Decreasing Influenza Vaccination Disparity Rates By Utilization Of Hotspot Deployments Of A Mobile Health Vehicle, Geneveve Deasis Tejada

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Influenza vaccination for Black/African American patients is historically lower than White patients across all healthcare organizations (Quinn, 2018). In the organization’s 2022 performance, only 13.98% of Black/African American patients ages 19 and older were vaccinated compared to 27.81% of White/Caucasian patients.

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was for Black/African American patients ages 19 and older receiving care from primary care clinics in Southeast San Diego (P), what is the impact of adding access to influenza vaccinations through hotspot-driven MHV deployments (I) compared to usual vaccination delivery in the medical office building (MOB) (C) on influenza …

Use Of Restrictive Housing In The Juvenile Justice System, Caleb D. Purvis, April Terry Apr 2024

Use Of Restrictive Housing In The Juvenile Justice System, Caleb D. Purvis, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

In recent years, the term solitary confinement was replaced with restrictive housing (RH) as it had a less negative tone. However, the terms both represent the same process of isolating individuals in cells with nearly no contact with others. Restrictive housing has many negative effects, including, but not limited to deteriorating mental health and increased rates of recidivism. Such practices are not limited to the adult system as incarcerated youth are also subjected to various forms of restrictive housing (e.g., protective custody, disciplinary and administrative segregation). While those who oppose the use of RH call this cruel and unusual punishment, …

Implementation Of A Healthy Skin Committee And Education On The Number Of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Laura Viana Apr 2024

Implementation Of A Healthy Skin Committee And Education On The Number Of Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries, Laura Viana

How Much Does It Cost To Operate Tiny Home Villages For People Experiencing Homelessness, Celeste Benitez, Cooper Conway, Declan Maddern

School of Public Policy Capstones

Los Angeles is in a homelessness crisis. Millions of dollars are poured into preventing its causes and curtailing the increased medical costs and crime rates that stem from it. The solutions vary, but one new solution in the form of tiny home villages hopes to provide a cheap and effective way to get people experiencing homelessness off the streets.

In 2021, Los Angeles began opening tiny home villages, also referred to as cabin communities, for unhoused people during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are currently 11 tiny home villages in Los Angeles, operated in a joint effort between the government and …

Background: Antigen detection in Taenia solium cysticercosis confirms viable infection in the intermediate host (either pig or human). The reference B158/B60 monoclonal antibody (mAb)-based Ag-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has acceptable levels of sensitivity and specificity in human neurocysticercosis with multiple brain cysts, although its sensitivity is lower in cases with single brain cysts, whereas in porcine cysticercosis the assay specificity is affected by its frequent cross-reaction with Taenia hydatigena, another common cestode found in pigs. Our group has produced 21 anti-T. solium mAbs reacting against antigens of the whole cyst, vesicular fluid, and secretory/excretory products, identifying TsW8/TsW5 as the most …

Agricultural Innovation And Health Risks: The Role Of Carbon Nanotubes., M. Thakur, D. Mutyala, N. Bidarimath, R. Kondati, S. Batra

Student Presentations

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as a revolutionary tool in agriculture with the potential to boost crop yields, improve resource management, and promote sustainable farming practices. They excel in soil remediation, helping restore contaminated lands, and enable real-time monitoring of soil conditions, plant health, and environmental parameters. However, concerns have arisen about CNT exposure for agricultural workers due to their large surface area and pollutant-binding capabilities. Functionalizing CNTs with chemical groups like carboxyl or amine can alter their properties. Nevertheless, reports suggest heightened sensitivities to allergens, smoke, or pollutants in the presence of CNTs. To address these concerns, preliminary studies …

Pentachlorophenol has been in use as a pesticide, fungicide, herbicide, and insecticide since 1936. The US government outlawed PCP in 1984 due to its carcinogenic and toxic effects, however, 36 million utility poles treated with PCP still persist in US, greatly increasing the likelihood of exposure. Humans can be exposed to PCP through direct volatilization from the wood surface, either through skin contact or inhalation. Several case studies have demonstrated increased risk of exposure to PCP and its metabolites during farming- specifically in fencing, treating timber and sawmills. PANoptosis involving three key programmed cell death modes-pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis plays …

