Background: Medical student burnout and anxiety has received growing attention in the past decade. The culture of competition and assessment has resulted in increasing stress levels amongst medical students, causing a decline in their academic performance and overall mental health. The objective of this qualitative analysis was to characterize recommendations from educational experts to aid students’ academic progress. Methods: At an international meeting in 2019, worksheets were completed by medical educators during a panel discussion. Participants responded to four scenarios representing common challenges medical students face in school (eg. Postponing Step 1, failing clerkships, etc.). For each case, participants addressed …

Thc On The Brain: Adult Vs. Adolescent Changes, Addison Smartt, Jeffrey Edwards Phd Mar 2023

Thc On The Brain: Adult Vs. Adolescent Changes, Addison Smartt, Jeffrey Edwards Phd

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2023

Δ9 -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has been demonstrated to cause elimination of cannabinoid 1 receptor (CB1) mediated long term depression (LTD) of GABA neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the brain. Through electrophysiology and quantitative PCR experiments, this study reveals that LTD elimination is more pronounced in adolescents than adults, giving an explanation for the increased risk of THC dependency in adolescence. However, after a seven day withdrawal period, these effects were reversed. The data also supports the hypothesis that removal or desensitization of CB1 receptors from the synapse is an important mechanism of THC-induced neural and cognitive changes.

Functional Annotation Of The Animal Genomes: An Integrated Annotation Resource For The Horse, Sichong Peng, Anna R. Dahlgren, Callum G. Donnelly, Erin N. Hales, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Rebecca R. Bellone, Ted Kalbfleisch, Carrie J. Finno Mar 2023

Functional Annotation Of The Animal Genomes: An Integrated Annotation Resource For The Horse, Sichong Peng, Anna R. Dahlgren, Callum G. Donnelly, Erin N. Hales, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Rebecca R. Bellone, Ted Kalbfleisch, Carrie J. Finno

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The genomic sequence of the horse has been available since 2009, providing critical resources for discovering important genomic variants regarding both animal health and population structures. However, to fully understand the functional implications of these variants, detailed annotation of the horse genome is required. Due to the limited availability of functional data for the equine genome, as well as the technical limitations of short-read RNAseq, existing annotation of the equine genome contains limited information about important aspects of gene regulation, such as alternate isoforms and regulatory elements, which are either not transcribed or transcribed at a very low level. To …

The Fourth Industrial Revolution And Legal Education, Steven R. Smith Mar 2023

The Fourth Industrial Revolution And Legal Education, Steven R. Smith

Georgia State University Law Review

A “Fourth Industrial Revolution” (4IR) will dramatically change current law students’ careers. Innovations in technology, business, and social structures will require different and more sophisticated legal services. Law school graduates will be responsible for harnessing, encouraging, and establishing legal controls that offer society the benefits of these new technologies while limiting the undesirable side effects. At the same time, the recurring, repetitive practice of law will begin to disappear as more work is done much cheaper and better by machines.

The 4IR presents extraordinary opportunities for law schools, the legal profession, and graduates, but it also presents significant challenges. To …

When Does A Non-Fungible Token (Nft) Become A Security?, Brian Elzweig, Lawrence J. Trautman

Georgia State University Law Review

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) gained prominence in the news cycle during March 2021 when $69 million was paid in a cryptocurrency known as Ether for a unique digital art piece titled Everydays: The First 5000 Days. Regulating NFTs is complicated because the technology encompasses varied applications. Therefore, it is the particular use of a given NFT that will determine its appropriate regulatory regime. For example, NFTs may take the form of collectibles, data associated with a physical item, financial instruments, or permanent records associated with a person, such as marriage licenses or property deeds. Just like digital art in the form …

The Lawyer's Duty Of Tech Competence Post-Covid: Why Georgia Needs A New Professional Rule Now—More Than Ever, Julia Webb Mar 2023

The Lawyer's Duty Of Tech Competence Post-Covid: Why Georgia Needs A New Professional Rule Now—More Than Ever, Julia Webb

