Tissue Doppler Imaging, Pulmonary Haemodynamics And Conventional Echocardiographic Indices For Early Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Prediction In Preterm Infants: A Prospective Observational Feasibility Study, Wisam Muhsen, Joanne Hosking, Jos M. Latour, Eirik Nestaas
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background/Objectives: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains a major complication of prematurity, yet no prediction model incorporating echocardiographic assessment of right ventricle (RV) function and pulmonary haemodynamics exists. This study aimed to identify clinical and echocardiographic candidate variables of BPD to inform the design of a future multicentre study for BPD prediction model construction. Methods: This prospective observational feasibility study recruited preterm infants born before 32 weeks of gestation. Echocardiographic scans were performed at Day 5 and Day 9 postnatally. Candidate variables across six domains, clinical, RV systolic, diastolic, and global function, pulmonary-haemodynamics, and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) variables, were evaluated using …

Progressive Cardiac Phenotypes And Reduced Reversibility From Long-Term Cugexp Rna Expression In A Dm1 Mouse Model, Rong-Chi Hu, Mohammadreza Tabary, Xander Ht Wehrens, Thomas A Cooper

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by an expanded CTG repeat in the DMPK gene, resulting in mutant transcripts that form expanded CUG (CUGexp) RNA foci and sequester muscleblind-like (MBNL) RNA-binding proteins. DM1 is multisystemic, with progressive worsening of disease manifestations in affected tissues. Disease progression is attributed to somatic expansion of the CTG repeats with age, resulting in production of CUGexp RNA with enhanced intrinsic toxicity due to increased MBNL sequestration. To determine the degree to which cardiac disease progression can occur independently of repeat expansion, we used a transgenic DM1 mouse model with inducible heart-specific expression of …

Introduction: Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic for treatment-resistant schizophrenia but remains underutilized due to safety concerns and monitoring complexity. Recent discontinuation of the Clozapine Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program reduced regulatory barriers but shifted responsibility for monitoring to clinicians. Psychiatry residents may lack adequate training and confidence to prescribe clozapine safely in this new context. The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of a structured educational intervention on psychiatry residents’ knowledge of clozapine prescribing and management.
Methods: This study was a single-institution quality improvement study using a pre-post design. Participants were psychiatry residents from …

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) lacks FDA-approved treatments despite various small molecules contributing to phenotypic rescue in the FMR1 knockout (KO) mouse model. Translation from the mouse model has been hampered by phenotypic heterogeneity that contributes to participation barriers among participants who are most affected and may be unable to regularly visit the research laboratory. The current study utilized a crossover design to test the acute neural and behavioral effects of a single 10 mg dose of gaboxadol and the reliability of electroencephalography (EEG) and behavioral data collected in participant homes compared to the clinic.
METHODS: Ten adult males with …

BACKGROUND: There is limited real-word data comparing efficacy of low dose upadacitinib (UPA) to high dose UPA as maintenance therapy for ulcerative colitis (UC).
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study utilizing the U.S. Collaborative Network in adults ≥18 years old with UC who initiated UPA 15 mg compared to 30 mg for maintenance therapy between April 2022 and December 2023. The primary outcome was a composite of intravenous steroid use, oral steroid use, or colectomy from 12 to 60 weeks from the index UPA prescription. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed for demographics, co-morbid conditions, laboratory, and IBD medication …

Nature As The Foundation: A Shift In Pedagogy, Mary Moroney-Fernandez
The Cicadian
Somewhere in the United States right now, a child is sitting beneath fluorescent lights while the world outside continues without her. This paper argues that her confinement is not accidental, but rather theoretical. Examining the divergent frameworks of Friedrich Fröbel and Jean Piaget, it traces how American public schooling absorbed a vision of learning organized around cognitive individualism while displacing Fröbel's relational vision of child and nature. Drawing on reflection, historical analysis, and research, this paper contends that lasting reform requires confronting the foundational assumptions that built the classroom in the first place.

The Cicadian
Nature writing is an important pathway for preservice teachers’ engagement with science that can help more students recognize themselves as knowers and doers of science and better connect them and their students to the world around them. Nature writing allows all students, including those from non-dominant cultural backgrounds, to include their experiences and backgrounds in their science education. Nature writing also affords all students an opportunity to better understand the natural world they are a part of. Nature writing is typically written in first person and characterized as scientific observation of the natural world through a personal reflective lens. In …

Corporal punishment (CP) in U.S. public schools, defined as "the use of physical force with the intention of causing a child to experience pain so as to correct their misbehavior" (Gershoff & Font, 2016), remains legal in 17 states despite mounting evidence of its ineffectiveness and disproportionate harm to marginalized students. This study presents survey data from 94 Arkansas public school educators, examining their knowledge of legality, personal and indirect experiences with CP, perceptions of its effectiveness, and attitudes toward its continued use. Analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics, with reverse coding applied to the negative-impact Likert items so …

Photophysical Properties Of Tunable Dox-Ir820 Chemo-Ptt Combination Nanomedicine, Eshaal Nadeem, Fatima Abbas, Noureen Siraj
Research and Creative Works Expo
Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States, underscoring the urgent need for more effective treatment options. Nanotechnology offers innovative solutions through combination nanomedicines that can integrate multiple therapeutic mechanisms into a single platform. In this study, we developed aqueous nanoparticles (NPs) composed of a combined chemotherapeutic agent and photothermal therapy drug,[DOX][IR820], using a simple reprecipitation method. By adjusting different parameters, we tuned NP size and evaluated how this influenced their photophysical behavior, such as absorbance and fluorescence emission, and photothermal therapeutic activity such as light-to-heat conversion efficiency. These properties were analyzed to identify the optimal …
