Dynamic Individualized Latent Trait (Dilt) Model: Bridging Nomothetic And Idiographic Psychometrics, Muchen Xi
Dynamic Individualized Latent Trait (Dilt) Model: Bridging Nomothetic And Idiographic Psychometrics, Muchen Xi
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation aims to develop an analytical framework that bridges the long-standing divide between nomothetic and idiographic approaches to defining the structure of personality and other individual differences. The nomothetic tradition seeks to explain and predict behavior through stable, universal dimensions of personality, while the idiographic approach emphasizes the fine-grained, dynamic processes unique to individuals. Although theoretical advances have begun to reconcile these perspectives, analytical methods capable of integrating them remain underdeveloped. To address this gap, I introduce the Dynamic Individualized Latent Trait (DILT) model, a framework that decomposes ordinal item responses from intensive longitudinal data into three components: 1) …
Personality, And Generation In Green Entrepreneurship, Julie Garritano
Personality, And Generation In Green Entrepreneurship, Julie Garritano
Honors Projects
This research investigates the drivers of Green Entrepreneurial Intent (GEI) by examining the intersection of personality traits and immigrant generation status. Utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework, the study focuses on how openness to experience and conscientiousness—the traits most strongly associated with sustainability-oriented innovation—influence entrepreneurial intentions.
A central aim is to determine how first- and second-generation immigrant statuses moderate these relationships, particularly through the lens of intergenerational transmission of values and social norms. The study integrates illustrative case analyses of Timberland and Patagonia to trace how environmental stewardship and ethical business practices evolve across successive leadership generations.

The purpose of this project is to provide a quantifiable and repeatable measurement of how the presence of garlic and chili pepper during the growth of a carious dentine strain of Streptococcus mutans affects the growth of the strain and surrounding pH level. This research project examines two possible alternative agents, garlic and chili peppers, due to the known antimicrobial effects of their active components, allicin and capsaicin. Prepared garlic and chili extracts were used during disk diffusion to assess and measure the zones of inhibition. The anticipated results are that there will be inhibition present with both the garlic and …
Environmental Counseling As A Proposed Discipline And Its Associated Implications And Uses, Alexandria Rion
Environmental Counseling As A Proposed Discipline And Its Associated Implications And Uses, Alexandria Rion
Honors Projects
Individuals interact with their environment daily, and whether they realize it or not, these interactions can impact their health. Understanding the health impacts associated with the environment is important to human health at both an individual and population level. I am proposing a new field of environmental counseling that would incorporate principles from a variety of practices into one comprehensive discipline that can be used to promote public health. By studying populations that have had negative environmental exposures and looking at their outcomes, I was able to apply principles of environmental counseling to help determine if it would in fact …
A Trauma Psychology Approach To Space Psychology And Long-Duration Space Travel In Consideration Of Isolation, Resource Scarcity, And Group Dynamics., Alden Nicoll
Honors Projects
As modern societies research and prepare for long-duration deep space travel, psychological research becomes increasingly prevalent into understanding the effects of trauma on the psyche. This present study looks at the current research outcomes of “Team Dynamics”, “Social Isolation”, and “Resource Scarcity” within the literature of Space Psychology. Current research on social isolation is taken from past missions in outer space and analog missions in Antarctica, at sea, and prison research. While research is vast on social isolation, it doesn’t consider how trauma could be intensified with both time and duration in space. Next, when considering team dynamics and how …
Harm Reduction Strategies In Addiction Recovery: Effectiveness, Barriers, And The Role Of Social Stigma, Julia J. Amlin
Harm Reduction Strategies In Addiction Recovery: Effectiveness, Barriers, And The Role Of Social Stigma, Julia J. Amlin
Honors Projects
Substance use disorders (SUDs) present a major global public health crisis. An estimated 46.3 million individuals are affected in the United States, with only a small fraction receiving any form of treatment. While abstinence-based models have historically dominated addiction treatment methods, harm reduction approaches have emerged as evidence-based alternatives that reduce overdose mortality, improve treatment engagement, and decrease the transmission of infectious diseases. Despite strong empirical support harm reduction interventions continue to face significant social, political, and structural resistance. These harm reduction interventions include supervised consumption sites, overdose prevention centers, medication-assisted treatment, naloxone distribution, and drug checking technologies. This resistance …

Nondelegation In Winter (Again), David Zaring
Nondelegation In Winter (Again), David Zaring
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Last term, the Supreme Court – these days thought to be intensely interested in reviving a formalist separation of the branches of government – has finally abandoned the quintessence of that project, a revitalization of the nondelegation doctrine. This essay argues that the Court’s decision in FCC v. Consumers’ Research reflects a pragmatic turn: rather than rewriting the test for nondelegation, the Court retained the old test, gave up on formalist reform, and indicated that it will be looking elsewhere for separation of powers remedies. The result is a jurisprudence that remains formally attached to its precedents while embracing the …

Exploring The Relations Between Employer Beliefs And Workplace Practices: Organizational Factors And Autism Employment Outcomes, Melinda Ann Henson
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Autistic individuals experience persistent employment disparities despite interventions targeting individual skills and supports, suggesting that workplace factors also shape employment outcomes. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) posits that workplace environments supporting employee autonomy, competence, and relatedness promote employment outcomes. This study examined SDT-aligned practices and tested associations between employer beliefs about autism as a form of neurodiversity, hiring receptivity, and employment outcomes for Autistic professionals. A preliminary aim was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a newly developed measure, the Workplace Inclusivity and Autonomy Survey (WIAS), designed to assess SDT practices via employer report. Participants included 43 professionals representing a range of …

