Exploring The Pdz, Duf, And Lim Domains Of Pdlim5 In Dendrite Branching, Yogesh Srivastava, Maxsam Donta, Lydia L Mireles, Adriana Paulucci-Holthauzen, Leilei Shi, Mark T Bedford, M Neal Waxham, Pierre D Mccrea

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The branched architecture of neuronal dendrites is a key factor in how neurons form ordered networks and discoveries continue to be made identifying proteins and protein-protein interactions that direct or execute the branching and extension of dendrites. Our prior work showed that the molecular scaffold Pdlim5 and delta-catenin, in conjunction, are two proteins that help regulate the branching and elongation of dendrites in cultured hippocampal neurons and do so through a phosphorylation-dependent mechanism triggered by upstream glutamate signaling. In this report we have focused on Pdlim5's multiple scaffolding domains and how each contributes to dendrite branching. The three identified regions …

Interpreting Ppv And Npv Of Diagnostic Tests With Uncertain Prevalence, Yakov Ben-Haim, Clifford C Dacso

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

OBJECTIVE: Medical decision-making is often uncertain. The positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) are conditional probabilities characterizing diagnostic tests and assessing diagnostic interventions in clinical medicine and epidemiology. The PPV is the probability that a patient has a specified disease, given a positive test result for that disease. The NPV is the probability that a patient does not have the disease, given a negative test result for that disease. Both values depend on disease incidence or prevalence, which may be highly uncertain for unfamiliar diseases, epidemics, etc. Probability distributions for this uncertainty are usually unavailable. We develop …

Incomplete Faces Do But Masked Faces Do Not Affect Mind Perception, Farid Pazhoohi, Keina Aoki, Alan Kingstone Jul 2024

Incomplete Faces Do But Masked Faces Do Not Affect Mind Perception, Farid Pazhoohi, Keina Aoki, Alan Kingstone

School of Psychology

The human face plays a critical role in how we perceive the minds of others. The current research across two studies explored whether face masks also impact mind perception, with the expectation that they lead to lower attributions of agency and experience to individuals, making them seem less mentally capable due to their association with reduced facial expression perception and impaired communication. In the first study, participants’ ratings of masked and unmasked faces for agency and experience did not yield significant differences, suggesting that wearing a face mask does not affect the perception of the mind. To explore whether these …

3d Printed Mounts For Liquid Microdroplet Resonators, Parker A. Awerkamp Jul 2024

3d Printed Mounts For Liquid Microdroplet Resonators, Parker A. Awerkamp

Theses and Dissertations

Liquid microdroplet resonators provide an excellent tool for optical studies due to their innate smoothness and high quality factors, but they can be difficult to control. By using 3D printed mounts to support the droplets, we can obtain precise control over the droplet geometries and positions. We here present our work with oil, water, and ice microdroplets, as well as tools required to enable their study. We first present methods for creating 3D printed mounts for oil microdroplet resonators. The mounts enable precise positioning of the droplets relative to a tapered optical fiber. The oil microdroplet resonators exhibited quality factors …

Potential Targeting Mechanisms For Bone-Directed Therapies, Betul Celik, Andrés Leal, Shunji Tomatsu Jul 2024

Potential Targeting Mechanisms For Bone-Directed Therapies, Betul Celik, Andrés Leal, Shunji Tomatsu

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Bone development is characterized by complex regulation mechanisms, including signal transduction and transcription factor-related pathways, glycobiological processes, cellular interactions, transportation mechanisms, and, importantly, chemical formation resulting from hydroxyapatite. Any abnormal regulation in the bone development processes causes skeletal system-related problems. To some extent, the avascularity of cartilage and bone makes drug delivery more challenging than that of soft tissues. Recent studies have implemented many novel bone-targeting approaches to overcome drawbacks. However, none of these strategies fully corrects skeletal dysfunction, particularly in growth plate-related ones. Although direct recombinant enzymes (e.g., Vimizim for Morquio, Cerezyme for Gaucher, Elaprase for Hunter, Mepsevii for …

Exploring The Dutch Bruynzeel Kitchen Through The Negotiations Of Its Two Designers, Limperg And Zwart, Selin Geerinkcx, Els De Vos

Interiority

During the interwar period, numerous endeavours were made to develop a rational kitchen, also called a laboratory kitchen, namely one that prioritised labour-saving efficiency through thoughtful layout and design. Catherine Beecher's work is often credited as its starting point. By synthesising household reformers' experiences and architects’ design expertise, scholars have extensively examined how rational kitchens evolved. This paper discusses the conception of the standardised Dutch Bruynzeel Kitchen (1938) by the collaborative efforts of two designers with distinct yet complementary interior design profiles. Renowned Dutch designer Piet Zwart, widely recognised for his contributions, finalised the technical drawings and promotional materials for …

