Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are a novel class of anticoagulants. They include rivaroxaban, apixaban, edoxaban, and dabigatran. Benefits of DOACs over many older anticoagulants include oral administration, quicker onset of action, less monitoring requirements, and fewer drug interactions. Since the DOACs were first introduced, their use has increased tremendously. This article aims to help providers become more familiar with DOACs and the specific factors that may impact prescribing practices. Several drugs used for the reversal of DOACs will also be discussed. Lastly, the article will describe certain situations in which warfarin is preferred over DOACs.

Since its emergence in late 2019, Covid-19 has had many devastating economic, social, mental, and physical health consequences and caused millions of deaths worldwide over the course of the pandemic. While most cases are mild and symptoms resolve within a couple of weeks, some Covid patients' symptoms can last for multiple weeks, months, or even years after contracting the virus, and these long-lasting symptoms have been identified as Long-Covid. Psychiatric symptoms have been associated with Long-Covid in addition to physical symptoms, and impaired cognitive functioning, sleep abnormalities, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and psychosis have been observed in Long-Covid patients. Given the …

Introduction: Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection has spread globally and resulted in more than one million deaths in the US as of July 2023, where it has been more severe in psychiatric wards. State hospitals are a particularly transmissible location for COVID-19, and the medications that psychiatric patients typically utilize may contribute to the incidence of comorbidities including obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Studies have found that patients with preexisting mental health disorders and comorbidities tend to have worse COVID-19 outcomes. Thus, we examine the mortality and comorbidity rate of patients, and discuss how psychiatric medications may contribute to the risk of …

The coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak caused widespread disruption. The World Health Organization has recommended wearing face masks, along with other public health measures, such as social distancing, following medical guidelines, and thermal scanning, to reduce transmission, reduce the burden on healthcare systems, and protect population groups. However, wearing a mask, which acts as a barrier or shield to reduce transmission of infection from infected individuals, hides most facial features, such as the nose, mouth, and chin, on which face detection systems depend, which leads to the weakness of these systems. This paper aims to provide essential insights for researchers and …

This research is a study of the articulation «no infection» contained in the Hadith, as it deals with the following: the verbal context, and especially the character of negation (no) which can hold the meaning of exclusion or prohibition, and exclusion is likely to banish existence and potentially deny the effect of the disease itself without God’s will. In addition, what may appear in the Hadith as a conflict or allocation. Did our Prophet- peace be upon him- want to correct pre-Islamic concepts that prevailed at the time of his mission, or is it an order to not infect others? …

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is an opportunistic pathogen that lives on surfaces and skin and can cause serious infections inside the body. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are part of the innate immune system and can eliminate pathogens, including bacteria and viruses, and are a promising alternative to antibiotics. Although studies have reported that AMP-functionalized hydrogels can prevent bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation, AMP dosing and the combined effects of multiple AMPs are not well understood. Here, three AMPs with different antibacterial properties were synthesized and the soluble minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of each AMP against methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant …
