with digital inequity are reported in patient-to-provider teledermatology studies. Methods: A scoping literature review search was conducted using the search term …

Consumer Taste Beliefs Impact Organic Specialty Baked Good Pricing, Tatiana Drugova, Kynda R. Curtis
All Current Publications
In this fact sheet, we discuss how consumer taste beliefs related to organic specialty baked goods differ from their taste beliefs for conventional specialty baked goods, and whether this difference affects the amount consumers are willing to pay for organic-labeled specialty baked goods. In other words, we examine how an organic label on baked goods affects taste perceptions and willingness to pay (WTP). Further, we examine whether providing information about organic labeling standards changes consumer taste beliefs and impacts WTP for organic baked goods. Finally, we examine the impact of providing taste information to mimic scenarios where respondents know the …

Who Values Organic Specialty Bakery Products?, Tatiana Drugova, Kynda R. Curtis
All Current Publications
In this fact sheet, we examine differences in socio-demographics and lifestyle choices between those who view organic as important when purchasing specialty bakery products and those who don’t, with the aim to identify a target market of consumers who prefer organic specialty bakery products. Additionally, we evaluate other important product attributes to consumers seeking organic specialty bakery products. Consumer taste ratings for organic and conventional specialty bakery products are compared for those who value organics and those who don’t to evaluate the impact of taste beliefs on consumer demand for organic specialty bakery products.
Medical Student Perceptions Of Autism Education: A Qualitative Study, L Gallaher, C Butler, S Banerjee, Et Al
Medical Student Perceptions Of Autism Education: A Qualitative Study, L Gallaher, C Butler, S Banerjee, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Background: The global prevalence of autism is reported to be at least 1% and is rising. Autistic people have a range of comorbidities resulting in a high use of health services. Doctors of nearly all specialties are likely to encounter autistic people in their practice. Autistic people report dissatisfactory care and encounter disproportionately worse health-related outcomes than non-autistic people, which in part has been attributed to a lack of skill and awareness in the medical workforce. At present, autism education is not always included in undergraduate medical curricula. In England, the Department of Health and Social Care has mandated that …

Initial Development Of A Patient-Reported Experience Measure For Older Adults Attending The Emergency Department: Part Ii—Focus Groups With Professional Caregivers, Blair Graham, Jason E. Smith, Pam Nelmes, Rosalyn Squire, Jos M. Latour
Peninsula Medical School
A wide range of healthcare professionals provide care for patients in the emergency department (ED). This study forms part of a wider exploration of the determinants of patient experience for older adults in the ED, to assist the development of a new patient-reported experience measure (PREM). Inter-professional focus groups aimed to build on findings from earlier interviews with patients conducted in the ED, by exploring professional perspectives on caring for older people in this setting. A total of thirty-seven clinicians, comprising nurses, physicians and support staff, participated in seven focus groups across three EDs in the United Kingdom (UK). The …

Initial Development Of A Patient Reported Experience Measure For Older Adults Attending The Emergency Department: Part I—Interviews With Service Users, Blair Graham, Jason E. Smith, Pam Nelmes, Rosalyn Squire, Jos M. Latour
Peninsula Medical School
Older adults are a major Emergency Department (ED) user group who may be especially vulnerable to the consequences of crowding and sub-optimal care. Patient experience is a critical component of high-quality ED care and has previously been conceptualised using a framework focusing on patients’ needs. This study aimed to explore the experiences of older adults attending the ED in relation to the existing needs-based framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted during an emergency care episode with 24 participants aged over 65 years in a United Kingdom ED with an annual census ~100,000. Questions exploring patient experiences of care confirmed that meeting …

If inclusion denotes ongoing efforts to remove barriers to authentic participation for all, then systemic exclusionary pressures and localised exclusionary practices must be acknowledged. These may vary according to national context, but two common features are evident. Firstly, the routine nature or “everydayness” of exclusion in education systems and cultures globally and secondly, the disproportionate exclusion of specific demographic groups. This state of affairs may reflect historical inequities but, today, it indicates the power of neoliberal policies and discourses to transform education. Neoliberalising processes rely on competition between nations and between individuals, and are thus inherently exclusionary. States act to …

Spectral Sensitivity Near Exceptional Points As A Resource For Hardware Encryption, Minye Yang, Liang Zhu, Qi Zhong, Ramy El-Ganainy, Pai Yen Chen
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The spectral sensitivity near exceptional points (EPs) has been recently explored as an avenue for building sensors with enhanced sensitivity. However, to date, it is not clear whether this class of sensors does indeed outperform traditional sensors in terms of signal-to-noise ratio. In this work, we investigate the spectral sensitivity associated with EPs under a different lens and propose to utilize it as a resource for hardware security. In particular, we introduce a physically unclonable function (PUF) based on analogue electronic circuits that benefit from the drastic eigenvalues bifurcation near a divergent exceptional point to enhance the stochastic entropy caused …

