Assessing Feeling States And Enjoyment Of Various Exercise Activities, Kaitlyn Wusk

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

To maintain physical health, the American College of Sports Medicine (2022) recommends general exercise guidelines for healthy adults. A lack of adherence to these recommendations may be attributable in part to feeling states and enjoyment while exercising. The study utilized surveys to evaluate feeling states and enjoyment of various exercise activities to determine which type of group exercise most successfully induces changes in feeling states and if a positive correlation exists between feeling state changes and enjoyment. Students enrolled in the Fitness for Living course at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) were surveyed before and after eleven distinct …

Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Metabolomics, And Artificial Intelligence To Interrogate The Metabolic Evolution Of Glioblastoma, Kang Lin Hsieh, Qing Chen, Travis C. Salzillo, Jian Zhang, Xiaoqian Jiang, Pratip K. Bhattacharya, Shyan Shams

Faculty Publications

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant Grade VI cancer type with a median survival duration of only 8–16 months. Earlier detection of GBM could enable more effective treatment. Hyperpolarized magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HPMRS) could detect GBM earlier than conventional anatomical MRI in glioblastoma murine models. We further investigated whether artificial intelligence (A.I.) could detect GBM earlier than HPMRS. We developed a deep learning model that combines multiple modalities of cancer data to predict tumor progression, assess treatment effects, and to reconstruct in vivo metabolomic information from ex vivo data. Our model can detect GBM progression two weeks earlier than conventional MRIs …

Exploring The Relationship Of The Noncognitive Variables Of Grit And Mindset In Baccalaureate Nursing Students And Their Impact On Academic Success, Alecia Hollis

Dissertations

The study aimed to evaluate how the noncognitive variables of grit and mindset could impact the academic success of baccalaureate nursing students. With the present and growing shortage of nurses, attrition within nursing programs is cause for concern. Attrition is a multifaceted problem; however, academic failure is one contributing factor. While cognitive factors, such as the standardized aptitude test (SAT), pre-nursing science GPA, pre-nursing GPA, and standardized entrance exams (Al-Alawi et al., 2020; Chisholm-Burns et al., 2021), have traditionally been used for admission criteria, increasing evidence suggests that noncognitive factors, like grit and mindset, play a crucial role in academic …

Improvement Cycles In The Wake Of A Crisis: A School Leadership Team’S Approach To The Unknown, Andrew S. Brandt

All Dissertations

Organizational leaders frequently face challenges when navigating crises or unexpected problems. In such situations, leaders often rely on unbending emergency plans that lack the necessary flexibility, learning opportunities, and effective communication strategies to address the complexities of a crisis. This failure can result in repeated adverse outcomes the next time a crisis surfaces. This qualitative case study examined one high school leadership team’s use of PDSA cycles and the improvement science framework to respond to the COVID-19 crisis and emerging problems. Principles of the improvement science framework and chaos theory were applied to the collection and analysis of data. The …

Elucidating The Roles Of Septin Proteins In Thermotolerance And Cell Wall Integrity In Cryptococcus Neoformans, Stephani S. Martinez Barrera

All Dissertations

Cryptococcus neoformans is a globally distributed fungal pathogen responsible for causing cryptococcal meningitis in immunocompromised individuals. This pathogenic yeast must adapt to changes in temperature upon entering the human host. Septin proteins are conserved filament-forming GTPases that assemble as higher-order complexes at the cell cortex to support cytokinesis and morphogenesis in fungal and animal cells. In C. neoformans, four septin homologs (Cdc3, Cdc10, Cdc11, and Cdc12) assemble at the mother-bud neck, contributing to cytokinesis through poorly understood mechanisms. C. neoformans strains lacking the septins Cdc3 or Cdc12 are viable at 25°C, but fail to proliferate at 37°C, and are …

Antioxidant therapies are of interest in the prevention and management of ocular disorders such as cataracts. Although an active area of interest, topical therapy with antioxidants for the treatment of cataracts is complicated by multiple ocular anatomical barriers, product stability, and solubility. Entrapment and delivery of antioxidants with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles is a possible solution to these challenges, however, little is known regarding their effects in vitro or in vivo. Our first aim was to investigate the impact of blank and lutein loaded PLGA nanoparticles on viability and development of reactive oxygen species in lens epithelial cells in vitro. Photo-oxidative …

Unlocking Icu Barriers: Investigating The Challenges Of Early Progressive Mobility, Leslie S. Bigler Aug 2024

Unlocking Icu Barriers: Investigating The Challenges Of Early Progressive Mobility, Leslie S. Bigler

Doctoral Projects

Approximately 800,000 patients in the United States annually are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to critical illnesses and prolonged immobility contributes to poor patient outcomes. While existing data demonstrates early and progressive mobility helps improve outcomes, adherence remains inconsistent for a variety of reasons such as safety concerns, staffing, and lack of knowledge and confidence of mobilization techniques. This quality improvement project, conducted in a 20-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit, asked staff to identify barriers to adherence to mobility protocols. Nurse managers and clinical educators play a crucial role in addressing these issues using strategies such as …

Thrombocytopenia Following Iron Repletion With Ferrous Gluconate, Muneerah R. Alromaizan, Muath A. Alkhunizan

Saudi Medical Journal

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder marked by low platelet counts that puts patients at risk for spontaneous bleeding. A rare trigger for ITP is iron repletion, which has only been reported in a few cases. In this article, we present a unique case of a 54-year-old male with a history of recurrent ITP who experienced rapid thrombocytopenia following iron repletion with ferrous gluconate. Discontinuation of ferrous medications resulted in platelet counts returning to the normal baseline. Following more than 30 years of the patient’s clinical timeline, this case demonstrates the chronic nature of ITP and the complexity of …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Purpose: Oropharyngeal squamous cell cancers (OPSCCs) are traditionally managed with surgery and, if indicated, adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) with or without chemotherapy. NCCN recommends keeping the time from surgery to the start of RT (TSRT) within 6 weeks to avoid possibly compromising patient outcomes. HPV+ OPSCCs behave more favorably than HPV- OPSCCs. We hypothesized that TSRT beyond 6 weeks may not portend poorer outcomes for the former. Methods: We identified nonmetastatic, high-risk HPV+ OPSCCs treated with multimodal therapy at 2 institutions. Prolonged TSRT was defined as >6 weeks and was evaluated for association with recurrence-free survival (RFS). Radiation treatment time …

A Recreational Therapy-Based Bibliotherapy Program For Perceived Stress And Coping Among Siblings Of Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Lindsey Kirschbaum

All Dissertations

Siblings of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face unique challenges and experiences different from their peers who do not have a sibling with IDD. These challenges can include increased sense of responsibility at home, decreased attention from parents, and feelings of social isolation; all of which can increase stress. While sibling support groups offer opportunities for siblings of individuals with IDD to connect with other siblings, these groups do not formally focus on improving participants’ stress-coping outcomes. Bibliotherapy has been shown to help youth express stress-related feelings and learn stress-coping strategies. However, no known research has assessed the …