Georgia State University Law Review

The American Bar Association (ABA) promulgates the Model Rules for Professional Conduct (Model Rules), which prescribe the behavior with which lawyers must comply in demonstrating competency to practice law. In 2012, the ABA updated Comment 8 to Model Rule 1.1 to require maintaining competence in the “benefits and risks associated with relevant technology,” also known as a lawyer’s “duty of technological competence.” A decade later, the majority of state bar associations have adopted and implemented this language. Georgia, however, remains among the last ten states that have not yet formally adopted the duty of technological competence. The COVID-19 pandemic forced …

A Square Double Helix In A Round Hole: Forensic Genetic Genealogy Searches And The Fourth Amendment, Matthew Sweat Mar 2023

A Square Double Helix In A Round Hole: Forensic Genetic Genealogy Searches And The Fourth Amendment, Matthew Sweat

Georgia State University Law Review

A forensic genetic genealogy search (FGGS) involves law enforcement’s use of consumer DNA databases to generate leads to solve cold cases. As a result of more modern technological processes, the DNA profiles kept in consumer databases are far more revealing than the DNA profiles stored in the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Accordingly, each DNA profile in a consumer database can be used to identify hundreds of relatives related to the DNA’s contributor.

The government’s use of consumer DNA databases to locate the perpetrators of horrific, unsolved crimes has generated fans and critics. Supporters of FGGSs argue that, in …

First, Do No Harm: Prioritizing Patients Over Politics In The Battle Over Gender-Affirming Care, Greg Mercer Mar 2023

First, Do No Harm: Prioritizing Patients Over Politics In The Battle Over Gender-Affirming Care, Greg Mercer

Georgia State University Law Review

The medical community’s move to reclassify gender dysphoria as a condition that results in distress rather than a mental disorder has been instrumental in destigmatizing transgender people. However, state laws that aim to strip physicians of their ability to prescribe gender-affirming care, along with physicians’ refusal to comply with federal regulations requiring access to gender-affirming care, threaten to undo those gains. Opponents of gender-affirming care attempt to wield the concept of medical judgment as both a sword and a shield—preventing physicians from exercising their medical judgment to provide gender-affirming care while simultaneously allowing physicians to abstain from providing it. Although …

A Phenomenological Study Of Experienced Social Justice Disparities Described By African American Public Policymakers, Lawrence L. Crenshaw

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe African American public policymaker's experiences with social justice disparities in the United States of America. Currently, social justice disparities are understood as inequities that exist as the result of policies and practices that create an unequal distribution of money, power, and resources among communities based on race, class, gender, and geographical location. A theme central to this investigation is to understand the impact of societal beliefs concerning mental and physical health concerns such as anxiety and hypertension among African Americans. This insight will aid in the development of positive societal-level psychological …

Lived Experiences Of Co-Teachers Including Students With Emotional Behavioral Disabilities: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Jessica Lynn Masters

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of elementary educators in a large suburban district who have engaged in the co-teaching model to support the reintegration of students with or at risk for emotional and behavioral disabilities from self-contained classrooms to the general education classroom. The theories that guided this research were the theory of planned behavior, developed and refined by Ajzen, and the attribution theory, developed by Weiner. Together, these theories support the connection between teacher factors, teacher perspectives, and predictable engagement in the behavior, such as supporting and facilitating inclusion for students …

Fluid Management In Septic Patients With Pulmonary Hypertension, Review Of The Literature, Blerina Asllanaj, Elizabeth Benge, Jieun Bae, Yi Mcwhorter

School of Medicine Faculty Research

The management of sepsis in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) is challenging due to significant conflicting goals of management and complex hemodynamics. As PH progresses, the ability of right heart to perfuse lungs at a normal central venous pressure (CVP) is impaired. Elevated pulmonary vascular pressure, due to pulmonary vasoconstriction and vascular remodeling, opposes blood flow through lungs thus limiting the ability of right ventricle (RV) to increase cardiac output (CO) and maintain adequate oxygen delivery to tissue. In sepsis without PH, avoidance of volume depletion with intravascular volume replacement, followed by vasopressor therapy if hypoperfusion persists, remains the cornerstone …
