Acceptance Of Bite Presentations And Feeding Behaviors Of 8 To 12-Month-Old Infants: A Reflection Of Typical Feeding Development, Amy Delaney, Ericka Diestler, Parama Sridevi, Arafat Mahmood, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed
Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
The lack of age-appropriate expectations for feeding acceptance patterns in early childhood is a barrier to early and accurate identification of pediatric feeding disorder (PFD). The objective of the study was to describe the process by which typically developing children 8–12 months of age accept or refuse bite presentations and their corresponding feeding behaviors, aiming to establish age-appropriate normative data for feeding acceptance.
Method
Using cross-sectional methodology, we studied the proportion of bite presentations accepted, the type of feeding behaviors-passive, disruptive, expulsion, feeding concerns- observed at presentation and acceptance or refusal, and the duration between presentation to acceptance or …

Single-Step Collagen-Elastin Dermal Matrix With Split-Thickness Skin Grafting For Keloid Burn Scars: A Case Series, Meredith Elman, Pablo Aguayo
Presentations
Introduction Keloids may pose significant difficulty to affected patients: they can be painful, itchy, impact mobility if they cross joints, and most disruptively, can be physically disfiguring and cause emotional distress. While multiple treatments exist, none reliably provide scar resolution, and up to 100% of keloids return after surgical excision. MatriDerm is a dermal replacement scaffold that has shown previous efficacy in management of a variety of acute and chronic wounds in adults, including burns. In this two patient case series, we aim to demonstrate the efficacy of single-step application of MatriDerm dermal substitute with split-thickness skin grafting in the …

Nanomedicine in oncology has not had the success in clinical impact that was anticipated in the early stages of the field's development. Ideally, nanomedicines selectively accumulate in tumor tissue and reduce systemic side effects compared to traditional chemotherapeutics. However, this has been more successful in preclinical animal models than in humans. The causes of this failure to translate may be related to the intra- and inter-patient heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment. Predicting whether a patient will respond positively to treatment prior to its initiation, through evaluation of characteristics like nanoparticle extravasation and retention potential in the tumor, may be a …

Commensal gut bacteria use oleate hydratase to release a spectrum of hydroxylated fatty acids using host-derived unsaturated fatty acids. These compounds are thought to attenuate the immune response, but the underlying signaling mechanism(s) remain to be established. The pathogen Staphylococcus aureus also expresses an oleate hydratase and 10- hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (h18:0) is the most abundant oleate hydratase metabolite found at Staphylococcal skin infection sites. Here, we show h18:0 stimulates the transcription of a set of lipid metabolism genes associated with the activation of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) in the RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line and mouse primary bone marrow-derived …

Prioritizing Control Of Lesser Celandine (Ficaria Verna) In Deciduous Forests In Indianapolis, In, Kevin Tungesvick, Spencer A. Goehl, Donald R. Miller
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Lesser celandine (Ficaria verna) is an aggressive ephemeral perennial native to Europe and western Asia that invades floodplains and mesic forests. It has been recorded to escape from cultivation throughout the eastern deciduous forest and has become abundant in many riparian areas in the Mid Atlantic, Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley. It emerges earlier than most native vernal flora and forms a dense mat that replaces the less aggressive native spring ephemeral community. Control efforts on floodplains are often unsuccessful due to floodwater transport of upstream propagules. Eco Logic LLC, a local ecological restoration firm, worked with Indy …

A Comparison Of Western And Eastern Soft Systems Approaches, John L. Anaya, John L. Anaya, John L. Anaya
Master's Theses
Soft System Approaches have been developed worldwide to help problem-solvers and decision-makers develop solutions to complex problems, such as aerospace systems. Soft System Approaches were designed to help lower the disorder of developing a complex system by increasing understanding of a situation. Four Soft System Approaches were investigated, two from the West and two from the East. Within the context of the paper, the West refers to thought patterns associated with thinkers and scientists in Europe and North America, and the East refers to those from and around China. The two from the West are Peter Checkland’s Soft Systems Methodology …

The ability of tumour cells to thrive in harsh microenvironments depends on the utilization of nutrients available in the milieu. Here we show that pancreatic cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) regulate tumour cell metabolism through the secretion of acetate, which can be blocked by silencing ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) in CAFs. We further show that acetyl-CoA synthetase short-chain family member 2 (ACSS2) channels the exogenous acetate to regulate the dynamic cancer epigenome and transcriptome, thereby facilitating cancer cell survival in an acidic microenvironment. Comparative H3K27ac ChIP–seq and RNA–seq analyses revealed alterations in polyamine homeostasis through regulation of SAT1 gene expression and enrichment …

Immunomodulatory Effects Of Baff And April Cytokines In Post-Pulmonary Infection Lung Cancer: Implications For Drug Resistance And Progression, Wael Alturaiki
Saudi Medical Journal
Lung cancer is a complicated and challenging disease and is one of the most common causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Within the lung microenvironment, specific cytokines, including the B cell activation factor (BAFF) and the A proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL), are produce by various cells, notably airway epithelial cells, in response allergic inflammation or pulmonary infection. These cytokines play a critical role in maintaining local immune responses and fostering the survival of immune cells. The BAFF and APRIL system have been connected in a range of malignancies and have shown their potential in inducing drug resistance and promoting cancer progression. This …

Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To examine the simplified Fournier Gangrene Severe Index Score (SFGSI) and the number of species in culture findings for predicting death in Fournier Gangrene (FG) patients in terms of their predictive power. Methods: From January 2017 to July 2022, the medical records of individuals undergoing emergency surgery for FG were obtained. A total of 80 patients were examined for clinical data such as age, gender, laboratory parameters, etiology, isolated bacteria, and mortality rate. Results: We identified a statistically significant mean difference between SFGSI ( p <0.0001) and quickSOFA (qSOFA) scores ( p =0.002) in determining the survival rate of FG patients. The sensitivity and specificity of the SFGSI score in predicting mortality were 90.1% and 88.3% respectively, whereas the sensitivity and specificity of the qSOFA score were 88.2% and 86.2%. E. Coli comprised 56.2% of the bacteria, followed by S. Haemolyticus , S. Aureus , P. Aeruginosa , and K. Pneumoniae . On the basis of bacterial culture results, P. Aeruginosa had the highest fatality rate (100%) followed by S. Aureus (75%), S. Haemolyticus (30%), and E. Coli (20%), in that order. Conclusion: The survival rate of FG patients can be predicted using the sensitivity and specificity of the SFGSI and qSOFA scores together. P. Aeruginosa- infected patients have the greatest mortality rate (100%) compared to the other groups.
