OBJECTIVE: Early adversity, such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), is a risk factor for the development of substance use disorder (SUD). ACEs are associated with earlier initiation of substance use. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and age of initiation of substance use using survival analysis. It is hypothesized that individuals with higher ACEs will have an earlier age of initiation.
METHOD: Participants were recruited from the University of Kentucky's Laboratory for Human Behavioral Pharmacology. Participants were 18 years or older, English speaking, and actively engaged in substance use. Participants were not in substance abuse treatment nor were they …

Best Practices For Recruitment And Retention Of Transportation Professionals, Chris Van Dyke, Bryan Gibson, Sarah Mccormack, Merl Hackbart, Doug Kreis
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Many public sector agencies, including state departments of transportation (DOTs), have long found recruiting and retaining staff a daunting challenge. Lured by the promise of higher salaries in the private sector, many people are reluctant to sacrifice their long-term earnings potential to pursue public service. And with the quality of fringe benefits (e.g., retirement plans, health insurance) offered by public agencies having declined gradually, it is even more difficult to persuade prospective employees to accept a lower salary. Many studies over the past 15—20 years have looked at methods for solving the problem of recruitment and retention within the context …

Burnout is a prevalent problem in the contemporary practice of medicine. Defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality as, “a long-term stress reaction marked by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of sense of personal accomplishment,” this multifactorial condition has significant implications for the clinicians who suffer it, their patients, and families. Neurologists suffer some of the highest rates of burnout. Burnout research on interventions often focus on the work environment. In this article, we will focus on burnout’s effects on home life and features of home life that can impact resiliency, specifically sleep hygiene.

Introduction: Symptom recognition and timely access to treatment are critical components of acute stroke care systems. Two mnemonics widely used in public educational campaigns for recognizing stroke symptoms include FAST (Face-Arm-Speech-Time) and BEFAST (Balance-Eyes-Face-Arm Speech-Time). The FAST mnemonic can miss up to 14% of strokes. BEFAST includes common posterior circulation stroke symptoms and has been implemented by several Comprehensive Stroke Centers (CSCs).
Methods: We sought to analyze the pattern of public educational materials available on the websites of US CSCs. The Joint Commission (JC) quality check website compiles a list containing the names and locations of the country’s 217 JC-certified …

Accuracy And Surface Roughness Of Co-Cr Partial Denture Frameworks With Different Digital Fabrication Methods, Islam Heiba
Dentistry
Statement of problem. Traditional removable partial denture (RPD) manufacture is being phased out in favor of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) techniques and rapid prototyping (RP), which provide more efficient methods of producing RPD frameworks. However, studies comparing the accuracy and surface roughness of these approaches on RPD frameworks are still scarce. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the accuracy and surface roughness of class I cobalt chromium (Co-Cr) removable partial denture frameworks digitally constructed using 2 different CAD-CAM technologies: direct milling (DM) and selective laser melting (SLM). Material and methods. An educational maxillary …

Defending Pornography: Free Speech, Sex, And The Fight For Women's Rights (2024), Nadine Strossen
Books
Named a Notable Book by The New York Times Book Review in 1995, Defending Pornography examines a key question that has divided feminists for decades: is censoring pornography good or bad for women? Nadine Strossen makes a powerful case that increasing government power to censor sexual expression, beyond the limits that the First Amendment sensibly permits (for example, outlawing child pornography) would do more harm than good for women and others who have traditionally been marginalized due to sex or gender, She explains how the very anti-porn laws pushed by some feminists have led to the censorship of LGBTQ+ and …

The Adverse Childhood Experiences Identification Gap In Speech Language Pathology, Mallory Prior
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Children exposed to adverse childhood experiences, a variety of potentially traumatic events occurring within the first 18 years of life, are at increased risk for speech and language disorders. Due to the high prevalence of trauma and its lasting effects, it is almost guaranteed that children who are experiencing the ongoing effects from adversity will be found on practicing Speech Language Pathologists’ caseloads. This scoping review was designed to identify current screening practices of Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) in comparison to other professionals (e.g., allied health and education), as well as additional information related to screening procedures for SLPs. The …
Pollinator Communities And Their Ecosystem Services At Conservation Grasslands And Adjacent Croplands, Araceli Gomez Villegas
Pollinator Communities And Their Ecosystem Services At Conservation Grasslands And Adjacent Croplands, Araceli Gomez Villegas
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Pollinators are intrinsically linked to the success of unmanaged and managed ecosystems by providing pollination services that aid in the reproduction of wildflowers and many crops. Land use change, habitat loss, fragmentation, and related landscape-level phenomena (for example, increased pesticide exposure) threaten pollinators and have been associated with population declines. In the Midwestern region of the United States, land conversion of native prairies and grasslands to row-crop agriculture has been one of the largest contributors to pollinator habitat loss. Conservation programs, such as the Conservation Reserve Program, have worked towards removing environmentally sensitive lands from agriculture production and enrolling them …
The Great Resignation: Narratives Of Mid-Career Teacher Burnout And Attrition, Nicole Burton
The Great Resignation: Narratives Of Mid-Career Teacher Burnout And Attrition, Nicole Burton
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the issues of teacher attrition. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, from January to November 2021, there was a 40% increase in the quit levels of teachers within the state and local education agencies (John, 2022). While prior research has examined early-career teachers leaving the profession, mid-career teachers have largely been left out of the conversation. This narrative inquiry investigates the reasons that mid-career teachers are leaving the profession. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four mid-career teachers hailing from the Midwest region. Interviews focused on understanding how teachers have experienced stress and …
The Oregon Drug Battle: Is Measure 110 Making A Difference?, Olivia Cohen
The Oregon Drug Battle: Is Measure 110 Making A Difference?, Olivia Cohen
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
The Oregon Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery Act, also known as Measure 110, was passed in November 2020 to address Oregon’s addiction and overdose problem. Measure 110 was designed to implement a more humane approach to handling drug addiction. While drug possession is typically charged as a misdemeanor, Oregon’s new law reduces the charge to a civil infraction. When the police observe an individual with a small amount of drugs, a citation and $100 fine is issued instead of an arrest. This fine can then be waived if the individual calls a support line and completes a “social service needs …
Narratives Of Reproductive Control In The American Eugenics Movement, Cassandra M. Provost
Narratives Of Reproductive Control In The American Eugenics Movement, Cassandra M. Provost
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In this paper, I will explore the eugenics movement as a pseudo-scientific political, social, and legal phenomenon which had a devastating historical impact on America’s most vulnerable women, as well as briefly discuss its residual effects on contemporary reproductive rights conversations, through the lens of literature. Using an interdisciplinary discourse and narrative analysis approach, I identify two distinct themes within the explored narratives: (1) the importance of a government’s attempt to override a person’s autonomy by destroying the person’s ability to reproduce, and (2) the impropriety of actions based on a negative attitude toward disabled or undesirable persons. In my …

