Water Potential From Adaptive Force Matching For Ice And Liquid With Revised Dispersion Predicts Supercooled Liquid Anomalies In Good Agreement With Two Independent Experimental Fits, Raymond Weldon, Feng Wang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

A revised version of the Water potential from Adaptive force matching for Ice and Liquid (WAIL) was developed by using the previous data set for fitting the WAIL model but with a dispersion term calculated using symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). The model has no adjustable parameters and relies solely on fitting first-principles information. The new model, named revised WAIL (rWAIL), shows improved predictions of most properties of water when compared to the previously published WAIL model. The rWAIL model also compares favorably to other first-principles-derived water models, such as MB-Pol, at only a fraction of the computational cost. The …

Accelerometer-Based Head Impact Detection In Soccer - Where Are We?, Nipun Chopra Mar 2024

Accelerometer-Based Head Impact Detection In Soccer - Where Are We?, Nipun Chopra

Biology Faculty publications

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a significant burden on individuals, societies, and healthcare systems as it is associated with long-term neurological and behavioral consequences. Although these effects vary according to severity, events that lead to TBI and mild TBI (mTBI), such as concussions, subconcussive impacts, and non-impact violent head movements, may also lead to similar changes. Soccer players are particularly prone to mTBI as they are exposed to head impacts in various ways during training and gameplay. A commonly-claimed TBI risk is that posed by the "heading" technique. Our examination of the literature questions the extent to which heading actually …

Inclusive Postsecondary Education's Effect On Individuals With Idd: A Systematic Literature Review, Hunter Wolff

University Honors Theses

With the purpose of evaluating the impact of Inclusive Postsecondary Education (IPSE) effects on those experiencing intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD), a systematic literature review was conducted. Proponents of the expansion of these programs often cite participant growth in academic-related skills, socialization, and competitive integrated employment. While several studies document these benefits, few studies present and discuss all the data collectively. This review aims to both locate the data that shows how IPSE programs affect the students within them as well as to provide a location in which all the data can be accessed. A thorough conducting of the research …

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Conscientious objections (CO) can be disruptive in a variety of ways and may disadvantage patients and colleagues who must step-in to assume care. Nevertheless, nurses have a right and responsibility to object to participation in interventions that would seriously harm their sense of integrity. This is an ethical problem of balancing risks and responsibilities related to patient care. Here we explore the problem and propose a nonlinear framework for exploring the authenticity of a claim of CO from the perspective of the nurse and of those who must evaluate such claims. We synthesized the framework using Rest’s Four Component Model …

We appreciate and agree with the importance of the Best Practices for Weight at Work Research outlined by Lemmon et al. (Reference Lemmon, Jensen and Kuljanin2023). To help further contribute to this body of literature, we connect the scholarship related to weight-basedFootnote1 discrimination to contemporary allyship scholarship. Allyship support and advocacy behaviors improve employee experiences on day-to-day and long-term bases, and are therefore critical to research about weight at work. It is critically important to examine the development of allies against weight-stigma for two reasons.

N-Nitrosamines are potential human carcinogens frequently detected in natural and engineered aquatic systems. This study sheds light on the role of carbonyl compounds in the formation of N-nitrosamines by nitrosation of five secondary amines via different pathways. The results showed that compared to a control system, the presence of formaldehyde enhances the formation of N-nitrosamines by a factor of 5-152 at pH 7, depending on the structure of the secondary amines. Acetaldehyde showed a slight enhancement effect on N-nitrosamine formation, while acetone and benzaldehyde did not promote nitrosation reactions. For neutral and basic conditions, the iminium …

The New York State Dental Journal

The origins of the current “opioid epidemic” sweeping America with its consequent overdose related deaths has resulted in numerous publications accusing the dental profession of excessively prescribing narcotic analgesics leading to the initial addictive episode. These allusions have prompted the national organization representing New York States’ almost 600 oral and maxillofacial surgeons to develop and promulgate in its official journal , a position paper detailing a non-narcotic pain management regimen to alleviate post operative discomfort. However, their pronouncement suggests prescribing a maximum daily dosage of ibuprofen which has previously been documented as causing myocardial infarction and stroke in vulnerable older …

Enhancing Medical Image Quality Using Neutrosophic Fuzzy Domain And Multi-Level Enhancement Transforms: A Comparative Study For Leukemia Detection And Classification, A. A. Salama, Mahmoud Y. Shams, Huda E. Khalid, Doaa E. Mousa

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Medical image processing has become a critical research area due to the vast amounts of digital image data available. However, medical images often suffer from poor illumination and low visibility of significant structures, requiring image enhancement to improve image quality before processing. In this paper, we propose a technique for enhancing medical images by removing noise and improving contrast based on three different enhancing transforms. The proposed technique embeds the image into a neutrosophic fuzzy domain, where it is mapped into three different levels of trueness, falseness, and indeterminacy, and each level is processed individually using the enhancement transforms. We …

Modeling Influenced Criteria In Classifiers' Imbalanced Challenges Based On Trss Bolstered By The Vague Nature Of Neutrosophic Theory, Ibrahim El-Henawy, Shrouk El-Amir, Mona Mohamed, Florentin Smarandache

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Because of the advancements in technology, classification learning has become an essential activity in today's environment. Unfortunately, through the classification process, we noticed that the classifiers are unable to deal with the imbalanced data, which indicates there are many more instances (majority instances) in one class than in another. Identifying an appropriate classifier among the various candidates is a time-consuming and complex effort. Improper selection can hinder the classification model's ability to provide the right outcomes. Also, this operation requires preference among a set of alternatives by a set of criteria. Hence, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology is the appropriate …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Needle Thoracostomies At A Tertiary Level 2 Trauma Center., Sarthak Parikh, Maryavis Howell, Hung-Wen Yeh, Mani Cheruvu, Robert Goodwin, John Shellenberger

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: A tension pneumothorax is a condition that results in elevated pressure within the pleural space. The effective management of tension pneumothorax relies on needle decompression, commonly performed at the second intercostal space (ICS) midclavicular line (MCL). However, some literature suggests that catheters placed in the second intercostal space midclavicular line are prone to higher failure rates compared to the fifth intercostal space midaxillary line (MAL) (42.5% versus 16.7%, respectively). In this study, we aim to identify and scrutinize the prevalence of prehospital needle decompression from one tertiary care center over eight years and examine their trends, efficacies, or pitfalls. …

Evaluating United States Air Force Installation Water Security, Michael L. Berg

Theses and Dissertations

Water shortage at Mountain Home Air Force Base in the last decade ignited the need for an assessment of relative water security risk across United States Air Force installations. Current evaluation methods often differ from actual conditions suggesting a need to categorize security across the enterprise for multiple discrete locations. Indicator-based approaches for characterizing water security are common in academic literature but have little methodological consensus and have rarely been applied to discrete areas spread across geographically separated locations with diverse climates. Using a two-stage analytical hierarchy process and normalized utility functions, water security at 30 installations across the continental …

(How) Can Litigation Advance Multiracial Democracy?, Olatunde C.A. Johnson

Fordham Law Review

Can rights litigation meaningfully advance social change in this moment? Many progressive or social justice legal scholars, lawyers, and advocates would argue “no.” Constitutional decisions issued by the U.S. Supreme Court thwart the aims of progressive social movements. Further, contemporary social movements often decenter courts as a primary domain of social change. In addition, a new wave of legal commentary urges progressives to de-emphasize courts and constitutionalism, not simply tactically but as a matter of democratic survival.

This Essay considers the continuing role of rights litigation, using the litigation over race-conscious affirmative action as an illustration. Courts are a key …
