Assessing Biological Condition Of Restored Streams In An Agriculturally Impaired Chesapeake Bay Sub-Watershed, Julia M. Portmann, Bruce Wiggins
Assessing Biological Condition Of Restored Streams In An Agriculturally Impaired Chesapeake Bay Sub-Watershed, Julia M. Portmann, Bruce Wiggins
Department of Biology - Faculty Scholarship
Intensive agricultural practices can be detrimental to aquatic biological conditions; however, restoration such as removing livestock and creating in-stream habitat can strengthen biotic communities. Smith Creek, a sub-watershed of the Chesa- peake Bay, was designated a showcase watershed in 2010 by the United States Department of Agriculture to demonstrate the efficacy of widespread restoration. Our study sought to follow up on these efforts by assessing the individual and combined impacts of restoration, habitat, and land cover on aquatic macroinvertebrate communities in Smith Creek. We predicted that longer-restored sites, sites with less surrounding pasture, and streams with larger substrate size would …

The PilZ domain-containing protein, PlzA, is the only known cyclic di- GMP binding protein encoded by all Lyme disease spirochetes. PlzA has been implicated in the regulation of many borrelial processes, but the effector mechanism of PlzA was not previously known. Here, we report that PlzA can bind DNA and RNA and that nucleic acid binding requires c-di-GMP, with the affinity of PlzA for nucleic acids increasing as concentrations of c-di-GMP were increased. A mutant PlzA that is incapable of bind- ing c-di-GMP did not bind to any tested nucleic acids. We also determined that PlzA interacts predominantly with the …

Notetaking As Validity Evidence: A Mixed-Methods Investigation Of Question Preview In Eap Listening Assessment, Rebecca Yeager, Gomee Park, Ray J. T. Liao
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
Recent scholarship has questioned the cognitive validity of listening tests with preview, in which test-takers can see test questions before listening. This study mined student notes for evidence of cognitive processes in listening tests with and without preview, using a mixed-methods design that explored the effect of test format on notetaking behaviors. Qualitative analysis indicated that students who previewed items were more likely to systematically omit information, highlight previewed keywords, and engage in shallower structural representation. Conversely, Kruskal-Wallis tests revealed that students who listened without preview took more notes, especially of main ideas and details, and had better coverage of …

We are awash in lies. Misinformation has always been with us, but the endemicity of social media and the depth of political polarization in the United States and elsewhere has enabled falsehoods to be amplified, monetized, microtargeted, and spread around the world at unprecedented speed and scale. The consequences for democracy, public health, and social harmony are emergent and grave.
Misinformation presents one of the most vexing challenges for content moderation on social media (and off it, such as on cable news) for myriad reasons. Because misinformation can be difficult or controversial to define, policing it risks chilling core political …

Anatomic Factors Associated With Degeneration And Fraying Of The Coracoacromial Ligament, Ryan Lopez, Jaspal Singh, Mohammad Ghoraishian, Thema Nicholson, Stephen Gates, Surena Namdari
Rothman Institute Papers
BACKGROUND: The coracoacromial ligament (CAL) is frequently observed to be damaged during arthroscopy and it is unclear how demographic, anatomic, and radiographic factors are related to CAL degeneration in full-thickness rotator cuff tears.
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted of patients at a single institution undergoing shoulder arthroscopy for first-time, full-thickness rotator cuff tears. We evaluated preoperative anteroposterior radiographs to obtain critical shoulder angle, glenoid inclination, acromial index, acromiohumeral distance, lateral acromial angle, and acromial morphology. We documented CAL quality, rotator cuff tear size and pattern during arthroscopy. Multiple logistic regression was used to identify predictive factors for encountering severe …

Surgical Site Infections Post Cesarean Section And Associated Risk Factors: A Retrospective Case-Control Study At A Tertiary Hospital In Kenya., David Odada, Jasmit Shah, Annastacia Mbithi, Reena Shah
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Background: Surgical site infection is a common healthcare-associated infection that affects maternal health, yet it can be prevented or controlled. Caesarian sections are most likely to develop surgical site infections. The rates of delivery by caesarian section in reported to be higher that the acceptable rates in some healthcare facilities. Risk factors for surgical site infections can be identified and modified to reduce the occurrence of surgical site infections. This study aims to determine the risk factors that contribute to surgical site infections post caesarian section in a tertiary teaching hospital in Kenya.
Methods: This was a retrospective case-control (1:2 …

Mobile monitoring can supplement regulatory measurements, particularly in low-income countries where stationary monitors’ density is low. Here, we report results from a ~year-long mobile monitoring campaign of on-road black carbon (BC) mass concentration, ultrafine particle (UFP) number concentration, and carbon dioxide (CO2) in Bengaluru, India. The study route included ~150 unique kms covering urban and peri-urban residential neighborhoods and the central business district (CBD); ~22 repeat measurements were made per monitored road-segment, covering most seasons. After cleaning the data for known instrument artifacts and sensitivities, we generated 30 m high-resolution stable ‘data only’ spatial maps of BC, UFP, and CO2 …

The inner workings of the entertainment business are often invisible. The end product of a beautiful film, a riveting play, a compelling television show or even a funny commercial is perhaps all most people ever know about show business. Not a lot is known or shared transparently about film financing, casting or about talent representation.

About 3 billion new tires are produced each year and about 800 million tires become waste annually. Global dependence upon tires produced from natural rubber and petroleum-based compounds represents a persistent and complex environmental problem with only partial and often-times, ineffective solutions. Tire emissions may be in the form of whole tires, tire particles, and chemical compounds, each of which is transported through various atmospheric, terrestrial, and aquatic routes in the natural and built environments. Production and use of tires generates multiple heavy metals, plastics, PAH's, and other compounds that can be toxic alone or as chemical cocktails. Used tires …

Learning And Listening: A Podcast On Navigating Latinx/E Identities, Lilianna A. Rivas
Communication Studies
Utilizing the Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979), the present podcast seeks to explore and understand how individuals with intersectional identities in the Latinx/e community communicate their identity to others in the Latinx/e community and society. Research in the fields of Ethnic Studies, Psychology, Education, and Communication focuses on issues and identities in the Latinx/e community. Much existing research focuses heavily on intersectionality, and the podcast will seek to do the same. These intersections of identities can conflict or be perceived as in conflict. This creates a gray area in the spectrum between interpersonal and intergroup interactions. Some examples …

Addressing Educational Inequality In The United States: A Comparative Approach To The European System, Yi-Sheng Liu
Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review
This study compares educational inequality in the U.S. and Europe. Utilizing a comparative approach based on the Positive Obligations of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, we expand on social contexts and objective facts to address how the U.S responds to educational inequality issues in contemporary constitutional interpretation (digital transformation and disparity, for example). We examine emerging issues in social change and expectations and discuss the rationale for constitutional legal norms to explain how these contribute to constitutional change. We suggest that the nation’s confrontation with educational inequality should be guided by …

The Anticompetitive Nature Of Certificate Of Need And Certificate Of Public Advantage Laws In The United States, Caleb Atkins
Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review
Certificate of Need (CON) laws serve as a major barrier to entry in the healthcare market, which already suffers from a high degree of market concentration. Certificate of Public Advantage (COPA) laws give healthcare providers robust antitrust immunity by allowing a merger to go through that would oftentimes be illegal. These COPAs can lead to a reduced quality of care for patients, reduced access to care in the communities where hospitals with COPAs operate, reduced wages for hospital employees in the relevant geographic market, and increased prices for patients seeking care. Given the essential nature of healthcare services, addressing the …
