Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Parenting Adult Learners Regarding Persistence In Two-Year Community Colleges, Michelle T. Webb Ed.D. Apr 2023

Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Parenting Adult Learners Regarding Persistence In Two-Year Community Colleges, Michelle T. Webb Ed.D.

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

This qualitative phenomenological study examined the results of semi-structured interviews conducted with six parenting adult learners (ParentALs) enrolled in three public two-year community colleges in the United States. This study investigated the problem of a lack of understanding of the experiences of ParentALs enrolled in community colleges. The purpose of this study was to examine how the lived experiences of ParentALs enrolled in community colleges may influence their persistence. Three themes emerged from the literature review and data analysis: the identity of the ParentAL, characteristics and intersectionality of factors, experiences, and perceptions that may influence ParentAL persistence in community college, …

Metrics And Measurements In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz Apr 2023

Metrics And Measurements In Church-Based Research, David R. Dunaetz

Great Commission Research Journal

To better understand the characteristics of specific churches and phenomena that occur across churches, various metrics and measurements can be used to describe them. Measurements must be meaningful and appropriate. Quantities involving people, finances, objects, or events are most frequently counted, but other measures may include behaviors, traits, skills, knowledge, and abilities of individuals. Measuring phenomena is necessary to understand how phenomena are related to each other. Measuring attitudes and beliefs are especially important because many ministries in churches are designed to influence these (e.g., preaching and teaching). However, from a Christian perspective, our motivation behind our measuring is important. …

The Effects Of Inservice Science Teachers’ Self-Efficacy On Science Achievement Using The 5e Model Of Instruction., O'Tessa Nicole Pelham Apr 2023

The Effects Of Inservice Science Teachers’ Self-Efficacy On Science Achievement Using The 5e Model Of Instruction., O'Tessa Nicole Pelham

Theses and Dissertations

Science achievement has been a major focus in our educational system. While several learning models effectively increase science achievement, the nation is still not progressing adequately. A gap in the literature shows the need to find the effects of teachers’ self-efficacy, specifically with in-service science teachers. A pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group, quasi-experimental research design was used in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 to find the effects of in-service science teachers’ self-efficacy on science achievement, using the 5E Instructional Model. The study included 38 in-service science teachers who rated items on the pretest/posttest STEBI-A. Teachers in the experimental group consisted of …

Development And Validation Of A Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Method For The Determination Of Temozolomide In Mouse Brain Tissue, Raghavi Kakarla, Kimberly Yacoub, Rebecca L. Bearden, Aimin Zhou, Sanjib Mukherjee, Frank Y. Shan, Baochuan Guo

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Temozolomide is a Food and Drug Administration-approved anticancer drug that has poor drug delivery via oral or intravenous routes. A potential strategy to combat this problem is investigating alternative routes of administration, requiring quantitation of the drug in the brain tissues by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. However, current methods used to extract the drug from brain tissues resulted in poor recovery and substantial matrix effects. Herein, we reported a new two-step extraction method that involves the use of Proteinase K to lyse tumor tissues to efficiently release the drug, followed by ethanol protein precipitation. The extracts were then separated on a …

The Impact Of Remote Video Monitoring On Costs And Patient Outcomes, Karen Wyche Latham Msn, Rn, Nea-Bc, Cenp

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Reducing patient falls remains a challenge for many acute care hospitals. Sitters (1:1 observation) are often utilized as an intervention to mitigate this. This costly intervention has drained both personnel and financial resources, forcing hospitals to find less costly alternatives to achieve the same safety outcomes. Remote video monitoring technology (RVM) is an innovative technology that supports the monitoring of multiple patients by one observer from a remote location and is an effective alternative in reducing patient falls and/or injury and associated costs.

Aim: The goal of this evidence-based practice initiative was to evaluate the effectiveness of RVM compared …

Dog Days: Does Interaction With A Therapy Dog Improve The Well-Being In A High School Classroom?, Carley E. Downing

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

The purpose of this pilot study was to examine influences of interaction with a trained facility therapy dog on a sample of high school students. Much of the existing literature on animal assisted therapy interaction engages with populations of younger children, college-aged adults, the elderly. This small sample (n=8) of adolescents provides insight into a population that despite benefiting from the interventions, is not widely studied. Emotional regulation and grit inventories were used to compare scores before and after direct interactions with the therapy dog. Emotional regulation scores improved following direct exposure to the therapy dog over a one-week period, …

Adverse Childhood Experiences And School Productivity: What Is The Role Of Social Networks And Religion, Fahima Noor Ali Apr 2023

Adverse Childhood Experiences And School Productivity: What Is The Role Of Social Networks And Religion, Fahima Noor Ali

