Vectra: Medication Cart System Designed For Nurses, Chris Dimovski
Vectra: Medication Cart System Designed For Nurses, Chris Dimovski
Theses
Medication administration is a critical phase of patient care where errors are most likely to occur, often contributing to adverse drug events and increasing risk to patient safety. At the same time, rising levels of nurse burnout highlight the growing cognitive demands placed on healthcare professionals. Although systems such as medication carts, digital records, and safety protocols are intended to reduce errors, they operate independently rather than as a connected system. This leaves nurses responsible for connecting each step, relying on memory and constant adjustment throughout the workflow. This thesis focuses on the medication administration phase and looks at how …
Asl Language Development And Interpreting Instruction: A Nationwide Study Of American Sign Language Interpreter Education Programs With Comparison To Spoken‑Language Interpreter/Translation Education, Alianna Giudice
Theses
Interpreter training programs in the United States vary in how they structure language development and interpreting instruction, with particularly stark differences between American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter training programs (ITPs) and spoken‑language interpreting and translation programs. In many ASL ITPs, students begin interpreting coursework before achieving foundational fluency, resulting in language acquisition and interpreting skill development occurring concurrently. In contrast, spoken‑language programs typically require incoming students to demonstrate functional fluency prior to beginning interpreting training. These structural differences may overwhelm ASL learners, constrain their linguistic development, and contribute to the graduation of interpreters who are not yet prepared to meet …
Topological Perspective On Temporal Climate Networks, Daniel Oleynikov
Topological Perspective On Temporal Climate Networks, Daniel Oleynikov
Theses
Networks are highly effective tools for analyzing the dynamics of Earth’s climate system. In this approach, nodes represent geographical locations and edges represent correlations or causal relationships with respect to climate fields, such as air and sea surface temperatures. We extend this technique by integrating it with topological data analysis (TDA), which shifts the focus from pairwise relationships—typical of conventional network methods—to higher-order interactions among geographic locations. Through techniques such as persistent homology and simplicial distributions, we investigate how the global climate dynamics—summarized by this representation—have evolved over the last 75 years. Additionally, we evaluate changes in oceanic connectivity with …
Material Selection In The Mountain West: A Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (Mcda) Based Approach For Architects, Melissa Bach
Material Selection In The Mountain West: A Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (Mcda) Based Approach For Architects, Melissa Bach
Theses
With modern advancements in technology and the expansion of a globally interconnected network, architects have access to a large range of building materials. Increasing public concern for the environment has prompted architects to prioritize materials that are more sustainable, but varying definitions of sustainability, coupled with unclear guidelines for material selection, repeatedly lead to uncertainty and decision-making challenges within the profession. To address this, a comprehensive methodology such as Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) is needed for the material selection processes. Furthermore, a gap in the literature demonstrates that the application of MCDA for material selection in the Mountain West region …

Quantifying Exterior Ecological Performance In Biomimicry, Bioclimatic, And Biophilic Architecture: A Comparative Framework Across Climatic Zones, Ruqayyah Siamwala
Theses
Historically, sustainability research in architecture has focused on interior comfort and operational energy efficiency, leaving the ecological performance of the immediate building façade relatively unexplored. By creating a comparison framework to assess the performance of biomimetic, bioclimatic, and biophilic architecture under external ecological conditions across four climatic zones—hot-humid, cold-humid, hot-dry, and cold-dry—this thesis closes that gap. Using quantitative data such as NDVI, land surface temperature, PM2.5, NO2, infiltration rates, and species count in addition to qualitative analysis of these three architectural strategies at the building-site interface, twelve case studies are evaluated against four ecological indicator groups: air quality, soil quality, …
The Efficacy Of Ethical Data: An Analytical Study By, Lamar Gebara
The Efficacy Of Ethical Data: An Analytical Study By, Lamar Gebara
Theses
As artificial intelligence and machine learning models become increasingly embedded in decision-making systems across industries, questions about the ethical sourcing of data have grown more pressing; model performance relies heavily on vast, diverse datasets, many of which are harvested without consent, transparency, or equitable representation. This study aims to compare analytics outcomes (accuracy, bias, fairness, and explainability) between ethically sourced and unethically sourced datasets. Using CRISP-DM methodology, the study will develop matched classification models on both dataset types, evaluate their performance and fairness using open-source tools such as Fairlearn and AIF360, and assess broader implications for trust, accountability, and regulatory …

