Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Of The Asi Watershed, Southern Türkiye, Senem Teki̇n, Adolfo Quesada Román, Tolga Çan Jan 2024

Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Of The Asi Watershed, Southern Türkiye, Senem Teki̇n, Adolfo Quesada Román, Tolga Çan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Landslides constitute recurrent natural hazards worldwide with greater socioeconomic impacts in low-income places. Landslide susceptibility studies are carried out to determine the potential for landslides to occur in a region, to predict possible risks in the future and to integrate this information into sustainable planning and management strategies. Slip-type landslides occur in limited areas of less than 1% of the Asi watershed in Southern Türkiye. Therefore, meaningful estimations cannot be made with classical statistical models. So, using the maximum entropy approach (MaxEnt), a technique for estimating based on a small number of observations, a landslide susceptibility assessment was constructed. The …

The Role Of The Cdk8 Kinase Module In Maintaining Proteostasis, Stephen Willis Jan 2024

The Role Of The Cdk8 Kinase Module In Maintaining Proteostasis, Stephen Willis

Theses and Dissertations

The underlying etiology of numerous disease states results from perturbations in the maintenance of cellular proteostasis. Carcinogenesis relies on these perturbations to foster uncontrolled cell growth and eventual metastases, while neurodegenerative diseases are a consequence of such perturbations. Control of these processes occurs at numerous molecular levels, commonly starting with transcription. A key transcriptional complex that is involved is the CDK8 Kinase Module (CKM). The CKM is conserved from yeast to man, forming a tetrameric complex consisting of MED12, MED13, CDK8, and CCNC. The CKM has not only been implicated in a variety of cancers but also in a spectrum …

Mosaic Loss Of Y Chromosome Is Associated With Aging And Epithelial Injury In Chronic Kidney Disease, Parker C Wilson, Amit Verma, Yasuhiro Yoshimura, Yoshiharu Muto, Haikuo Li, Nicole P Malvin, Eryn E Dixon, Benjamin D Humphreys

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Mosaic loss of Y chromosome (LOY) is the most common chromosomal alteration in aging men. Here, we use single-cell RNA and ATAC sequencing to show that LOY is present in the kidney and increases with age and chronic kidney disease.

RESULTS: The likelihood of a cell having LOY varies depending on its location in the nephron. Cortical epithelial cell types have a greater proportion of LOY than medullary or glomerular cell types, which may reflect their proliferative history. Proximal tubule cells are the most abundant cell type in the cortex and are susceptible to hypoxic injury. A subset of …

Abstract

Summary by Jocelyn Defex.

This interview for the Bronx African American History Project was with Maria Aponte, a Non-profit organization founder, educator, author, poet, performance artist, and community arts activist. A Fordham University alum, Carlos Rico, interviewed her for the Bronx COVID-19 Oral History Project.

Aponte discusses her childhood; she grew up in “El Barrio” (Washington Heights, NY) and moved to the Bronx in the late 70s. Before becoming an activist, she was a theater actress, and she felt that her role helped to break down Latino, women, and person-of-color stereotypes in the theater. At …

The association between anemia and outcomes in glioblastoma patients is unclear. We analyzed data from 1346 histologically confirmed adult glioblastoma patients in the TriNetX Research Network. Median hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were quantified for 6 months following diagnosis and used to classify patients as anemic or non-anemic. Associations of anemia and iron supplementation of anemic patients with median overall survival (median-OS) were then studied. Among 1346 glioblastoma patients, 35.9% of male and 40.5% of female patients were classified as anemic using hemoglobin-based WHO guidelines. Among males, anemia was associated with reduced median-OS compared to matched non-anemic males using hemoglobin (HR …

Quality Improvement Project To Increase Referrals To Palliative Care For Heart Failure Patients, Stephanie D. Crawford Jan 2024

Quality Improvement Project To Increase Referrals To Palliative Care For Heart Failure Patients, Stephanie D. Crawford

Dissertations

Palliative care (PC) services include symptom management with advanced care planning (ACP) and establishment of goals of care (GOC) for patients with serious conditions, such as heart failure (HF). Literature demonstrates low hospitalist referrals to PC.

The purpose of this project was to explore if providing evidence-based information and procedural information to hospitalists on ACP and GOC would increase PC referrals for HF patients, providing these patients access to ACP and GOC by the PC team and possibly even reducing 30-day readmissions for these patients.

