Sunlight Solutions: Optimizing 25(Oh)D Concentrations In Global Maternal Health Strategies To Improve Maternal Outcomes And Preserve Healthcare Resources, Beth Sanford

Global Advocacy

In 2020, the World Health Organization identified the Global maternal mortality rate was a staggering 223 per 100,000. As a result, the United Nations created Sustainable Development Goal 3.1, with the hope of "reducing the global MMR to less than 70 per 100 000 births, with no country having a maternal mortality rate of more than twice the global average" by 2030.

Optimizing 25(OH)D serum concentrations to a minimum of 40 ng/mL (100 nmol/L) has been proven to be a safe, affordable, and effective way to improve perinatal outcomes such as decreasing maternal mortality as well as morbidities such as …

Global Advocacy

There are a plethora of health effects connected to climate change's impacts on weather, food, water, air, heat, vectors, allergens, and more. As a trusted voice, nurses are in an opportune position to advocate for climate action and its related impacts on health. Whilst, the topic of climate change should be integrated more consistently through curricula for nurses. With that in mind, The Nurses Climate Challenge, a campaign of the ANHE and Healthcare Without Harm, was launched in 2018. Its initial aim of engaging 50,000 nurses was met, and the initiative is being transferred to ANHE this month.

Porphyrin Overdrive In Cancer: Unraveling The Mechanisms And Therapeutic Potential, Pravin D. Meshram Jun 2024

Porphyrin Overdrive In Cancer: Unraveling The Mechanisms And Therapeutic Potential, Pravin D. Meshram

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The increased understanding of cancer cell metabolism has shown options for novel treatment strategies. This thesis looks at the role of heme metabolism, specifically "porphyrin overdrive," in cancer progression and treatment. Cancer cells are hypermetabolic and rely on heme synthesis. When treated with δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), they abnormally accumulate heme intermediates. This metabolic weakness presents an opportunity to exploit heme synthesis in targeted cancer therapy. In this study, we suggest a "Bait and Kill" technique that uses exogenous ALA to induce protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) buildup in cancer cells, making them more susceptible to oxidative stress. We investigate the possibility of …

Solid organ transplantation mobilizes myeloid cells, including monocytes and macrophages, which are central protagonists of allograft rejection. However, myeloid cells can also be functionally reprogrammed by perioperative costimulatory blockade to promote a state of transplantation tolerance. Transplantation tolerance holds promise to reduce complications from chronic immunosuppression and promote long-term survival in transplant recipients. We sought to identify different mediators of transplantation tolerance by performing single-cell RNA sequencing of acute rejecting or tolerized cardiac allografts. This led to the unbiased identification of the transcription factor, hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-2α, in a subset of tolerogenic monocytes. Using flow cytometric analyses and mice …

Tumor cell plasticity contributes to intratumoral heterogeneity and therapy resistance. Through cell plasticity, some lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells transform into neuroendocrine (NE) tumor cells. However, the mechanisms of NE cell plasticity remain unclear. CRACD (capping protein inhibiting regulator of actin dynamics), a capping protein inhibitor, is frequently inactivated in cancers. CRACD knockout (KO) is sufficient to de-repress NE-related gene expression in the pulmonary epithelium and LUAD cells. In LUAD mouse models, Cracd KO increases intratumoral heterogeneity with NE gene expression. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis showed that Cracd KO-induced NE cell plasticity is associated with cell de-differentiation and stemness-related pathway activation. The …

The B cell receptor (BCR) signals together with a multi-component co-receptor complex to initiate B cell activation in response to antigen binding. Here, we take advantage of peroxidase-catalyzed proximity labeling combined with quantitative mass spectrometry to track co-receptor signaling dynamics in Raji cells from 10 s to 2 h after BCR stimulation. This approach enables tracking of 2,814 proximity-labeled proteins and 1,394 phosphosites and provides an unbiased and quantitative molecular map of proteins recruited to the vicinity of CD19, the signaling subunit of the co-receptor complex. We detail the recruitment kinetics of signaling effectors to CD19 and identify previously uncharacterized …

Who Helps Tsimane Children And Adults?, Eric Schniter, Daniel K. Cummings, Paul L. Hooper, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Hillard S. Kaplan, Michael D. Gurven

ESI Working Papers

We examine various forms of helping behavior among Tsimane Amerindians of Bolivia, focusing on the provision of shelter, childcare, food, sickcare, cultural influence, and traditional story knowledge. Kin selection theory traditionally explains nepotistic nurturing of youth by closely related kin. However, less attention has been given to understanding the help provided by individuals without close genetic relatedness. To explain who provides various forms of help, we evaluate support for several predictions derived from kin selection theory. Our results show that helpers who are most often closely related and from an older generation tend to provide more costly forms of help …

Dorsal Raphe Neurons Integrate The Values Of Reward Amount, Delay, And Uncertainty In Multi-Attribute Decision-Making, Yang-Yang Feng, Ethan S Bromberg-Martin, Ilya E Monosov

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is implicated in psychiatric disorders that feature impaired sensitivity to reward amount, impulsivity when facing reward delays, and risk-seeking when confronting reward uncertainty. However, it has been unclear whether and how DRN neurons signal reward amount, reward delay, and reward uncertainty during multi-attribute value-based decision-making, where subjects consider these attributes to make a choice. We recorded DRN neurons as monkeys chose between offers whose attributes, namely expected reward amount, reward delay, and reward uncertainty, varied independently. Many DRN neurons signaled offer attributes, and this population tended to integrate the attributes in a manner that reflected …