Development Of A Compartmental Metabolism Rate Model For Digestive Oligosaccharides Transformation To Glucose In The Human Proximal Small Intestine, Edesiri Albert Ukusajuya
Development Of A Compartmental Metabolism Rate Model For Digestive Oligosaccharides Transformation To Glucose In The Human Proximal Small Intestine, Edesiri Albert Ukusajuya
All Theses
Excess postprandial glucose remains a significant metabolic concern, particularly for individuals with impaired glucose regulation. In the proximal small intestine (PSI), dietary oligosaccharides are enzymatically hydrolyzed to glucose, which is subsequently absorbed into the bloodstream. However, direct measurement of these coupled digestion-absorption processes in vivo is limited, making in silico mechanistic modeling a practical approach for analyzing system behavior under controlled conditions.
In this work, a time-dependent compartmental model was developed to describe oligosaccharide/starch hydrolysis and glucose absorption in the PSI. The intestine is represented as a series of continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) segments, where each segment captured temporal concentration …

Belowground Consequences Of Herbivory In Tomatoes And Cucumbers And Its Lasting Effects, Anthony Ignacio Barrera
Belowground Consequences Of Herbivory In Tomatoes And Cucumbers And Its Lasting Effects, Anthony Ignacio Barrera
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Plants recruit soil microorganisms to help mediate biotic stressors such as herbivory, forming dynamic communities in the rhizosphere known as the root microbiome. This study investigated whether artificial herbivory could induce shifts in the root microbiome of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and whether those shifts could be transferred to subsequent plants as a soil legacy effect. Plants were grown in sterilized or non-sterilized soil with or without simulated herbivory across two experimental phases, with Phase 2 plants receiving inoculum conditioned by Phase 1 plants. Bacterial community composition was assessed via 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and analyzed using …
Stromal Interaction Molecule (Stim) Proteins In Microglia And The Impact On Store-Operated Calcium Entry (Soce) And Spinal Cord Injury Recovery, Norah G. Hill
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
In spinal cord injury (SCI), worsening functional outcomes are largely because of secondary injury processes and prolonged chronic inflammation. A major contributor of secondary injury is overload of intracellular calcium, causing neuronal overexcitation and persistent inflammatory responses. One of the primary mediators of calcium entry into the cell is store-operated calcium entry (SOCE). In SOCE, sensors detecting calcium depletion from the endoplasmic reticulum stores are called STIM proteins (1-2). When calcium is low in the cell, STIM proteins will activate Orai channels to open, allowing for the influx of calcium into the cell. The purpose of this study was to …
Efficacy Of Tick Sampling Methods In Urban Parks., Emma Staples
Efficacy Of Tick Sampling Methods In Urban Parks., Emma Staples
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Amblyomma americanum (Lone star ticks) are parasites and vectors of diseases, including Ehrlichiosis. Questions remain about how an urban environment affects the host-seeking behavior of A. americanum across different life stages and thus the efficacy of different sampling methods. We sought to compare the efficacy of different sampling methods on A. americanum ticks in urban parks during the fall season and explore how the urban heat island (UHI) effect may impact each method’s efficacy. We hypothesized that, where the UHI effect is weaker near the city’s periphery, the CO2 trapping method would collect more A. americanum adults and nymphs …
The Influence Of Valence On Action Control: A Comparison Of Simon Effects In The Extrinsic Affective Simon Task (East) And The Spatial Simon Task, Yaara Aleissa
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
People adjust their thoughts and actions in response to a changing environment every day and emotions may influence these actions. Understanding how emotion impacts action control in situations where emotion is central to the action (task-relevant) compared to when it is present in the environment as distracting information (task-irrelevant) is essential. Currently it is unclear when emotion most significantly modulates action control. This study seeks to compare how valence (positive versus negative emotion) impacts action control performance when valence is task-relevant and task-irrelevant by using two modified versions of the Simon conflict task.
The Simon task is a paradigm to …

Effects Of A Passive Assistive Hamstring Device On Overground Running Kinematics And Hamstring Activation., Quinn Castner
All Theses
Hamstring strain injuries are among the most common and recurring injuries in sports, occurring most often during the terminal swing phase of gait. Despite progress in rehabilitation, the incidence of injury has only increased, suggesting a need for a novel intervention. We designed a passive, assistive, wearable device with two specific criteria in mind: to offload the hamstrings during running, and do so without hindering normal kinematic patterns. The device consists of an adjustable elastic band anchored proximally at the waist and distally just above the ankle joint center. It stretches and shortens with the hamstrings, providing passive hip extension …

Comparing Two Emergent Literacy Screeners: The Reading House And Star Early Literacy In A Florida Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (Vpk) Program, Jaime D. Swenbeck
Poster Presentations
Emergent Literacy (EL) refers to the foundational skills that develop from birth through the preschool years and support later reading success (National Early Literacy Panel, 2008; Levy et al., 2006). These include basic Print Concepts, Phonological Awareness, Vocabulary, Letter-Sound Knowledge, and Emergent Writing (Piasta et al., 2021; Puranik et al., 2011). Because they serve as predictors for later literacy success, accurate identification of children struggling to learn EL skills is important. There are various types of tools, ranging from screening tools to diagnostic assessments, that measure children’s EL skills, with assessment times ranging from 10-15 minutes to 45-60 minutes. In …
