Hygrothermal Risk Assessment Of External Wall Insulation Retrofit To Non-Traditional Wall Types In An Irish Context, Using The Glaser Method And A Heat, Air And Moisture Transient Model, Gareth Mcdonnell, Joseph Little

Articles

The Climate Action Plan 2019 targets the low-energy retrofit of 500,000 existing Irish homes before 2030.1 Up to 80 per cent of building failures can be attributed to moisture risks.2 The literature indicated that external wall insulation (EWI, ETICS) failures are mostly due to moisture ingress at junctions and interfaces. A hygrothermal risk assessment of EWI on three walls with rendered concrete/concrete blockwork/cavity walls in Dublin, Belfast and Belmullet was undertaken using transient numerical simulation and the Glaser method. The guidance, common practice indicates a preference for Glaser. The initial simulation results were compared to assess the appropriateness of Glaser. …

Faculty Research 2024

For over a century, early researchers sought to study biological organisms in a laboratory setting, leading to the generation of both in vitro and in vivo model systems. Patient-derived models of cancer (PDMCs) have more recently come to the forefront of preclinical cancer models and are even finding their way into clinical practice as part of functional precision medicine programs. The PDMC Consortium, supported by the Division of Cancer Biology in the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, seeks to understand the biological principles that govern the various PDMC behaviors, particularly in response to perturbagens, such as …

The All of Us (AoU) initiative aims to sequence the genomes of over one million Americans from diverse ethnic backgrounds to improve personalized medical care. In a recent technical pilot, we compare the performance of traditional short-read sequencing with long-read sequencing in a small cohort of samples from the HapMap project and two AoU control samples representing eight datasets. Our analysis reveals substantial differences in the ability of these technologies to accurately sequence complex medically relevant genes, particularly in terms of gene coverage and pathogenic variant identification. We also consider the advantages and challenges of using low coverage sequencing to …

Miniaturized Fluorescence Ph Sensor With Assembly Free Ball Lens On A Tapered Multimode Optical Fiber, Bohong Zhang, Farhan Mumtaz, Muhammad Roman, Dinesh Reddy Alla, Rex E. Gerald, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In biochemistry, the absence of a compact, assembly-free pH sensor with high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio has been a persistent hurdle in achieving accurate pH measurements in real time, particularly in complex liquid environments. This manuscript introduces what we believe to be a novel solution in the form of a miniaturized pH sensor utilizing an assembly-free ball lens on a tapered multimode optical fiber (TMMF), offering the potential to revolutionize pH sensing in biochemical applications. A multimode optical fiber (MMF) was subjected to tapering processes, leading to the creation of an ultra-thin needle-like structure with a cross-sectional diameter of about …

Typology And Interiority Of Cohousing In Europe 1981–2021, Virginia De Jorge-Huertas, Justo De Jorge-Moreno

Interiority

This work aims to research the connection between cohousing architecture and interiority. For this purpose, the analyses are structured in two phases. The first consists of the characterisation and identification of underlying typologies of European cohousing projects in the last three decades, 1981–2022. The second phase consists of the connection between the interiority concepts (in terms of planimetry, typology, spatial syntax, and interior spaces) and the cohousing architecture in the case studies selected from the first phase, which made it possible to compare cohousing projects and propose future strategies. The research identifies a typology with two clusters of cohousing projects …

Cultural Humility Training With A Simulated Therapy Client: A Qualitative Case Study, Justine Piontek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A qualitative case study explored seven counseling psychology doctoral trainees’ experiences in a small-group training with a simulated therapy client of a marginalized identity, and more specifically, the trainees’ perceptions of how the interaction with the simulated client influenced their cultural humility development. The simulation training was designed to mirror a therapy intake and the case profile reflected an African American client presenting with race-based stress from ongoing discrimination across several life domains. A thematic analysis was performed on the training de-brief focus group yielding five themes: (1) trainees’ impressions (2) trainees’ affective responses (3) comparisons to clinical work with …

Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Gambling Warning Message Recall And Recognition, Tori Horn Jan 2024

Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Gambling Warning Message Recall And Recognition, Tori Horn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Warning messages inform consumers of potential risks associated with product use and reduce the likelihood of excessive engagement in risky behaviors. Evidence supports that such messages can educate consumers and reduce gambling. Questions remain about how acute alcohol consumption may interfere with message reception and retention. Memory literature suggests that while alcohol consumption may not influence general message reception it may impact the recall of specific details of the messages. To examine this effect, participants (n = 82) were randomly assigned to consume alcoholic beverages (target blood alcohol concentrations of 0.06-0.08%) or juice. Participants then gambled on slot machines in …

The Effects Of Resilience And Optimism In Maternal Role Attainment After Six To Twelve Months Postpartum In Women Hospitalized For Pregnancy Complications, Marianne Allen Jan 2024

The Effects Of Resilience And Optimism In Maternal Role Attainment After Six To Twelve Months Postpartum In Women Hospitalized For Pregnancy Complications, Marianne Allen

Dissertations

Each year in the US, approximately 1,200,000 pregnant women are hospitalized on bed rest with the intent to improve pregnancy outcomes. However, antepartum bed rest is not benign and may contribute to physical debilitation, postpartum depression (PPD), impaired maternal role attainment (MRA), and altered maternal-infant attachment. There are gaps in the literature about the effects of resilience, optimism, and PPD on MRA and the effects of resilience and optimism on PPD at six to 12 months postpartum. Although the effects of resilience and optimism have been studied in general adult populations, few studies have considered resilience and optimism as protectors …

The hippocampus is pivotal in integrating emotional processing, learning, memory, and reward-related behaviors. The dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) is particularly crucial for episodic, spatial, and associative memory, and has been shown to be necessary for context- and cue-associated reward behaviors. The nucleus accumbens (NAc), a central structure in the mesolimbic reward pathway, integrates the salience of aversive and rewarding stimuli. Despite extensive research on dHPC→NAc direct projections, their sufficiency in driving reinforcement and reward-related behavior remains to be determined. Our study establishes that activating excitatory neurons in the dHPC is sufficient to induce reinforcing behaviors through its direct projections to the …

OBJECTIVE: The healthcare burden of alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is increasing. ARLD and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is best managed by reduction or cessation of alcohol use, but effective treatments are lacking. We tested whether people with ARLD and AUD admitted to hospital could be recruited to and retained in a trial of Functional Imagery Training (FIT), a psychological therapy that uses mental imagery to reduce alcohol craving. We conducted a multicentre randomised pilot trial of treatment as usual (TAU) versus FIT+TAU in people admitted to hospital with ARLD and AUD.

DESIGN: Participants were randomised to TAU (a single session …

Landslide Susceptibility Assessment Of The Asi Watershed, Southern Türkiye, Senem Teki̇n, Adolfo Quesada Román, Tolga Çan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Landslides constitute recurrent natural hazards worldwide with greater socioeconomic impacts in low-income places. Landslide susceptibility studies are carried out to determine the potential for landslides to occur in a region, to predict possible risks in the future and to integrate this information into sustainable planning and management strategies. Slip-type landslides occur in limited areas of less than 1% of the Asi watershed in Southern Türkiye. Therefore, meaningful estimations cannot be made with classical statistical models. So, using the maximum entropy approach (MaxEnt), a technique for estimating based on a small number of observations, a landslide susceptibility assessment was constructed. The …

The Role Of The Cdk8 Kinase Module In Maintaining Proteostasis, Stephen Willis Jan 2024

