BACKGROUND: There have been several recent advances in the care of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including the use of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs). There are very few data reporting the outcomes of these treatments in real-world experience. The aim of this retrospective study is to report the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors, finerenone, and their combination in CKD patients in our community-based setting.
METHODS: Ninety-eight patients with CKD with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) between 25 and 90 mL/min per 1.73 m2 and a urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥ …

Emotional Reactivity And Recognition Deficits In Individuals With Callous-Unemotional (Cu) Traits: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis, Emily C. Kemp
Emotional Reactivity And Recognition Deficits In Individuals With Callous-Unemotional (Cu) Traits: A Multilevel Meta-Analysis, Emily C. Kemp
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Youth and adults with antisocial behavior present a significant mental health concern. Elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits, characterized by deficient empathy and remorse, distinguish clinically important subgroups of antisocial individuals who present with more severe behavior and distinct cognitive-affective characteristics that may help to explain the underlying causes of their antisocial behavior and inform more effective treatments. Specifically, two mechanisms theorized to underlie the development of elevated CU traits by way of atypical empathy development are deficient reactivity to and recognition of others’ emotions. Though a substantive literature base reports associations between CU traits and emotional processing deficits, significant inconsistencies remain. …
The Collaborative Assessment And Management Of Suicdality As A Single Session Intervention For Patients Admitted To Inpatient Psychiatric Care For Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors, D Nicolas Oakey-Frost
The Collaborative Assessment And Management Of Suicdality As A Single Session Intervention For Patients Admitted To Inpatient Psychiatric Care For Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors, D Nicolas Oakey-Frost
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Inpatient psychiatric care is a critical contact point for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). The Zero-Suicide framework provides useful scaffolding for improving suicide prevention within inpatient psychiatry (i.e., Assess, Intervene, and Monitor [AIM-SP]). Available evidence suggests instruments are available for evidence informed risk assessment but are hindered by low construct validity and a limited collaborative approach. Additionally, extant interventions do not typically target STB and are not optimized for inpatient psychiatric care. The Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) meets the criteria of the Zero-Suicide Framework and is often leveraged as a single session intervention (SSI) but …

Functional Studies Of Dcaf14 In Replication Fork Stability And Genome Integrity, Neysha Tirado-Class
Functional Studies Of Dcaf14 In Replication Fork Stability And Genome Integrity, Neysha Tirado-Class
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The response to replication stress is critical for ensuring the stability of replication forks and preserving genome integrity. To aid this response, several factors are recruited to stalled replication forks to prevent irreversible collapse of the replication machinery. Replication fork proteomic analyses of stalled forks reveal enrichment of DCAF14, a component of the Cullin4-RING (CRL4) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, that mediates replication fork protection by blocking nuclease-mediated digestion of nascent DNA. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism by which DCAF14 functions in the context of replication stress. Notably, loss of function mutations in DCAF14 are associated with a …

Rural Black Women’S Self-Help Activism In The Arkansas Delta, Local Heritage, And Global Resonance: Mrs. Gertha Bailey Trice And The Lee County Self-Help Project, Swity Sultana Monni
Student Theses and Dissertations
In the mid-to-late twentieth century, through outstanding and transformative leadership, rural Black women activists in the Arkansas Delta worked to confront significant problems facing their communities, in the contexts of health, education, and social justice; their efforts were often apolitical in nature, at least overtly. These women went beyond the demands of many mid-twentieth-century civil rights activists to create spaces to articulate and demand human rights, broadly conceived. This in-depth study explores the community activism of Gertha Bailey Trice of Lee County, Arkansas, who engaged in broadly defined African American self-help traditions through her work with the Lee County Self …

Background/aim: Alzheimer’s disease (AD), one of the most common health issues, is characterized by memory loss, severe behavioral disorders, and eventually death. Despite many studies, there are still no drugs that can treat AD or stop it from progressing. Previous in vitro tests showed that O-demethyl galantamine (ODG) might have a therapeutic potential owing to its 10 times higher acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity than galantamine (GAL). Materials and methods: We aimed to assess effect of ODG on a molecular level 12-month-old 5xFAD Alzheimer’s mouse model. To this end, following the administrations of ODG and GAL, used as a positive control, protein …

