The Effects Of Absenteeism On Organizations: A Longitudinal Study Spanning Eight Years, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
The Effects Of Absenteeism On Organizations: A Longitudinal Study Spanning Eight Years, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner
Journal of the North American Management Society
This study spanned eight years—from 2009 to 2017—and examined the effects of absenteeism on employers. The sample was randomly selected from the Louisiana Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Employer database. Most of the employers indicated that absenteeism had no effect on their operations. However, results from one-sample t tests indicate that, as a result of absenteeism, there was a statistically significant increase in the following measures: customer complaints, level of rework, amount of time spent training, tardiness, number of team and employee efforts, work schedule alterations, and late deliveries to customers. One explanation for the discrepancy between the …

Building Consumer Competence And Trust: Hrd Professionals As Champions Of Change, Rubina F. Malik, Gouri Gupte, Brandy Edmondson, Vickie Cox Edmondson
Journal of the North American Management Society
Despite allocating significant institutional resources to establishing consumer trust, organizations often unintentionally fail to ensure that the social contract between the organization and its customers is upheld and that trust is the center of every transaction. This paper seeks to answer the questions of what role, if any, do organizations play in improving consumer competence and trust, and what substantive role can human resource development professionals play in that effort? Five consumer learning strategies using adult learning principles are set forth along with a decision-making framework that can support an organizational change in the power relationship between vulnerable consumers and …

Differentiation Of Andean And Mesoamerican Accessions In A Proposed Core Collection Of Grain Amaranths, Matthew W. Blair, Jorge Londoño, María A. Buitrago-Bitar, Xingbo Wu, David M. Brenner
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Grain amaranths are made up of three New World species of pseudo-cereals with C4 photosynthesis from the dicotyledonous family Amaranthaceae and the genus Amaranthus. They originate in two ecoregions of the Americas, namely, the inter-Andean valleys of South America and the volcanic axis and lowlands of Mexico and Central America. These correspond to two centers of domestications for Andean and Mesoamerican crops, with one cultivated species found in the first region and two found in the latter region. To date, no core collection has been made for the grain amaranths in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) germplasm …

Make No Apologies: Fear Of Negative Evaluation, Depressive Symptoms, And The Mediating Role Of Accounting For Covid-Safe Behavior Amongst People At High-Risk For Severe Illness, John S. Seiter, Timothy Curran, Rebecca E. Elwood
Communication Studies and Philosophy Faculty Publications
With the goal of understanding unique and important threats to the mental health of people who are especially vulnerable to severe illness as a result of COVID-19, this study investigated associations between such individuals' fear of negative evaluation, tendency to "account for" practicing COVID-safe behaviors, and depressive symptoms. Grounded in perspectives on self-presentation, normative influence, and cognitive dissonance, we hypothesized that fear of negative evaluation would relate positively to accounting for COVID-safe behaviors, which, in turn, would associate positively with increased depressive symptoms. The results showed that increased fear of negative evaluation predicted an increased use of apologies and excuses, …

Objective
Excess mortality is an indicator of the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aims to describe excess mortality in the Philippines from January 2020 to December 2021 using an online all-cause mortality and excess mortality calculator.
Methods
All-cause mortality datasets from 2015 to 2021 from the Philippine Statistics Authority were obtained and analysed using the World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office All-Cause Mortality Calculator. Expected mortality, excess mortality and P-scores were obtained using two models, 5-year averages and negative binomial regression, for total deaths and by administrative region.
Results
Reported national all-cause mortality exceeded the …

Go‐Along Interview Assessment Of Community Health Priorities For Neighborhood Renewal, Kristen A. Berg, Adam T. Perzynski
Go‐Along Interview Assessment Of Community Health Priorities For Neighborhood Renewal, Kristen A. Berg, Adam T. Perzynski
Faculty Scholarship
Healthcare systems are increasingly investing in approaches to address social determinants of health and health disparities. Such initiatives dovetail with certain approaches to neighborhood development, such as the EcoDistrict standard for community development, that prioritize both ecologically and socially sustainable neighborhoods. However, healthcare system and community development initiatives can be untethered from the preferences and lived realities of residents in the very neighborhoods upon which they focus. Utilizing the go-along approach to collecting qualitative data in situ, we interviewed 19 adults to delineate residents' community health perspectives and priorities. Findings reveal health priorities distinct from clinical outcomes, with residents emphasizing …

Medicaid Expansion Case Study: Differences Between Florida And New York Medicaid Expansion Policy, Mary R. Zielinski
Medicaid Expansion Case Study: Differences Between Florida And New York Medicaid Expansion Policy, Mary R. Zielinski
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) expands healthcare coverage and improves healthcare delivery. While the ACA expands Medicaid coverage, many states have yet to expand. This paper utilizes a multi-state comparison case study comparing New York, a Medicaid expansion state, and Florida, a non-expansion state, to better understand Medicaid expansion decisions and influences in states. The case study identifies that the reasons behind these decisions are layered and complex; influences such as state political parties, lobbying, and overall state economics greatly influence Medicaid expansion policy.

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects
The following is my final portfolio for the Master of Arts in English with a specialization in Professional Writing and Rhetoric. It includes an analytical narrative and the three essays I revised to complete this portfolio. The narrative reflects on my academic journey, the three essays contained in the portfolio, and the skills that I learned through completing the MA program. The first essay, “Feminism, Rhetoric, History, and the Impact of Audience Assumptions in Sewing Machine Manuals,” investigates the intersection of feminism, rhetoric, and historical perspectives in technical communication by analyzing two sewing machine manuals that share a 102-year age …

The DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has reported the observation of an annual modulation in the event rate that has been attributed to dark matter interactions over the last two decades. However, even though tremendous efforts to detect similar dark matter interactions were pursued, no definitive evidence has been observed to corroborate the DAMA/LIBRA signal. Many studies assuming various dark matter models have attempted to reconcile DAMA/LIBRA's modulation signals and null results from other experiments, however no clear conclusion can be drawn. Apart from the dark matter hypothesis, several studies have examined the possibility that the modulation is induced by variations in detector's …

The Effects Of Using Case-Based Learning In A Flipped Classroom On First-Semester Nursing Students' Exam Scores, Jocelyn Wiltz
The Effects Of Using Case-Based Learning In A Flipped Classroom On First-Semester Nursing Students' Exam Scores, Jocelyn Wiltz
Student Dissertations
Nursing educators are in charge of designing a nursing curriculum that utilizes a variety of instructional techniques to accommodate the diverse learning needs of nursing students. The problem is when newly enrolled students begin an associate degree nursing program at a community college in the Texas Gulf Coast region, students may find it difficult to implement effective study habits, which negatively affects test-taking skills. Many students are unaware of how difficult nursing programs can be. Nursing program faculty must take a practical approach and implement strategies to help nursing students thrive academically. In order to prevent this phenomenon and relieve …
