Fiscal Administration Versus Fiscal Policy: An Investigation Into The Determinants Of The Real Tax Revenues From Consumption Tax In Egypt, Nariman Zahran

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis highlights the importance of fiscal administration relative to fiscal policies. It presents a broad view of the developments in both fields and tests their effects on real revenues from consumption tax in Egypt from fiscal year 2002 till 2023. It initially explains the proxies used for fiscal administration: the size of the tax base and the collection lag. The major fiscal policy change in Egypt was shifting from sales tax to Value-Added Tax (VAT) during fiscal year 2016/17. The effects of fiscal administration and fiscal policy on real tax revenues will be assessed using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag …

Customer Churn Prediction Based On Sentiment Score, Shadha Al-Safi Feb 2024

Customer Churn Prediction Based On Sentiment Score, Shadha Al-Safi

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the telecommunications industry has witnessed intensified competition, wherein the expense associated with acquiring new consumers exceeds that of sustaining existing ones. Consequently, predicting customer churn prior to its occurrence has become essential. This study proposes a sentiment-based customer churn prediction model in which the sentiment of customers is predicted using Random Forest. Subsequently, the derived sentiment predictions are combined with additional features to predict customer churn. The ensemble technique is applied to predict churn, consisting of K-nearest neighbors, Support Vector Machines, Random Forest as base learners, and Multiple Layer Perceptron as a meta learner. Moreover, mutual information …

Psychology Faculty Publications

Persistent somatic symptoms (PSS) are common in all fields of medicine. Current classification systems for mental disorders in this field, i.e. Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD; DSM-5) or Bodily Distress Disorder (BDD; ICD-11), now stress the relevance of psychological features associated with the physical complaints. It is well known that psychological criteria are among the relevant risk factors for the development and/or worsening of persistent physical symptoms, however, the selected diagnostic criteria remain subject to debate. Numerous psychological concepts have been studied and discussed in the scientific field. However, empirical evidence remains scattered, individual factors have not been reviewed systematically, and …

Despite the central role of human leukocyte antigen class I (HLA-I) in tumor neoantigen presentation, quantitative determination of presentation capacity remains elusive. Based on a pooled pan-cancer genomic dataset of 885 patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), we developed a score integrating the binding affinity of neoantigens to HLA-I, as well as HLA-I allele divergence, termed the HLA tumor-Antigen Presentation Score (HAPS). Patients with a high HAPS were more likely to experience survival benefit following ICI treatment. Analysis of the tumor microenvironment indicated that the antigen presentation pathway was enriched in patients with a high HAPS. Finally, we built …

Neuromodulation through implantable pulse generators (IPGs) represents an important treatment approach for neurological disorders. While the field has observed the success of state-of-the-art interventions, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) or responsive neurostimulation (RNS), implantable systems face various technical challenges, including the restriction of recording from a limited number of brain sites, power management, and limited external access to the assessed neural data in a continuous fashion. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time in this study, we investigated the feasibility of recording human intracranial EEG (iEEG) using a benchtop version of the Brain Interchange (BIC) unit …

Eosinophils Restrain Humoral Alloimmunity After Lung Transplantation, Zhongcheng Mei, Yuriko Terada, Yuhei Yokoyama, Andrew E. Gelman, Daniel Kreisel, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

While the function of many leukocytes in transplant biology has been well defined, the role of eosinophils is controversial and remains poorly explored. Conflicting data exist regarding eosinophils' role in alloimmunity. Due to their prevalence in the lung, and their defined role in other pulmonary pathologies such as asthma, we set out to explore the role of eosinophils in the long-term maintenance of the lung allograft. We noted that depletion of eosinophils results in the generation of donor-specific antibodies. Eosinophil depletion increased memory B cell, plasma cell, and antibody-secreting cell differentiation and resulted in de novo generation of follicular germinal …

A Tale Of Two Low-Income, First-Generation Engineering Students: Well-Being, Belonging, And The Role Of Chosen Family, Justin C. Major

First-Generation Symposium

Belonging has been identified as an important, if not the most important, factor impacting the success of college students, especially (multi)marginalized students in engineering programs. Well-being and belonging are deeply entwined, helping to explain how the strength of students affinities lead them to feel a sense of true happiness that guide their holistic success. In this presentation, I present two differing narrative stories from Samantha and Rocky, two non-white, low-income, first-generation women in engineering. At the time of their narratives, both women were in the fourth year of their engineering degrees; however, Samantha was graduating and Rocky was not. In …

Acute Effects In Postural Sway As A Result Of Self-Myofascial Release On The Lower Extremities In Collegiate Female Athletes., Mackenzie Melton, Andrew Shim, Monica Dial, Guilherme M. Cesar

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(1): 274-284, 2024. Myofascial release is a popular therapy technique used to manipulate connective muscle tissue to become more pliable. The maintenance of body posture relies on mechanoreceptors located in connective tissue, thus manipulation of connective tissue should affect postural control. The effects of this phenomenon have not been well studied, leaving room for this investigation. PURPOSE: To observe if postural sway scores changed before and after foam rolling proximal (quadriceps and hamstrings) in comparison to distal (calves) muscles. METHODS: Thirty-six, college-aged female athletes (age 20.39 ± 0.25 years, mass 68.70 ± 1.97 kg, height …

Revolutionizing Esophageal Atresia Treatment: Newly Approved Technique To Bypass Surgery, Gabriella Llorente

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare congenital defect where the esophagus, during the early stages of development, does not fully form. This causes there to be no connection between the oral cavity and the stomach. Complications with EA treatment come into play when there is a long gap between the two segments of the esophagus, meaning they cannot simply be sewed together using anastomosis. A new device called Flourish has recently been approved by the FDA and may be a new and more humanitarian approach to solving long gap esophageal atresia in infants.
