Reimagining The Criminal Justice Response To Sexual Assault, Jacob Swanson
Reimagining The Criminal Justice Response To Sexual Assault, Jacob Swanson
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
After a crime is reported, several different stakeholders work to take the case from a police report to a conviction. In sexual assault cases, these stakeholders may consist of police officers, medical professionals, advocates, forensic scientists, prosecutors, and others. Yet, this process cannot begin until a victim reports their crime to law enforcement. Sexual assault cases are widely underreported and for a variety of reasons. Data from the 2015-2019 National Crime Victimization Survey suggests that only about one-third of sexual assaults are reported to police, while only about 3% lead to a felony conviction (RAINN, n.d.).
The criminal justice community …
Considerations For The Implementation Of A Specialized Mental Health Probation Caseload, Ross Becker
Considerations For The Implementation Of A Specialized Mental Health Probation Caseload, Ross Becker
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
The field of community corrections has undergone a transformation. While holding probationers accountable is still the expectation, agencies have begun to embrace evidence-based interventions to guide client change instead of a more punitive approach. The creation of specialized mental health probation caseloads is a natural evolution of supervision. The purpose of a specialized mental health caseload is to create a pathway for the ethical supervision of clients experiencing serious and persistent mental illness. Administrators who are committed to compassionate service will be most impactful when they consider the many potential ethical implications for both the client and the probation practitioner …

Synthesis And Photopatterning Of Synthetic Thiol-Norbornene Hydrogels, Umu S. Jalloh, Arielle Gsell, Kirstene Gultian, James Macaulay, Abigail Madden, Jillian Smith, Luke Siri, Sebastian Vega
Rowan-Virtua School of Translational Biomedical Engineering & Sciences Departmental Research
Hydrogels are a class of soft biomaterials and the material of choice for a myriad of biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility and highly tunable mechanical and biochemical properties. Specifically, light-mediated thiol-norbornene click reactions between norbornene-modified macromers and di-thiolated crosslinkers can be used to form base hydrogels amenable to spatial biochemical modifications via subsequent light reactions between pendant norbornenes in the hydrogel network and thiolated peptides. Macromers derived from natural sources (e.g., hyaluronic acid, gelatin, alginate) can cause off-target cell signaling, and this has motivated the use of synthetic macromers such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In this study, commercially available …

No. 15: International Migration And Food Insecurity In Urban Namibia, Lawrence Kazembe, Godfrey Tawodzera, Ndeyapo Nickanor
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
Food security and migration have emerged as key development challenges in Namibia. Internal migration, where people move from rural areas to urban centres such as the capital, Windhoek, has been given a great deal of research and policy attention. However, there is a dearth of research on the relationship between international migration and food security in the country. This paper aims to fill this gap by investigating the nexus between international migration and household food security in Windhoek. Drawing on data from a city-wide household food security survey of the city, the paper compares the food security status of international …

No. 16: Evolving Food Security Challenges Facing Internal Migrants During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Chinese Cities, Zhenzhong Si, Taiyang Zhong
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly exacerbated the economic, social and political vulnerabilities of internal and international migrants and increased their food insecurity in several cities of the Global South. So far, very little attention has been paid to the dynamics of internal migrants’ food security in urban China since the emergence of the pandemic. Based on the results of an online survey conducted in the cities of Wuhan and Nanjing in early 2020 and a review of secondary materials, this paper identifies the major phases of China’s COVID-19 containment policies and evaluates their effects on the food security of internal …

No. 14: Food Insecurity And Irregular Labour Migration From Northern Malawi To South Africa, Anil Dhakal
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The factors influencing migration decisions from Malawi to South Africa have changed with the end of contract migration to the mines and the new normal of irregular migration of both men and women to work in other sectors of the South African economy. Food insecurity is now one of the main drivers of migration as migrants seek to earn income to remit to family in Malawi to purchase food and to invest in agriculture. Food insecurity is normally associated with rural households, but this paper shows that it is also a driver of migration to South Africa from urban Malawi. …

Evaluating Safety, Permanency, And Well-Being Outcomes For Adolescents In Family Home Program Care, Tami C. Soper
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Policy decision makers have restricted the use of residential behavioral health services for youth involved in child welfare and juvenile justice systems, threatening their existence. Family Home Program (FHP), an evidence-based residential model, is an example of a program at risk of extinction because of negative characterization. While in-home, community-based, and foster care levels of child welfare services are assessed for conformity with federal outcomes using the federal Child and Family Services Review (CFSR), residential care does not receive this review. The purpose of this study was to bridge the evaluation gap between in-home and community-based child welfare programs and …