Incarcerated Workers Will Be Heard: Protecting The Right To Unionize Prisoners Through Dignity, Samuel Richter Apr 2024

Incarcerated Workers Will Be Heard: Protecting The Right To Unionize Prisoners Through Dignity, Samuel Richter

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This Comment posits that incarcerated workers possess an inherent right to unionize pursuant to human dignity. Centering dignity in this discussion highlights the ways in which prisoners’ unions secure the economic and political conditions needed to express their autonomy and foster rehabilitation. By reviewing the historical successes and missteps of the incarcerated workers’ labor movement in the United States, this Comment demonstrates that an appreciation for dignity is crucial to prevent factional violence between incarcerated people on the one hand and the over-professionalization of prisoner organization on the other. Recognizing that unionization is a matter of dignity, not free speech …

Some Wounds Don’T Heal: Spirit Assassination Attempts: Tools Of White Supremacy, Karen Louise Douglas

Dissertations

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to study the effects of spirit assassination attempts and whether their influence is enduring throughout life and can be linked to my emotional, mental, and physical health. In 1987, the term spirit murdering was coined by Williams to describe the everyday encounters with racism and discrimination, which can evoke a profound sense of powerlessness, hopelessness, and sadness in Black people. I use the term spirit assassination attempts to describe the repeated, intentional words, body language, looks, and actions intended to remind Black people of their societal position intended to destroy hope, joy, and …

The Anti-Racist Imperative Of Infancy, Laura Cohen Apr 2024

The Anti-Racist Imperative Of Infancy, Laura Cohen

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In 2019, a widely disseminated video of the arrest of a six-year-old girl in her Florida elementary school provoked outrage across the country. The footage shows the girl sobbing as an armed police officer in full uniform and bullet-proof vest handcuffs and leads her from the principal’s office to a waiting patrol car. Her crime was having a temper tantrum in class after a sleepless night. When it was revealed that another six-year-old was arrested at the same school by the same officer on the same day and for similar reasons, media pundits and the general public debated questions of …

Learning Law In Elementary And High School: Innovating Civics Education For A More Empowered Citizenry, Ariel Liberman, Michael Broyde

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

A principal objective of the public school system in a democracy is to promote societal cohesion by way of preparing students for civic engagement. There exists a founding belief that a democratic nation ought to be composed of educated activists, run by innovators, and kept in check by involved citizens. For, indisputably, the democratic experiment—our values, our institutions—can only be upheld anew with each generation on the backs of critique, reinvention, and reinvigoration. But, as so many have mentioned when discussing the civics education paradigm, the increase in educational opportunities and the marked expansion of our school system has not …

Reproductive Rights And Felony Disenfranchisement: The New Frontier Of An Old Voter Suppression Tactic, Jessie Rubini Apr 2024

Reproductive Rights And Felony Disenfranchisement: The New Frontier Of An Old Voter Suppression Tactic, Jessie Rubini

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Voter suppression and anti-abortion, anti-reproductive care efforts are mutually reinforcing, working together to diminish political participation, especially for women of color. I argue that politicians could use the Dobbs decision to further suppress Black voters, specifically Black women voters, by prosecuting abortions as felonies. The effect would be disenfranchisement of thousands of people. This Comment covers the connected histories of voting rights and abortion rights in America. The first section of this Comment will briefly cover the history of voting rights in America with a focus on racial discrimination. The second section will cover one voter suppression, felony disenfranchisement. Finally, …

Juvenile Waiver: Problems And Soultions, Daniel Bechle, April Terry Apr 2024

Juvenile Waiver: Problems And Soultions, Daniel Bechle, April Terry

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The juvenile waiver was established in 1966 with the landmark case Kent v. United States. This case deemed it constitutional to transfer youth from the juvenile court to the adult criminal court, and significant repercussions have since ensued. One issue includes the notable 3.5% increase in the recidivism rates for youth subjected to the waiver (Augustn, 2017a). The purpose of these waivers was to impose harsher punishments, particularly for serious offenses like murder, and this "tough on crime" approach gained momentum in the 1990s. Presently, public sentiment supports such measures, as evidenced by a survey indicating a majority favoring stricter …
