Abstract
Study Design- Case Report
Background- In the process of dissecting a 78-year-old male cadaver, the body was found to have an enlarged heart, an aortic aneurysm, a hiatal hernia, the stomach protruding through the thoracic cavity. The discovery led to the suspicion of a disease known as Saint’s Triad. Saint’s Triad is a manifestation of a general connective tissue disorder, resulting in the formation of hernias, diverticula, aneurysms, or COPD. The objective is to raise awareness of the Saint’s Triad as a disease and demonstrate its relationship with connective tissue disorders. This study also aims to encourage medical professionals …

COVID-19 has caused over a million deaths in the United States. Preventative measures such as masks, social distancing, and vaccination have been implemented to fight against the disease. Unfortunately, a large subset of Americans opposed these efforts.
SC DHEC reports that as of January 2023, only 53.9 % of eligible South Carolinians have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Previous studies have shown vaccine hesitancy is influenced largely by personal concerns about vaccine development, peer vaccination status, and general skepticism of immunization.
Hesitancy towards pediatric vaccination is particularly concerning because unvaccinated children can act as vessels to exponentially accelerate COVID-19 transmission. …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 16(5): 458-468, 2023. Exercise stimulates the production and secretion of testosterone, cortisol, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and affects cognitive performance. However, the interaction of these variables is unknown. To investigate these interactions, 21 college-aged men completed two work-matched exercise protocols: continuous (CONT) exercise and an interval protocol (INT). Blood and saliva samples were collected before and after exercise to quantify BDNF, cortisol, and testosterone. Participants completed a battery of cognitive assessments after exercise. A MANOVA analysis of condition demonstrated that no domains were significantly different after CONT and INT (p > 0.05). A repeated …

Exhaust Noise Elimination Using Silencers Fortified With Perforated Tubes, Extended Tubes, Penetrable Resin Inlet And Orifice Plate, Min-Chie Chiu, Ho-Chih Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Pneumatic equipment in marine diesel engine and associated piping system often emit extremely high level of noises when releasing pressure. Concerning the crew’s hearing health, discovering an efficient noise silencing device becomes essential. A silencer fortified with extended tubes, perforated tubes, orifice plate, and penetrable resin inlet is presented in order to competently dampen the blown-up noises. A simplified objective function by means of FEM, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is established to enable the numerical calculation when using a finite element method. Three silencer designs, silencer A (with element A, a penetrable resin inlet), B …

Combustion Of Scrap Waste Tires Of A Cogeneration Plant, Chin-Ko Yeh, Rong-Hua Yeh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Various fuels can be used in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. In this study, the thermal and economic performance was investigated for three CFB fuels—heavy fuel oil, coal, and waste tire scraps—used in a cogeneration plant. The plant comprised a CFB boiler, a single-cylinder steam-extraction turbine, and a generator. Tire scrap combustion generated the most power per ton during peak hours: approximately 27.5% more than that generated using heavy oil and 42.3% more than when coal was employed; it also resulted in higher boiler efficiency during peak operation than coal (1.2% higher) or heavy oil (12.6% higher). The net plant …

ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a neurodegenerative disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function. The C9 Gene is responsible for creating proteins that help neurons send and receive signals across the synapse. Small Conductance calcium activated potassium channels (SK channels) affect the hyperpolarization phase of an action potential. Hypothesis: SK2 and SK3 clusters of C9 positive cells should decrease in size and intensity when exposed to a disease state compared to C9 negative controls.

The neurological complications of COVID-19 are fearsome and not understood Ischemic strokes, meningo-encephalitis, peripheral nerve damage, agitated delirium, dysosmia, and psychiatric disturbances have all been extensively documented. SARS-CoV-2 appears to directly invade neural tissue and triggers states of hypercoagulability, immune system activation, and hypoxemia, all of which contribute to severe brain dysfunction and possible damage in the acute phase. The motivation to initiate action is central to adaptive functioning but is impaired in a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. In particular, a significant number of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) demonstrate clinically-significant apathy - i.e., a negative change …

Based on self-determination theory (SDT), motivation can be understood as existing on a continuum from the most to the least self-determined (autonomous motivation, introjected regulation, external regulation, amotivation) with more self-determined motivations associated with positive health outcomes, and less self-determined motivations associated with negative health outcomes. Using a newly developed measure of motivations to use cannabis responsibly (TRSQ), we sought to identify unique subpopulations of cannabis users based on their motivations to use (or not use) cannabis use responsibly, positing that those with more self-determined motivations would report higher use of cannabis protective behavioral strategies (PBS) and lower cannabis use/problems. …

Opioid use disorder (OUD) and opioid overdose are urgent public health crises, with opioid overdose rates tripling within the last decade in the United States. Current treatments have limited efficacy, and challenges associated with implementation. Vaccines against opioids have recently been proposed as novel treatments, with some vaccine strategies showing promising pre-clinical data. Here, we report our efforts to engineer a vaccine against heroin that elicits high-titer and long-lasting antibodies with protective functionality. We utilized bacteriophage Qβ virus-like particles (VLPs) to display drug targets in a highly immunogenic and multivalent format. The active metabolites of heroin, morphine and 6-aceyl-morphine, were …

Brain & Behavioral Health Research Day
Background:
Impaired cerebral autoregulation has been associated with worse outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Recent data demonstrated that oxygen reactivity measured by either parenchymal probes or near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) may be associated with worse clinical outcomes and occurrence of spreading depolarization events.
Methods:
We prospectively collected continuous multimodality monitoring recordings in patients with aneurysmal treated at our institution between 2011 and 2021. Physiologic data were linked using the Moberg Component Neuromonitoring system (CNS) and clinical data were obtained by chart review. Continuous autoregulation indices were calculated using the CNS Envision software retrospectively for all available data …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive brain cancer with a median survival time of 14.6 months after diagnosis. GBM cells have altered metabolism and exhibit the Warburg effect, preferentially producing lactate under aerobic conditions. After standard-of-care treatment for GBM, there is an almost 100% recurrence rate. Hypoxia-adapted, treatment-resistant GBM stem-like cells are thought to drive this high recurrence rate. We used human T98G GBM cells as a model to identify differential gene expression induced by hypoxia and to search for potential therapeutic targets of hypoxia adapted GBM cells. RNA sequencing (RNAseq) and bioinformatics were used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) …

Are Deficit Perspectives Thriving In Trauma-Informed Schools? A Historical And Anti-Racist Reflection, Cora Palma, Annmary S. Abdou, Scot Danforth, Amy Jane Griffiths
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Mental health research concerning adverse childhood experiences and neurocognitive trauma has prompted many school districts to pursue the development of trauma-informed schools that attend specifically to the emotional and instructional needs of affected students. Researchers and practitioners are fast proliferating trauma-informed professional practices. Given research findings indicating disproportionate impacts of trauma on students of color and those living in poverty, in this article, we examine the risks of trauma-informed educational programs reanimating cultural deficit theories from the 1960s about marginalized students and families. Educators are challenged to thoughtfully fortify trauma-informed schooling by increasing awareness of deficit perspectives and incorporating critical …