Familismo And Familial Support On The Psychological Effects Of Traumatic Event Exposure In Latinx Populations In The Midwest, Elizabeth Miller
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Embedded within Latinx culture is Familismo, which serves as a source of strength and support for family members, while also shedding light on how familial support influences mental health. This study explores how Familismo and familial support impact the psychological effects of traumatic event exposure among Latinx populations in the Midwest. Analyzing data from 80 Latinx residents, I examined the relationship between familial support, traumatic event exposure, and mental health outcomes, focusing on depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Results indicated a negative association between familial support and PTSD symptoms, indicating that higher support levels correlated with reduced PTSD …

Internet Price, Speed, And Disparity: The Case Of Rural Healthcare Providers In The United States, Maysam Rabbani
Internet Price, Speed, And Disparity: The Case Of Rural Healthcare Providers In The United States, Maysam Rabbani
Department of Economics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Healthcare providers (HCPs) and patients are increasingly relying on telehealth services (healthcare provision over the internet) to provide and seek care. It turns internet access disparities into a health equity concern, i.e., poor internet access can contribute to poor health. In response, two federal programs in the United States – Healthcare Connect Fund and the Telecom Program – subsidize internet access for HCPs in rural or remote areas. I use a two-part pricing approach to examine the evolution of internet speed and price for HCPs that received internet subsidies during 2014–2020. I find that HCP internet is annually getting 30.77% …

The fashion industry has shown increasing interest in applying artificial intelligence (AI), yet there is a significant gap in exploring the potential of emerging diffusion-modeling-based AI image-generation systems for fashion design and commerce. Therefore, this study aims to assess the effectiveness of Midjourney, one such AI system, in both fashion design and related commerce applications. We employed the action research approach with the Functional, Expressive, and Aesthetic (FEA) Consumer Needs Model as the theoretical framework. Our research comprised three stages: refining an initial idea into well-defined textual design concepts, facilitating concept development, and validating the preceding observations and reflections by …

Impact Of Sodium Benzoate And A High Fat Diet On Kidney Of Mice., Anna Lipinski
Impact Of Sodium Benzoate And A High Fat Diet On Kidney Of Mice., Anna Lipinski
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Sodium Benzoate (SB) is a commonly utilized food preservative with potential therapeutic uses for neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and hepatic encephalopathy. Consumption of SB is generally regarded as safe (GRAS), by the Food and Drug Administration, at amounts of 0.1% by weight of food. However, previous reports indicate that SB exposure may induce histological alterations in kidney structures and promote oxidative stress. Thus, with increasing obesity rates and fatty diets, the effects of SB coupled to a high fat diet (HFD) remain to be determined. This study addressed the hypothesis that SB with a HFD will increase extracellular …

Early Life Experiences As Later Life Predictors For Criminality: Examination Of Public Criminal Records., Juliana S. Bastien
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Crime's detrimental impact on society, victims, families, and the justice system is undeniable. Thus, identifying factors that contribute to the perpetration of crime is essential to reduce the public health impact of crime. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are frequently found in community samples and are consistently associated with physical, psychological, and behavioral consequences. Research suggests that negative childhood experiences contribute to maladaptive behaviors, including delinquency and perpetration of crime later in life (Perez et al., 2018). The present study's purpose is to identify specific childhood experiences associated with criminality. The data presented on criminality and ACEs was collected from recruited …

ABSTRACT
Wilson’s disease (WD) is a rare disorder of copper metabolism, caused by a mutation in the ATPB7 gene, resulting in a defect in copper elimination leading to its accumulation in various organs, with the liver being the most common. Here, we describe a case of a 19-year-old boy who presented with a history of hallucinations and status epilepticus. Initial investigations were normal, but due to a rising trend in alanine transaminase (ALT), a slit lamp examination was performed, revealing Kayser-Fleischer (KF) rings in the eyes. The patient was diagnosed with WD due to the presence of these KF rings …
