"Zoning" Matters: Rluipa And The New Normal Of Religious Discrimination, Michael Allan Wolf Aug 2024

"Zoning" Matters: Rluipa And The New Normal Of Religious Discrimination, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

The protection of religious freedom under federal law waxes and wanes, depending on two unpredictable factors: judicial activism and congressional action. A review of dozens of cases involving alleged violations of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA), including two recent cases heard by the Supreme Court and the Fourth Circuit, reveals for the first time that many litigants and judges have ignored the congressional injunction to limit the reach of RLUIPA to two (and only two) forms of land-use regulation: zoning and landmarking. Plaintiffs have instead used RLUIPA to challenge water and sewer, septic, fire prevention, building, …

Rejecting Public Utility Data Monopolies, Amy L. Stein Aug 2024

Rejecting Public Utility Data Monopolies, Amy L. Stein

UF Law Faculty Publications

The threat of monopoly power looms large today. Although not the telecommunications and tobacco monopolies of old, the Goliaths of Big Tech have become today’s target for potential antitrust violations. It is not only their control over the social media infrastructure and digital advertising technologies that gives people pause, but their monopolistic collection, use, and sale of customer data. But large technology companies are not the only private companies that have exclusive access to your data; that can crowd out competitors; and that can hold, use, or sell your data with little to no regulation. These other private companies are …

Examining The Theory Of Planned Behavior As An Explanation For Why Some Creatives Learn To Use Generative Ai Tools, Navrose Bajwa Aug 2024

Examining The Theory Of Planned Behavior As An Explanation For Why Some Creatives Learn To Use Generative Ai Tools, Navrose Bajwa

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can create art which earlier was restricted to humans. This involvement of AI in creating art poses risks of automation for the arts and design industry. One way with which artists can respond to this threat is to engage in proactive coping behavior and learn to use generative AI (GAI) for their work. Using an expanded version of Theory of Planned Behavior, this study looked at the predictors of graphic designer’s intentions to learn how to use GAI for art and design work. It was hypothesized that attitudes, social norms, perceived behavioral control and automation awareness would …

Assessing The Invasive Clinging Jellyfish: Where Are All The Polyps?, Angela Chemidlin Aug 2024

Assessing The Invasive Clinging Jellyfish: Where Are All The Polyps?, Angela Chemidlin

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Researching invasive species is vital to the health of ecosystems. Any invasion can place an ecosystem at risk of deterioration through increased competition with native species, food web changes, and community dynamic alterations. Clinging jellyfish (Gonionemus vertens) have recently emerged as a nuisance invader in New Jersey. They pose an additional threat to humans because they possess both paralysis venoms, which cause muscle seizures and intense pain, and neurotoxins that can cause neuropsychiatric symptoms. Jellyfish possess a complex life history involving sexually reproducing medusae and a cryptic asexual polyp stage. Medusae blooms occur during May and June, but locating their …

Everything And Nothing: Exploring The Connection Between Gender Microaggressions In The Family Of Origin And Intimate Adult Relationships, Stephanie Dizenzo-Priestley

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Experiences with gender microaggressions have been shown to negatively impact mental health and self-esteem in women. Cisgender women are faced with pervasive gender microaggressions throughout life, including within their homes and families. This study sought to explore cisgender women’s experiences with gender microaggressions within two critical family systems, the family of origin and intimate adult relationships. Utilizing Postmodern Feminist Theory and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, three overarching themes were identified related to how cisgender women experience and make meaning of gender microaggressions: 1) Rigid Roles and Expectations for Women; 2) Impact of Power Dynamics; and 3) Identifying Pathways to Lasting Change. …

Development Of A Thwarted Belonging Measure In Older Adults: An Application To Neighborhood Context And The Moderating Role Of Neuroticism, Jaclyn Elisa Keenoy

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This research focuses on thwarted belonging (TB), its associations with the neighborhood contextual factors of social cohesion and physical disorder in older adults, and the moderating role of neuroticism. TB is a key component of the Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS) that has serious implications for health and well-being (Van Orden et al., 2012). Despite these implications, TB is less frequently investigated outside of the suicide literature. Thus, the first aim of this research was to create a valid measure of TB in a sample of 5,001 older adults using data from the Health and Retirement Study using a …

Engagement And Retention Of College Students With Anxiety And Depressive Symptoms In A Digital Mental Health Intervention Using A Brief Peer Support Model, Emily A. Kline

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) show promise in improving access to mental health care for college students suffering from depression and anxiety symptoms. Nonetheless, the usefulness of DMHIs is limited by high user attrition. Leveraging peer support among college populations may be a feasible and cost-effective option to improve DMHI engagement and improve mental health outcomes. This open pilot study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a skill-based peer support group in enhancing user engagement in a DMHI for depression and anxiety symptoms. Participants were 20 undergraduate students at a university in New Jersey with elevated depression and …

Exploring The Relationship Between Cognitive Inflexibility And Anxiety In Youth On The Autism Spectrum, Farah Mahmud Aug 2024

Exploring The Relationship Between Cognitive Inflexibility And Anxiety In Youth On The Autism Spectrum, Farah Mahmud

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Anxiety symptoms are prevalent among autistic youth but frequently get overlooked due to issues of diagnostic overlap and atypical presentations of anxiety (Kerns et al., 2014; Wood & Gadow, 2010). Emerging literature suggests that cognitive differences specific to autism, such as cognitive inflexibility, may be associated with vulnerability of developing and maintain anxiety symptoms (Stark et al., 2021). Cognitive flexibility (CF), the ability to shift thinking and attention according to situational demands, is thought to be impaired in many autistic children, given the behavioral rigidity observed in this population (Geurts et al., 2009). However, further work is needed to tease …