Cryptosporidium parvum is an enteric pathogen that invades epithelial cells in the intestine, where it resides at the apical surface in a unique epicellular location. Compared with those of related apicomplexan parasites, the processes of host cell attachment and invasion by C. parvum are poorly understood. The streamlined C. parvum genome contains numerous mucin-like glycoproteins, several of which have previously been shown to mediate cell attachment, although the majority are unstudied. Here, we identified the antigens recognized by monoclonal antibody (MAb) 1A5, which stains the apical end of sporozoites and mature merozoites. Immunoprecipitation with MAb 1A5 followed by mass spectrometry …

Rotaviruses (RVs) preferentially replicate in the small intestine and frequently cause severe diarrheal disease, and the following enteric infection generally induces variable levels of protective systemic and mucosal immune responses in humans and other animals. Rhesus rotavirus (RRV) is a simian RV that was previously used as a human RV vaccine and has been extensively studied in mice. Although RRV replicates poorly in the suckling mouse intestine, infection induces a robust and protective antibody response. The recent availability of plasmid only-based RV reverse genetics systems has enabled the generation of recombinant RVs expressing foreign proteins. However, recombinant RVs have not …

To disseminate through the body, Zika virus (ZIKV) is thought to exploit the mobility of myeloid cells, in particular monocytes and dendritic cells. However, the timing and mechanisms underlying shuttling of the virus by immune cells remains unclear. To understand the early steps in ZIKV transit from the skin, at different time points, we spatially mapped ZIKV infection in lymph nodes (LNs), an intermediary site en route to the blood. Contrary to prevailing hypotheses, migratory immune cells are not required for the virus to reach the LNs or blood. Instead, ZIKV rapidly infects a subset of sessile CD169

MLL-rearrangements (MLL-r) are recurrent genetic events in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and frequently associate with poor prognosis. In infants, MLL-r can be sufficient to drive transformation. However, despite the prenatal origin of MLL-r in these patients, congenital leukemia is very rare with transformation usually occurring postnatally. The influence of prenatal signals on leukemogenesis, such as those mediated by the fetal-specific protein LIN28B, remains controversial. Here, using a dual-transgenic mouse model that co-expresses MLL-ENL and LIN28B, we investigate the impact of LIN28B on AML. LIN28B impedes the progression of MLL-r AML through compromised leukemia-initiating cell activity and suppression of MYB signaling. …

Missing person investigations involve the collection of information to ensure the person is located as fast as possible, minimising their exposure to harms. Social media is a valuable source of information in police investigations both to learn about the missing person, and to appeal for information to the public. To ensure social media is used safely and effectively, we must understand the concerns and experiences of investigating officers. In this pilot study, we analysed interviews from 8 experts who investigate missing children to identify the facilitators and barriers of using social media. We also identified concerns raised by officers around …

There is an identified need to expand sex-positive clinical supervision guidelines. The supervisory setting is created for the safety and personal-professional growth of the supervisee, where it is an opportunity to conceptualize the thematic development of our clinical evolution. In this space, we set a foundation for clinical frameworks to guide the applicability of specific intervention methods and strategies that allow for the critical formulation of a healthy therapeutic outcome. Without established and robust sex-positive frameworks in supervision, the clinical supervisor …

Abstinence-Only Sex Education In Public Schools: A Special Commentary, Julianna Williams
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
Abstinence Only Until Marriage (AOUM) programs, also known as Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) programs, are non-comprehensive, religion and values-based programs that are still widely used, and supported by government funding, in schools around the United States of America. Content of these programs include messages of misogyny, heteronormativity, and racism, among others. Existing research has indicated that sex education programs lack efficacy in prevention or reduction in teen pregnancy and STI infection. However, little research has investigated the potentially harmful impact of biased messaging to long term sexual and mental health and well-being. In this commentary, I highlight some of the …

Incorporating Sexual Health Content Into The Rehabilitation Counseling Graduate Program Curriculum: A Special Commentary, Kenneth C. Hergenrather, Nichole Tichy, Maureen Mcguire-Kuletz
Journal of Counseling Sexology & Sexual Wellness: Research, Practice, and Education
Sexual health is considered a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being (World Health Organization, 2006). Persons with disabilities are likely to be presumed as sexually inactive, asexual (Rico Alonso et al., 2021; Sant Angelo, 2000), or sexually deviant (Earle, 2001), often leading to their lack of sexual education, an increased risk of sexual exploitation, unwanted pregnancy, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs; Doughty et al., 2017). This commentary addresses three priorities for rehabilitation counseling graduate program curriculum. Clinical priorities should focus on providing persons with disabilities information and education regarding sexual health and wellness. Training priorities should focus on …