From Flagship To Flotilla? Findings From A Review Of Literature On Learning Spaces In Higher Education, And Education For Sustainable Development, Claire Mcavinia Jan 2024

From Flagship To Flotilla? Findings From A Review Of Literature On Learning Spaces In Higher Education, And Education For Sustainable Development, Claire Mcavinia

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

The development of physical and digital teaching and learning spaces in higher education has been the focus of attention from researchers in recent years. Teaching spaces on campus, and the campus itself, have been reconsidered in light of pedagogical, technological, political, ecological, and social changes influencing higher education over the past three decades. Spaces are historically under-researched in higher education, and the area is under-theorised with a failure to recognise space as a mediator of learning. The closure of most campuses during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted some reconsideration of the mediating role of physical and virtual learning spaces in higher …

Veterans Treatment Courts: Broadening Eligibility For Veterans Convicted Of Violent Offenses, Mark Dela Peña Jan 2024

Veterans Treatment Courts: Broadening Eligibility For Veterans Convicted Of Violent Offenses, Mark Dela Peña

Catholic University Law Review

Veterans treatment courts (VTCs) have been gaining widespread popularity as a tool to divert justice-involved veterans from the criminal justice system. While a step in the right direction, most of these courts categorically exclude violent offenders for eligibility. Many jurisdictions conflate violent offenses with serious offenses, even when many violent offenses lack any physical harm. Additionally, prosecutors wield almost unbridled discretion in determining whether or not someone is charged with an offense considered to be violent, determining VTC eligibility even before a case reaches a sentencing hearing.

This comment argues for admitting veterans convicted of violent offenses into VTCs. This …

Longitudinal Varying Coefficient Single-Index Model With Censored Covariates, Shikun Wang, Jing Ning, Ying Xu, Ya-Chen Tina Shih, Yu Shen, Liang Li

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

It is of interest to health policy research to estimate the population-averaged longitudinal medical cost trajectory from initial cancer diagnosis to death, and understand how the trajectory curve is affected by patient characteristics. This research question leads to a number of statistical challenges because the longitudinal cost data are often non-normally distributed with skewness, zero-inflation, and heteroscedasticity. The trajectory is nonlinear, and its length and shape depend on survival, which are subject to censoring. Modeling the association between multiple patient characteristics and nonlinear cost trajectory curves of varying lengths should take into consideration parsimony, flexibility, and interpretation. We propose a …

A Desirable Advancement But Not Without Concern For Black Blood Sequences: Vessel Wall Imaging May Not Be Blindly Done, Subhendra N. Sarkar

Publications and Research

Time of flight (TOF) gradient echo magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a bright lumen method that is supposed to be simpler but is not free of challenges. Post-treatment, tricky geometry, Gd build up and high fields pose challenges and practice variation making some special applications of even the well-developed bright blood method questionable in treated AVMs as discussed in a prior editorial (Sarkar Eur Rad, 2023). In this editorial another, perhaps more important (pseudo-steady state for black blood angiography) is discussed. It has been agreed upon that assessment of vessel wall integrity, particularly plaques and other arterial wall diseases is …

Accounting For Network Noise In Graph-Guided Bayesian Modeling Of Structured High-Dimensional Data, Wenrui Li, Changgee Chang, Suprateek Kundu, Qi Long

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

There is a growing body of literature on knowledge-guided statistical learning methods for analysis of structured high-dimensional data (such as genomic and transcriptomic data) that can incorporate knowledge of underlying networks derived from functional genomics and functional proteomics. These methods have been shown to improve variable selection and prediction accuracy and yield more interpretable results. However, these methods typically use graphs extracted from existing databases or rely on subject matter expertise, which are known to be incomplete and may contain false edges. To address this gap, we propose a graph-guided Bayesian modeling framework to account for network noise in regression …

Action-Outcome Delays Modulate The Temporal Expansion Of Intended Outcomes, Rohan R Donapati, Anuj Shukla, Raju S Bapi Jan 2024

Action-Outcome Delays Modulate The Temporal Expansion Of Intended Outcomes, Rohan R Donapati, Anuj Shukla, Raju S Bapi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The phenomenon of intentional binding pertains to the perceived connection between a voluntary action and its anticipated result. When an individual intends an outcome, it appears to subjectively extend in time due to a pre-activation of the intended result, particularly evident at shorter action-outcome delays. However, there is a concern that the operationalisation of intention might have led to a mixed interpretation of the outcome expansion attributed to the pre-activation of intention, given the sensitivity of time perception and intentional binding to external cues that could accelerate the realisation of expectations. To investigate the expansion dynamics of an intended outcome, …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Computational models of the cardiovascular system allow for a detailed and quantitative investigation of both physiological and pathological conditions, thanks to their ability to combine clinical-possibly patient-specific-data with physical knowledge of the processes underlying the heart function. These models have been increasingly employed in clinical practice to understand pathological mechanisms and their progression, design medical devices, support clinicians in improving therapies. Hinging upon a long-year experience in cardiovascular modeling, we have recently constructed a computational multi-physics and multi-scale integrated model of the heart for the investigation of its physiological function, the analysis of pathological conditions, and to …
