Sustainability Of Biogas Production From Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste And Animal Manure, Sharath Kumar Ankathi, Utkarsh S. Chaudhari, Robert Handler, David R. Shonnard

Michigan Tech Publications

Anaerobic digestion (AD) involves a set of microbiological reactions and physio-chemical processes to generate biogas, a mixture of predominantly CH4 and CO2. It is commercialized globally; however, AD has limited commercial applications in the U.S. compared to other regions of the world. The main objective of this article is to review different studies on socio-economic and environmental aspects and policies of biogas/biomethane production and to focus on resource availability. The key outcome from this review shows that the anaerobic digestion of food waste and animal manure has great potential to achieve economic and environmental benefits compared to other waste management …

A Primary Purpose Problem: State V. Tsosie, Lana Elledge Feb 2024

A Primary Purpose Problem: State V. Tsosie, Lana Elledge

New Mexico Law Review

In Crawford v. Washington, the United States Supreme Court held that if statements “were made under circumstances which would lead an objective witness reasonably to believe that the statements would be available for use at a later trial,” then a defendant has the right to confront and cross examine the witness. However, the Court’s subsequent retreat from this ruling and introduction of the primary purpose test in a later decision, created a flawed federal analysis, as seen in State v. Tsosie. In Tsosie, the New Mexico Supreme Court applied the primary purpose test to determine whether statements of the declarant, …

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) pose a significant threat to individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM), such as lower limb amputation and severe morbidity. Bioengineered skin substitutes (BSS) are alternatives to traditional interventions for treating DFUs, but their efficacy compared to standard wound care (SWC) or other treatment types, such as allografts, remains unknown. A scoping review of human studies was conducted to identify current approaches in the treatment of DFUs using BSS as compared with other treatment options. Systematic searches in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were conducted to identify comparative studies that enrolled 10 or more patients and …

The Myth Of Anonymity: De-Identified Data As Legal Fiction, Elodie Currier Stoffel Feb 2024

The Myth Of Anonymity: De-Identified Data As Legal Fiction, Elodie Currier Stoffel

New Mexico Law Review

The unregulated collection, processing, and sale of consumer data has led to a plethora of social and legal issues. As regulators attempt to catch up with the “move fast and break things” ethos of tech innovation, “de-identified” or “anonymized” data has remained broadly unprotected. However, computer science literature shows us that “de-identified” data is a legal fiction. This Article examines the source of the de-identification fiction, analyzes the definitions in new state laws which attempt to close the loophole, tracks potential harms, and proposes a legislative solution which aims to ameliorate some of the legal fictions’ negative impacts. Part I …

Rule 11 Sanctions For Bad Discovery Advocacies, Jeffrey A. Parness, Alexandria N. Short Feb 2024

Rule 11 Sanctions For Bad Discovery Advocacies, Jeffrey A. Parness, Alexandria N. Short

New Mexico Law Review

For over eighty years, Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure has authorized sanctions to combat frivolous legal arguments and factual allegations in some paper presentations. Since 1993, however, the rule has not applied to discovery. This article demonstrates how Rule 11 should be used to deter advocacy based on discovery that has “gone bad” since its initial disclosure. Disciplinary actions, malpractice claims, the discovery rules, and even the inherent sanctioning authority of the court are insufficient to deter lawyers from relying on now-bad discovery papers. Rule 11 would hold lawyers to a duty of reasonable inquiry before …

Growing Through Adversity: The Relation Of Early Childhood Educator Post-Traumatic Growth To Young Children’S Executive Function, Caron A. C. Clark, Holly Hatton-Bowers, Kimia Akhavein, Sarah Rasby, Gilbert R. Parra Feb 2024

Growing Through Adversity: The Relation Of Early Childhood Educator Post-Traumatic Growth To Young Children’S Executive Function, Caron A. C. Clark, Holly Hatton-Bowers, Kimia Akhavein, Sarah Rasby, Gilbert R. Parra

