Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Cholesterol is an important component of all mammalian cell membranes. It governs the membrane’s physical properties and creates the membrane order and heterogeneity required for complex membrane-related processes. Tight regulation of cholesterol levels and distribution are necessary for maintaining proper cell health. Likewise, disruptions in cholesterol homeostasis have been implicated in a variety of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Our lab, and others, have demonstrated the benefits of blocking acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase1/sterol O:acyltransferase 1 (ACAT1/SOAT1) in AD models by genetic ablation or pharmacological inhibition. We understand that blocking ACAT1/SOAT1 activity reduces amyloid and tau pathology, and that this is, at least …

The Invisible Victims Of Commercial Sexual Exploitation: Boys And Their Barriers To Access To Services, Amanda L. Connella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While there has been a large body of research conducted on girl (under the age of 18) victims of commercial sexual exploitation, boy (under the age of 18) victims do not seem to receive the same attention. From the few studies that have been conducted, boys and young male victims of commercial sexual exploitation have been shown to have gender specific barriers that prevent them from getting help, yet not many papers explore this unique problem. Using survey data from key providers that work in programs that serve commercially sexually exploited boys, the present study fills this hole in the …

Public Distrust, Political Participation, And The Role Of Student Government, Christine Trinh
Public Distrust, Political Participation, And The Role Of Student Government, Christine Trinh
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The turn of the 21st century presented a government led by public distrust. More and more people are growing skeptical of the government due to its previous actions, as well as overall longstanding disdain and misinformation, passed on through generations. Like many other fields, political participation is expected to be heavily influenced by rising public distrust in the government. However, there is hope in mitigating public distrust to increase political participation. Previous studies have proven civic engagement, specifically in student government at the collegiate level, leads to creating higher public trust and a wealth of political understanding and knowledge. We …

Young children’s positive interactions with teachers and peers in early care and education (ECE) settings support the development of their social and academic skills. Identifying malleable factors that contribute to children’s positive engagement in these interactions is important in supporting early development. The current study examines one potential malleable factor that could be bolstered through supports for families and teachers alike: family–teacher relationships. We investigate associations between three specific domains of family–teacher relationships and children’s engagement in ECE, so that findings are specific and relevant to intervention. We examine data from Oregon’s Quality Rating Improvement System Validation Study; a diverse …

Trafficked persons seek health care during exploitation, but few health professionals know how to respond appropriately, and few institutions have protocols to guide this response. Currently, no empirically tested framework exists to guide protocol development for human trafficking response protocols in health care settings. Our aim was to empirically evaluate the HEAL Trafficking Protocol Toolkit's usability and effectiveness through cross-sectional survey methodology. We invited users who downloaded the free Toolkit from January 2017 through January 2018 to participate in an electronic survey and conducted descriptive quantitative and qualitative thematic analyses. Survey respondents were professionally and geographically diverse. Eighty-four percent who …

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects
Introduction
For our project we worked with a non profit organization in downtown Seattle that serves houseless youth ages 18-25 with a day center and overnight shelter. Their day center has health clinics, serves lunches, and provides creative activities for the houseless to enjoy. Their overnight shelters are open every night for the houseless, providing 30 beds. The goal of the facility is to end homelessness among youth by partnering with them on their journey towards housing and sustainability. Recently, the center was approved to become a Narcan (naloxone) distribution site. When assessing the needs of the facility we identified …

Computational Medicine Center Faculty Papers
Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a severe, acute necrotizing infection of the kidney with gas accumulation in the renal parenchyma, collecting ducts, and/or perirenal tissue. We report a case of EPN in a 66 year-old male with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM), urinary tract infection and septic shock necessitating emergent bilateral radical nephrectomy. Morphologically, the kidney parenchyma revealed severe acute bacterial pyelonephritis with extensive abscesses, gas cysts, necrosis and foci of infarctions. The uninvolved background cortex parenchyma exhibited diabetic nephropathy (DN), Class IIB. Post-operatively, the patient remained dialysis-dependent with multiple re-admissions for recurrent multi-drug resistant

BACKGROUND: Accurate acetabular cup orientation is associated with decreased revision rates and improved outcomes of primary total hip arthroplasty. This study assesses surgeon's ability to estimate both the acetabular component inclination and anteversion angles via intraoperative fluoroscopy (IF) images.
METHODS: We surveyed orthopedic surgeons to estimate acetabular component inclination and anteversion based on 20 IF images of total hip arthroplasty through a direct anterior approach. Postoperative computed-tomography scans were used to calculate the true inclination and anteversion component angles. The absolute difference between the true and estimated values was calculated to determine the mean and standard deviation of the survey …

Seed pods represent an under-utilized and valuable dietary resource for zoos because they encourage naturalistic extractive foraging behavior and because seeds pods, like leafy browses, are more fiber-rich than most dietary items typically offered in zoos. The primary goal of this study was to examine the effects of honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) seed pods on the behavior and macronutrient intake of zoo-housed François’ langurs (Trachypithecus francoisi; n = 3) and prehensile-tailed porcupines (Coendou prehensilis; n = 2) using a pre- versus postdiet implementation design. From December 2019 to April 2020, we recorded behavior using instantaneous interval sampling and daily macronutrient …

Assessing children’s skin carotenoid score (SCS) using reflection spectroscopy (RS) is a non-invasive, widely used method to approximate fruit and vegetable consumption (FVC). The aims for the current review were to (1) identify distributions of SCS across demographic groups, (2) identify potential non-dietary correlates for RS-based SCS, (3) summarize the validity and reliability of RSbased SCS assessment, and (4) conduct meta-analyses of studies examining the correlation between RS-based SCS with FVC. A literature search in eight databases in June 2021 resulted in 4880 citations and peer-reviewed publications written in English that investigated children’s (2–10 years old) SCS using RS. We …

Changes In Metal-Chelating Metabolites Induced By Drought And A Root Microbiome In Wheat, Anne J. Anderson, Joshua M. Hortin, Astrid R. Jacobson, David W. Britt, Joan E. Mclean
Biological Engineering Faculty Publications
The essential metals Cu, Zn, and Fe are involved in many activities required for normal and stress responses in plants and their microbiomes. This paper focuses on how drought and microbial root colonization influence shoot and rhizosphere metabolites with metal-chelation properties. Wheat seedlings, with and without a pseudomonad microbiome, were grown with normal watering or under water-deficit conditions. At harvest, metal-chelating metabolites (amino acids, low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs), phenolic acids, and the wheat siderophore) were assessed in shoots and rhizosphere solutions. Shoots accumulated amino acids with drought, but metabolites changed little due to microbial colonization, whereas the active …
