Anderson Localization For The Unitary Almost Mathieu Operator, Fan Yang Aug 2024

Anderson Localization For The Unitary Almost Mathieu Operator, Fan Yang

Faculty Publications

We prove Anderson localization for all Diophantine frequencies and all non-resonant phases for a model that arises from a 2D quantum walk model subject to an external magnetic field, also known as the unitary almost Mathieu operator. Our work provides the first localization results for all Diophantine frequencies in quasi-periodic quantum walk and CMV matrix setting. We also obtain sharp asymptotics of the localized eigenfunctions.

Social difficulties and mental health are primary behavioral health concerns in autistic young adults, perhaps especially during key life transitions such as entering college. This study evaluated how dissatisfaction with social connectedness may predict and/or maintain depression and anxiety symptoms in neurodiverse, first-semester, undergraduate students (N = 263; n = 105 with diagnosed or suspected autism). Participation included a baseline survey battery, a brief survey completed twice per week across 12 weeks, and an endpoint survey battery. Social dissatisfaction at baseline was prospectively associated with biweekly ratings of depression symptoms, when controlling for baseline depressive symptoms. Social dissatisfaction was synchronously …

The Impact Of Teaching Residency Programs On Burnout In Urban Schools, Jessica Ghazi

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This doctoral research investigates burnout of urban educators in a large southeastern district for a mixed methods study. Research questions one and two investigate demographic and organizational variables to determine if they are predictors of burnout or any of the three subcomponents, respectively. In research question three, teaching residencies were explored to determine if they provide appropriate preparation for teaching in urban schools which can limit burnout of educators. Variable data was collected through surveys and analyzed quantitatively of a sample of 69 urban teachers across 12 schools. For research question four, a subsample of teachers participated in focus groups …

Analyzing Anuran Diversity In Urban And Rural Wetlands Using Frog Call Citizen Science Data, Jeremiah Rhodes

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Amphibians are currently experiencing a crisis of high extinction rates because of habitat destruction, and climate change. Citizen science, the incorporation of citizens in data collection or management of scientific research, has become necessary to monitor populations widely. The Tennessee Amphibian Monitoring Program is a citizen science program, at the state-level that conducts manual calling surveys in Tennessee. The TAMP dataset was analyzed to see if there was a difference in diversity and abundance of anurans in urban wetlands compared to rural wetlands in the Ridge and Valley ecoregion. A Hutchenson’s t-test and a Mann-Whitney U test found that the …

Alcohol And Cognition: Ego Threat As A Moderator, Erin Prince Aug 2024

Alcohol And Cognition: Ego Threat As A Moderator, Erin Prince

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined how ego threat (negative feedback) interacts with alcohol consumption to influence cognitive performance. We hypothesized ego threat would moderate the effects of alcohol on impulse control and attention in 30 college students (21-49 years). A 2×2 factorial design assessed performance on the Visual Search Task (attention) and Go/No-Go Task (impulse control) under laboratory and naturalistic settings, while sober or intoxicated. Alcohol consumption impaired performance, as evidenced by slower reaction times during visual search. An interaction effect emerged, with the combination of alcohol and ego threat further compromising reaction times. Interestingly, higher baseline impulsivity correlated with faster reaction …

Exploring Healthcare Chatbot Information Presentation: Applying Hierarchical Bayesian Regression And Inductive Thematic Analysis In A Mixed Methods Study, Samuel Nelson Koscelny

All Theses

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, significantly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States. While contributing to over 691,000 deaths in 2021 alone in the United States (U.S.), it also imposes immense economic burden on the healthcare system, costing approximately $131 billion annually. One way to address this issue is for increased self-care behaviors and medication adherence, both of which require sufficient health literacy. Despite the importance of health literacy, 90% of U.S. adults struggle with health-related subjects. Overcoming the issues associated with health literacy requires addressing the …

A Benchtop Analysis Of Pressure Offloading Associated With Custom Socket Inlays In Transtibial Prostheses, Sarah G. Hill Aug 2024

A Benchtop Analysis Of Pressure Offloading Associated With Custom Socket Inlays In Transtibial Prostheses, Sarah G. Hill