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Introduction: Early childhood educators (ECEs) play a critical role in supporting the development of young children’s executive functions (EF). EF, in turn, underpins lifelong resilience and well-being. Unfortunately, many ECEs report adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) that may compound high stress levels associated with an emotionally and physically demanding profession. ACEs have well-established negative implications for adult well-being and may dampen ECEs’ capacities to engage in emotionally responsive interactions with children. However, many individuals who experience ACEs also report post-traumatic growth experiences that foster empathy, self-determination, and resilience. Such post-traumatic growth may equip teachers with skills to engage in responsive …

Use Of Crispr Interference For Efficient And Rapid Gene Inactivation In Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Peng Zhou, Bibek G C, Flynn Stolte, Chenggang Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Gene inactivation by creating in-frame deletion mutations in Fusobacterium nucleatum is time consuming, and most fusobacterial strains are genetically intractable. Addressing these problems, we introduced a riboswitch-based inducible CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) system. This system employs the nuclease-inactive Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9 protein (dCas9), specifically guided to the gene of interest by a constantly expressed single-guide RNA (sgRNA). Mechanistically, this dCas9-sgRNA complex serves as an insurmountable roadblock for RNA polymerase, thus repressing the target gene transcription. Leveraging this system, we first examined two non-essential genes, ftsX and radD, which are pivotal for fusobacterial cytokinesis and coaggregation. Upon adding the inducer, theophylline, …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Mesenteric ischemia is a challenging condition characterized by insufficient blood perfusion to the mesentery and, consequently, intestinal tissues that continues to perplex clinicians. Despite its low prevalence, the condition’s variable clinical presentation and elusive radiographic diagnosis can delay life-saving interventions in the acute setting and deteriorate the quality of life of patients when left undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Purpose: Review and summarize recent diagnostic updates and emergent intervention strategies for acute and chronic mesenteric ischemia. Methods: A narrative review of all relevant studies from January 2022 through September 2023. Results: A total of 11 studies from MEDLINE, supplemented with 44 studies …

Predicting Lemna Growth Based On Climate Change And Eutrophication In Temperate Freshwater Drainage Ditches, Jared Feller, Mark Taylor, Paul Henry Lunt

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Somerset Levels and Moors, UK is an area of high conservation value, including nationally and internationally protected wetland sites. Duckweed (Lemna) mats in the Somerset Levels and Moors are increasingly common and are an indication of hyper-eutrophication. Duckweed mats can contribute to increased management burdens and decreases in biodiversity. Research suggests duckweed will thrive in temperate regions as the climate warms. This study investigated the impact of climate warming and eutrophication on duckweed growth in the Somerset Levels and Moors using a previously published model to simulate duckweed growth from the years of 2020–2080. Simulated local climate change projections …

Bioinformatics Characterization Of Variants Of Uncertain Significance In Pediatric Sensorineural Hearing Loss, Sloane Clay, Adele Evans, Regina Zambrano, David Otohinoyi, Chindo Hicks, Fern Tsien

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction: Rapid advancements in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics tools have allowed physicians to obtain genetic testing results in a more rapid, cost-effective, and comprehensive manner than ever before. Around 50% of pediatric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) cases are due to a genetic etiology, thus physicians regularly utilize targeted sequencing panels that identify variants in genes related to SNHL. These panels allow for early detection of pathogenic variants which allows physicians to provide anticipatory guidance to families. Molecular testing does not always reveal a clear etiology due to the presence of multigenic variants with varying classifications, including the presence …

The very low success rates of grant applications to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are highly detrimental to the progress of science and the careers of scientists. The peer review process that evaluates proposals has been claimed arbitrarily to be the best there is. This consensus system, however, has never been evaluated scientifically against an alternative. Here we delineate the 15 major problems with the peer review process. We challenge the Science Advisor to the President, and the leadership of NIH, NSF, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and other funding agencies throughout …

Protein-level immunodominance patterns against Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), the aetiologic agent of Kaposi sarcoma (KS), have been revealed from serological probing of whole protein arrays, however, the epitopes that underlie these patterns have not been defined. We recently demonstrated the utility of phage display in high-resolution linear epitope mapping of the KSHV latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA/ORF73). Here, a VirScan phage immunoprecipitation and sequencing approach, employing a library of 1,988 KSHV proteome-derived peptides, was used to quantify the breadth and magnitude of responses of 59 sub-Saharan African KS patients and 22 KSHV-infected asymptomatic individuals (ASY), and ultimately to support an application …