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events children experience that can have lifelong impacts (Blodgett & Lanigan, 2018). These traumatic events may include verbal, physical, or sexual abuse, as well as family stress or dysfunction, such as the loss of a parent, incarcerated family members, substance use, economic hardships, community violence, and natural disasters. Research shows ACEs are associated with negative psychological impacts such as anxiety and depression (Zare et al., 2018). While previous research emphasized an examination of negative mental and other health outcomes, the current study sought to examine further how ACEs are associated with negative educational outcomes. …

A Conceptual Analysis And Variable Identification Study Of First-Language Attrition, Neil Edward Cantrall Apr 2023

A Conceptual Analysis And Variable Identification Study Of First-Language Attrition, Neil Edward Cantrall

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Children who grow up hearing and speaking one language and then begin learning another often experience first-language (L1) attrition. Existing research presents different theories regarding the process and the contributing factors of L1 attrition. However, the theories and factors are often dispersed throughout the literature with little coherent presentation. This makes it difficult for researchers and some practitioners to model L1 attrition with other variables properly. This study merged conceptual and content analysis through literature reviews to identify the relevant and essential variables that play a role in L1 attrition. I reviewed 54 textual sources which presented information or studies …

Racial Isolation, School Police, And The “School-To-Prison Pipeline”: An Empirical Perspective On The Enduring Salience Of “Tipping Points”, Michael Heise Apr 2023

Racial Isolation, School Police, And The “School-To-Prison Pipeline”: An Empirical Perspective On The Enduring Salience Of “Tipping Points”, Michael Heise

Buffalo Law Review

Two broad trends inform public K-12 education’s current trajectory. One involves persisting (and recently increasing) school racial isolation which helps account for an array of costs borne by students, schools, and communities. A second trend, involving a dramatically increasing police presence in schools, is evidenced by a rising school resource officer (“SRO/police”) presence in schools. Increases in the magnitude of a school’s SRO/police presence correspond with increases in the school’s propensity to engage law enforcement agencies in student disciplinary matters which, in turn, help fuel a growing school-to-prison pipeline problem. While these two broad trends propel two distinct research literatures, …

Forcing Supreme Court Review By The Federal Circuit, Jeremy W. Bock Apr 2023

Forcing Supreme Court Review By The Federal Circuit, Jeremy W. Bock

Buffalo Law Review

From time to time, a federal court of appeals may want the Supreme Court to take a case because it is stuck: there is an unresolved issue that is important to the day-to-day administration of justice, but an en banc sitting would be futile. The Supreme Court, however, has a haystack problem: it receives several thousand certiorari petitions each year, of which approximately 1% receive plenary review. The literature suggests that the selection of the certworthy needles in this petition haystack is a black-box process affected by discretion and situational factors that make timely review unpredictable and difficult to obtain. …

Socio-Economic Considerations Of Living Modified Organisms And Impacts On Trade: Evolution Of Environmental Disputes At The World Trade Organization, Leonardo Munhoz

Dissertations & Theses

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is the most important international treaty concerning the conservation of biodiversity and the Cartagena Protocol is a specific instrument to regulate biosafety measures for Living Modified Organisms ("LMOs"). In this Protocol, apart from mandatory environmental and health risk assessments, the Parties can also voluntarily adopt socio and economic considerations ("SECs") arising from LMOs, as stated in article 26.

However, the definition of SECs is still under negotiation, therefore it does not currently have a definite concept and meaning. Also, the last Conference of the Parties proposed to expand SECs by adding extra cultural, traditional, …

Wastewater: History And Impact On Society, James H. Macy Apr 2023

Wastewater: History And Impact On Society, James H. Macy

Honors Thesis

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, wastewater surveillance has gained popularity and has proved itself to be an useful public health tool. In this paper, I looked at four different methods to filter wastewater: Membrane filtering, Polyethylene Glycol, Skim Milk Flocculation, and Magnetic Bead filtering. Membrane filtering’s main goal is to take a large sample and reduce it to a small sample for molecular analysis. Polyethylene Glycol helps the Covid-19 RNA bind to it. With the use of centrifuge the RNA is spun down to a pellet used for molecular analysis. Skim Milk Flocculation uses skimmed milk as the flocculation polymer and …

Investigating The Effects Of Sex And Carvedilol On Ischemia Preconditioning Protective Effect, Casey Jc Miller Apr 2023

Investigating The Effects Of Sex And Carvedilol On Ischemia Preconditioning Protective Effect, Casey Jc Miller

Honors Thesis

Many studies have been done on ischemic preconditioning and its protective effects using the murine model with overwhelmingly consistent and promising results. However, many clinical trials have failed to demonstrate the protective effects of ischemic preconditioning. The causes of the inconsistency are unknown. The effect of sex on ischemic preconditioning protection is largely unclear, which may be a contributing factor. Additionally, in clinical trials, the recruited patients were most likely taking some medications. This project aimed to test the differences in sex on preconditioning protection and the effect of a common β-blocker medication, Carvedilol, on preconditioning protection. Tourniquet-induced unilateral hindlimb …