Human Mitragynine And 7-Hydroxymitragynine Pharmacokinetics After Single And Multiple Daily Doses Of Oral Encapsulated Dried Kratom Leaf Powder, Marilyn A. Huestis, Martin A. Brett, John Bothmer, Ramsey Atallah
Institute of Emerging Health Professions Faculty Papers
Kratom leaves, consumed by millions worldwide as tea or ground leaf powder, contain multiple alkaloids, with mitragynine being the most abundant and responsible for most effects. Mitragynine is a partial µ-opioid receptor agonist and competitive antagonist at κ- and δ-opioid receptors; however, unlike morphine, it does not activate the β-arrestin-2 respiratory depression pathway. Due to few human mitragynine data, the largest randomized, between-subject, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation study of 500–4000 mg dried kratom leaf powder (6.65–53.2 mg mitragynine) was conducted. LC-MS/MS mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine plasma concentrations were obtained after single and 15 daily doses. Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine Cmax increased dose …

African Swine Fever Virus Early Protein Pi73r Suppresses The Type-I Ifn Promoter Activities, Danh C. Lai, Jayeshbhai Chaudhari, Hiep L.X. Vu
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
African swine fever virus is known to suppress type-I interferon (IFN) responses. The main objective of this study was to screen early-expressed viral genes for their ability to suppress IFN production. Out of 16 early genes examined, I73R exhibited robust suppression of cGAS-STING-induced IFN-β promoter activities, impeding the function of both IRF3 and NF-κB transcription factors. As a result, I73R obstructed IRF3 nuclear translocation following the treatment of cells with poly(dA:dT), a strong inducer of the cGAS-STING signaling pathway. Although the I73R protein exhibits structural homology with the Zα domain binding to the left-handed helical form of DNA known as …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Ubiquitin-specific protease7 (USP7) regulates the stability of the p53 tumor suppressor protein and several other proteins critical for tumor cell survival. Aberrant expression of USP7 facilitates human malignancies by altering the activity of proto-oncogenes/proteins, and tumor suppressor genes. Therefore, USP7 is a validated anti-cancer drug target. In this study, a drug repurposing approach was used to identify new hits against the USP7 enzyme. It is one of the most strategic approaches to find new uses for drugs in a cost- and time-effective way. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance-based screening of 172 drugs identified 11 compounds that bind to the catalytic domain of …

Background and Objective: The hip-spine syndrome was first described in 1983. The premise of the report was that the hip and spine are closely related and patients can easily have overlapping conditions and misdiagnoses. Since that time, there has been considerable advancement in our understanding of spinopelvic parameters and how degenerative disc disease can affect the pelvis and subsequently the acetabulum. Our objective is to provide an updated review on the relationship between hip and spine degeneration, how we define the relationship, and what steps should be taken when planning surgical intervention for these patients.
Methods: A literature review was …

Study On The Rights Of Parties In Live-In Relationships In India - A Case Review Approach, Prabhavathi N
Theses and Dissertations
Heterosexual live-in relationship is viewed as a stigma in Indian society. However, through a plethora of judgments, the Apex Court of India granted monetary relief and physical protections to couples in live-in relationships. While so a few High Courts had refused to grant protection to the live-in couples by stating that giving such rights and protection would destroy the country's social fabric.
View of such High Courts reflects on the opinion that our Courts indeed have different ideas while granting reliefs to persons in live-in relationships. Catena of judicial decisions explained this relationship as a "walk in and walked out" …

Nurse understaffing relates to reduced quality and safety of care in the healthcare sector, which substantially risks the nation's future health. With issues such as faculty shortage, burnout, increased workload, retirement, and increased turnover, the nursing sector has been unable to sustainably have adequate staffing to satisfy patients' needs. Nurse leaders, directly and indirectly, influence the rate of nurse retention and turnover mainly by affecting the work environment, workload, and staff motivation. Based on the leader-member exchange model, this research stipulates that an amicable and supportive relationship between leaders and followers promotes staff retention and increased productivity. The study aims …
