Mental Health In Transnational Contexts: Reconsidering Conceptualizations, Coping Strategies, And Racism Through The Narratives Of Refugees Resettled In The United States, Ryeora Choe, Ryeora Choe

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation examines refugees’ mental health conceptualizations in their resettled contexts, their views on Western mental health services, and their perspectives on how changing experiences related to discrimination affect their mental health. Despite refugees’ social and cultural contexts changing multiple times, little is known about their views on and interactions with the dominant biomedical model of mental health in their country of resettlement and how their hybrid identities and experiences embedded in multiple locations affect their understanding of mental health and healing practices. A transnational framework emphasizing continuity between various locations and “in-between the designations of identity” across borders, and …

Client Educational Handouts

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder often caused by genetic predisposition combined with environmental factors. ASD can be present in many different forms and severity levels. On the mild end of the spectrum people are often able to enter into mainstream education and integrate into the workplace with the use of therapeutic learned skills to improve their social skills. On the more severe end of the spectrum, autistic people may never learn functional social skills or ways to communicate. These barriers can be challenging for the autistic person and their family. It is a disorder that is lifelong. Treatments …

All Works

Behavioral problems cause limitations in the social skills of children without disabilities and affect the functionality of children with disabilities. The Emirati child adaptation scale (ECAS) was developed in the UAE to provide reliable and valid information on the behavioral adaptation skills in children with and without intellectual disability (ID). The scale’s item pool consists of 651 items that identify behavioral adaptation deficits across the 10 domain–skill areas of communication, pre-academic, listening, social, self-care, self-orientation, motor skills, operational society, life, and health and safety. The scale was administered to 1542 children with disabilities and 920 children without disabilities. The scale …

Haptic Systems: Trends And Lessons Learned For Haptics In Spacesuits, Mohammad Amin Kuhail, Jose Berengueres, Fatma Taher, Mariam Alkuwaiti, Sana Z. Khan

All Works

Haptic technology uses forces, vibrations, and movements to simulate a sense of touch. In the context of spacesuits, proposals to use haptic systems are scant despite evidence of their efficacy in other domains. Existing review studies have sought to summarize existing haptic system applications. Despite their contributions to the body of knowledge, existing studies have not assessed the applicability of existing haptic systems in spacesuit design to meet contemporary challenges. This study asks, “What can we learn from existing haptic technologies to create spacesuits?”. As such, we examine academic and commercial haptic systems to address this issue and draw insights …

Dnp Final Report: An Evidence-Based Initiative To Reduce Risk Of Ventilator-Associated Events, Bailey Dee Burge Apr 2023

Dnp Final Report: An Evidence-Based Initiative To Reduce Risk Of Ventilator-Associated Events, Bailey Dee Burge

DNP Final Reports

Ventilator-associated events have been considered an outcome metric for quality patient care. Ventilator-associated events are associated with unnecessary medical expenses. These events are multifactorial, yet bedside nurses can help decrease this nosocomial infection through proper oral care. A PICOT question was constructed to search the evidence systematically. The systematic literature search evidence was appraised to provide recommendations for the bundle of care process regarding ventilator-associated event prevention, specifically oral care. The body of evidence was comprised of five articles reporting statically significant outcomes. The evidence-based oral care protocol was implemented for a quarter of a year in patients with mechanical …

Dnp Final Report: Decreasing Stress & Anxiety In Nursing Students: A Mindfulness-Based Program Intervention, Jennifer L. Cole

DNP Final Reports

Nursing students experience increased stress and anxiety due to the rigorous requirements of nursing school. Students often feel pressure to perform in a competitive environment that stretches them mentally and physically to learn extensive didactic material while simultaneously performing competently in clinical settings. Without effective methods to address self-care, students may experience the ramifications of unresolved stress. The practice question guiding the project was: In undergraduate Level II nursing students (P), does implementing a Mindfulness Based Program (MBP) (I), compared to not implementing a MBP (C), affect stress, anxiety, and mindfulness (O) during a semester (T)? Based on systematic review …

Climate change is disrupting the fundamental conditions of human life and exacerbating existing inequity by placing further burdens on communities that are already vulnerable. Risk exposure varies by where people live and work. In this article, we examine the spatial overlap of the compound risks of COVID-19 and extreme heat in New York City. We assess the relationship between socio-demographic and natural, built and social environmental characteristics, and the spatial correspondence of COVID-19 daily case rates across three pandemic waves. We use these data to create a compound risk index combining heat, COVID-19, density and social vulnerability. Our findings demonstrate …

