Woman And Death In Nineteenth Century America, Kathleen Boswell
Woman And Death In Nineteenth Century America, Kathleen Boswell
History in the Making
The nineteenth century saw a shift in the perceptions of death, as historians have noted how Victorian peoples (1837-1901) had a strange fixation with morbidity that we today find odd. This article seeks to understand these fixations with death within the context of nineteenth-century femininity, or what has been termed the Cult of Domesticity. As the topic of women and death is sparse, the examinations of leading death historians are compared while some new historical perspectives are used to address some gaps between death and domesticity. The context of Victorian societal norms is examined, along with popular mourning practices and …

Decolonizing Queer Epistemology: Boys Love And Cultural Imaginary From The Global Majority, Roland Sintos Coloma
Decolonizing Queer Epistemology: Boys Love And Cultural Imaginary From The Global Majority, Roland Sintos Coloma
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
This article aims to decolonize queer epistemology in order to challenge the hegemony of white/eurocentric LGBTQ histories, cultures, and representations as the universal and normalized standard of queer and trans life and sociality. Toward this objective, it analyzes whitestream queer epistemology, and notes its limits that do not account for its inclusions and exclusions, especially in relation to race, geography, and methodological (homo)nationalism. It draws attention to the works of queer and trans theorists, researchers, and educators from the global majority, especially the growing scholarship on LGBTQ education outside of the United States, to point out a significant gap in …

Ncaa Division I Collegiate Athletes’ Motivational Perspectives Pertaining To Their Academic And Athletic Roles, Jeongwon Choi, Allison B. Smith
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Research continues to point to collegiate athletes need to navigate their conflicting roles of academics and athletics simultaneously to be successful in their collegiate experience. Thus, in order to traverse these dual roles, collegiate athletes need to be both intrinsically and extrinsically motivated to balance both academic and athletic responsibilities. The purpose of this study is to explore and understand collegiate athletes’ perceptions of motivation through a qualitative design based on Self Determination Theory (SDT). Ten collegiate athletes who competed at the NCAA Division I level in a variety of sports were interviewed for this study. Three meaningful themes emerged …

An Examination Of Sport Retirement Through Concept Analysis Of Occupational Retirement, Andrea Cota Powell, Patti J. Berg, Andrew C. Pickett, Moses N. Ikiugu, Whitney Lucas Molitor
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Occupational retirement is a major life transition that involves extensive planning, preparation, and coping strategies. Concept analysis was completed to explore adaptation to occupational retirement as a way to further understand sport retirement. Thirty-nine occupational-related articles were included in the final analysis. The primary antecedent to occupational retirement is financial stability, followed by age and family life. Antecedents to sport retirement include graduation, exhaustion of NCAA eligibility, and possibly injury. The antecedents are unique to each type of retirement, but the consequences are similar. Retirees of both types often experience feeling of loss, grief, depression, and identity crisis while adjusting …

The Role Of Athlete Identity, Motivation, And Satisfaction On The Mental Well-Being Of Division I Collegiate Athletes, Ronnie D. Watson, Khirey B. Walker, Jean-Charles Lebeau, Robert Turick, Matthew Allen Moore, James Johnson
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Concerns about the mental well-being of collegiate athletes, given high reports of psychological issues, have prompted a survey-based study among NCAA Division I student-athletes. The research explores the influence of athlete identity, motivation, and satisfaction on mental well-being, and how it varies among different NCAA classifications (i.e., G5, FCS, DI-NO). Instruments used include the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), the Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire (ASQ), the Student-Athlete’s Motivation Towards Sports and Academics Questionnaire (SAMSAQ), and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). The secondary aim investigates differences in these factors across Division I competition levels (i.e., G5, FCS, DI-NO). This study provides …

“The Game Was Ruined For Me There:” Examining The Mental Health Byproducts Of The Transfer Portal And Nil On Student-Athletes, Ethan Madden, Brendan O'Hallarn
Journal of Athlete Development and Experience
Two rule changes have brought seismic changes to collegiate sports in the United States—the right for college athletes to monetize their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), and the Transfer Portal for athletes looking to switch schools. Qualitative interviews with 16 college athletes, explored the mental health byproducts of these new athlete opportunities. The interviews suggest that many athletes are hesitant to participate in NIL due to a lack of guidance. The study also found that college athletes believe entering the Transfer Portal to be a highly stressful experience, comparing the process to being recruited out of high school. However, the …

