Trauma Informed Care And Secondary Traumatic Stress Experienced By Counselors In Community Mental Health, Rebecca Renee Cameron-Hernandez
Trauma Informed Care And Secondary Traumatic Stress Experienced By Counselors In Community Mental Health, Rebecca Renee Cameron-Hernandez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is prevalent in counselors working with clients with trauma. Clients seeking services in community mental health (CMH) settings often have a higher prevalence of traumatic experiences and are unable to access services outside of CMH settings. Counselors working in these settings also generally face high caseloads, less pay, and often less experience in the field. Trauma informed care (TIC) has been shown to increase positive outcomes for clients and counselors providing services to clients. This quantitative survey study focused on the relationship between counselor attitudes related toward TIC and the severity of STS experienced by counselors. …
Biopiracy: Using New Laws And Databases To Protect Indigenous Communities, Cleo-Symone Scott
Biopiracy: Using New Laws And Databases To Protect Indigenous Communities, Cleo-Symone Scott
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Indigenous people have a historical link to those who inhabited a country or region at the time when people of different cultures or origins arrived. Traditionally, indigenous people have a special relationship with their ancestral environments. But their way of living has long been under threat. The land that indigenous people live on is home to over 80% of our planet’s biodiversity, but it continues to be appropriated and plundered due to bioprospecting or, as some call it, biopiracy. Bioprospecting is defined as “the exploration and information gathering of genetic and biochemical material to develop commercial products.” While innovation is …

A hallmark of cancer is the dysregulation of the cell cycle. The CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib is approved for treating advanced estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer, but its success is limited by the development of acquired resistance owing to long-term therapy despite promising clinical outcomes. This situation necessitates the development of potential combination strategies. Here, we report that didox, an inhibitor of ribonucleotide reductase in combination with palbociclib, can overcome palbociclib resistance in ER-positive and ER-negative breast cancers. This study shows didox downregulates an element of the cell cycle checkpoint, cyclin D1, accompanied by a reduction in NF-κB activity in vitro and tumor …

The co-op/landlord sought summary judgment against the tenants, who refused access for repairs to a leak allegedly originating from their apartment. The landlord, relying on the business judgment rule and a plumber's assessment, argued that the repairs were necessary under the terms of the proprietary lease. The court found in favor of the landlord, granting summary judgment, declaring the tenants obliged to provide access for repairs, dismissing their affirmative defenses and counterclaims, and referring attorney fees to a special referee. Key legal points include application of the business judgment rule to cooperative board decisions, tenant obligations under the lease to …

Bermad: Batch Effect Removal For Single-Cell Rna-Seq Data Using A Multi-Layer Adaptation Autoencoder With Dual-Channel Framework, Xiangxin Zhan, Yanbin Yin, Han Zhang
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Motivation: Removal of batch effect between multiple datasets from different experimental platforms has become an urgent problem, since single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) techniques developed rapidly. Although there have been some methods for this problem, most of them still face the challenge of under-correction or over-correction. Specifically, handling batch effect in highly nonlinear scRNA-seq data requires a more powerful model to address under-correction. In the meantime, some previous methods focus too much on removing difference between batches, which may disturb the biological signal heterogeneity of datasets generated from different experiments, thereby leading to over-correction.
Results: In this article, we …

Liposomes as carriers for CRISPR/Cas9 complexes represent an attractive approach for cardiovascular gene therapy. A critical barrier to this approach remains the efficient delivery of CRISPR-based genetic materials into cardiomyocytes. Echogenic liposomes (ELIP) containing a fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled decoy oligodeoxynucleotide against nuclear factor kappa B (ELIP-NF-κB-FITC) were used both in vitro on mouse neonatal ventricular myocytes and in vivo on rat hearts to assess gene delivery efficacy with or without ultrasound. In vitro analysis was then repeated with ELIP containing Cas9-sg-IL1RL1 (interleukin 1 receptor-like 1) RNA to determine the efficiency of gene knockdown. ELIP-NF-κB-FITC without ultrasound showed limited gene delivery in …

Diabetes is a pervasive health problem with potentially devastating but preventable consequences. Although technological advances and new treatments have resulted in great optimism for controlling the disease, research indicates that the challenges of diabetes self-management are overwhelming for many. One creative intervention which has beginning empirical support and which seems to be helping many living with diabetes to sustain management of the disease and quality of life is diabetes support groups. Nurse diabetes educators have been frequent facilitators in these groups, yet little is known about how these nurses perceive their role and the strategies they use as well as …

Collaborative Teaching To Impact: Embedding Wikipedia Editing In An Asian Studies Curriculum, Angie Chau, Ying Liu
Journal of East Asian Libraries
The use of A.I. tools in learning and research introduces significant challenges to conventional essay assignments in Humanities, necessitating the exploration of alternative teaching and evaluation methods.
In many academic libraries, subject Librarians are often invited by instructors to teach one-shot library research skills workshops as guest speakers. The one-shot library instruction model is “not sufficient to convey the depth and breadth of information literacy concepts to students”, however, it remains in use “in part because of the sheer practicum of the model.”
In response to the identified need for change, the instructor and the librarian undertook a case study …

Effective implementation of cancer screening programs can reduce disease-specific incidence and mortality. Screening is currently recommended for breast, cervical, colorectal and lung cancer. However, initial and repeat adherence to screening tests in accordance with current guidelines is sub-optimal, with the lowest rates observed in historically underserved groups. If used in concert with recommended cancer screening tests, new biospecimen-based multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests could help to identify more cancers that may be amendable to effective treatment. Clinical trials designed to assess the safety and efficacy of MCED tests to assess their potential for reducing cancer mortality are needed and many …

Cyberbullying During Covid-19 Pandemic: Relation To Perceived Social Isolation Among College And University Students, Nadya Stefani Neuhaeusler
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
One tell-tale sign of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is the heavy reliance on electronic devices. Young adults in particular have indicated a greater presence on social media and high levels of loneliness during the pandemic. This trend has raised concerns about increased feelings of social isolation and reliance on technology, which could lead to more internet or computer crimes—including cyberbullying. Despite a growing body of literature, little is known about the association between cyberbullying victimization and social isolation among young adults— with even less known about this phenomenon in the context of the ongoing pandemic. Drawing on survey …

BACKGROUND: Health assessment tools developed using mainstream or Western concepts have been widely used in clinical practice worldwide. However, even culturally adapted or culturally based tools may not be relevant in other social contexts if they are grounded in Western beliefs and perspectives. The application of mainstream assessment tools, when used in Indigenous populations, can lead to the inappropriate application of normative data and inaccurate or biased diagnosis of conditions as Indigenous concepts of health differ from Western biomedical concepts of health. Thus, considering the need for culturally meaningful, sensitive, safe, and unbiased health assessment approaches and instruments over recent …