The Hero’S Journey As A Novel, Narrative, And Improvisational Group Intervention On Quality Of Life For People With Parkinson’S Disease, Robert D. Cochrane, James W. Navalta, Anne E. Weisman

Heroism Science

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the fastest-growing neurological diseases in the world. Pharmaceutical and surgical interventions continue to advance to better address motor symptoms. However, disability from non-motor symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and stress persist. Expressive therapies, including art, music, and dance are being explored and implemented more frequently to address this growing need. We developed this study to examine the feasibility of a novel program using online narrative therapy, with constructs from Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, and improvisation for people with PD (PWPD). Participants from across the U.S. and U.K. met online via Zoom once a week …

Mycorrhizal Symbioses And Plant Interactions, Domenico Prisa Apr 2023

Mycorrhizal Symbioses And Plant Interactions, Domenico Prisa

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The growing interest in mycorrhizal fungi in agriculture is related to their symbiotic relationships with cultivated plants. Thanks to functional genomics approaches, mycorrhizae and symbioses with host plants have emerged for their fea-tures. Besides improving nutritional supply, plant-fungal interactions increase plants' tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity and cold, as well as their resistance to diseases. Recent studies have investigated the interactions between plants and mycorrhizae, however the mechanisms often remain unclear. Indeed, plants in the field are affected by various stresses and results often appear contradictory. This review is aimed at presenting the most relevant studies in …

Teach-Back Education In Heart Failure Patients Benchmark Study, Bethany N. Johnson Apr 2023

Teach-Back Education In Heart Failure Patients Benchmark Study, Bethany N. Johnson

MSN Capstone Projects

Heart failure exasperation is one of the most common causes of hospital readmission in the United States (Breathett et al., 2018). It is estimated that greater than half of all heart failure patients will be readmitted to the hospital within six months of discharge (Caluya, 2021). Additionally, one in four individuals with heart failure are readmitted within thirty days of discharge (Rahmani et al., 2020). This data shows a large area of improvement for hospitals in order to improve patient outcomes. Due to the lack of standardized discharge teaching, heart failure patients are often admitted to the hospital for the …

The Bankruptcy Of Purdue Pharma In The Wake Of Big Tobacco, Jacob Hedgpeth Apr 2023

The Bankruptcy Of Purdue Pharma In The Wake Of Big Tobacco, Jacob Hedgpeth

University of Colorado Law Review Forum

Two distinct public health crises shook the United States from 1954 to 2023: nicotine addiction from tobacco products, and opioid addiction starting with Purdue Pharmaceutical’s OxyContin. These crises resulted in millions of deaths and immense costs to the country as a whole. The nicotine crisis ended in a national settlement against four major tobacco manufacturers, which yielded hundreds of millions of dollars for those harmed by these products. The owners of Purdue, however, opted for bankruptcy instead of settlement, keeping the majority of the money made from OxyContin for Purdue’s owners, the Sackler family.

These four tobacco giants and Purdue …

Individual Characteristics That Promote Or Prevent Psychological Safety And Error Reporting In Healthcare: A Systematic Review., Dawn M. Wawersik, Emile R. Boutin, Teresa Gore, Janice C. Palaganas

HPD Articles

BACKGROUND: Healthcare errors continue to be a safety issue and an economic burden that causes death, increased length of stays, and emotional trauma to families and the person who commits the error.  Speaking up and error reporting within a safety culture can reduce the incidence of error; however, this is complex and multifaceted.

AIM: This systematic review investigates individual characteristics that support or prevent speaking up behaviors when adverse events occur.  This study further explores how organizational interventions designed to promote error reporting correlate to individual characteristics and perceptions of psychological safety.  .

METHODS: A systematic review of peer-reviewed articles …

How Resilience Is Framed Matters For Governance Of Coastal Social-Ecological Systems, Sarah Clement, Javad Jozaei, Michael Mitchell, Craig R. Allen, Ahjond S. Garmestani Apr 2023

How Resilience Is Framed Matters For Governance Of Coastal Social-Ecological Systems, Sarah Clement, Javad Jozaei, Michael Mitchell, Craig R. Allen, Ahjond S. Garmestani

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Effective governance of social-ecological systems (SES) is an enduring challenge, especially in coastal environments where accelerating impacts of climate change are increasing pressure on already stressed systems. While resilience is often proposed as a suitable framing to re-orient governance and management, the literature includes many different, and sometimes conflicting, definitions and ideas that influence how the concept is applied, especially in coastal environments. This study combines discourse analysis of the coastal governance literature and key informant interviews in Tasmania, Australia, demonstrating inconsistencies and confusion in the way that resilience is framed in coastal governance research and practice. We find that …