The Impact Of Iron Supplementation On The Preterm Neonatal Gut Microbiome: A Pilot Study, Matthew Van Ormer, Maranda Thompson, Melissa K. Thoene, Jean-Jack Riethoven, Sathish Kumar Natarajan, Ann Anderson-Berry

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Objective The gastrointestinal microbiome in preterm infants exhibits significant influence on optimal outcomes–with dysbiosis shown to substantially increase the risk of the life-threatening necrotizing enterocolitis. Iron is a vital nutrient especially during the perinatal window of rapid hemoglobin production, tissue growth, and foundational neurodevelopment. However, excess colonic iron exhibits potent oxidation capacity and alters the gut microbiome–potentially facilitating the proliferation of pathological bacterial strains. Breastfed preterm infants routinely receive iron supplementation starting 14 days after delivery and are highly vulnerable to morbidities associated with gastrointestinal dysbiosis. Therefore, we set out to determine if routine iron supplementation alters the preterm gut …

A number of the research goals were motivated by questions raised by residents of Fairbanks, Alaska, where the study was held. This paper describes the measurement strategies and the conditions encountered during the January and February 2022 field experiment, and reports early examples of how the measurements addressed research goals, particularly those of …

How Physicians’ Perceptions Of Satisfaction And Morale Affect Retention, Ernest George Britton Feb 2024

How Physicians’ Perceptions Of Satisfaction And Morale Affect Retention, Ernest George Britton

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Physician turnover affects care delivery and contributes to costs, emphasizing the need for retention to minimize unnecessary costs of hiring, training, and lost productivity among healthcare organizations. Healthcare leaders tend to be concerned about the negative affects that physician turnover has on patient care, profitability, and organizational viability. The U.S. healthcare system may benefit from reduced expenditures associated with retention. Grounded in Ellenbecker’s job retention model, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore strategies healthcare organizational leaders use to retain employed primary care and internal medicine physicians. The participants comprised six physician leaders from three healthcare organizations …

Wildfires are becoming an increasing challenge to the sustainability of boreal peatland (BP) ecosystems and can alter the stability of boreal carbon storage. However, predicting the occurrence of rare and extreme BP fires proves to be challenging, and gaining a quantitative understanding of the factors, both natural and anthropogenic, inducing BP fires remains elusive. Here, we quantified the predictability of BP fires and their primary controlling factors from 1997 to 2015 using a two-step correcting machine learning (ML) framework that combines multiple ML classifiers, regression models, and an error-correcting technique. We found that (1) the adopted oversampling algorithm effectively addressed …

Data Encoding For Healthcare Data Democratization And Information Leakage Prevention, Anshul Thakur, Tingting Zhu, Vinayak Abrol, Jacob Armstrong, Yujiang Wang, David A Clifton

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The lack of data democratization and information leakage from trained models hinder the development and acceptance of robust deep learning-based healthcare solutions. This paper argues that irreversible data encoding can provide an effective solution to achieve data democratization without violating the privacy constraints imposed on healthcare data and clinical models. An ideal encoding framework transforms the data into a new space where it is imperceptible to a manual or computational inspection. However, encoded data should preserve the semantics of the original data such that deep learning models can be trained effectively. This paper hypothesizes the characteristics of the desired encoding …

PURPOSE: Corneal biomechanical failure is the hallmark of keratoconus (KC); however, the cause of this failure remains elusive. Collagen type XII (

METHODS: TaqMan quantitative PCR was performed on 31 corneal epithelium samples of progressive KC and myopic control eyes. Tissue microarrays were constructed using full-thickness corneas from 61 KC cases during keratoplasty and 18 non-KC autopsy eyes and stained with an antibody specific to COL12A1. Additionally,

RESULTS: COL12A1 expression was reduced at transcript levels in KC epithelium compared to controls (ratio: 0.58, p<0.03). Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated that COL12A1 protein expression in BL was undetectable, with reduced expression in KC epithelium, basement membrane, and stroma.

CONCLUSIONS: The apparent absence of COL12A1 in KC BL, together with the functional importance that