Balancing Climate Policies And Economic Development In The Mediterranean Countries, Chiara Castelli, Marta Castellini, Camilla Gusperti, Veronica Lupi, Sergio Vergalli
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The goal of this work is to improve the spatial representation of the Regional Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy (RICE), in its ’99 version, focusing on the Mediterranean countries, while also updating the calibration to the base year 2015. We evaluate the impact of climate damages and temperature changes in several scenarios, drawing comparisons across regions. Thanks to the theoretical structure of the model, which considers energy as an explicit input factor, we examine macroeconomic and energy indicators across regions. We find that a general slow down in economic growth is needed to decrease emissions and keep …

Utilizing a phenomenological approach, qualitative data was collected through interviews with recent high school graduates to assess the impact of authentic learning on their post-secondary trajectories. …
Occupational Therapy & Dyslexia Curriculum, Tiara Ortiz
Occupational Therapy & Dyslexia Curriculum, Tiara Ortiz
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
My capstone project, a truly innovative endeavor, was conducted in a school-based setting for children with dyslexia. I developed educational materials, distinct in their approach, for teachers and occupational therapists to implement individually or in a group setting. These materials comprise a curriculum that explicitly targets executive functioning and visual interventions, a novel and exciting approach to dyslexia treatment. The project was successfully implemented in the Bridge Program at the Christ School in Orlando, Florida, a private school program tailored to children with dyslexia. I was mentored by Dominque Kiefer, OTD, OTR/L, BCP, the Bridge Program's school-based occupational therapist.

Improving Hospital Performance Using Technological Performance Strategies To Reduce Misdiagnoses, Carlistus Nnabuife
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The burgeoning challenge of patient disease misdiagnosis presents a significant obstacle, important to hospital administrators because of their responsibility and concern for delivering quality health care. Grounded in the Kaizen continuous improvement model, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to identify and explore effective technological strategies used by four hospital administrators to reduce the incidence of disease misdiagnosis and improve organizational performance. Data were collected from participant interviews and relevant public documents. Thematic analysis included transcription review, data coding, and theme identification. Four themes emerged: (a) prioritizing the acquisition of advanced technology tools, (b) proper fitting of technology …

Seed Dispersal By Martu Peoples Promotes The Distribution Of Native Plants In Arid Australia, Rebecca Bliege Bird, Douglas Bird, Christopher T. Martine, Chloe Mcguire, Leanne Greenwood, Desmond Taylor, Tanisha M. Williams, Peter M. Veth
Faculty Journal Articles
Commensal relationships between wild plants and their dispersers play a key ecological and evolutionary role in community structure and function. While non-human dispersers are often considered critical to plant recruitment, human dispersers have received much less attention, especially when it comes to non-domesticated plants. Australia, as a continent historically characterized by economies reliant on non-domesticated plants, is thus a key system for exploring the ecological role of people as seed dispersers in the absence of agriculture. Here, we utilize a controlled observation research design, employing ecological surveys and ethnographic observations to examine how seed dispersal and landscape burning by Martu …
Use Of Population-Weighted Density Index For Coronavirus Spread In The United States, Huseyin Yuce, Hannah Stauss, Adrienne Persad
Use Of Population-Weighted Density Index For Coronavirus Spread In The United States, Huseyin Yuce, Hannah Stauss, Adrienne Persad
Publications and Research
Background: Understanding how population density affected the transmission of COVID-19 is vitally important, since crowded cities were the epicenters for the disease. Since human contact was the main cause of the spread, population-weighted densities have been shown to be a better measure than conventional densities, since the variation in density across subareas matters more than the density in the total area. Objectives: This study investigates the impact of population-weighted density and other demographics on the rate of COVID-19 spread in the United States. Methods: The study considers population-weighted density and many other demographics. The population-weighted density index is the weighted …
