“Educational Facials”: A Healing Tool For The Beautiful Struggle, Kari Kokka, Michelle Cody
Teaching and Learning Faculty Research
Critical educators of Color often work to support their students to work toward justice. However, because we live and work in a society imbued with white supremacy, cisheteropatriarchy, and additional systems of oppression, students and colleagues may resist efforts toward equity and racial justice, especially in mathematics education with women of Color instructors. In this paper, two mathematics educators, a Japanese American woman and a Black woman, elaborate a theory of educational facials, first coined by the second author in 2015. The theory of educational facials is an analytic tool for healing from and navigating harmful school climates. The authors …

Parental Satisfaction With Provider Communication And Interventions For Their Autistic, David Escorcia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in childhood impacting children globally and involving entire families. It has far-reaching effects on the U.S. healthcare system, communities, and school systems. Recent reports from the CDC reveal that one in 44 children is diagnosed with ASD, emphasizing the need for professional interventions to support the development and well-being of autistic children. However, the existing literature is sparse when it comes to understanding how therapies provided by licensed practitioners are perceived as successful from the standpoint of parents. To address this gap, I undertook secondary data analysis of the National Survey …

Analysis Of Sri Lanka’S Ethnic Inequality Through The Lens Of Polarities Of Democracy, Samanga Amarasinghe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sri Lanka, despite gaining independence in 1948, has been plagued by ethnic separatism, negatively impacting 29.9% of its ethnic minorities and causing violence and civil unrest throughout the nation. This has hindered the nation’s sustained growth and development. This study addresses Sri Lanka’s ethnic separatism by examining three stages of its history through the lens of the polarities of democracy model. The research question for the study is “How has the balance of polarities of democracy contributed or detracted from Sri Lanka’s pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial governance in terms of sustaining ethnic harmony?” The study took the form of a …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Studies on maize evolution and domestication are largely limited to the nuclear genomes, and the contribution of cytoplasmic genomes to selection and domestication of modern maize remains elusive. Maize cytoplasmic genomes have been classified into fertile (NA and NB) and cytoplasmic-nuclear male-sterility (CMS-S, CMS-C, and CMS-T) groups, but their contributions to modern maize breeding have not been systematically investigated.
Results: Here we report co-selection and convergent evolution between nuclear and cytoplasmic genomes by analyzing whole genome sequencing data of 630 maize accessions modern maize and its relatives, including 24 fully assembled mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes. We show that the …

Early detection of acute brain injury (ABI) is critical to intensive care unit (ICU) patient management and intervention to decrease major complications. Head CT (HCT) is the standard of care for the assessment of ABI in ICU patients; however, it has limited sensitivity compared to MRI. We retrospectively compared the ability of ultra-low-field portable MR (ULF-pMR) and head HCT, acquired within 24 h of each other, to detect ABI in ICU patients supported on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). A total of 17 adult patients (median age 55 years; 47% male) were included in the analysis. Of the 17 patients assessed, …

The Future Of Transnational Surrogacy: Where Do Italy And The Uk Stand Now?, Elleme Ko
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
The images of thousands of abandoned babies around the world gave the transnational commercial surrogacy market a global spotlight in 2020 when COVID-19 travel bans hit. As borders closed, intended parents or “fertility tourists” were unable to claim newborns born to surrogate mothers in Russia, Ukraine, the United States, and elsewhere. Babies were left for months in hospitals, orphanages, or in the hands of surrogacy agencies. “‘The image’—of the [commercial surrogacy] industry— ‘was really bad.’” Much attention has been paid to the effects of abortion regulation and access to contraception on women’s reproductive freedom. However, the politics of pregnancy through …

Cancer cells often exhibit resistance to apoptotic cell death, but they may be vulnerable to other types of cell death. Elucidating additional mechanisms that govern cancer cell death is crucial for developing new therapies. Our research identified cyclic AMP-responsive element-binding protein 3 (CREB3) as a crucial regulator and initiator of a unique cell death mechanism known as karyoptosis. This process is characterized by nuclear shrinkage, deformation, and the loss of nuclear components following nuclear membrane rupture. We found that the N-terminal domain (aa 1-230) of full-length CREB3 (CREB3-FL), which is anchored to the nuclear inner membrane (INM), interacts with lamins …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization poses significant challenges to wildlife, including amphibians. The present study uses a multi-parameter approach that incorporates veterinary techniques to investigate the current health status of the adult southern leopard frogs (Lithobates sphenocephalus) in Tampa Bay, Florida, amidst urban stressors including nutrient loading, fragmented habitats, and light and noise pollution. Novel values for fluctuating asymmetry (e.g., variation between left and right bilateral traits; FA), body condition (CF), stress (e.g., neutrophil:lymphocyte (N:L) ratio), and inflammation (e.g., neutrophil morphologic abnormalities, parasite load) are reported. I also investigate the relationship of overall health with ranavirus presence and hemoparasite infections. Ranavirus was absent in …

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections are a major concern for the ruminant industry worldwide and result in significant production losses. Naturally occurring polyparasitism and increasing drug resistance that potentiate disease outcomes are observed among the most prevalent GINs of veterinary importance. Within the five major taxonomic clades, clade Va represents a group of GINs that predominantly affect the abomasum or small intestine of ruminants. However, the development of effective broad-spectrum anthelmintics against ruminant clade Va GINs has been challenged by a lack of comprehensive druggable genome resources. Here, we first assembled draft genomes for three clade Va species (

Interrelationships Among Local Values Of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, Heat Index, And Adjusted Temperature, Andrea Giraldo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Occupational heat stress significantly affects outdoor workers who face challenges due to increased heat exposure. Because of the prevalence of heat illness, it is important to measure heat stress for outdoor workers. Monitoring occupational heat stress most often relies on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measure. Heat Index (HI) is a widely used measure to account for air temperature and humidity. Adjusted Temperature (Tadj) considers air temperature, humidity and estimates radiant heat. There is interest in predicting WBGT from HI and HI from WBGT. This study builds on previous USF research by Bernard and Iheanacho and Irvin to evaluate …

“Urban Renewal” Surrounding Florida Solar Plants: A Study On Low-Carbon Gentrification, Megan Amber Grove
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Renewable energy and sustainable living are growing trends in Florida as the state “develops” rural landscapes and “redevelops” urban ones, resulting in neighborhood changes, including displacement of low-income and minority populations (LIMP). Solar energy has not historically been a root cause of such changes, but in recent years it has increasingly accompanied neighborhood development which prioritizes the interests of the elite and middle class. As such, it has become a contributor to “urban renewal,” which must be addressed to avoid future LIMP displacement. This study used geospatial and data science technologies and techniques to empirically explore and analyze urbanization and …

A Differentially Methylated Region Analysis Between Three Disease States Of Major Depressive Disorder In Primarily African-American Cohorts, Lanie Katelynn Mullins
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and debilitating disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. MDD is a multifactorial disease with no established mechanism currently able to explain all facets of the disease or its etiology. Feedback loop mechanisms have been posited to explain the interactions of psychological and physical components of the disease etiology. Epigenetics, specifically DNA-methylation analyses, can shed light on the interaction between the within-person environment resulting from MDD symptomology, the persistence of the disease, and factors influencing remission. Here, a differentially methylated region analysis was conducted using samples derived from whole blood to interrogate the …

Tissue-resident macrophages play an important role in the local maintenance of homeostasis and immune surveillance. In the central nervous system (CNS), brain macrophages are anatomically divided into parenchymal microglia and non-parenchymal border-associated macrophages (BAMs). Among these immune cell populations, microglia have been well-studied for their roles during development as well as in health and disease. BAMs, mostly located in the choroid plexus, meningeal and perivascular spaces, are now gaining increased attention due to advancements in multi-omics technologies and genetic methodologies. Research on BAMs over the past decade has focused on their ontogeny, immunophenotypes, involvement in various CNS diseases, and potential …

UNLABELLED: Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, much effort has been dedicated to identifying effective antivirals against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A number of calpain inhibitors show excellent antiviral activities against SARS-CoV-2 by targeting the viral main protease (M
IMPORTANCE: Many efforts in small-molecule screens have been made to counter SARS-CoV-2 infection by targeting the viral main protease, the major element that processes viral proteins after translation. Here, we discovered that calpain inhibitors further block SARS-CoV-2 infection in a main protease-independent manner. We identified the host cysteine protease calpain-2 as an important positive …

Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) inhibitors such as ruxolitinib have become standard-of-care therapy for patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs); however, activation of alternate oncogenic pathways including nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NFκB) has limited durable response as single-agent therapy. With the rationale of targeting both pathways, we conducted a phase I dose escalation trial of pevonedistat in combination with ruxolitinib for the treatment of patients with myelofibrosis (NCT03386214). The primary objective was to assess the safety and tolerability of combination therapy with additional objectives of treatment efficacy and alterations of biomarkers. There were no dose-limiting toxicities observed with most …

Background: A traditional view is that stem cells (SCs) divide slowly. Meanwhile, both embryonic and pluripotent SCs display a shorter cell cycle duration (CCD) in comparison to more committed progenitors (CPs).
Methods: We examined the in vitro proliferation and cycling behavior of somatic adult human cells using live cell imaging of passage zero keratinocytes and single-cell RNA sequencing.
Results: We found two populations of keratinocytes: those with short CCD and protracted near exponential growth, and those with long CCD and terminal differentiation. Applying the ergodic principle, the comparative numbers of cycling cells in S phase in an enriched population of …

BACKGROUND: Culinary medicine, which has recently increased in popularity in medical education, incorporates food and nutritional interventions with principles of disease prevention and treatment. The ultimate goal is to improve overall health outcomes. The growing prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases indicates the need for physicians to have a deeper understanding of the interplay between nutrition and disease. Incorporating culinary medicine into medical education can equip medical students with the necessary skills and knowledge to promote better patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students' perceptions of their foundational knowledge of a culinary medicine course after completion of …

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) provides a measurement of tumor cellularity. We evaluated the potential of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values obtained from post-external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) DWI and prior to brachytherapy (BT) to predict for complete metabolic response (CMR) in bulky cervical cancer.
METHODS: Clinical and DWI (b value = 500 s/mm2) data were obtained from patients undergoing interstitial BT with high-risk clinical target volumes (HR-CTVs) > 30 cc. Volumes were contoured on co-registered T2 weighted images and 90th percentile ADC values were calculated. Patients were stratified by CMR (defined by PET-CT at three months post-BT). Relation of …

The COVID-19 outbreak has severely impacted global trade and cultural exchanges. Among its impacts are those on the international container shipping market, which is directly related to the national economy and trade and has naturally been affected. This market was in the doldrums during the pandemic. In general, COVID-19 has severely constrained shipping industry development in various countries. To this end, this study analyzes the frontier changes in the efficiency development of Taiwan's international container ports by collecting realistic operational data of the major container ports during the pandemic and combining them with measurements of the Malmquist Productivity Index and …

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations
When regional quarantine restrictions were rapidly implemented in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, knowledge workers were forced to vacate their traditional shared office spaces and transition to remote work environments. This unprecedented mass exodus from traditional in-person physical workplaces was facilitated by existing and new software and technology that allowed workers to remain connected and working. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences and perceptions of knowledge workers who experienced this transition to a full-time remote work environment. The study also examined how knowledge workers perceived work performance relative to their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were …