All Theses

Approximately 78% of people with lower limb amputations are dissatisfied with the comfort of their prostheses (Quintero-Quiroz & Perez 2019). In the case of lower limb amputations, the residual limb tissue bears far more weight than it was before the amputation. The pressure put on the soft tissue of the residual limb causes discomfort (Brown et al. 2021). In previous work, custom inlays were created, which fit inside the prosthesis and offload pressure, with the goal of helping to increase the comfort and satisfaction of the prosthesis user (Brown et al. 2021). In this project, a benchtop prosthetic socket loading …

Federal Reserve Speeches And Sovereign Credit Risk, Abhinav Anand, Hitesh Doshi, Ankit Kumar, Jalaj Pathak Aug 2024

Federal Reserve Speeches And Sovereign Credit Risk, Abhinav Anand, Hitesh Doshi, Ankit Kumar, Jalaj Pathak

Working Papers

We examine the spillover effect of speeches delivered by the Federal Reserve Board of Governors on sovereign credit risk and findthat the tone of speeches especially those that are forward looking negatively impacts sovereign credit spreads. Cross-sectionally, theimpact is stronger for countries with high external debt and thosewith high exchange rate stability. The negative relationship betweenFed speech tone and sovereign spreads is exacerbated in the presenceof monetary policy shocks, economic policy uncertainty, and a loosemonetary policy stance, and is likely channeled via the macroeconomiccontent embedded in speeches. We also show that Fed speeches delivered 1–4 weeks prior to FOMC meetings …

Background: Repair of posterior medial meniscus root (PMMR) tears has demonstrated favorable outcomes and may prevent rapid progression of knee osteoarthritis; however, there is a paucity of data regarding prognostic factors affecting postoperative outcomes.

Purpose/hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to identify factors on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that predict postoperative outcomes after PMMR repair. It was hypothesized that patients with increasing levels of degenerative changes as evaluated through semiquantitative preoperative MRI scans would have worse postoperative patient-reported outcome (PRO) scores.

Study design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.

Methods: Patients who underwent PMMR repair between 2012 and …

The Curious Case Of The James Brown Estate, Lee-Ford Tritt Aug 2024

The Curious Case Of The James Brown Estate, Lee-Ford Tritt

UF Law Faculty Publications

Great musicians are larger than life, and the most iconic of them become members of an elite musical monarchy: Michael Jackson was the King of Pop, Aretha Franklin was the Queen of Soul, and Prince Rogers Nelson was Prince. Similarly, James Brown, the inventor of funk music, landed a seat at this table of legendary musicians. Although lacking a royal honorific, James Brown was "the Godfather of Soul." The Godfather of Soul, though, shared more than musical prowess with these other iconic musicians. The estates of James Brown, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Prince all continue to face legal obstacles—years …

Is The Lightbulb Still-Still On?: Social Representations Among Undergraduates, A Replication And Extension, Nahdira Rollins Aug 2024

Is The Lightbulb Still-Still On?: Social Representations Among Undergraduates, A Replication And Extension, Nahdira Rollins

Creative Studies Graduate Student Master's Theses

Research has illuminated the differences between implicit and explicit theories of creativity—though scientific theories have been tested and can be theoretically sound, implicit beliefs among the general population can run contrary to academic theory. As important as it is for researchers to know and understand creativity from an empirically founded perspective, it is equally as important for them to understand creativity theories that come from the general understanding and perspectives of those who aren’t associated with academic research. By replicating Glăveanu’s 2011 study Is the lightbulb still on?: Social Representations of creativity in a western context, the current study examines …

A Thematic Analysis: A Lived Experience Raising A Child Diagnosed With A Neurodevelopmental Disability In A Rural Community, Matthew Kettelhake

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, about 17% of children between the age of 3 and 18 are diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disability (Zablowsky et al; 2019). About 14% of the population lives in a rural community (USDA, 2020). Being part of a rural community has additional challenges urban areas may not face (Sharpley et al., 1997; Hasting &Taunt, 2002; Gerstein et al.,2009; Dabrokska & Pisula, 2010). Parents of children diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disability also face additional challenges than raising a neurotypical child. This study explored the themes and commonalities that arise from raising a child diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disability …