The Role Of The Cdk8 Kinase Module In Maintaining Proteostasis, Stephen Willis

Theses and Dissertations

The underlying etiology of numerous disease states results from perturbations in the maintenance of cellular proteostasis. Carcinogenesis relies on these perturbations to foster uncontrolled cell growth and eventual metastases, while neurodegenerative diseases are a consequence of such perturbations. Control of these processes occurs at numerous molecular levels, commonly starting with transcription. A key transcriptional complex that is involved is the CDK8 Kinase Module (CKM). The CKM is conserved from yeast to man, forming a tetrameric complex consisting of MED12, MED13, CDK8, and CCNC. The CKM has not only been implicated in a variety of cancers but also in a spectrum …

Mosaic Loss Of Y Chromosome Is Associated With Aging And Epithelial Injury In Chronic Kidney Disease, Parker C Wilson, Amit Verma, Yasuhiro Yoshimura, Yoshiharu Muto, Haikuo Li, Nicole P Malvin, Eryn E Dixon, Benjamin D Humphreys

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Mosaic loss of Y chromosome (LOY) is the most common chromosomal alteration in aging men. Here, we use single-cell RNA and ATAC sequencing to show that LOY is present in the kidney and increases with age and chronic kidney disease.

RESULTS: The likelihood of a cell having LOY varies depending on its location in the nephron. Cortical epithelial cell types have a greater proportion of LOY than medullary or glomerular cell types, which may reflect their proliferative history. Proximal tubule cells are the most abundant cell type in the cortex and are susceptible to hypoxic injury. A subset of …

The association between anemia and outcomes in glioblastoma patients is unclear. We analyzed data from 1346 histologically confirmed adult glioblastoma patients in the TriNetX Research Network. Median hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were quantified for 6 months following diagnosis and used to classify patients as anemic or non-anemic. Associations of anemia and iron supplementation of anemic patients with median overall survival (median-OS) were then studied. Among 1346 glioblastoma patients, 35.9% of male and 40.5% of female patients were classified as anemic using hemoglobin-based WHO guidelines. Among males, anemia was associated with reduced median-OS compared to matched non-anemic males using hemoglobin (HR …

Quality Improvement Project To Increase Referrals To Palliative Care For Heart Failure Patients, Stephanie D. Crawford

Dissertations

Palliative care (PC) services include symptom management with advanced care planning (ACP) and establishment of goals of care (GOC) for patients with serious conditions, such as heart failure (HF). Literature demonstrates low hospitalist referrals to PC.

The purpose of this project was to explore if providing evidence-based information and procedural information to hospitalists on ACP and GOC would increase PC referrals for HF patients, providing these patients access to ACP and GOC by the PC team and possibly even reducing 30-day readmissions for these patients.

From Flagship To Flotilla? Findings From A Review Of Literature On Learning Spaces In Higher Education, And Education For Sustainable Development, Claire Mcavinia

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

The development of physical and digital teaching and learning spaces in higher education has been the focus of attention from researchers in recent years. Teaching spaces on campus, and the campus itself, have been reconsidered in light of pedagogical, technological, political, ecological, and social changes influencing higher education over the past three decades. Spaces are historically under-researched in higher education, and the area is under-theorised with a failure to recognise space as a mediator of learning. The closure of most campuses during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted some reconsideration of the mediating role of physical and virtual learning spaces in higher …

Veterans Treatment Courts: Broadening Eligibility For Veterans Convicted Of Violent Offenses, Mark Dela Peña Jan 2024

Veterans Treatment Courts: Broadening Eligibility For Veterans Convicted Of Violent Offenses, Mark Dela Peña

Catholic University Law Review

Veterans treatment courts (VTCs) have been gaining widespread popularity as a tool to divert justice-involved veterans from the criminal justice system. While a step in the right direction, most of these courts categorically exclude violent offenders for eligibility. Many jurisdictions conflate violent offenses with serious offenses, even when many violent offenses lack any physical harm. Additionally, prosecutors wield almost unbridled discretion in determining whether or not someone is charged with an offense considered to be violent, determining VTC eligibility even before a case reaches a sentencing hearing.

This comment argues for admitting veterans convicted of violent offenses into VTCs. This …