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Freshwater Wetlands With A Focus On Ecosystem Functions And Services, Michael Viteritto Aug 2024

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Freshwater Wetlands With A Focus On Ecosystem Functions And Services, Michael Viteritto

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Wetlands are one of the most productive ecosystems on Earth, though they only occupy a very small portion of the planet’s surface. They are highly sensitive ecosystems that have been undergoing an extended period of loss because of anthropogenic stress. Freshwater wetlands number among the most numerous on the planet, and in the United States they make up the overwhelming majority of wetland area. Geographically isolated wetlands (GIWs) are not directly connected to other surface water in a watershed. Freshwater wetlands provide a number of beneficial ecosystem services including climate control, erosion protection, nutrient removal and storage, flood control, food …

The Effects Of The Living Compass Group On Lpc Associates' Wellness And Self-Care, Jennifer Yarbrough Aug 2024

The Effects Of The Living Compass Group On Lpc Associates' Wellness And Self-Care, Jennifer Yarbrough

Dissertations

Counselors can only be effective if they engage in a healthy level of self-care. Counselors recognize the importance of self-care, but they often ignore the early warning signs when it is lacking (e.g., emotional shifts, changes in well-being, or altered behaviors). Self-care has been studied for many years and is emphasized in the ACA Code of Ethics 2014. However, counselors still need to work on establishing a self-care practice, especially considering that 50% of licensed professional counselor associates (LPC associates) do not make it through the licensure process. Researchers found that novice counselors experience a higher level of burnout. In …

A Laboratory-Based Experimental Evaluation Of The Effects Of Values Clarification And Valued Contingencies On Problematic Smartphone Use Behavior, Max Roberts Aug 2024

A Laboratory-Based Experimental Evaluation Of The Effects Of Values Clarification And Valued Contingencies On Problematic Smartphone Use Behavior, Max Roberts

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is a growing problem in need of effective interventions. The psychological inflexibility (PI) model of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) provides a transdiagnostic framework through which PSU can be conceptualized and intervention processes identified. One sub-process of the PI model – values clarity – is theoretically important in maintaining and ameliorating addictive behaviors like PSU. The present study tested the acute impact of values clarification on PSU behavior. Undergraduates (N = 130; 50% female) who self-identified as having problems with their smartphone use and valued helping children in need were randomized into one of three conditions …

Association Of Illness Perceptions, Illness Perception Incongruence, And Psychological Distress Among Caregivers In The Context Of Chronic Multi-Symptom Illness, Darren Winograd Aug 2024

Association Of Illness Perceptions, Illness Perception Incongruence, And Psychological Distress Among Caregivers In The Context Of Chronic Multi-Symptom Illness, Darren Winograd

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Following the common sense model of self regulation (CSM), how individuals think about an illness (i.e., illness perceptions) influences one’s level of psychological distress (e.g., burden, depression). This is thought to be especially true for illnesses which lack any clear medical etiology, termed chronic multi-symptom illness (CMI). While the impact of illness perceptions are well established predictors of distress among those diagnosed CMI, no known study has considered if illness perceptions similarly impact informal caregivers caring for individuals with CMI. This study therefore sought to examine if illness perceptions held by caregivers caring for individuals with CMI predicted caregiver psychological …

Autism Stigma And Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression: An Exploration Of Rumination And Camouflaging As Mediating Factors, Emma Wilkinson Aug 2024

Autism Stigma And Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression: An Exploration Of Rumination And Camouflaging As Mediating Factors, Emma Wilkinson

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A small body of evidence indicates autistic people experience stigma related to autism that predicts mental health outcomes. Among other stigmatized populations, use of emotion regulation process and strategies are mechanisms by which stigma leads to negative outcomes. However, these mechanisms have not yet been explored in relation to autism stigma. In a sample of autistic adults, the present study sought to evaluate whether rumination and camouflaging mediated the relationship between autism stigma and internalizing symptoms utilizing a brief longitudinal design. Participants completed measures of stigma, rumination, camouflaging, and internalizing symptoms at baseline, one month, and two month timepoints. Results …

Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research

PURPOSE: Malalignment of distal tibia fractures can lead to malunion/nonunion or alter the limb mechanical axis which may cause arthritis. Proposed methods to decrease malalignment include fibular fixation or multiplanar interlocking screws, however these remain controversial. This study aimed to identify factors associated with malalignment in distal tibial fractures with associated fibular shaft fractures.

METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of distal tibia fractures with associated fibular shaft fractures treated with intramedullary nailing at two level one trauma centers between 2015 and 2019. Cases involving malalignment (> 5° of deviation from anatomic axis on either coronal/sagittal axis) on final follow-up …

Farmers in developing countries show low adoption rates of sustainable agricultural practices. Therefore, this review examines influential factors contributing to sustainable agricultural practices adoption among rural farmers in developing countries in Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Africa, thereby highlighting challenges and constraints. The research indicated that behavioural factors influence the participation in and adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. Farmers are often unaware of environmental issues such as climate change and need support through knowledge, technology, and training. The behavioural insights of farmers need to be incorporated for better policymaking. Therefore, urgent attention is needed to address the social, agronomic, structural, …

Drink…Then Drive Away: The Effects Of Lowering The Blood Alcohol Concentration In Utah, Javier E. Portillo, Wisnu Sugiarto, Kevin Willardsen

Economics Faculty Publications

In March of 2017 Utah announced its intent to lower the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) for driving from 0.08 to 0.05 g/dL. However, this change did not take effect until 2019. We employ a difference‐in‐ differences strategy on Utah counties using neighboring states as controls to test whether this policy change significantly affected the number of traffic accidents or the severity of those accidents. Results show the policy appears to temporarily decrease the total number of accidents, limited primarily to property damage‐ only accidents. We believe these results may be partially explained by drivers who, after the policy is …