Dentistry
Objectives: This study compared subtractive and additive fabrication methods regarding their impact on the marginal/internal fit, trueness, and precision of lithium disilicate ceramic veneers. Methods: Laminate veneer preparations on an acrylic tooth were duplicated into twenty-four additively manufactured resin dies. Veneers were digitally designed and fabricated via milling (subtractive) or 3D-printing (additive) (n=12/group). All veneers were scanned. For trueness, the final design served as the reference; for precision, pairwise comparisons were made within each group. For adaptation, the scanned die was the reference. Post-cementation and thermal cycling (10,000 cycles, 5–55°C), marginal adaptation was measured using a digital microscope (×100). Data …
Autoantibody Reactivity In Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Characterizing Keratinocyte And Apocrine Gland Targets Across Disease Progression And Anti-Tnf-Α Treatment, Talla Hamouche
Student Theses and Dissertations
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disease associated with impaired quality of life, representing one of the highest burdens among dermatological conditions. This debilitating disorder primarily affects apocrine-gland-bearing and flexural skin areas, most commonly the axillae, breast, buttocks, and groin. As lesions recur and new sites emerge, surgical excision does not guarantee prevention of disease reestablishment. Despite its substantial burden, HS remains among the least understood and most treatment-resistant inflammatory diseases. The mechanisms underlying this chronicity and the frequent failure of conventional anti-inflammatory therapies remain unresolved. An underappreciated autoimmune dimension may contribute to HS pathogenesis: the clonal …

Promoting Trauma-Informed Practices Through Staff Education, Ediomi Enebong Oduwole
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Front office staff in outpatient psychiatric settings are often the first point of contact for patients experiencing anxiety and emotional distress. However, existing evidence indicates that non-clinical, front office staff often lack formal training in trauma-informed care (TIC). This gap may limit early recognition and response to patient distress. This quality improvement project addressed this gap by evaluating the impact of a trauma-informed educational intervention of staff confidence and documentation of patient distress. The project was guided by Pender’s Health Promotion Model and Lewin’s Change Theory. It used a pre-and post-intervention quantitative design with sample of five front office staff …

Homeless Veterans: How To Help Veterans Receive Their Benefits So No Veteran Is Without Sustainable Housing, Kelly Hancock
Nonprofit and NGO Studies Student Projects
In this research, I examined why veterans remain homeless despite available resources and what can be done to place them in sustainable housing. I did this through interviews with VA staff and by examining various projects implemented to support veterans. In my research, I found that the resources are available for veterans if they know to request them. The VA employees noted that misconceptions and misinformation are leading causes of veterans not asking for help. Therefore, a solution would be for civilians to call the VA hotline to report homeless veterans. They will then meet the veterans where they are …

Using Multiple Means Of Representation To Enhance Higher Education Student Learning, Cathy Stephens
Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry
Today’s students enter higher education from diverse backgrounds with differing educational pathways. Universal design for learning recognises that learners are not homogenous and suggests ways of improving engagement, understanding and agency for heterogeneous learners by including varied resource formats and instructional approaches, or multiple means of representation. While institutional imperatives often call for consistency of approaches and pre-designed content formats, this small pilot study asks if the implementation of varied resources and activities can enhance student comprehension and understanding of project requirements in a creative course. This small-scale study surveyed students on the perceived value of a variety of resources, …

Echoes Of Memories Erased: A Reflection On Underscoring Between The Fractures, Nat Texler
Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry
This paper covers a reflective account of creating the underscore for the 2025 production of Between the Fractures, performed at the Butterfly Club in Melbourne, Australia. While the process of creating a mise-en-scéne for a two hander within a small theatre space involves multilayered praxis of aesthetic inferences (Pavis, 2003) this paper aims to provide an insider’s account into some of the creative processes that resulted in the original underscore. Drawing on an eclectic fusion of practice as research methodology, specifically Linda Candy’s reflection practice variants (Candy, 2021), the research provides insight into the decisions, references (musical and otherwise), …

Highly Oxidation-Resistant Imidazolium-Modified Catechol For Stable Wet Adhesion Under Alkaline Conditions, Kan Wang, Yue Xu, Fatemeh Razaviamri, Chunling Zhang, Zhihui Zhang, Bo Liu, Bruce P Lee
Michigan Tech Publications
Premature oxidation of catechol drastically reduces its adhesion strength and utility. This study chemically linked catechol to an imidazolium group, which functioned as an intrinsic protecting group that retarded catechol oxidation and enabled stable wet adhesion under basic conditions. Johnson–Kendall–Roberts (JKR) contact mechanical testing was performed to determine the work of adhesion (Wadh) of imidazolium-modified catechol (VIMCAT), which remained unchanged for up to 48 hours when incubated at pH 7.4. Contrastingly, Wadh values of unprotected catechol were quickly reduced by over 25% within 30 minutes. VIMCAT still retained its initial adhesion strength even after incubation at pH …