BackgroundNanocarrier-based systems have cultivated significant improvements in prostate cancer therapy. However, the efforts are still limited in clinical applicability, and more research is required for the development of effective strategies. Here, we describe a novel nanoliposomal system for targeted apoptotic gene delivery to prostate cancer.MethodsPoly (2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOx) dioleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) nanoliposomes were conjugated with the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeting peptide GRFLTGGTGRLLRIS (P563) and loaded with BikDDA, a mutant form of the proapoptotik Bik. We selected 22Rv1 cells with moderate upregulation of PSMA to test the in vitro uptake, cell death, and in vivo anti-cancer activity of our formulation, P563-PEtOx-DOPE-BikDDA.ResultsBikDDA was …

Small extracellular vesicles (SEVs) are known to have an impact on the physiological circumstances of the target cells, are a critical component of cell-to-cell communication and have been implicated in a variety of diseases. Although it has been proposed that edible plant-derived nanoparticles have effect on communication with mammalian cells, the influence of these nanoparticles on cancer cell development has yet to be explored. In order to characterize small extracellular vesicles obtained from garlic, specific SEV surface markers and antibodies and size detections were performed by using scanning electron microscopy and nanoparticle tracking analysis. Self And Tell: Exploring Identity Through Music, Logen Crandall
Honors Theses
My honors thesis is a five-song EP titled ‘self and tell’. It is considered an EP (Extended Play) because it is longer than one song but shorter than an album. As an English: Creative Writing major, I wanted to write something for my thesis that truly excited me. However, I was ignited by the thought of writing an essay, play, collection of poems, or work of fiction. As someone who has always had a passion for music and singing, I instead chose to use my knowledge of poetry and storytelling to write lyrics that followed a central theme from one …

Prostate cancer has heterogeneous growth patterns, and its prognosis is the poorest when it progresses to a neuroendocrine phenotype. Using bioinformatic analysis, we evaluated RNA expression of neuroendocrine genes in a panel of five different cancer types: prostate adenocarcinoma, breast cancer, kidney chromophobe, kidney renal clear cell carcinoma and kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma. Our results show that specific neuroendocrine genes are significantly dysregulated in these tumors, suggesting that they play an active role in cancer progression. Among others, synaptophysin (SYP), a conventional neuroendocrine marker, is upregulated in prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD) and breast cancer (BRCA). Our analysis shows that SYP …

Background: The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence among transport workers in sub-Saharan Africa remains high, estimated at as high as 9.9% in western Uganda compared with the national prevalence of 5.4%. The prevalence of HIV among transport workers has been partly attributed to the level of knowledge regarding HIV prevention, perceived HIV risk, and stigma. Accordingly, these have been linked to high-risk HIV transmission behaviours that increase the chances of acquiring HIV among adults. Therefore, this study investigated the predictors of HIV knowledge, perceived HIV risk, and stigma among transport workers in Mbarara city in southwestern Uganda.

Nursing Student Perceptions Of Presence In A Virtual Learning Environment: A Qualitative Description Study, Jason R. Thrift
Dissertations
Multifaceted approaches to learning are used for educating student nurses. One common teaching modality in nursing education, simulation, provides hands-on experiences in a safe environment to prepare student nurses for professional roles. High quality simulation standards recommend an engaging immersive experience, with physical, emotional, and conceptual fidelity to clinical practice. Presence is the perception of being there in a simulation as if it were real. Studies have reported improved learning outcomes with increased sense of presence. A simulation modality seldom used in nursing education is virtual reality simulation (VRSim) a three dimensional, immersive experience. VR-Sim with head mounted visual and …

Veterans Justice Outreach Program, Risk Of Recidivism, And Justice-Involved Veterans, Melody C. Weathers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
To date, no study has examined whether the Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) program influences recidivism once a justice-involved veteran (JIV) completes the program. Nor has a study examined the diagnoses and comorbidities between a JIV’s propensity for recidivism following separation from the VJO. One of the VJO program’s goals has been to end JIVs' contact with the criminal justice system. This study utilized a generic qualitative design that aimed to explore JIVs who received treatment from the VJO and whether there was an effect on their risk of recidivism. Additional elements for exploration included posttraumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain disorder, …
Natural Hazards Triggering Technological Disasters: Source Identification, Vulnerability, And Evaluation Of Emergency Preparedness In A Southern California City, Lisa Peumsang
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Natural hazards triggering technological disasters (natech) events exist around the world and affect people, infrastructure, the economy, and environment but are not often considered for local hazard mitigation and emergency preparedness plans. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify (a) the natech event vulnerability of the target city, which is in the western United States, and potential sources for these events and (b) the extent to which the city’s hazard mitigation and emergency operations plans addressed natech events. The vulnerability assessment was performed through the lens of network risk theory and involved secondary data analysis of publicly …