Impacts Of Managed Honeybee Apiaries On Native Bee Populations, Trapping Efficiencies Of Bee Sampling Methods, And Drone Based Floral Cover Analysis In High Elevation Tall Forb Communities In Central Utah, Nicholas Val Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the impact of honeybee introductions on native bee populations, evaluates the efficiency of traditional bee sampling and monitoring methods, and explores the use of drone technology for assessing floral resources on federal lands in the United States. Federal lands, managed for multiple uses, present a valuable opportunity for the summer pasturing of honeybees. These lands produce vast floral resources and are largely free from pesticides and other pollutants that could weaken honeybee populations. The potential use of this resource is significant given the economic and agricultural concerns presented by declining pollinator trends and Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). …

Heparan sulfate proteoglycan 2 (HSPG2) gene encodes the matrix protein Perlecan, and genetic inactivation of this gene creates mice that are embryonic lethal with severe neural tube defects (NTDs). We discovered rare genetic variants of HSPG2 in 10% cases compared to only 4% in controls among a cohort of 369 NTDs. Endorepellin, a peptide cleaved from the domain V of Perlecan, is known to promote angiogenesis and autophagy in endothelial cells. The roles of enderepellin in neurodevelopment remain unclear so far. Our study revealed that endorepellin can migrate to the neuroepithelial cells and then be recognized and bind with the …

Thermal Oxidative Degradation Of Polystyrene Plastics Used For Food Packaging During Incomplete Waste Incineration, Maycee Hurd

Civil Engineering ETDs

We identified the physical and chemical degradation of polystyrene (PS) plastic used for food packaging after thermal oxidative weathering. Open waste incineration is a widely used waste management practice in isolated and underserved communities. However, the generation of partially incinerated plastics and microplastics (MPs) from this practice is overlooked. Near surface XPS C 1s high resolution analyses show an increase in the intensity of peaks greater than 285 eV corresponding to C/O bonds after burning of PS. Bulk analyses using ATR-FTIR show that thermal oxidation decreased the alkene (3040-3000 cm-1) and alkane (3000-2850 cm-1) C-H stretch signals suggesting PS chain …

Grievability And The Contingency Of Life Value In Twenty-First-Century Science Fiction, Emily A. Reiff

English Language and Literature ETDs

Using Judith Butler’s framework of grievability, this dissertation explores twenty-first-century science fiction by British, Irish, and Caribbean authors whose novels grapple with legacies of colonialism and imperialism that relied on dehumanization and subjugation. Beginning with Sarah Maria Griffin’s Spare and Found Parts (2016), chapter one explores neocolonial rationales—purportedly based on health—which recreate colonial divisions of class and labor and enforce systems of diminishing grievability in a post-apocalyptic Irish context. Chapter two contends that Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun (2021) illustrates the danger inherent to value systems that center “normative” embodiment in worlds that reconfigure hypercapacitated human beings as the …

Computational Drug Repositioning And 3d Skin-Like Tissues Identify Anti-Fibrotic Targets For Systemic Sclerosis (Ssc), Dillon Popovich Jul 2024

Computational Drug Repositioning And 3d Skin-Like Tissues Identify Anti-Fibrotic Targets For Systemic Sclerosis (Ssc), Dillon Popovich

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by dermal and internal organ fibrosis, including heart, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract, and autoantibody formation. Although disease etiology is currently unknown, like other autoimmune diseases, SSc likely develops due to environmental factor exposure in genetically susceptible individuals. Fibrotic diseases are notoriously difficult to treat. Coupled with the autoimmune aspect, SSc is difficult to study scientifically due to the lack of complex disease models that can recapitulate the immune-fibrotic axis of the disease. Due to this, there are only two FDA approved medical treatments for SSc approved for symptomatic treatment of SSc …

Adaptive Fine-Tuning Based Transfer Learning For The Identification Of Mgmt Promoter Methylation Status, Erich Schmitz, Yunhui Guo, Jing Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background. Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is an aggressive form of malignant brain tumor with a generally poor prognosis. O 6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation has been shown to be a predictive bio-marker for resistance to treatment of GBM, but it is invasive and time-consuming to determine methylation status. There has been effort to predict the MGMT methylation status through analyzing MRI scans using machine learning, which only requires pre-operative scans that are already part of standard-of-care for GBM patients. Purpose. To improve the performance of conventional transfer learning in the identification of MGMT promoter methylation status, we developed a 3D SpotTune …