Pathology Logics, S. Lisa Washington Apr 2023

Pathology Logics, S. Lisa Washington

Northwestern University Law Review

Every year, thousands of marginalized parents become ensnared in the family regulation system, an apparatus more commonly referred to as the child welfare system. In prior work, I examined how the coercion of domestic violence survivors in the family regulation system perpetuates harmful knowledge production and serves to legitimize family regulation intervention. This Article focuses on another logic deeply embedded in the family regulation system: the pathologizing of impoverished and racialized groups. Scholars have discussed the pathologizing of marginalized groups to describe a host of different phenomena. In this Article, “pathology logic” refers to a logic that produces notions of …

Women's Stories Of Reaching A Diagnosis Of Endometriosis: A Qualitative Study, Susan C. Debolt Apr 2023

Women's Stories Of Reaching A Diagnosis Of Endometriosis: A Qualitative Study, Susan C. Debolt

DNP Projects

Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological condition affecting 10% of reproductive-aged women worldwide. Women with endometriosis often experience a decreased quality of life compared to women without endometriosis. The average time to diagnosis is greater than six years for adult women and greater than 11 years for adolescents. Yet, there is little research investigating the pre-diagnostic experiences of women with endometriosis. This study aims to inform healthcare providers of patients' pre-diagnostic experiences of endometriosis in an effort to improve patient care. Using one-on-one, semi-structured online interviews and a qualitative design, this study explored six women's pre-diagnostic experiences of endometriosis. The main …

Culturally Sensitive Emergency Care For Sexual And Gender Minority Youth, Kaysi Goodall

DNP Projects

There is substantial evidence of disparities in access to healthcare and health outcomes affecting sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY). However, evidence of SGMY cultural sensitivity training for pediatric emergency health professionals is limited. This quality improvement research project in an urban pediatric emergency department (PED) used a cross-sectional, pre-test post-test design to improve health professionals’ knowledge, attitudinal awareness, and clinical preparedness in caring for this population. It was informed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Model for Improvement and completed in four Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. Evidence-based pedagogical strategies were utilized for a 60-minute staff training session, including introducing foundational …

To Study Heart Rate Dynamics Of Preterm Infants Using Lstm Based Deep Learning Model, Soniya Poudel Chhetri Apr 2023

To Study Heart Rate Dynamics Of Preterm Infants Using Lstm Based Deep Learning Model, Soniya Poudel Chhetri

Electrical Engineering Theses

Babies born prematurely are more likely to experience serious medical problems called Bradycardia, where their heart rate drops below 100 beats per minute(bpm). Bradycardia can decrease cerebral blood velocities by 10-50% from their normal level [6], potentially harming the infant's developing brain and other vital organs. Healthcare professionals working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) face challenges evaluating the likelihood of these events occurring in preterm babies based on their physiological signals. Forecasting and tracking bradycardia events before time will help save thousands of preterm infants from losing their lives. While time series analysis of heart rate data is one …

Combination Thromboembolism Prevention Prophylaxis, Karma Davis

MSN Capstone Projects

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of preventable hospital death in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). The correct selection of VTE prophylaxis in hospitalized patients is critical in stopping increased length of stays, incurring extra costs, and preventing deaths. Currently, the single modality of pneumatic compression sleeves (ICD) are often utilized for inpatient deep vein thrombosis prevention. ICDs are an easy, quick way for physicians to meet the requirement for VTE prevention in both general medical patients and those in the critical care unit. However, patients may remove or refuse this type of prevention …

Diabetes Education Benchmark Study, Caitlyn A. Wildey Apr 2023

Diabetes Education Benchmark Study, Caitlyn A. Wildey

MSN Capstone Projects

Diabetes mellitus is a disease that happens when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not respond to insulin. Type two diabetes happens when there isn’t enough insulin produced in the body, when there is resistance to the action of insulin in the body, or when the body does not use the insulin produced properly (Type 2 Diabetes, n.d.). Type two diabetes is important because of the increasing incidence of the disease and the complications that come if not managed. Some of the complications associated with type two diabetes include heart disease, kidney disease, neuropathy, retinopathy, and diabetic …

Technology-Mediated Diabetes Prevention Program (Dpp) Benchmark Project, Devon Senical

MSN Capstone Projects

This benchmark project intends to broaden access to the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) by offering technology-mediated content at the primary care level because the Primary Care Physician (PCP) predominantly diagnoses prediabetes due to the recommendation by The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) that nonpregnant overweight or obese adults aged 35 to 70 be screened for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes (Davidson et al., 2021). Thus, the primary care setting is the first opportunity to impact the conversion from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes. Of the 84 million people in the United States (U.S.) with prediabetes, they are estimated to …
